Groot Ceramic Mug: I Am Drink!

It may still be a while before we see an adult Groot on screen again, but you can commemorate the life of Guardians of the Galaxy’s savior every time you take a sip of coffee with this excellent Groot ceramic mug.

Ceramic artist Cerapost crafts these intricately detailed and textured mugs which look like our favorite talking tree. Every detail is there, from his spiky wooden hairdo to his beady little black eyes.

Each mug holds 500ml (about 16.9 oz) of your favorite beverage, and the artist says its both microwave and dishwasher safe. Though I’d have a hard time putting a handmade $100 mug in either of those places for fear of something bad happening like what happened to the actual Groot. Better to handwash, if you ask me, because I’m pretty sure if you crack this thing, it’s not coming back to life as a Baby Groot mug.

Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2S is a more powerful take on an already beautiful phone

By now, you probably know exactly what to expect from a smartphone sequel with an S in its name: it'll be faster than its predecessor but its design won't change very much. That's not necessarily a bad thing for Xiaomi's newly announced Mi Mix 2S, th...

A roof for you, a home for your furry friends

birdhouse_tile_1

If you’ve ever wanted to wake up to the chirping of birds, the Birdhouse Tiles are the best way to go about it. Not just a roof above your head, these tiles provide roofs above the heads of birds too. Integrating a birdhouse into the ceramic tile, the Birdhouse tiles can be used alongside regular ones, letting you put as many birdhouses you want on your roof.

Designed in consultation with Vogelbescherming Nederland (a Dutch organization that is concerned with protecting avian life), the Birdhouse helps support and house local birds, letting them flourish instead of dying out or migrating. Inside the Birdhouse, underneath the roof tile, a carefully designed nesting basket made of wood and bird screen is attached. This nesting basket ensures good ventilation, prevents the birds from moving to other empty spots underneath your roof and makes it really easy to clean the nest after a breeding period.

By installing one or more of these Birdhouse roof tiles, you give birds a safe haven to nest and raise their chicks. Instead of crawling under the roof tiles to build a nest and becoming pests rather than pets, the birds can now linger in their own cozy terracotta row houses!

Drink the tea… not the tea-bag!

tea_bag_mug_1

The advantage of the tea-bag is its disposable-bag nature… The bad thing about tea-bags is also its disposable-bag nature. Let me explain what I mean. You use tea bags in places where traditional brewing isn’t possible. At a kiosk, at your work-desk, at the dining table of a restaurant or your home. However, there are two processes to tea-bag prepared tea. One, the brewing, and two, the disposing of the tea-bag. Unlike coffee that dissolves in water/milk, tea leaves don’t, and having to haplessly hold your cup in one hand and a soggy tea-bag in the other while you look for a waste bin is far from ideal.

So the Creative Ceramic Tea Mug takes care of that problem for you. Its innovative handle comes with a small space for the tea-bag to retract into. Not just that, it even squeezes the bag (something I shamelessly do, because I hate the idea of wasting tea), allowing every bit of flavor out of the leaves, and leaving you with a brew that’s ready to drink, while the tea-bag patiently hides in its corner, waiting to be disposed AFTER you’ve enjoyed your beverage. Drinking tea shouldn’t be so complicated, after all!

Super Mario Bros. Turtle and Boo Mugs: 1up with Caffeine

Coffee and video games don’t generally mix. After all, reaching down from your controller in the middle of a game to grab a sip usually results in a nasty mouth burn or hot coffee spilled all over the place. Best to stick with something cold and in a can while playing. But in between gaming sessions, a cup of joe is a nice way to recaffeinate before the next round. These Super Mario Bros. themed mugs are a great way to enjoy your coffee break.

Choose from either a Koopa Troopa shell or a Boo vampire ghost ceramic mug, each of which holds an ample 22 oz. of your favorite hot beverage. Both mugs are officially licensed by Nintendo, and are officially awesome gifts for Super Mario fans.

So put on your overalls and warp pipe your way over to ThinkGeek now to grab these mugs before they’re gone. They’re just $14.99 each.

This Ceramic Death Star Lamp Is the Ultimate Accent Light in the Universe

The original Death Star may have had a fatal flaw, but it was still one of the most important and iconic symbols of the Star Wars universe. If you prefer to remember the Death Star as it was before it was blown to smithereens by Luke Skywalker, then check out this cool lighting fixture.

This sweet ceramic lamp comes from Budapest, Hungary ceramic artist Light Gallery Réka, and it looks fantastic. When illuminated, the Death Star casts cool splashes of light and dark across your walls, much like the Light and Dark sides of The Force battle it out on a daily basis. When turned off, it’s an equally cool art object, waiting to be activated and ready to blow up Alderaan.

The lamp measures about 7″ across, and is made completely from white clay, though they can also tint one into a dark grey if you prefer a more accurate representation of the Ultimate Weapon in the Universe. If you’d like one for your room, head over to Light Gallery Réka’s Etsy shop, where you can order one for about $136.

Star Trek TOS Geeki Tikis: Beam Me Up a Drink, Scotty!

If you’re like me, and love both Star Trek and tiki drinks, today is your lucky day. That’s because we can now buy this awesome set of Geeki Tiki tumblers inspired by The Original Series.

The set of six officially-licensed 14oz. ceramic tikis features likenesses of Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy, a Gorn, a Klingon, Mr. Spock, and a Mugato. I like to imagine that the crew just beamed down to a planet where the locals sit on the beach and sip Mai Tais and Daiquiris all day. While Spock might refuse their hospitality, Kirk would get so drunk. I know it.

You can grab the complete set on Amazon for $119.99, but you can also pick them up individually if you want to pick and choose.

Hypersonic aircraft are more realistic thanks to a ceramic coating

There are a few reasons why you aren't flying across the country in hypersonic aircraft, but the simplest of them is heat: when you travel at speeds over Mach 5, the ultra-high temperatures (around 3,600F to 5,400F) strip layers from metal. How do y...
