Coffee Talk

fdnstudiolab_theconversation00

The Conversation is a collection of 8 mugs that aims to inspire just that! The series explores and encourages a dialectic in regards to design. Each has is printed with a thought-provoking statement that will get your wheels turning in the morning. While you ponder the statement, its “missing” handle will also get you thinking about our preconceptions as to what design is and should be!

Eco-Friendly Coffee Cups Can Be Planted After Use

coffee-cup-with-seeds

We’re pretty efficient at destroying the planet, so it’s nice to see an ever growing consortium of people doing their damnedest to slow the pace at which we bury ourselves in our own filth. The latest effort we’ve come across involves coffee cups, which Americans throw out at the rate of 146 million a year (and that number seems low, to be honest). The “Reduce. Reuse. Grow.” cups are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper and have had tree seeds embedded in them. This means after you’re done drinking your cup of Joe, you can soak them in water for 5 minutes, and then just plant them; the type of tree that grows out is printed on the front. And even if you don’t go through the effort of planting them, the will biodegrade after just 180 days so your conscience can be just a little clearer.

Granted, their effectiveness will be determined by their adoption rate at coffee shops nationwide, but you can help by donating to the project. Although you won’t get any cups until you donate $500 or more (and then you just get a “framed and singed 1st edition cup), you can jump in with as little as $1.

Alien Pint Glasses Look Like Old School Collectables

I can remember growing up when The Empire Strikes Back hit theaters; Burger King had this promotion where you could get awesome collectible glasses for fans of the flick. I hated the food, but I wanted all those tumblers about as much as juvenile me ever wanted anything. Naturally, I broke them all in short order, but they were cool while they lasted.

These Alien Pint glasses come in a set of four and they have the same sort of artwork that I remember from those collectable glasses in the ’70s and ’80s. On the back of the glasses are details about the alien life cycle, and apparently the box has egg shaped cutouts. Each cup holds 16 ounces and are 5.75″ tall. The four designs include The Space Jockey, the Alien, Kane’s Chestburster, Ripley & the Airlock.

You don’t have to go eat terrible hamburgers to get these either; all you need to do is plunk down your $29.99 and get all four at ThinkGeek.

Smart Lids Change Color When Contents Are Too Hot

Lid-and-Magazine2f

Taking a tiny sip of a piping hot drink is the usual way to figure out its temperature. That, or feeling the cup with your hands, but that can be hard with some materials. The Smart Lid hopes to give you a visual cue, informing you of the drink’s temperature before you use your own body as a thermometer. It turns red when the contents are at 120°F (48°C) or above, which seems like an appropriate middle ground. The lids come in packs of 1,000 of either the lid alone, or the lid with a 8oz or 12oz cup, with prices starting as low as $62. Clearly restaurants will have more use for this, but there is a 40 lid/cup pack for $30 that you may be tempted to use at home.

Pokémon Poké Ball Cup: When You Gotta Catch a Drink

I’m sorry to disappoint athletic Pokémon fans out there. This is not a jockstrap, it’s a drinking cup shaped like the monster catching Poké Ball. I’m not sure if it’s licensed, but I’m pretty sure Nintendo would rather license this and release all of its games on iOS than approve a Pokémon Ball Cup.

It holds 20 oz. of liquid. Er, drinks. Dammit you and your dirty minds! You can order one from PartyBell for $3 (USD), although as of this writing they’re on sale for $2.

Did your office vote you “most likely to knock over their coffee cup”? You need the Mighty Mug Mug for Klutzes: Mighty Mug Wobbles but it Wont Fall Down, the mug for klutzes. The Mighty Mug has a Smartgrip bottom that grips flat surfaces so it won’t tip over if you knock into it. No more hot drink spills on important things like keyboards, paperwork, and testicles. Dishwasher and microwave safe, it holds 16 ounces in it’s insulated BPA-free lidded cup. Unfortunately it won’t work on car dashboards as they are usually not smooth enough.
