AT-AT Horse Cosplay: The Empire Bucks Back

We’ve seen all kinds of cosplay around here. we’ve also seen our share of AT-ATs, but we’ve never seen a horse cosplaying an Imperial walker. But when Imperials hit hard times, you gotta do what you gotta do. Sometimes that means outfitting a Clydesdale in AT-AT armor rather than building a trillion dollar walking weapon.

Mike’s Tiny Shop is responsible for this amazing cosplay horseplay. So now we have seen it all. A Star Wars AT-AT costume on a 2,000 pound horse. I hope they take it out trick or treating this Halloween. Maybe instead of candy people can just give this horse a feedbag and send it on its way.

I like to picture Grand Moff Tarkin riding this beast majestically into battle. Sadly it doesn’t fire lasers or crush humans with its feet. Also, a snowspeeder would take this AT-AT down in a second, so Tarkin wouldn’t last long on the battlefield, but it would make for a great painting. I’d also like to see AT-AT races with horses wearing this armor and jockeys wearing AT-AT driver uniforms. That’s what I want to see at a Disney Star Wars theme park.

This might be the most bad-ass horse armor ever.

Texas Cowboy Moves to New Jersey and Builds an Electric Horse

Few things are less appealing to a cowboy from the rural wilds of Texas that is a real rodeo cowboy than moving to New Jersey. This is exactly what happened to Steve Bacque when he met a woman from Jersey and got married. The couple moved back to her home state, and that meant Steve had to look at life without his horse.

His answer wasn’t a new wife, a rural New Jersey home, or a new horse. He decided to build himself an awesome electric horse he named “Charger.” The horse is powered by an electric golf cart motor and is controlled using a pair of reins. This is the only horse I know with more than one horsepower.

Charger can go up to 40 mph at full gallop, which is too fast for an old cowboy, so Steve limited its speed to 15 mph. It even has a wheelie bar out back because being thrown from an electric horse just won’t do. As an added bonus, this thing won’t poop everywhere.

LEGO Mindstorms TrotBot Walks Like an 8-Legged Horse

This TrotBot was created by Ben Vagle. It is an 8-legged robot built out of LEGO Mindstorms and despite its looks, it uses a walking mechanism inspired by the gait of a galloping horse.

You can see it in action in the videos below. It is fun to watch and it really gets around on a variety of surfaces, uphill, downhill and over obstacles. Even though it has eight legs you can clearly see the equine inspiration in its walk.

It even makes a horse-like clip-clop sound in this clip (clop):

Given its all-terrain agility, I think we can expect to see more robots using this unusual walking gait. Ben goes into more detail about the build process on his website and over at Make.

ICYMI: Robot running buddy, mechanical sea life and more

Today on In Case You Missed It: A horse-sized, standing CT scanner has been invented to keep your equine pals from being tranquilized before images are taken; a sea urchin mouth was used as inspiration for a robot that could be sent to Mars to coll...

Equine CT scanner can peek inside standing, conscious horses

Horses are majestic creatures, but one thing they are not is tiny. Well, not for long, anyway. That creates a problem for equine medicine. When an animal weighs just under an imperial ton and is six-foot tall at the shoulders, there's only so much a...

Colin Furze’s MotorHorse: Merry-Go-Vroom

A horse with no horsepower? Colin Furze wouldn’t stand for that. So when he got his hands on a miniature fiberglass horse, he took it apart and then crammed a pit bike inside. And then he rode it in a knight’s tournament.

motorhorse_by_colin_furze_1zoom in

Colin used a 2015 PBS 110 pit bike to power his MotorHorse. The end result is functional, but since Colin set the front fork to a nearly 90º angle to align the front wheel with the horse’s neck, it probably won’t fare well on bumpy roads.

Here’s Colin and his MotorHorse going up against a knight in a boring real horse. Skip to 0:40 if you watched the video above.

Colin Furze is magic. Be sure to check out his website and YouTube channel for more of his crazy creations.

Guy Builds Gas-powered Horse, Rides It

Su Daocheng is a farmer in a China who is also a self-taught mechanical genius. He built this gas engine-powered horse not just to ride around on being cool, but to help him plow his fields. It’s not the fastest horse in the world, but you will get there eventually. He’s like the one horseman of the crappy apocalypse.

It must take a long time to plow his fields is all I’m saying. It is pretty awesome that he built this himself, but it is pretty funny to see in action. The part where it starts up like a lawnmower is particularly amusing:

Some of his crazy kinetic sculptures can be seen near the end of the video. We need more guys like this in the world. He hasn’t lost that child-like sense of wonder and drive to create.

Mechanical My Little Pony Ride: Insert Coin for Friendship

Need more My Little Pony excitement? Sure you do. This is Iron Hoof, a mechanical pony ride. He can withstand up to 286 pounds. So even the largest brony can get on and experience a variable 3-speed ride. It’s a neat store front ride for anyone willing to pony up the change.

Hey, MLP fans need to be able to ride ponies, just like Star Wars fans want to ride in an X-Wing. This machine plays music and is built over a welded steel frame with a real saddle on top. It has two coin slots, just like a regular storefront horsey ride.

It was built by DeviantART members Markus K., Saer Fallensun, Snow Chetah, and irgendeinwolf for GalaCon 2014, a brony convention in Ludwigsburg, Germany. It’s for sale if you want to ride off into the sunset on it.
