This versatile lounge chair opens up every room with its foldable build and Scandinavian design

Living in small spaces calls for either multifunctional or foldable furniture. When you have the choice to fold up and stow away a lounge chair or use hidden compartments in a bed frame for storage, the space in your bedroom or living area completely opens up. Following the debut of their modular FK Bookcase System, furniture maker Carl Hansen & Søn introduces the Plico Chair, a handcrafted wooden lounge chair that folds into itself for easy storage.

The Plico Chair got its name from the Latin translation, “To fold.” Built using Scandinavian design flairs and minimal ornamentation, the Plico Chair’s frame is crafted from solid oak wood for a natural look and sturdy base. The rear legs of the Plico Chair fall back, allowing a natural recline for the cushion to rest. Upholstered in linen canvas, the cushion also evokes a subtle comfort with organic tones and lasting protection from inevitable wear and tear. A natural leather hide strap extends from the rear legs to the front of a chair to create an armrest propped up with a center wooden peg. Designed to be disassembled for easy storage, the Plico Chair features exposed brass fitting and visible joints, enhancing its already elemental aesthetic.

With such an elegant look and versatile design, Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn describes the chair’s appeal, “The Plico Chair is an extremely versatile piece of furniture – not only in its function of being a foldable lounge chair, but also in its appearance, and it fits elegantly into the living room, the cottage, and the hotel room and lobby. It is a comfortable and cozy chair to sit in with a good book and a cup of coffee.”

Iconic Eames Lounge Chair gets a timely upgrade by automotive designer Ian Callum

Legendary Furniture Design meets cutting edge Automotive CMF.

2021 marks 65 years since the Eames Lounge Chair was first debuted by prolific design duo, Ray and Charles Eames. The chair and ottoman, with their bent plywood paneling and plush leather cushioning, look futuristic even by today’s standards and are every bit a design hallmark… however it hasn’t stopped British automotive designer Ian Callum from propelling it further into the future. The Callum Lounge Chair builds on the template of the Eames Lounge Chair, albeit with fresh, automotive-inspired design sensibilities and a carbon-fiber construction!

The chair comes from the studio Callum Designs, which was founded in 2019 after Ian Callum retired from his position as the Director of Design for Jaguar Land Rover. Callum’s 4-decade career also includes work for Ford, TWR, and Aston Martin. Embarking on a new creative journey with his own studio, the iconic British Designer debuted the Callum Lounge Chair – a piece of furniture that has a distinct automotive touch. Callum’s reinterpretation of the timeless mid-century design classic showcases sportscar contouring along with automotive-inspired electric blue cushions. The cushions sit against a wood and carbon fiber frame, giving the car its slick, sporty appeal. The vibrant Pantone palette was a conscious design choice too, straying from the Eames Lounge Chair’s black and brown aesthetic. The chairs are finished by hand in Callum Design’s in-house trim shop in their Warwickshire HQ.

Furniture is an exciting new domain for Ian, who’s spent over 40 years in the automotive world. In an interview with Wallpaper, Callum addressed how his previous experiences with chairs has always come with strings attached, given most of them fit inside cars. He mentions that with the Callum Lounge Chair, “[it] doesn’t have to pass any kind of crash test, which is refreshing”. The Callum Lounge Chair will remain a one-off prototype for now, unless it drums up enough customer interest… although one can expect them to cost a fortune!

Inspired by the iconic Eames Lounge chair, this cantilevered chair was built to lift you up!

Innovative chair designs might feel hard to come by, but when one does come along, it’s not so much a thought, but a feeling that there’s something special about it. Whether it’s in the design, construction, or marketing processes, chairs can tell a story and inform us of a designer’s willingness to revolutionize preexisting modes of design, like Marcel Breuer’s Wassily Chair, break the mold during periods of construction, as is the case with the Panton chair, or publicly broadcast a design’s potential for overnight success, like Charles and Ray Eames’ Eames Lounge Chair. Pulling inspiration from the last design mentioned above, Danny Cheung brought to life his own vision of the elusive ‘great chair design’ with the Clipspringer Lounge Chair.

Similar to the Eames Office Chair, Clipspringer is constructed using spring steel, which, much like great chair designs, is a durable, long-lasting building material all thanks to its molding process. Spring steel is the product of a low alloy, medium carbon steel that is heat-tempered to bend and harden the steel into the designer’s desired figure. By partly using spring steel to create the structure of Clipspringer, the chair’s overall elastic modulus is benefitted to maintain an object’s stress on the chair’s cushion and backrest without it concaving inwards – this is what allows Danny Cheung to stand on the edge of his cantilevered chair frame without the chair losing grip on the floor beneath it. A metal frame sits just above the bent spring steel and absorbs much of the tensile stress applied to the Clipspringer chair so that you can comfortably position yourself and lean all the way back without fear that the chair’s cantilevered structure will collapse under compression.

Aesthetically speaking, Clipspringer is certainly reminiscent of great, influential chair designs of yesterday like Wassily’s iconic black cushion and sterling steel combination or Eames Lounge Chair’s reclined backrest and accompanying footrest. However, the cantilevered chair design’s experimental and methodical design process is akin to that of the Panton Chair. The Panton Chair found its audience and overnight success in Basle, Switzerland thanks to Verner Panton’s steadfast commitment to designing and molding a chair out of material that still belongs distinctly to the 60s: plastic. Through consistent experimentation and efficient changes during construction, Verner Panton created an unprecedented lounge chair that still turns heads several years later. Danny Cheung took to planning his own interpretation of the designer’s ever-changing vision for the ideal lounge chair and certainly rose to the occasion.

Lounge in Art

bence_1

The Lane lounge chair find perfectly harmony between form and function by first exploring human anthropometry and ergonomics. Its dimensions, incline angle, and form-fitting shape place the user in the ideal lounging position in what almost feels like pure weightlessness. Inspired by rotational molding technology, which is significantly more economical than other types of molds, the design applies polyethylene’s flexible character to achieve a monocoque form while maintaining a rocking feature. Before the production a thin parts of mould made from aluminium with CNC machine. In the beginning the polyethylene’s consistence is powder. When the powder is loaded into the mould it is closed, locked, and loaded into an oven. Inside the oven the mould is bi-axially rotated slowly as the polymer melts and coats the inside of the mould. After the melting, when the time is right, the mould is removed from the oven and cooled. Cooling allows the polymer to solidify to the desired shape and shrink slightly so that it can be handled and removed from the mould. Although a practical, functional piece, when not in use, the chair doubles as an exciting three dimensional art work.

From Log To Chaise Lounge!

The Long 8 stems from the multi-disciplinary Swiss artist Natanel Gluska’s log creation. He saws off a huge chunk of log and transforms it into a beautifully refined lounge in a very short timeframe. This current iteration is in fiberglass and can be crafted in many colors. Have a look at the awesome video to see the sawing in action. Totally awesome!

Antisocial Chair!

The Booth lounge chair was designed for those times when all you need is a little darn privacy! A soft hood surrounds the seated individual to muffle sounds and keep them partially out of sight. The removable hood can also be detached for a more casual and approachable look.
