3D Printed Pip-Boy 3000 Keeps Man Literally and Figuratively Cool

We’ve seen a few faithful Pip-Boy 3000 replicas. This one made by Thingiverse member kosh23 leans towards the functional end but still looks badass. Because his left hand and forearm was placed in a cast, he made the Pip-Boy 3000 replica to cradle his iPhone and to keep the cast cool.

Kosh23′s iPhone 4S is held right where the Pip-Boy 3000′s monitor should be. A 60mm fan draws out the air from inside to keep his cast cool. The cast also has an LED flashlight up front. Kosh23 printed the replica using ABS, painted it with black Krylon primer and then coated it with brass Krylon. The replica has two main halves held together by a hinge on one side and magnets on the other side for easy removal.

LEGO Pip-Boy 3000: Bricked Computer

We’ve seen a couple of DIY Pip-Boy 3000s that used the case of the Pip-Boy clock collectible to make a faithful replica. But Flickr user Simon Liu aka Si-MOCs chose a more complex process, using his LEGO building skills to create what he calls the Pip-Boy3000Si.

Simon didn’t provide any details about his replica’s construction, but as you’ll see in the video below it has a working display. Simon also said that it has an FM radio.

Here’s a side quest for you, vault dweller: find Simon’s Flickr page and you’ll be rewarded with three high resolution pictures of the Pip-Boy 3000Si.

Pip-Boy 3000 Made from Picture Frame 2012

Last year we saw a prototype for an unwearable Pip-Boy 3000, which involved using a smartphone to create a replica that was functional, or at least interactive. This hack is not as high tech, because it only uses a digital picture frame, but at least it’s wearable.

The replica was made by amateur prop maker and sculpture student Zachariah Perry as a gift for his brother. Awwww. As with the replica we saw last year, Zachariah also used the Pip-Boy alarm clock that was included in the Survival Edition of Fallout 3. Then he inserted the innards of a digital picture frame and covered it with the domed glass from a slide viewer, giving it a great retro look. He made three buttons to switch between the images being displayed on the frame, which are screenshots from the Pip-Boy 3000 of his brother’s Fallout save game. Double awwww. The knob at the lower left toggles the lights at the bottom of the display. Finally the separate, gizmo you see on the glove is an MP3 player, which he couldn’t fit inside the case of the alarm clock.

Now Zachariah’s brother is ready to leave their vault. Check out Zachariah’s blog for more pictures of the replica.

Adafruit modder builds Captain Jack’s Vortex Manipulator / Leela’s wrist-lo-jacko-mator for real

Image

This impressive wrist / forearm cuff is the brainchild of Adafruit forum member and modder Stephanie, who has built a sensor platform into the fashion accessory. The device can monitor the exposure value, track your movements over GPS, measure your galvanic skin response, tell you the temperature, humidity and even doubles as a watch and flash-light. It was built around Sparkfun's Pro Micro development board and a boatload of sensors purchased from Adafruit. We might just build one ourselves with a radiation detector, so that we can live out our Pip-Boy fantasies down at the mall.

PIP-Boy Prototype Has Practical Functions, Sadly V.A.T.S. Not One of Them

As crude as Fallout‘s post-apocalyptic technology seems, it’s proven quite hard to replicate the game’s PIP-Boy in real life. We’ve seen one prototype that looks exactly like the PIP-Boy 3000, but it appears to have no real world application. Meanwhile here’s another prototype that does have practical features but leaves a lot to be desired in terms of appearance.

As you can see this prototype looks nothing like any of the PIP-Boys from the Fallout games. Except for its user interface that is, which is the most important part of the gadget anyway. Made by Instructables vault dweller Aleator777, this prototype has a GPS navigation system, an RFID reader (with which it can track tagged items, thus mimicking an inventory), a flashlight (i.e. the screen with its brightness turned up) and most appropriate of all, a Geiger counter. Almost all of these functions are rudimentary, but nonetheless they are there.

Those of you with high stats in Repair and Science should check out Aleator777′s guide on Instructables to see how you can make your own PIP-Boy prototype. Perhaps Aleator777 and MyMagicPudding – the dude who’s working on the other prototype – should combine their skills to come up with a better device. We might need it soon; it is 2012 after all.

Custom Fallout Vault Dweller Sneakers Have a Pip-Boy in Each Tongue

You need an accessory if you are going to wear your Pip-Boy 3000 and I can’t think of anything better than these sneakers. Whether you are traveling to New Vegas or just one of the many vaults, they should get you across the American wastelands safely and still have some nice tread on them. fallout These are a one-of-a-kind custom job by shoe-artists Jacob Patterson and Emmanuelabor. They are more than just sneakers, they each have a jailbroken iPod Touch in place of the tongues, with a Pip-Boy theme of course, that feature sounds, themes, apps, music, and other Fallout goodies.

These sneakers are way too awesome to wear, but I would wear them anyway just to see the look on peoples faces.
