Matrix Threezero Armored Personnel Unit is Ready to Take on Tiny Squiddies

As much as I loved Niki Dregant’s LEGO version of the Armored Personnel Unit (APU) from The Matrix series, nothing beats a professional scale model. And that’s exactly what Threezero came up with. It’s 1:12 scale APU collectible stands 13.5″ tall, is fully posable and has light up guns.

To make it more realistic, the toy has metal springs, rubber hoses and movable pistons on its shoulders and legs. It also comes with a removable and fully posable pilot figure.

I know what you’re thinking: what about the ammo loaders? Threezero does have a scale model of the ground crew and their equipment, but those will be included only in the deluxe version of the APU.

You can pre-order the 1:12 scale APU sets on Threezero’s online store starting 2/16. The normal set costs $390 (USD) while the deluxe set costs $430. Enter the Matrix and head to Threezero’s Facebook page for more photos and info on the toy.

LEGO Star Wars Marriage Proposal Used Darth Vader as Ringbearer

You might not consider something that’s called a “Star Destroyer” as a symbol of eternal love. But that’s exactly how Star Wars fans Stephen Dempsey and his fiancé Amanda will remember the Imperial spaceship. Same goes for the parking lot where he proposed. Stephen created a scale model of the ship using LEGO and used it as the box to hold Amanda’s ring.

Speaking with The Daily Dot, Stephen said he originally wanted to present the ship and propose with a romantic dinner. But he didn’t want to risk damaging the ship until then, so he just popped the question at a parking lot. So why the Star Destroyer? Stephen explains, “I told her [Amanda] our love was like this ship and the people inside it. Its shields deflect and defend from any outside force wanting to get in and destroy us. Then I opened the star ship and there stood Darth Vader holding the engagement ring.”

As for Stephen’s ringbearer of choice, he said that Darth Vader’s love for Luke is a great example of sticking to your loved one’s side no matter what. Stephen, I hope this doesn’t mean you’ll abandon Amanda for decades, then cut off her hand before revealing that you’re her husband.

Kudos to Stephen for successfully pulling off a romantic Dark Side proposal. Check out Stephen’s Imgur page for more pictures of his geeky engagement project.

PlayStation History Collection 20th Anniversary Edition: Cuteness Awaits

A few years ago Takara Tomy released the PlayStation History Collection 1, which consists of scale models of the four original PlayStation variants. Gundam Gunpla Retro Anime Painted Action Figure: Oldtype

Warhammer toy figures may be the canvas for some of the best custom paint jobs, but Gunpla enthusiast mumumuno53 cleverly made a case for Gundam models with this jaw-dropping Gundam RX-78-2 figure, which he painted to make it look like its anime counterpart.

I’ve been looking at these images for hours and I still find it hard to break the illusion. Eventually the gloves give it away, but the rest is just immaculately painted. I don’t even want to guess if the jet exhausts are truly flat or not.

DIY Cardboard Millenium Falcon Came from Boxes Far, Far Away

Imgur user Thomas Richner had a few cardboard boxes lying around in his basement. Instead of simply throwing them away, the teacher and animator decided to bring back one of his hobbies as a kid: making scale models of the Millenium Falcon. Young Thomas would be so proud of you man.

star wars carboard millenium falcon by thomasrichner 620x413magnify

Thomas’ scale model is 5ft. long and is made almost entirely of the aforementioned boxes, save for a bit of balsa wood along the ship’s hull. Aside from the numerous panels and details on the ship, it also has retractable landing gear and a detachable radar dish. After a total of 140 hours of work, Thomas took the finished model to his school’s green screen set for a photoshoot. Check out Thomas’ album for more:

She looks like much and she’s got it where it counts. I hope you come upon a landfill’s worth of cardboard boxes Thomas.

Life-size T-Rex Skeleton Replica will Take Your Budget Back to the Cretacious

In 1992, amateur paleontologist Stan Sacrison discovered the bones of a Tyrannosaurus rex in South Dakota. The resulting skeleton was named after Stan. Made of 199 bones, STAN is world famous for being one of the most complete specimens ever found. He hangs out at the Black Hills Institute Museum (BHI Museum), but BHI also sells made to order 1:1 replicas of STAN.

STAN is about 15ft. tall and 40ft. wide. BHI makes his replicas out of resin, with steel support structures embedded in the “bones.” BHI can send a crew to assemble the skeleton in any anatomically possible pose. Sorry, millionaire who wants a life-size T-rex skeleton that’s scratching its nose. BHI has made several replicas of STAN, many of them used in museums. Here’s one of STAN’s clones, chilling at the University of Manchester’s museum:

As you may have expected, STAN’s skeleton is going to cost you. You can order one from Hammacher Schlemmer or directly from BHI for $100,000 (USD).

LEGO Classic Computer Set Concepts: Building Blocks

Professional LEGO builder Chris McVeigh is known for his miniature kits and building guides, including those of classic computers. But wouldn’t it be nice if there were LEGO sets of the machines you grew up with? If you think so too, support these concepts by LEGO Ideas member Fbsarts.

As of this writing, Fbsarts has four different concept sets. They all include pieces for the components inside each computer as well. There’s a Macintosh set

11th Doctor Who TARDIS 1:6 Scale Model: Smaller on the Outside

Doctor Who may be on its Twelfth Doctor, but with Matt Smith’s memorable run, the Eleventh Doctor is still dear to many Whovians. It’s no wonder many fans have been requesting Big Chief Studios to make a scale model of the last Time Lord’s ride.

The 1:6 scale model has various lights, an opening door and a backlit control room interior. The toy maker said, “[f]rom selecting the most appropriate wood to achieve an accurate scaled grain effect, to the lantern that adorns the roof, every detail has been carefully reproduced.”

Considering the attention to detail and the fact that Big Chief Studios’ toys typically cost several hundred dollars, expect this TARDIS to whisk your money to another dimension. Keep an eye on Big Chief Studios’ website for pre-order details.

LEGO Matrix Armored Personnel Unit: There is No Armor

Zion’s Armored Personnel Units (APUs) and the bloody battle they waged were two of the most memorable parts of The Matrix Revolutions. The APUs look primitive, unoptimized and anthropomorphized, exactly the opposite of the Sentinels controlled by the Machines. Niki Dregant captured the APU’s design perfectly with his LEGO scale model.

lego matrix armored personnel unit niki dregant 620x574magnify

Niki says the APU is made of about 700 pieces, and that the movement range of its legs and arms are similar to that of its movie counterpart.

Head to Niki’s Flickr page for more shots of his LEGO APU, as well as a bonus Zion warrior. He’s also working on a LEGO version of the Sentinels. Niki said he submitted it to LEGO Ideas, but the site rejected it because of its guns. Oh well, at least the Exo Suit was approved.

LEGO Retro Arcade Machine: Stud Operated

We’ve seen tiny arcade cabinets as well as a life-sized and fully functional LEGO arcade machine. But while msx80‘s idea isn’t new, he makes up for it by packing a lot of details in a small package.

Not only does this cabinet have a cute joystick and two tiny buttons, it also has coin slots, a coin collector tray and a “circuit board.” But the best part of this scale model is that it has interchangeable cartridges… which are also the displays. Clever!
