This DIY desk chair doubles as a doghouse and bed to get those little puppies off your lap!

Simone Giertz, a self-described maker, robotics enthusiast, and non-engineer, has a dog, Scraps who loves to sit on her lap and a desk chair that could be improved because of it. Dogs especially like sitting on top of you when you’re working on less important matters, like your job. Searching up and down Google’s limits, Giertz noticed time and time again that there weren’t any desk chairs on the market designed for people with small dogs whose preferred seated position was located anywhere on their owner’s body. So, in the trailblazing nature of her YouTube channel, she designed her own.

In her uploaded YouTube video, A chair made for needy pets Giertz takes us through the construction of both the chair’s initial prototype and its final form. Using Fusion 360, Giertz created a 3D model of the pet chair. The model features an enclosed crate, the main dog door, footrest, stairs, and roof to also work as Giertz’s seat. Employing CNC milling to construct the chair’s top seat and roof, sidewalls, stairs, and front entryway, Giertz cut vertical ridges along the sidewalls to bend them around the radius of the chair. After mounting the pieces of plywood together to form the prototype’s planned structure, Giertz uses screws to attach them, but the finished prototype saw some improvements.

Giertz turned to CNC milling to construct the chair’s bottom piece, this time formed in two sections to fit onto the CNC bed. On top of the chair’s joined bottom piece, the rest of the CNC-milled pieces of plywood came together. To help Scraps move up and down the chair’s steps with more confidence, Giertz narrowed the distance between the steps and added a railing system to border the chair’s stairs, main seat, and roof.

Increasing the size of the dog house’s main door and solving the trouble that came with bent plywood, Giertz opted for a fuller opening located in the spot where the plywood had to bend around the chair’s radius, leaving less tension in the wood. To see Giertz build the chair from the ground up and paint it a “moldy, vomit color,” as she describes (although I’d like even a moldier seafoam green) – scroll below and be sure to watch the video on Giertz’s YouTube channel!

Designer: Simone Giertz

Using Fusion 360, Giertz created a 3D model.

Using CNC milling, Giertz had her pieces of plywood ready for construction.

To connect the chair’s walls to its base, Giertz relied on peg-and-socket building methods.

Giertz eventually decided on using screws to connect the pieces of the chair together.

To help Scraps feel more comfortable moving up and down the stairs, Giertz thought to add in a railing system.

The final prototype saw improvements for the stairs and built-in railing.

Stepping away from ridge-bent plywood, Giertz increased the size of the chair’s entryway to get rid of some of the tension in the plywood.

Finally, Giertz incorporated a railing for the top of the chair and doghouse roof so that she could comfortably lean back.

The finished product includes the fundamental features from the initial prototype, including stairs and footrest.

To enhance the chair’s overall usability, Giertz integrated pull-out drawers into the stairs.

YouTuber known for ‘shitty robots’ turns Tesla Model 3 into pickup truck

Why wait on Elon Musk to deliver your perfect vehicle when you can just make one yourself? YouTuber and inventor Simone Giertz needed a truck to carry materials for her creations, but didn't want a gas-guzzling pickup. So the 28-year-old robotics ent...

Simone Giertz Builds a Westworld Robot

Westworld is known for its lifelike robot “hosts” that you can’t tell from humans. Simone Giertz, on the other hand, is known for building really crappy robots. In fact, she’s the Queen of Shitty Robots. So the folks at Delos would never ask Simone to build them a robot for their murder-park. Because what you will get is a funny-looking, hilarious host knockoff that is both stupid and creepy looking as hell.

She used a medical doll as the base, then set out to replicate two of the most important elements of a Westworld host: talking and arm-movement. She wanted to make it look like herself, hoping to get on the hit HBO show. You know, having seen the finished robot, I’m not sure that it will make it into the show. What do you think?

I don’t think we will need to worry about whether Simone’s robots are human or not. It’s painfully obvious. I’d actually like to see her in charge of a robot theme park though because it would be a real horror show. That’s a show I’d like to see HBO make. It would give both adults and kids some serious nightmares if this robot is any indication. Please stop making this thing move its mouth.

Turning a Car Into a Computer Mouse: Double-honk to Run

Simone Giertz is known for building some not so great robots. When not building crappy robots, she likes to do other weird and wonderful things. Take, for example, her latest project, in which she teamed up with William Osman to modify her tiny electric Citicar, aka Cheese Louise. She didn’t turn it into a crappy robot though.

The duo turned this tiny car into a computer mouse – one that can draw a picture on a computer screen just by driving the car, and mashing on the horn to click. Just so you know, Giertz only recently got her driver’s license, and the car is around 30 years old. Despite these things, the project was (mostly) a success, and the video is pretty fun to watch.

I also included Osman’s video about the project, since it’s longer and goes into more detail about how they did it. It doesn’t draw very well, but the idea is cool.

It’s pretty impressive stuff, but now I expect them to do bigger projects together. Also, I’m hoping that they eventually are able to drive around in this tiny car and play Rocket League in real time. I’d settle for Mario Kart though if that’s too tough.

Simone Giertz’s Robot Applies 1000 Layers of Lipstick

Simone Giertz is at it again, not that she ever really stops making crappy robots that do crappy things. That’s what we like about her. This time she wanted to be part of YouTube’s 100-layer club, so she made a basic robot to automatically apply lipstick onto her face.

Unlike her original lipstick robot, this one is much simpler, and a bit more accurate. It applies the lipstick and also counts the layers being applied. She wasn’t going to settle for just 100 layers though. She set the bar high and decided to go for 1,000 layers of lipstick. I can’t imagine that would look bad or anything. Well, watch the clip and see for yourself.

By the end, she looks like a villain from a Batman movie, don’t you think?

Simone Giertz Builds a Cute, But Crappy Robot Dog

Simone Giertz is the queen of building crappy robots. It’s her calling. We love her for it. Her latest robot may be the cutest/crappiest robot yet.

robot_dog_1
Here’s some backstory on this sad robot dog: YouTube celeb JennaMarbles gave a shout out to Simone in one of her videos, so what better way to return the compliment than to build a shitty robot version of her dog Kermit? And so, this 4-legged highly non-functional robot was born. It has a servo on each leg, but still can’t walk around properly. It is so terrible at moving around, I feel sorry for the thing. Maybe she should just put it out of it’s misery.

One day, Simone is going to go too far and one of her terrible robots will become sentient, and we are all gonna be screwed.

Simone Giertz Invents a Pokémon GO Helmet

Simone Giertz makes some pretty crazy inventions, and this time she is going after the Pokémon GO craze. How would you like to play the game without using your hands, so that they’re free to do other stuff, like flip people off for stealing your Pikachu? Well, she created a cool helmet that will let you do that and more.

Simone created what appears to be the world’s first Pokémon GO helmet. The device holds your smartphone in front of your face. This leaves your hands free to punch people getting in the way of your catch.

Sadly, she has no plans to cash in on this device, so if you want one, you’ll have to make your own.
