AI-generated photos put a poetic twist on the relationship between man and machine

Humans today have become dependent on machines in more ways than one, whether they realize it or not. From the vehicles that get us to work and back to the smartphones in our pockets to the contentious AI that’s making headlines, our daily lives are affected and influenced by machines in all shapes and sizes, even those we can’t see. While humans created machines as tools of convenience, our relationship with them hasn’t always been sunshine and roses. Some people have even taken an antagonistic outlook on these man-made objects, especially when those machines threaten our way of life or our very lives. At the same time, however, man’s innate curiosity also gives way to awe, wonder, and sometimes even joy, expressions that are conveyed in these images that were aptly generated using the help of a machine.

Designer: Emilio Alarcón

Of all the modern technologies that are generating debates in all walks of life around the world, AI is probably right at the top. Although the concept has been around for decades, recent developments that have made the technology more amazing but also more concerning because of the implications of the misuse of highly advanced AI. Hollywood and popular media further exacerbate the situation, causing an almost negative bias against new machines in general.

“Machines that listen to human conversations” is a collection of images that try to turn the narrative around on its head in a poetic and almost subtle way. It is also poetic, but perhaps also a bit controversial, that the realistic-looking photos were generated using the popular AI platform MidJourney. Of course, it is just a tool like any other, and the iterative art process was still initiated, guided, and judged by human creativity.

The photo set revolves around scenarios where steampunk-like machines are literally inserted into the midst of human life. Sometimes they’d be in the middle of streets or sidewalks, while there are times when they’re attached to human heads. In some cases, the machines are left alone, but most of the scenes show humans interacting with the objects. Although the theme is explained as machines observing, listening, and accompanying humans, it is also as much about humans interacting with the machines with curiosity, wonder, and even delight, a stark contrast to the emotions generated whenever AI gets mentioned in the news.

There is also some poetic irony in how these images are the very examples of why AI is getting such negative publicity. If not for the artist’s own explanation, few would have realized that these are AI-generated images. These programs have come so far to the point that only very discerning people will be able to notice the difference. At the same time, however, the photos also express the reasons why machines can also bring us joy, piquing our curiosities and giving us more ways to interact and experience our world.

Watch this AI-powered Chessboard with Autonomously Moving Pieces in Action

Someone needs to 3D print some Harry Potter-style chess pieces for this AI-powered chessboard RIGHT NOW!

This AI-powered chessboard features a backlit checkered surface that gives you color-coded move recommendations, autonomous moving pieces, and the ability to play either in person, against an AI, or with people online who can remotely move chess pieces. The best part? The magnets within the chessboard can actually make the king fall over in the event of a checkmate, adding that perfect bit of drama to conclude the game.

Chess pieces move on their own.

AI and Chess have had a long relationship dating back as early as 1996, when an AI program named Deep Blue defeated then-grandmaster Gary Kasparov in a game of chess… now, GoChess is making that relationship even more intertwined. Sort of doing to chess what self-driving AI did to cars, GoChess integrates AI and robotics into the chess board, letting you either play a normal game of chess against a human, or a robot-powered game against the GoChess AI or a remote human player. With the latter, the chess board can move your opponent’s pieces on its own, blurring the lines between technology and magic.

Your game is automatically set up.

Outwardly, the chessboard sticks to tradition with its overall design. The board comes in classic black plastic or wood variants, sporting the 8×8 checkered surface on top along with 32 minimally designed chess pieces. However, under its hood, the GoChess board is thrillingly state-of-the-art. Robots with magnets hover around underneath the surface, magnetically dragging pieces across the board as you play either with an AI or with an online opponent. Meanwhile, the entire chessboard comes with backlit squares that glow when you lift a piece, highlighting all possible move combinations. The squares also glow in different colors, highlighting how effective or ineffective the move is. At each turn, the active player’s chess pieces glow green, letting them know it’s their turn to play… and easily my most favorite bit, the chess pieces will even auto-arrange themselves at the start of a game, so you don’t have to!

Smart lights guide and coach you.

Unlike your analog chess board, GoChess isn’t for just playing, it’s for training too. The board can coach you in real time, with insights and up to 32 levels of difficulty to help you level up your gameplay. Backlit squares help you understand where different pieces can move across the board, and the AI guides you through popular gameplaying strategies, helping you understand the intricacies of Chess. When you’re seasoned enough to take on an opponent, you can either play a regular old-style game versus a human, or challenge the GoChess board itself and play against its AI.

GoChess also gives you the option of playing against thousands of online players who play on the app, which connects to Lichess.org and Chess.com, and directly interfaces with the board, moving the pieces the way a human would.

Designed by the folks at GoCube, who also get credit for creating the world’s first AI-powered Rubik’s Cube, the GoChess board comes in 3 models. The GoChess Lite simply features the board’s upper veneer (with none of the self-moving robot-powered magic) that you can use for analog gameplay. The AI-powered robotic boards come in two variants – the 1X, which has just 1 robot on the inside, capable of moving one pieces at a time, and the 4X, which has 4 robot modules that can move multiple pieces at the same time. The board interfaces with the GoChess app on your phone using Bluetooth Low Energy, and has a built-in battery that can charge via USB-C. All GoChess boards offer two stylistic choices – modern black and white board with minimally designed plastic chess pieces, or a classic wood-veneer board with traditional-looking wooden pieces to match. You can grab your AI-powered GoChess board for as low as $259 (that’s 32% off the original price) and chuck in $59 for a branded Deluxe GoChess Bag that makes carrying your AI-powered game to the park or a friend’s house much easier!

Top 5 Midjourney Artists using Artificial Intelligence to push the boundaries of creativity

I increasingly find it harder and harder to imagine a world without AI creation tools. In a matter of just a few months these tools have gone justifiably mainstream, and no matter where you look, there’s really no escaping them. Don’t get me wrong though, I don’t mean to paint these tools in a bad light, because we’ve seen them be capable of creating some stunning pieces of work, whether images, text, podcasts, or even music (if you haven’t heard the AI Drake and The Weeknd collab, go do it right now)! The first industry to be truly revolutionized by AI is probably the world of art, with text-to-image models like Midjourney turning everyone into an instant artist. Art forms a backbone to many disciplines of design – architecture definitely being one of them. Today we take a look at how creatives are using AI tools to revolutionize the world of architecture by either introducing fresh perspectives into it, or by carrying architecture to other design disciplines to make something refreshingly new. Here are 5 Top Midjourney Artists who are disrupting architecture with their AI-based creations!

Hassan Ragab (@hsnrgb)

Probably the hottest name in AI art, Hassan Ragab is an Egyptian architect based out of California, with over a decade of experience in computational architecture. Ragab took the internet by storm with his AI-based creations early on, making some unusually beautiful building facades using AI text-to-image tools. Over the months, he’s also experimented with AI videos, using tools to turn human movement into architecture (Ragab captured Michael Jackson’s dance and turned each frame into a modern building. He also did a similar exercise with a ballerina’s dance). His secret sauce, however, remains the fact that along with Midjourney, he’s also using his own custom blend of AI tools by training machines on his own architectural works over the past decade. Head to his Instagram to check out some AI architectural magic!

Arturo Tedeschi (@arturotedeschi)

Tedeschi has, for years, mastered the art of algorithmic design. It’s how nature thinks and works, he says, and using algorithms is his way of imitating nature’s balance between being artistic and efficient. A master of generative design (and an author of multiple books), he’s now begun shifting his focus on training and using AI tools to create designs. Arturo’s work isn’t simply limited to architecture, as he experiments with all sorts of AI tools and disciplines. He even recreated some MET Gala looks on his Instagram using Midjourney and is a master of understanding how to use AI to get just the right desired results. Visit his Instagram page to see what he’s up to and you can even sign up for his Domestika course of using Grasshopper’s algorithms for 3D modeling.

Shail Patel (@shael.ai)

Indian-origin Architectural Designer Shail Patel (who goes by @shael.ai on the gram) has a supremely good command over Midjourney, weaving together whimsical images of bubble homes and vehicles, vivid facades for luxury brand shops, and combining art and design in unusual ways. Shail’s designs are almost always grandiose, but have an element about them that still brings a childlike curiosity, whether it’s bubble-shaped designs, or entire fashion gowns made out of greenery. Shail’s always creating vivid new pieces of work on his Instagram page.

Ulises Design Studio (@ulises.ai)

If you love Shail’s work, you’re sure to find the Ulises.AI Instagram account just as fascinating. The Berlin-based studio specializes in ideating and realizing concepts using AI, and has collaborated with ArchDaily and its subsidiary website, DesignBoom. A lot of their work exists within the realm of architecture as they explore new materials, styles, and even architectural movements by using AI. Check out their Instagram page to see the kind of world we’d live in, if the folks at Ulises had their way!

Str4ngething (@str4ngething)

The Banksy of this list, Str4ngeThing is a faceless, identity-less being (or a group of beings) that blends the lines between fashion and architecture, simultaneously merging haute style with Renaissance elements. It’s very difficult to build a “style” while using AI tools (because the AI will use its entire database to make a variety of designs across multiple styles), but Str4ngeThing does that pretty well, with this visual niche of theirs. In fact, this eclectic blend has earned them features in Vogue, Hypebeast, High Snobiety, and even on leading NFT platforms. What really sets Str4ngeThing apart from other artists on this list is their careful blend of two distinct styles that help create something totally avant-garde. In their own way, they’ve reinvented the Renaissance and Art Noveau movements, bringing AI to them. Check out their brilliant work on their Instagram account.

This Instagrammer’s collection of Hype Chairs sneakerizes classic furniture designs to awe us

Marco Rambaldi is a dreamer and for a ‘dreamer, reality is boring!’ No wonder he has employed AI and Photoshop skills to relieve his boredom and conjure up Hype Chairs that dress as Nike sneakers.

While the Instagrammer, who goes by the name of MarkVonRama, has sneakerheads drooling over his imagined versions of chairs; his handle comes with a disclaimer ‘nothing real and nothing for sale.’ This can be information for those who don’t lose sanity in awe; but the awed only realize the obvious after bombarding the comment section with needy blabber.

Designer: MarkVonRama

The artist and designer’s chair designs include Nike makeover of furniture pieces from Herman Miller and Miles van der Rohe. In addition to the sneaker-themed chairs, he previously shared sneaker-themed AI houses on the social media platform, which also garnered ample attraction.

MarkVonRama’s latest creation reimagines the Eames Lounge and Ottoman as Air Jordan 1 Retro High “Chicago” and the Eames Molded Shell Rocking chair as the Ambush Air Force 1. Since the Hype Chairs are not meant for lounging and are only for the eyes; the creative liberty has Jump man logo, fabric tags, and Swooshes all protruding from the sides of these furniture pieces.

There are eight chairs in the collection some of which – other than the AJ 1 and AF 1 – are based on designs from Mies van der Rohe and Vitra. These have armrests featuring Swooshes and lace eyelets from Air Jordan 4, adding to the sneaker-inspired aesthetic.

Multi-decker caravans set in retro-futuristic world are epitome of luxury on wheels

We’ve seen double-story tiny homes on wheels, trailers and caravans. But to have a multilevel living space on wheels is quite strange. That’s the power of AI and you already know where we are headed to.

The theme here is retro-futurism setting the tone for a world where laws of physics are a little haywire. That’s because stacking more than two levels of living space on a van chassis needs a super strong platform and definitely a crazy set of tires that can bear such weight. But then we are talking about AI and going out of the box to make things super interesting.

Designer: Ulises Design Studio

The Berlin-based studio continues its journey of creating hyper-realistic worlds using the popular AI design tool Midjourney. The new part of the series “Kinetic Kingdoms” is set in a desert landscape the multi-decker caravans are like luxe mansions but in a stacked vertical configuration. From what I can see, all basic amenities and the dose of aesthetic luxury can be seen from the clear windows. This multi-level living space has lavish bedrooms, living rooms, spacious kitchens and some even have rooftop terraces. Now that’s even better than an expansive apartment in a metropolis.

Either Ulises Design Studio or AI itself has picked on the keyword for using classic cars and vans of the yesteryears as the platform for this dreamy living space. Ricardo Orts, founder of the studio says that “by embracing a more nomadic lifestyle, we can explore new ways of living that are both exciting and sustainable, all while fostering a sense of community and connection with the world around us.’

One query still lingering in mind though-how does, one go from one level to the other? Are there any compact stairs or did the AI just forget to factor in that element? Either way, the concepts rendered here are too far from reality and will remain just a pipedream, unless we are talking of a time decades in the future.

Facial Recognition & Medication Reminder – At a scheduled time, EBO X can find the specific family member by facial recognition, and send the medication reminders in voice.

The EBO X boasts multiple modes that make it a pretty versatile bionic buddy to have around the house. While its most obvious function remains that of a security robot, the EBO X also happens to be a nice butler/companion to have around the house. It responds to voice commands, plays music through its Harman speakers, and engages with children and pets by zooming around the house and displaying colorful light patterns and effects. Its playful demeanor doesn’t take away from the fact that the EBO X is also a pretty capable surveillance bot. Apart from monitoring the house for anomalies or intruders, the robot also has fall-and-cry detection features that help alert you against incidents. You can designate certain parts of the house as anti-trespass zones and the EBO X will alert you if anyone ventures too close to them, and the camera, microphone, and speakers built into the robot also support two-way communication so you can talk to people at home while you’re away at work.

EBO X can be instructed, monitored, and customized through a number of input styles. The robot accepts voice commands for itself, and even has Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant built-in, letting you give it instructions for your smart home. EBO X’s maker Enabot claims that the robot will support ChatGPT too following a future firmware update, making your robot much more intelligent at understanding nuanced commands. The robot also has touch-panels on its body for simple tasks like making calls or changing the robot’s eye colors. For more complex tasks as well as for monitoring the EBO’s surveillance footage, the app proves to be the most handy. The app gives you a POV of EBO X’s camera, and on-screen controls let you maneuver it like a personal drone, moving around the house. The app is also the EBO X’s alert center, sharing any video or images with you to alert you if there’s anything concerning.

With not one but two CES Innovation Awards under its belt along with a coveted iF Design Award, the EBO X is Enabot’s third home robot. Bigger and better than its predecessors, it still retains that cute demeanor that makes the EBO X such a wonderful companion to have in your home. Once configured, EBO X works autonomously for the most part, and will automatically head to its charging dock once its battery hits critical levels. Once charged, it gets back to surveilling your house, and sending you reminders and alerts based on its objectives. Each EBO X robot comes with its charging dock (and cable/plug), the EBO HOME app, a Quick-Start guide to get your EBO X rolling, and a 1-year warranty. These AI-generated self-contained living pods under city bridges bring an affordable solution to society problems

Homelessness is an ever-prevailing issue that only seems to be growing as time passes. Architect Shail Patel decided to create and harness a rather innovative and unique solution to address the complex social issue that is space shortage in an increasingly expensive world. He utilized the artificial intelligence design tool Midjourney to create a series of modular pods that are designed to help those in a tough situation find a space for the night or even become a permanent place they can count on.

Designer: Shail Patel

Shail’s plan is to bring to life and utilize urban spaces, particularly the areas under bridges, that are otherwise ignored and have been forgotten. He aims to make use of modular design to build a safe, clean, and respectful living space for the homeless population. He wants to transform these ignored urban spaces into decent and dignified homes for them. The plan is to build pods that function as self-contained living spaces which will provide citizens with a private and comfortable home throughout the year.

The pods will feature heating and cooling systems, ventilation, and natural light. In fact, they will even be built using eco-friendly materials. The pods have been imparted with a modular form to ensure easy construction and assembly. This allows the project to be quickly expanded as and when needed, providing homes to the needy in a swift and efficient manner. As mentioned earlier, the pods are built using sustainable materials, which gives them a lot of longevity, and they’re also supposed to be quite durable. They will be equipped with energy-efficient features such as rainwater harvesting and solar panels. Patel’s careful consideration and design of the bridge pods will definitely ensure that they have a small carbon footprint.

Given that this sector is highly unorganized, we hope that training and teaching is the method used to regulate this environment for the prolonged success of this project.

Since these pods are going to be placed in empty lots under bridges, which may not always be the safest, measures have been taken to ensure the safety of the residents. The sites will be equipped with state-of-the-art security systems. Staff such as social workers and healthcare professionals who can provide counseling, job training, and healthcare for rehabilitation will be assigned to the pod sites. Patel hopes that these pods will be introduced to cities and communities all over the world, providing an ingenious and innovative solution to the current cycle of poverty and space constraints in a rapidly changing world.

This spherical robot is your smart home guard and your family companion

Our homes are starting to be filled with technology, and not just from the computers and smartphones that we use day in and day out. But despite all the advancements in software, AI, and human-computer interaction, these technologies still feel distant and almost impersonal. Even those “personal” AI assistants are nothing more than disembodied voices that can hear us and not much else. These devices and services do make life convenient, but they don’t always help us with the other important things in life, like connecting with or checking up with another, especially when we’re not at home. The average human spends 26 years of their life sleeping and 30 years of their life working. That leaves just 1~2 hours in a day to truly connect with family, elders, or pets if we’re lucky. With all that time apart and no one there to supervise, there can be a lot of concern about the health and safety of our loved ones. This is why Enabot created the EBO X, your family’s protector, companion, and playmate. Smart home security cameras just don’t cut it, especially because they lack that “human touch,” and that is the kind of connection that this adorable moving homebot is trying to make while also making sure that your family and house are safe.

Smart Mapping – Provides EBO X with autonomous & accurate movement ability. Upon first use, EBO X will travel through your house using V-SLAM technology. This will allow EBO X to travel anywhere in the house.

Self-balanced Two-wheeled Design – EBO X ensures flexible mobility and high-precision motion control. EBO X can move around your home with ease and turn 360 degrees smoothly.

4K Stabilized Camera – EBO X’s 4K camera is one-axis stabilized, and the vertical angle is adjustable within a range of 104 degrees. EBO X has an 8-megapixel ultra low-light sensor and provides the super large 106-degree FOV.

Edge Detection & Obstacle Avoidance – With multiple built-in dToF and ALS sensors, EBO X will stop itself from crossing any edge and avoid obstacles.

EBO X is, first and foremost, a smart guardian for the home and the family. Thanks to its self-balanced two-wheeled design and especially its smart mapping capabilities, it can go reach almost any part of your house. Despite this, users can set up restricted areas to protect their privacy. Not only can it map the layout of your house using V-SLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), detecting edges and deftly avoiding obstacles, it can see clearly no matter the time of day or night with its stabilized 4K camera and 8MP ultra low-light sensor. It can even hear and turn towards the source of a sound, following not only your voice but also a potential accident.

Elderly Fall Alert – EBO X can be set to detect the fall-down of an elderly during auto-cruising. lf detected, it will send alerts through 3 optional ways to ask for help.

Crying & Call-for-help Alert – If your child is crying, EBO X will detect it and trigger an App call to you. Besides, EBO X will inform you through the App call if anyone at home is experiencing an emergency and calls for help.

Facial Recognition & Medication Reminder – At a scheduled time, EBO X can find the specific family member by facial recognition, and send the medication reminders in voice.

Unlike even the smartest home security systems, the EBO X robot is also your family’s protector. It can detect and report when someone, especially an elderly person, has fallen down and alert family or emergency services. It can do the same for someone crying for help, calling your attention through the app. It can also help prevent accidents in the first place by reminding family members to take their medication, even when no one else is around. It can use facial recognition to find your loved one around the house and give them a gentle nudge to take their meds.

The robot, however, does more than just secure your home and safeguard your family. It puts a face on these technologies, literally and figuratively. EBO X’s cute face will endear itself to members of your family, regardless of their ages. It can follow kids around, ensuring their safety while also keeping them entertained with sound effects and music through its premium Harman AudioEFX speaker. EBO X also uses Alexa Voice Control, so every convenience is just a voice command away. The robot can take pictures of the whole family, or it can even take low-angle photos of your furry family members. It can act as a two-way communication between those at home and those far away, bridging the distance in a far more interesting way than a simple call.

Enabot designed EBO X with privacy protection at the forefront of our minds, and Enabot truly focused on user privacy and made some improvements. For example, all the media files could be optionally stored only on the local SD card, and you can use the privacy switch in the App to remotely turn off the gimbal camera. You can also physically press the gimbal button on the camera, which can completely obscure the camera from the product structure. When EBO X detects that the gimbal is completely closed, it will stop video recording. Besides this, the circular 4-array microphone at the top can also be powered off at the hardware level to ensure that the camera and microphone are not being monitored or bugged.

Protector, companion, and playmate, the EBO X robot puts an emphasis on the “home” part of smart homes. Combining three devices in one, the agile smart guardian keeps your family safe, entertained, and comfortable, creating an environment that you can truly call home. All these for a sweet Super Early Bird price of $569, a large $430 discount off its $999 MSRP.
