One of the coolest companies out there for the DIY and Maker scene has got to be Inventables. Based here in my home town of Chicago, they not only sell a wide variety of materials and equipment for 3D printing, milling and laser cutting, they also make some gear themselves.
The latest addition to their product lineup is the X-Carve, a 3D carving machine that can create models from plastic, wood or metal. The machine works in concert with Inventables’ easy-to-use Easel software for uploading models and controlling the machine’s movements. For those familiar with the Shapeoko & Shapeoko 2, the X-Carve is the next evolution of these already very solid machines, offering improvements in ease of use, durability, modularity and versatility.
One of the really cool things about the X-Carve is that the machine is flexible in terms of its bed size. You’ll be able to choose from off-the-shelf 500x500mm (~19.7″ x 19.7″) and 1000x1000mm (~39.4″ x 39.4″) machines, which provide approximately 12″ and 31″ of work area respectively. You can also make a machine at your own special size. Thanks to this flexibility, the machine can be used to make everything from signs to skateboards to pieces for assembling furniture.
X-Carve kits will start at as little as $799(USD) for everything you need to get up and running, to a “fully-loaded” kit with a large bed and a few other enhancements for $1256. You can also spend as little as $292 for the core components – though you’ll need to add to that if you want a fully functional machine.
You can pre-order your X-Carve today, and machines start shipping this April 30th. For those who already own a Shapeoko 2, Inventables is offering an upgrade kit for $200. You can learn more about the X-Carve and its capabilities in the video below:
3D printers are getting cooler and cooler every day. Resolutions are quickly approaching the point where it’s possible to create very, very detailed surfaces with a minimum of aliasing. Yeah, I’m calling it “aliasing,” since that’s basically what it is and most of you geeks get the reference. What the ZMorph 2.0.S can do, however, is a lot more. That said, the 0.001mm Z-axis resolution is pretty sweet.
The base printer is €1,499 (~$1,870 USD) and with it one can purchase a number of heads. There are the expected ABS/PLA/Nylon/Woodlay/etc. extruders in 3 mm and a sexy 1.75 m; a dual-head extruder for building in two materials at once; a chocolate/cake extruder, which is both delicious and cool; a milling and engraving toolhead (AKA Dremel holder) that turns the device into a CNC machine of sorts; a ceramics extruder, for those who don’t like to get their hands dirty; a laser for precision cutting wood, paper, plastic and the like; and a 5-axis toolhead that enables the device to do precision milling, 3D scanning, or whatever other cool things people come up with.
I would kill to have a moment alone with this thing.

Are you too lazy to get the door? Have you ever lugged yourself out of bed to the sound of the doorbell ringing, only to open it and find that there’s no one there? Or did you open it to find one of those annoying salesmen who just can’t take a hint?
If this happens to you more often than you’d like, then you might want to consider getting the iDoorCam, so you won’t ever have to deal with stuff like this ever again.
The iDoorCam is basically what its name implies. It’s a doorbell with a built-in camera that’s activated when someone rings it. Once pressed, it sends an alert to your iPhone or iPad (yes, it only works with iDevices), where you can then check out the live feed from the doorbell, provided you’re connected to the Internet.
You can choose to speak to whoever’s at the door (it’d be fun to watch their reactions the first time you do this) or ignore whoever is there altogether.
The iDoorCam will be available this October and it will retail for $165 (USD).
The problem with our fancy gadgets and social media is that it’s now easier than ever to get lost in documenting experiences rather than just experiencing them! While you’re clicking the record button, life is passing you by! This far-out video recording concept, the Nikon LIN, aims to capture life’s experiences without distraction, allowing the user to live freely and relive the experience later in 3D. How?! With a flying camera that floats above your head and wearable glasses cam that together see everything you see! DO WANT!
The system actually consists of two elements- the first is the flying cam that captures 360 degree views in 3D, and the other is a wearable pin-cam that records experiences from the user’s perspective.
Logitech's collection of subtle HD webcams launched a few months ago, but an unannounced WiFi-connected camera has appeared at the FCC. Labelled up as the Logitech Broadcaster, a little bit of investigation reveals that the camera may be able to function unencumbered by cabling, similar to Livestream's identically-named Broadcaster add-on or the ill-fated FlipLive cams. Connected through WiFi -- thus explaining its appearance at the FCC -- we still don't know specifics on how it'll be powered, whether it's through a self-contained battery or otherwise. Until then, emissions and wavelength obsessives can direct themselves to the source for the science.
Action cameras. We love 'em. Much like buying new sports gear, owning one makes you feel one step closer to the adventurer you know your true self to be. While we're familiar with more than one contender for the "gnarly throne", who said there wasn't room in the rankings for one more? Veho's been making pocket-friendly cameras for some time, even of the action variety, but this latest edition -- in conjunction with No Proof No Glory (an extreme sports video hub) -- sees it making the clearest move yet towards carving its own slice of the high-octane pie.
The latest member of the Muvi HD family will do you full HD at 30fps, along with 720p (at both 30 and 60 fps) plus the usual other resolutions -- 960p, WVGA, etc. Of course, it'll also do stills (if you don't mind them all being wide-angle) and it'll even just record audio if you like. So far, so good. What really got us interested, though, was that Veho has squashed two of our most common bug-bears with action cameras by including a viewfinder / screen and a remote control as standard.
