A modular lamp with an industrial aesthetic is the perfect space-saving desk accessory

Sooner or later, we all run out of desk space. Even the most spacious desk falls victim not only to clutter but also to the necessary items that we use for work or entertainment. That’s why some people prefer products that serve multiple functions or modular ones that can be configured to their needs. Sometimes, however, the simplest solution is opting for a piece of furniture or accessory that takes up as little space as possible without actually sacrificing functionality. Piú is such a lamp that looks incredibly thin as if it barely has anything to offer. Looks can be deceiving, as they say, and this industrial-styled accessory distills its functionality to its most basic form.

Designer: Maximilian Helmut Ewert

What makes a lamp take up so much space? In most cases, it’s the base that eats up space on a surface, but there are times when bulky lampshades also leave little room for other things to stand beside it. In both cases, however, the real culprits are the electronics that make the lamp function, parts that are either housed in the base or stored in the head of the lamp.

Piú puts a different spin on the desk lamp by compressing its form as much as possible without compromising its features. In fact, this space-efficient design even makes it possible for the lamp to be used in more than one way. While many lamps either stand on a desk or stick to a wall, Piú can do both, though not simultaneously, of course. You can even switch between those two modes in a flash.

The secret is that everything that the lamp needs to function is stored inside the lampshade. Instead of a nearly perfect cone, that lampshade has a flattened side that serves as the compartment for all the electronics. The lamp shade itself is compressed tightly to include just enough space for all the important pieces, nothing more, nothing less. The end result is a lamp that can actually be moved around and used without any base or holder, presuming you are near enough to a wall socket.

The base and stem of the desk lamp itself are pretty bare and don’t take up much room. The lamp head is held up by a thin metal rod that has no other attachment or detail. The lamp head stays in place thanks to its own weight without using any adhesive or complicated mechanics. It is equally easy to attach it to a similar hook hanging on a wall, instantly turning it into a wall lamp.

Piú’s understated design belies its best feature, providing proper lighting in the most minimalist form possible. It makes no room for excesses, whether in parts or decoration, but its industrial aesthetic makes it stand out enough to provide a pleasing decoration on top of your desk or on your wall. It is form and function smashed together in the simplest shapes possible, making it the perfect light source for an already crowded desk.

The Riffle LED Lamp’s elbow mysteriously hides a hinge

Different kinds of lamps can be found everywhere, whether at home, office, restaurant, hotel lobbies, or even in the streets, as they provide illumination and help create a mood or atmosphere. They furnish any room with adequate or ambient lighting throughout a space, affecting the mood, whether for relaxation or productivity. They are ready in different styles, sizes, colors, and luminescence levels while offering decorative purposes to an otherwise dim or dull home. Depending on one’s type or preference, or the aesthetics of a home, lamps must match the surroundings and be able to provide the proper lighting. Throughout the centuries, we have seen how lamp designs evolve, and we can expect the development will be rapid as more people get creative and are given a platform to eventually reach production and get marketed.

Design: Nobuaki Sato

Nobuaki Sato Riffle LED Lamp Details

Nobuaki Sato, a designer from Tokyo, has designed the Riffle LED Lamps made of walnut veneer in two different styles: desktop and floor-standing. The Riffle LED Desktop lamp is obviously smaller, while the Riffle LED Floor-standing Lamp is taller. Either style appears like scraps of wood nailed together to become a toy gun for kids, but this is really a lamp with LED lights, although they are hidden inside the top arm that also functions as the head. There is no lampshade here, so illumination is direct on a surface or the floor.

Nobuaki Sato Riffle LED Lamp Details

The lamp’s elbow is where the mysterious hinge is placed, looking like the head of a bamboo folding fan. The elbow portion appears to be layers of veneer wood alternating to create better support for both the top and lower arms. It’s actually the hinge part that we find mysterious because you don’t see any rivet or hinge from outside, but we believe there is—just hidden. On the base of the lamp, there is a basic port there for the cable that can be removed, so we’re assuming this lamp is rechargeable which is better as the cord can add to a cluttered look at times.

Nobuaki Sato Riffle LED Lamp Specs

The lamp’s name says a lot—Riffle LED Lamp– as it has a hinge that appears when you “riffle” or are shuffling things or flipping through the pages of a book. It’s not to be confused with the rifle gun, but then the form of the lamp could also well be that of a gun—the kind that kids improvise from imagination. You can choose how you want to see this LED lamp, but one thing we can be sure of—this is a minimalist lamp that won’t overwhelm the surrounding. Instead, it offers a simple and subtle elegance that can enhance any room or corner at home. The walnut veneer adds character and a rich depth to the desk or floor-standing lamp while being luxurious and creating a stylish and smooth finish to a supposedly very basic lighting solution.

Elisa Uberti’s ceramic handcrafted lamps are beautiful pieces of art

Elisa Uberti Édifice Horizon Cocon

Elisa Uberti is an artist known for her ceramic works. This ceramist knows art and design, which is very evident in her products.

Uberti has released a vast collection of stoneware lamps. Every item is handcrafted, so that makes every piece special. The lamps don’t really light up the whole room but provide just enough illumination for objects on your table or the surroundings. The designer has a passion for timeless objects and refined subjects, so she maintains the art of handcraft.

The designer’s stoneware lamps are stunning with their curves and shapes that are products of spontaneous gestures. Such are balanced with technical constraints so you can see the creativity of the lamps. The beauty of ceramics is something that has attracted people since the beginning of civilization. It’s not a lost art, but artists and creatives must consciously keep the craft. This craftsmanship is there to stay, but there is a call to keep the art alive.

In this day and age, when 3D printing is becoming more common and more affordable, handcrafted items may soon become rare. But, of course, those of us in the design world will not let that happen. That is why we support the efforts of artists like Elisa Uberti.

Elisa Uberti’s primary material is stoneware. It’s her favorite, enabling her to design and create unique lamps and sculptures. Without light, her lamps can stand alone as interesting sculptures that can drive conversations.

Elisa Uberti Horizon 4 Sidelamp

All the shapes and curves are comforting as they respond to manual gestures. Every lamp is unique and appears a challenge to recreate. Her inspirations vary from nature to space to architecture and even nomadism. Uberti’s art speaks poetry. Every piece is based on organic and multiple inspirations, so you can see the lamps appear natural and really handmade.

Here are some samples of Elisa Uberti’s art. She has designed dozens of ceramic lamps already. We hope more artists will be inspired by her passion, skills, and advocacies. She blends design and art in every work. It’s pronounced in her work that modernity and tradition can co-exist. As long as you have a constant drive for art, creativity, and life.

Elisa Uberti Edifice # 43

The artist refers to emotional shapes, including architecture, caves, refuges, and mini shelters. They can also be “protective dwellings for microorganisms”. Let’s take a look at some of her creations.

Elisa Uberti Baume 1

This is Baume #1. It is a handmade minimalistic white stoneware product that stands 50cm. The ceramist has described that she made it by hand with coiling techniques in her workshop in Roubaix, France. It’s created without using templates or molds and then baked in a ceramic oven. The res of her ceramic lamps are handcrafted and made with the same material and process. Some lamps have been painted though, to add more life and fun to the collection.

Cachalot portable lamp mimics the calm and peace of the whale

Lamps are not just something that can light up your home at night or when you sleep. It can be something to add to the ambience and decoration of your home or room. There are a lot of options out there right now for lamps, especially portable ones, that you can choose to match what theme you want to have in your space. If you’re into aquamarine life or specifically whales, this new design from Japanese lighting brand Ambientec may be for you.

Designer: Yoshiki Matsuyama

The Cachalot is the newest portable lamp for the Japanese brand, and the designer used the sperm whale as the inspiration for the design. The lamp has an abstract form that will remind you of the fluid, graceful movements of the whale, or at least that’s what it wants you to feel when you look at it. The shape is both familiar but will not immediately scream “whale” as it is a non-literal design that wants to remind you of these majestic creatures from the sea.

The designer says that he has always been intrigued by whales and other cetaceans as they represent both power and fluidity but also can be warm and gentle. When designing the lamp, he thought of the warm light spreading throughout the room and into the night, similar to how a whale quietly moves through the sea, “creating an atmosphere of peace and quiet.” It’s the thought that goes into designs like this that makes it stand out from other simple lamps.

The base of the sculpture-like portable lamp is made with die-cast zinc and a warm, copper finish. Meanwhile, the shade itself is made from durable acrylic. Inside is a tubular-shaped LED light that uses the Ambientec proprietary technology and gives off a warm glow when lighted. It comes in two basic colors: clear and dark gray. These wireless lamps can fit in your bookcase, dining table, bedside table, or wherever else you want to place them in.

The Cachalot lamp is portable, wireless, and rechargeable. Since it is inspired by marine life, Ambientec will be donating 1% of the annual sales to those organizations that are focused on marine environmental protection. They will be launching it at the Milan Design Week this coming June 7-12, 2022 and that’s when we’ll probably know how much it costs as well.

This multifunctional desk lamp doubles as book holder + magnetic clip-up board

How about sporting a cool desk lamp that performs double duty as a book/document holder and a magnetic pin-up board to keep all your important reminders within your peripheral view?

Organized desk is one thing all the professionals glued to their PCs will take with both hands. A practical accessory that minimizes the clutter in the most aesthetically pleasing way. Well, that sounds like a winning product in the making. The Holder Desk Lamp by Daejeon Ro is an accessory that caught my eye, and instantly appealed with its unique design.

Designer: Daejeon Ro

As I explored more renders of this design it started to grow on me – thanks to its useful functionality, sans any complicated design blueprints that seem infeasible to craft in real life. The idea of this desk lamp is to extend the usability of the good old desk lamp just beyond beaming soft light onto the desk’s work area. That’s because, you won’t be using the desk light at all times, and to make better use of the accessory, a book holder and a rotating magnetic pin-up board are incorporated into the product.

We all know, desk space is a luxury, and what you sport in this space is vital in a way to either enhance your productivity or make you feel anxious. The Holder Desk Lamp is one from the former camp with its mindful design. Compared to other desk lamps which take up space when not lighted up, this multi-purpose lighting accessory holds all your books, journals, and important files in an organized manner. The inside lining of the book holder section has a dotted texture to keep all the important stuff in place.

So, what more can you ask for in this design? Well, incorporating a wireless charger on the base could be another smart addition to enhance the multifunctional aspect. Another thing that could be toggled a bit is the positioning of the pin-up board which could be shifted to the side to avoid any obstruction of light falling on the workable area.

This modular table lamp tries to make you feel you’re in a bamboo forest

Your desk lighting doesn’t have to be mellow to keep you calm and relaxed, especially when you can have a lamp that easily reminds you of a peaceful forest.

Very few things immediately remind us of peaceful atmospheres. Many of them are related to nature, like trees, forests, rivers, lakes, fountains, and mountains. Having plants on your work table might not always be practical, and even a simple desk fountain near your computer could be unsafe. Almost everyone, however, will have some need for a desk lamp, and this concept for a modular lighting solution tries to have the same effect by resembling one of the most resilient plants in the world.

Designer: Sudhamshu Ds

Bamboo is well-known for how it can survive a storm without breaking, and it has become a symbol of resiliency and strength in the midst of stress. The larger bamboo plants have also adorned many homes, especially those with Oriental motifs, both as a reminder of that property as well as for practical purposes. Suffice it to say, bamboo has always been associated with calmness, coolness, and sometimes even mystical or spiritual thoughts.

Those might be the ideas and feelings you’ll encounter when seeing Moi, a modular desk lamp that takes its inspiration from bamboo. Rather than standing upright like bamboo, however, the idea is to have four tube lights resembling bamboos lying on top of each other like a mat. It might have been fine to leave it at that, but the design actually goes the extra mile to provide some level of customization.

Each “bamboo light” can be turned on or off independently of the rest with a simple twist, with no need for extraneous switches or buttons that don’t match the theme. Simply rotate the tube to make the light source face away from you, and that light turns off. There is a global knob that controls the light intensity for all four lamps, as well as a discrete power button that likes flush with the base, so it doesn’t distract from the bamboo motif.

The design suggests that the lights don’t actually work when disconnected from the base where they get their power from. The design is modular in the sense that it’s relatively easy to take the desk lamp apart and store or transfer it in a space-saving manner. Then again, it might be easier to simply pick up the entire assembled lamp if you’re just moving it across the room.

The Moi lamp is sadly not actually made of bamboo, which is a bit of a missed opportunity. The concept could have helped make the lamp sustainable in addition to being modular, giving you some peace of mind knowing that you’ve done your small part in not making the planet worse.

Noku X7.0 Smart Table Lamp looks like a glowing gem from afar

Let there be light! That’s what people always say when they have smart lights at home. Major light design can be complicated but for the home, it can be exciting to design lamps, especially those that are “intelligent”. They have become regular fixtures serving a purpose—to illuminate the surroundings. But lamps can also serve as decors and this is where aesthetics come into play.

The Noku X7.0 Smart Table Lamp comes with a contemporary design. It looks more like an art sculpture so it can be an important piece of conversation. Smart lighting has come a long way and we have reached the point designers can really play with it.

Designer: Noxu Design

The X7.0 Smart Table Lamp is something you’ll see far into the future. Its minimal style is made more interesting by the fact it rotates 360°. The lamp throws ambient lighting around, giving a levitating effect. From a distance, it appears to be a gem or a crystal. You know, the kind you see and need to collect and complete in video games.

Noku Design used black coated aluminum for the frame of the lamp plus its very own NoxuSmart LED light. Standing at 15-inches, the lamp can show 16+ million colors but obviously, you can only identify the basic colors. It offers different multicolor effects that you can control via the NoxuSmart App. If you want to increase or decrease the speed of the effects, you can also do that.

Noku’s X7.0 Smart Table Lamp is more of an accent light than a task lighting. It may not be ideal to use for work or studying as it appears to be more decorative. It will work well to make your priced painting or furniture piece to appear brighter but on its own, it can already stand out. The intelligent table lamp is also dimmable so you can set the intensity.

Your guests will be wondering how this lamp works. How can it stand and rotate at the same time? Is it levitating? What sorcery is this? You may not have time to answer all the questions so this is truly a conversation starter.

Light-Headed Dinosaur Wooden Desk Lamps

You know what my desk has been missing? A wooden dinosaur lamp. And, okay, something to shim the legs so they’re even and it doesn’t wobble when I type. I suppose you get what you pay for, and I found this desk by the curb of a neighbor’s home on trash day. But enough about my thriftiness. Created by HROOME and available on Amazon (affiliate link), these Dinosaur Lamps add a little prehistoric whimsy to any desk or table. Plus light. I mean they are lamps after all.

Available in two colors (‘black walnut’ and ‘wood’), the 6-watt LED lamps have three light settings (low, medium, high), and posable legs, arms, tail, and head. Am I going to buy two and pose them like they’re locked in battle? No, in my mind my dinosaur desk lamps are friends.

Pretty cute, right? I just added one to my Christmas list, and of all the things I might actually get, I feel like this stands the best chance. I mean even I’ll admit I haven’t really been Porsche 911 Turbo good this year.

Pastry Artist Creates Edible Desk Lamp: Luxo, Edible

Presumably envisioned in a eureka moment complete with a lightbulb going off over his head, incredibly talented pastry chef and chocolatier Amaury Guichon constructed a realistic desk lamp entirely out of edible ingredients. At first, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I saw those little springs and I thought ‘no way.’ But, as Amaury proves in the video, ‘yes way.’

The lamp base was constructed with a sesame streusel, black sesame Japanese roll cake, crunchy sesame tuile, a sesame praline, and a black sesame mousse. Sesame everything! The lamp’s upper armature was constructed from molded chocolate, and the light bulb was filled with crunchy caramelized sesame, which Amaury releases when he purposefully breaks the bulb in the video like a piñata.

Below: a chocolate spring being made before painting…

Obviously, this is the perfect cake for anyone who’s ever fantasized about taking a bite out of that hoppy little Pixar lamp, Luxo Jr. And who hasn’t, right? Come on, who hasn’t… right?
