This tiny IoT ticker-meter turns your tabletop into a miniature stock, forex, and crypto market!

Think of the TickrMeter as a real-life widget for your real-life desktop. Equipped with an e-ink screen that doesn’t demand too much energy while still providing easy-to-read high-contrast text, the TickrMeter displays any ticker-count by connecting to the internet. If you’re a stock-market watchdog, the ticker displays any stock value you assign to it. If you’re someone who works with international currencies, you can track daily fluctuations in international currency values against your own currency… and if you’re a crypto-enthusiast, the TickrMeter can be your own personal cryptocoin value-tracker, giving you updates in realtime!

The nifty little gadget sits ambiently on your desk, giving you a real-time reflection of financial data of your choice. Configurable through the TickrMeter app, you can track stocks, currencies, or even crypto-values with an impressively low 20ms latency, giving you the latest updates AS they happen. The app allows you to configure the data in a way that benefits you the most. You can either use a single TickrMeter to display a single value, or have the same display alternate between all your portfolios, sort of like a slideshow. The data displayed on the e-ink screen is accompanied by the date and time mentioned at the top, the percentage increase/decrease at the bottom, and even your profit/loss if you input the investment amount into the app. You can even choose your own time-frame, tracking growth by the day, week, month, or year, and a small backlit color-bar on the side turns either green or red, depending on a bull or bear moment.

The mini-device is a neat addition to any tabletop, bringing the thrill of a stock market to your desktop. Its relatively rectangular design can be magnetically stacked too, allowing you to build out an entire stock market on your desk, turning you into a Wolf of WFH Street. For added effect, the app lets you even program events/alerts (causing the backlit color-strip to turn blue) when a stock hits a certain price, and the TickrMeter comes with a toggleable bell sound that chimes like the bell on Wall Street!

While the device does run on a relatively low-energy e-ink screen, the TickrMeter needs to be constantly plugged in to work (the developers are working on a battery variant that unlocks as a funding goal). For now though, each TickrMeter comes with a USB cable and if you buy multiple units, you can daisy-chain them to connect all of them to a single power source. The tickers run directly off data from the internet too, so they connect directly to your WiFi for the fastest results, instead of sending and receiving data through your phone (which can cause a significant lag). The TickrMeter receives real-time professional-grade financial data directly from the best resources, including the NASDAQ, London Stock Exchange, New York Stock Exchange, and Toronto Stock Exchange. For now these nifty little widgets track Stocks, Forex, and Crypto, although future updates could allow them to gather and display any sort of information – like potentially YouTube views, Spotify plays, or Instagram/TikTok followers!

This zen alarm clock aids sleep, guides meditations and monitors air quality

Not everyone is a morning person, and I admit I am so far removed from that audience that I could actually make friends with a bunch of owls instead of being included in their group. I am sure many of us here, including me, want to wake up in the morning but either we don’t hear our alarms because we choose a soft tune or we awaken with rage because we chose a super-upbeat loud song. What we need is a more natural wake up call, something aligned with the body’s circadian rhythms which the Mudita Bell calming alarm clock knows how to do.

Most of us scroll through our social media apps before bed and the blue light exposure keeps our brain alert even after we keep the phone down. This calming alarm clock wants to replace the screen-scrolling so we can get rest according to our natural sleep cycles – a key in waking up rested and relaxed. It has an E-Ink screen which means you aren’t actually looking at a screen but at the ink that is programmed to move to create visuals, thus reducing your exposure to blue light. Limiting screen time helps us fall us asleep sooner and also into a deeper slumber which is crucial if you want to stop waking up grumpy or tired. The minimalist design of the clock has a soothing effect on your eyes which is important considering it is the last thing you see before bed and the first thing you see when you wake up.

It all starts with “Let me just check the time” or “I’ll just check if my alarm is on” and we descend into the notifications rabbit hole. With this Mudita alarm clock and the E-Ink screen, you can track time and set your alarms without being lured into scrolling through your apps. The alarm wakes you up with gentle acoustic sounds that don’t make you want to smash it. It also includes a sensor to track the air quality in your room and sometimes making small changes like adding a humidifier (based on what the air quality is) can make our sleeping patterns healthier. To make it a well-rounded health and wellness product, this alarm clock also has a meditation timer that comes pre-set with different meditation lengths and simple instructions to guide you through them. Now we really have no reason to wake up groggy so let’s make 2020 the year of the morning people!

The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus has a secondary e-ink display on its back, turning it into a Kindle when closed

Practically an iPhone moment for the laptop, the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus is a laptop, notepad, and e-book reader… all in one single device. Now the idea of two screens on one device has been floating around for long. The MacBook with its touch-bar is literally a dual-screen device, and the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 from 2018 flirted with the idea of turning the touchpad into a secondary screen… but the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus has pushed limits by making its secondary screen a decidedly large 10.8-inch e-ink display that sits on the lid of the laptop, facing outwards. Lenovo feels the dual-screen nature boosts the laptop’s productivity, and on paper, it definitely does. Let’s dig in.

The secondary screen sits on the top of the laptop, making it look almost like a really thick Kindle with massive bezels when closed. The e-ink display on the outside is touch-sensitive too, responding to fingers as well as a stylus that comes along with the device. The secondary display can be used for taking notes, interfacing with your laptop (even when it’s closed) by talking to Alexa, accessing your calendar, or doing various small tasks that makes little sense to open the laptop and boot it up to execute. When closed, the ThinkBook Plus still remains functional, letting you draw, write, and even read, thanks to the Windows Kindle app that lets you access your ebook library. Is it worth it, using a massive 13.3-inch laptop to read books on? That’s something the consumers will decide.

Other than its dual display, the ThinkBook Plus is a pretty decent laptop. It comes with a 13.3 inch IPS 1080p primary display, Dolby Vision support, a power button with a fingerprint reader built into it, a pretty sturdy aluminum body, and a price tag of $1199, which seems alright considering you’re getting a laptop and Kindle (with built-in Alexa) for the price of one device.

The Balance Watch bases itself off the duality of Yin and Yang

The Balance Watch bases itself off the duality of Yin and Yang

Visually split into two distinct parts, the Balance watch says all it needs to with its name, and the watch face design. Taking inspiration from the Yin-Yang, the Balance watch is all about showcasing a duality. A duality between colors, themes, and even technology, because aside from being half black and half white, the Balance Watch is also half-analog, half digital.

Looking like a normal mechanical watch, the Balance’s watch face is actually half-parts a dynamic e-ink display. The black surface serves as a display unit, through which the hands appear, and on top of which lies the white half-dial piece, adding contrast and drama to the watch face.

The hands come with their own interpretation of duality, with black and white hands (and dot indicators at the end of them) and tell the time against the watch’s dual-colored surface. The white part of the watch surface comes with a subdial, and to complement it, the e-ink display has a ‘subdial’ too that displays the date and time. The e-ink display even works in tandem with your phone when connected, giving you notifications when you’re getting a call or a message, and if you really want to spice the two-tone layout, you can even get the display to show off black and white patterns, giving you the duality of visual drama vs plain-ness!
