Canoa is a boat-shaped lounge chair that rocks you to the soothing waves of the sea

There are things and elements in nature that immediately make us comfortable and at ease, even just by thinking about them. A blowing breeze, the gentle pitter-patter of rain, and the rocking motion of waves are just some of the most popular examples that are easily replicated inside houses these days. Controlled fans can make you feel like a breeze is flowing through your room, while meditation music often includes sounds of rain or rivers. Recreating waves might be a bit harder, but a properly designed rocking chair could actually fit the bill. This lounge chair does, in fact, try to deliver that soothing experience, but its ties to the sea go beyond its rocking motion.

Designer: Guilherme Wentz

From the front, the chair looks pretty normal, albeit a little low and short. Walk around it just a bit, however, reveals its true form, one that is quite unique even among rocking chairs. The chair’s name clearly spells out its form and function. Canoa is Portuguese for “canoe,” and its resemblance to the water vessel is clear, even if it requires stretching the imagination a bit. The curved bottom of the chair resembles the hull of a boat, and its elongated body further reinforces that imagery. While most lounge chairs use warm tones and hues to convey feelings of comfort, Canoa employs a darker shade of blue with specks of white to represent its maritime inspiration.

The shape of the chair isn’t just for the sake of appearances, though. Low and close to the ground, the Canoa gives the feeling of almost lying down on a floater, gently swayed by rhythmic waves of the sea. Its height also gives it a bit of firmness and stability even as it rocks to and fro. It helps keep a person’s feet close to the ground as well, allowing them to come and go with ease. It would probably be easy to fall asleep on the chair with its rocking motions, which is the entire point of the design anyway.

Almost like a modern boat as well, the chair uses a mixture of aluminum and wood to form its skeleton. Foam and elastic straps provide comfortable support for your body, while aluminum and felt finishing on the bottom protect the fabric on the bottom from friction against the floor. That fabric, however, is no simple covering and gives something back to the sea that inspired this striking piece of furniture.

Beyond form and function, the Canoa also has a soul that calls out to the sea. Although made from steel and wool on the inside, the upholstery on the outside is made from WENTZ’s WE-KNIT mesh fabric. This particular material is made from 100% recycled PET bottles, particularly PET bottles that pollute our oceans. Every Canoa, then, isn’t just a beautiful and functional rocking chair but also a statement in support of sustainable practices and environmental awareness. In that sense, the lounge chair is truly born from the sea and does its fair share of saving it.

Skrolla is a striking lounge chair that curves and bends to offer a comfortable seat

It’s easy enough to downplay the importance of a well-designed chair. That is, until your back and posterior start to complain about the soreness in those areas. It might not be that difficult to design a chair with ergonomic curves and angles, but one that also looks good seems to be a bit more difficult to find. It almost gives the impression that ergonomics and aesthetics are mutually opposed, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. Granted, it might require a lot more creativity and ingenuity, but the end result will be so much worth the effort. A shining example of that is Skrolla, a beautiful wooden chair whose curves are more than just for show.

Designer: Dan Harden

Chairs with curved surfaces are nothing new, but you’d often find those forms in seats made of plastic or metal. These materials are easier to bend than wood, of course, but they also have less impact when it comes to portraying natural beauty. That novelty serves to augment Skrolla’s beauty, its smooth wooden surface and smooth curved form creating a visually appealing appearance that will sit well in almost any room. Plus, those curves were carefully designed to offer the best comfort for anyone sitting on this magnificent piece of furniture.

The seat, which resembles the eponymous paper scroll, isn’t carved but made from 13 layers of plywood veneer, joined and curved using a novel patented process. The wide arms provide ample room for people to support their bodies on, and the seat reclines at what is considered to be the most comfortable lounging angle. It’s so comfortable that the designer is confident you won’t even need cushions for it.

The assembly of the other parts is just as intriguing as the seat and backrest themselves. The legs, for example, go through the bottom of the scroll to the underside of the arm, creating a stable hold that requires no bracing or screws. The actual legs have larger diameters, so they’re able to hold the entire weight of the chair without additional support. The curved backrest is mortised to the back legs, again removing the need for screws or metal parts.

That practically means that the lounge chair has only six parts, all of them made from wood. The simplicity of its construction contrasts with the sophistication of its form, creating a kind of harmony that you’ll rarely find even in the prettiest of lounge chairs. It also makes the production process a bit simpler, even if the construction of the curved wood itself is just as nontrivial as its appearance.

What’s important is that Skrolla is designed to be comfortable, both in terms of ergonomics as well as visual appearance. It makes its presence in any room immediately known without being gaudy, using instead its minimalist yet sophisticated design to attract attention. It is a prime example of a design that goes beyond the limitation of the material to deliver something that is both innovative yet also familiar, something beautiful and comfortable just as a lounge chair should be.

Origin is like a sci-fi sculpture you can actually lounge on

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection

They say “two heads are better than one,” and we believe in this saying if the subject is the design art duo Batten and Kamp. Currently based in Hong Kong, New Zealand-born Alexandra Batten and Daniel Kamp have been working on one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that sell and are being acquired by galleries and clients from all over the world. Batten and Kamp is a creative partnership between two talented designers whose works are exhibited at galleries in New York, Shanghai, Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, Copenhagen, and Hong Kong. Their projects are all functional sculptures that many creatives and collectors patronize for their brilliance, allure, and unique charm. The two are in a successful creative partnership that works by launching fascinating, rare, and attractive objects like this well-designed lounge chair.

Designers: Alexandra Batten and Daniel Kamp

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 8

Alexandra Batten and Daniel Kamp’s latest collection is a limited edition release of common objects we use every day—things you can find at home like lights, a table, sculptures, and lounge chairs. Elsewhere is a new collection of furniture items that appear more like sculptures but still function as they are supposed to. One remarkable piece we are focusing on is the Origin lounge chair that features a jet black plywood resting on a giant mass of stone, offering sturdy support, height, and comfort.

Aside from the bent plywood, the Origin lounge chair also uses granite, acrylic, and stainless steel fastenings. This thing measures 1400mm x 600mm x 900mm (LWH), and it is one furniture piece you would want to put on your patio or just about anywhere you want to lounge, chill, or relax. If you don’t think a lounge chair like this is that important, then maybe it’s time you understand what the words rest and relaxation really mean.

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 5

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 6

The whole collection by Batten and Kamp consists of seven pieces, including a table, sculptures, and lights. The Origin lounge chair is actually just one of the two chairs as there is also the transparent version called the Elsewhere Acrylic Chaise. Like the Origin, the other piece is a product of creativity, combining beautiful shapes naturally formed, then constructed from whatever fragments of earth are available. The effect is minimalist but with a hint of surrealism that makes every piece unique, mysterious, and interesting.

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 7

The design duo usually utilizes different materials that are almost eclectic that may not suit the tastes of some people. But what we have seen so far is pretty dramatic with the choice and combination of materials from bent plywood to acrylic to cast aluminum to boulders, neon, silk, and titanium. These are minimal materials, yet when mixed create pieces that are appealing, majestic, and sometimes other-worldly.

Batten and Kamp imagines the Origin lounge chair as something you’d be comfortably lying on while on a “windswept coastline of New Zealand staring out into space”. Meanwhile, the transparent version, Elswhere, is imagined on a “rocky surface of another planet looking longingly back at earth.” It doesn’t matter what you get between the two versions because they are both stunning pieces and are good enough to be conversation starters.

Origin Lounge Chair Elsewhere Collection 4

Batten and Kamp have been creating exquisite art pieces and functional sculptures using different materials. They have already shared and showcased their works at top galleries worldwide—from Hong Kong to Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Copenhagen, Paris, and New York. We highly doubt the Elsewhere collection will be the last of the two. They’ve just started making a mark in the furniture design industry, and we know they have a bright future ahead.

Walden Furniture Series unveils new design classics you can shop for the home

YUUE Design Studio Walden Series

Fixing up a new house or an apartment can be really fun and, at the same time, exhausting. However, it can be a delightful experience if you know exactly what to do and where to buy stuff. Shopping should be a joy and not a chore, but it can only happen if you have already identified your needs and wants and the aesthetics and style that work for you.

Furniture shopping is always a good idea, but one needs to know what to buy so no time is wasted. One’s taste may change depending on needs and location, and even season in life, so it is essential that important factors are considered. Of course, there is the budget you can spend, the space where the pieces will be fixed, the features of the furniture items, durability and comfort, plus the overall look.

Designer: Weng Xinyu (YUUE Design Studio)

Walden Side Table

Walden Furniture Series

The trend for 2022 is curved furniture with soft lines; that is why you will notice that many furniture makers’ designs and items come with curves and soft arcs. The use of simple and natural materials like wood is also more prevalent, especially since there is a global campaign to go sustainable. The YUUE Design Studio team aims to develop affordable alternatives to iconic designs and expensive pieces. With the intention to craft new design classics in the modern age, designer Weng Xinyu decided to utilize solid wood. This is also so the elements can easily adapt to the design requirements and needs of the consumers.

The Walden Series of furniture pieces is a product of the designer’s special journey in life and career. Weng Xinyu is honest enough to say his journey has been lonely, coming with lots of contemplations, gains, and pains, but we can see the beauty that resulted from his different experiences. The new furniture series includes three mainly useful items: a Side Table, a Floor Lamp, and a Lounge Chair.

Walden Side Table Series

The Walden furniture pieces all present modern minimalism and each product shows elegance and simplicity, starting with the side table. The handmade wood table comes with precisely crafted parts offering a mechanical fit. There is a round tabletop that is the same size as the base ring, but the base is slightly thicker for added support and stability. The combination of the two offers visual balance while a wooden stick joins the two sliding parts. Another advantage of this design is that it can be combined with other pieces. Storage is also a plus because it can be slid easily under the bed or a sofa.

Walden Lounge Chair Details Concept

The Lounge Chair is yet another 3D puzzle-like furniture piece you can display and use at home. It uses simple materials such as leather sheets and wooden boards, and the flatpack design makes it easy to assemble and disassemble. There is some sort of geometry interplay here, as seen in the combination of the lines and curves.

Lounge Chair

The wooden boards are designed to be inserted into each other while still allowing space to contain a human body. The designer made sure there was a clever distribution of weight and pressure so the boards won’t be stressed. Check out the smoothened edges of the wood that offer comfort, especially on parts touched by the body.

YUUE Design Studio Floor Lamp

Last is the Floor Lamp as another minimalistic item ideal for a minimalist home— coming with a three-dimensional look– combining a surface, line, and a dot. This functional floor lamp features a rotatable lamp holder that is also helped by magnets so you know it is sturdy enough. It can be used as both a reading lamp or an upright as it can illuminate an object or a surrounding. At the base, there are three slots where you can fix the pole when you want to adjust the height.

Star Lounger Chair wants to give you a warm embrace and a comfortable seat

Troy Smith Studio Star Lounger Details

The Star Lounger looks like something that wants to give you a warm hug. The star-shaped chair will probably remind you of Patrick Star from the Spongebob cartoon series. The lounge chair appears comfortable enough to put you in a cozy embrace.

On its own, the Star Lounger can stand as an art piece or a decor. It’s like a sculpture you want to show off, serving an important function. It’s a chair that can be perfect for lobbies and rooms where you want to chill and relax.

Designer: Troy Smith

Troy Smith Studio Star Lounger Chair

Troy Smith Studio Star Lounger Chair Marble

The Start Lounger is a star alright but can shine brighter wherever you decide to place it. Each piece is crafted from the best materials like stretch velvet fabric and brass caps. The end result is a luxurious lounge chair that is plush and comes with premium finishes.

The upholstered lounge chair is beautiful with its craftsmanship, design, and art. Designer Troy Smith took inspiration from a star and decided to use stretch velvet to achieve an elegant and beautiful furniture piece. As a result, the Star Lounger delivers meticulous craftsmanship that is hard to come by these days.

This conceptual piece of furniture is unique. The brass and stretch velvet combination delivers a feeling of luxury while still being comfortable. The Canadian designer has spent time being creative and researching and planning to design and create the chair. It breaks the mold for a lounger chair and even goes beyond the desire to produce a sculptural work of art.

The Star Lounger definitely combines beautiful form and function. There isn’t much innovation, but the design alone will make you stop and stare and even sit on the lounge chair. It has a bit of humor as it appears wanting to want you to sit on the chair and be embraced. It’s actually more of a giant starfish that wants to hug you or wants you to sit on his lap.

This Star Lounger is handmade by skilled artisans. It features a sturdy hardwood interior frame, high-density foam, brass, and velvet—so you can say it’s a bit eclectic. The upholstery is solid, so we are guaranteed of a well-made furniture piece. This chair stands out with the detailed finishes, including the cast brass legs and caps.

Troy Smith usually delivers a hands-on approach starting with design and then production. This intimacy with every creation makes every piece like the Star Lounger very special. We think it is because it doesn’t just serve as a regular lounge chair. Instead, it makes you smile and gives you comfort whenever you need it.

This unconventional seating device challenges the notion of what a chair should look like

Close your eyes and think of a chair. Chances are you thought of something with four legs and a backrest, made from wood or plastic. Or perhaps your mind thought of something less unconventional but just as common – a chair with a five-spoked base with caster wheels – the kind found in offices. THe Haragana Lounge Chair was made as an antithesis to those archetypes. Its metal outline, to any astute observer, resembles an armchair, however, the Haragana doesn’t have any cushions or upholstery. Instead, its seating area is split into 6 cork discs spread across the base and the backrest, made from bent steel tubing. Visually, the Haragana aims at challenging the stereotype of a chair by being radically different, but functionally, it still is comfortable to sit on, with the cork discs providing just the right amount of softness and support. All in all, the chair also fulfills yet another purpose – that of evoking a sense of curiosity, and always inviting you to try and sit on it!

Designer: Tobias Kappeler

The chair’s unusual design actually works in its favor because it’s hard to ignore. Unlike most seating devices with a base and a backrest, Haragana comes with 6 oddly shaped and angled panels made of cork. Look at them and the mind instantly begins struggling with two simultaneous thoughts – “this chair doesn’t look comfortable” and “I need to sit on it to find out”. That’s precisely how the chair hooks you in, invites you to interact with it, and probably question your preconceived notions of what a chair should look and feel like.

I have no doubt that the Haragana is an oddly satisfying piece of furniture to park your derriere on. It’s quirky and vibrant – two aspects that make it eye-catching and also the kind of chair you’d want to share on social media (that’s a pretty big part of design now, I hear). Moreover, it’s also low-set, and allows people to sit for longer without having their legs dangling like they would on normal chairs or high barstools.

The Haragana Lounge Chair is a Bronze Winner of the A’ Design Award for the year 2022.

ANYWAYS Concept Furniture can transform into a lounge chair, table, and storage

ANYWAYS Multipurpose Furniture

Multipurpose furniture pieces are perfect for small and compact homes. There is a demand for such items because of limited space, as well as, the need to keep clutter at bay.

When a furniture item is not frequently used, it could be deemed a waste, but that doesn’t have to happen. Multi-function products are essential, especially these days when people are trying to keep things simple. ANYWAYS is a solution for people who live in small spaces yet want to have the full benefits of having different furniture pieces.

Designer:
Kshitij Gangurde

ANYWAYS Furniture

The ANYWAYS concept furniture can work as a lounge chair for relaxing. Flip it and then it can work as a dining or work table. The space underneath can then be used for storage as a shelf where you can put some books or maybe pillows or a blanket. You can use the space in either mode, depending on your need.

The furniture concept shows us one structure can be used for different purposes. It can be a chair or a table, but you can mistake it for a sculpture on its own. It can also be another conversation starter because of the unique design.

ANYWAYS Multipurpose Furniture Piece

ANYWAYS Furniture Sketch

ANYWAYS appear to be wooden, but we won’t be surprised if versions with different materials like plastic or concrete will be introduced. The concrete version may be challenging to flip because of the possible weight. A plastic version may be lighter, but durability may be compromised. At the moment, we believe wood is the best material to use.

ANYWAYS Chair to Table

ANYWAYS can be a table, shelf space, and a relaxing chair in one. The table mode may be low, but it’s the kind usually seen in Korean or Japanese homes. The shelf space is just enough for you to store things you want to reach easily.

The lounge chair mode doesn’t appear to be very comfortable because there is no foam used anywhere. We just know you can be free to lay down here to relax or take a nap. You can position it in your living room and not worry about it blending with your interior, as it can match most homes with its minimalist look. The multipurpose furniture can be used in any way you want but is limited to home functions only. Perhaps kids can use it as a play gym where their imagination can go wild.

ANYWAYS Inspiration

The designer of this concept is an Industrial Design student from Australia. Kshitij Gangurde’s design principle is to develop possible solutions to problems with an innovative form and design. He usually starts his process by sketching and then generating a concept design. ANYWAYS was an idea introduced in 2020, back when people were forced into lockdown due to the pandemic. We see this as more than just a product of boredom but out of the need to improve the home.

A 3D Printed central knot is the hinge that keeps the components of this wooden lounge chair together!

Konvergence is an atypical lounge chair that hinges on a 3D-printed central connecting knot that brings each component of the chair together, from its eight wooden slats to its fabric seat rest.

When it comes to chairs, exciting, innovative designs are few and far between. Incorporating technology into the construction of chairs often stretches the creative bounds of the design process. Technology like 3D printing helps create chairs that we haven’t seen before, reminding us of the endless potential in furniture making and interior design.

Designing their own interpretation of the classic lounge chair called Konvergence, Paris-based designer and maker, Emmanuel Hugnot turned to 3D printing to produce a central knot that eight wooden slats protrude from to define and support the shape of a fully-formed chair.

The central knot of Konvergence resembles the shape of a ball-and-socket connector piece from LEGO kits. Keeping a total of eight end sockets, the central knot functions as the chair’s cornerstone, providing the bridge for all of Konvergence’s additional components to connect. Taking to common beech to produce the eight wooden slats, Hugnot went with the brightly textured timber for its rigidity and current abundancy in Europe’s forests. Once connected to the central knot, the wooden slats form the skeletal frame of Konvergence, leaving space for blankets of fabric to cover the slats to follow Konvergence through to its final form.

Designed so that the lounge chair could be dismantled just as quickly as its produced for easy assembly and portability, Hugnot describes the inspiration behind Kovergence in their own words, “In an ecological will, ‘Konvergence’ is intended for small series to compete with heavy industry in terms of resource consumption and price. Thanks to its shape the chair is easy to disassemble for better transport or storage.”

Inspired by the chairs of our childhood, this modern lounge chair is a rattan-based derivation of the iconic Eames chair!

Inspired by the chairs of their childhood, Cuong Nguyen designed RU, a rattan cushioned lounge chair that weaves together nostalgic and modern elements to bring us back to the simple times of our own childhood all in the comfort of our living rooms today.

Remember the chair from childhood that everyone called dibs on? Whether it was the honey walnut wood rocking chair or the unmatched leather power recliner, the chairs from our childhood will forever bring on a feeling of comfort. What I’d give to sink back into my childhood family room’s chenille tweed corner sofa with a can of soda in one hand and the TV remote in the other. Industrial designer Cuong Nguyen took to the interior design of their own childhood for inspiration in visualizing RU, a rattan cushioned lounge chair that finds modern comfort in its nostalgic design.

Described by Nguyen as, “A bit of embracing crib, a bit of the curve of dragonfly wings, interpreted by rattan,” the arms and lower back of RU feature webbed rattan weaving to support the cushion’s taut upholstery fabric. Muted in freckled amber orange, RU is paired with an ottoman that can either tuck beneath the chair’s cushion, work as a footrest, or become an additional seat.

Both the lounge chair and ottoman are propped atop a cushioned base to embrace the comfort that RU was designed to provide. Named after the Vietnamese word for ‘lullaby,’ Nguyen conceptualized RU to be made up of materials from their childhood, namely rattan and what appears to be a tightly woven linen fabric.

While the wide size and the gradual slope of RU’s backrest hearken back to the 1990s when lounge chairs were all the rage and designed to swaddle you whole, Nguyen incorporated modern elements like slim, yet plush cushions and uniform upholstery to bring RU into the 21st century. All of these design features enhance RU’s comfort, but the rattan touches are the sure showstopper.

Noting his inspiration behind choosing rattan as a building material, Nguyen describes, “To me, lines and materials should be the storytellers in product design. Therefore, when you lie down on this chair, I hope that sweet childhood memories will come back to you and lull your mind to peace.”

Designer: Cuong Nguyen

Rattan armrests and backing support RU’s slim upholstered cushion.

The gradual slope of RU’s backrest provides plenty of space for lounging, a nice ’90s touch.

While the rattan armrest and expansive backrest are design elements rooted in the ’90s, the slim cushion and uniform upholstery bring the RU lounge chair into the modern era.

This Styrofoam chair is designed to replace your trusty lounger by adapting to your body shape over time!

Like a good pair of jeans, the Tamable Chair only becomes more comfortable with wear-and-tear.

Styrofoam is like an improvised shapeshifter. It’s used for anything from packing material to insulation to play products. Composed of 98% air, styrofoam is well known for its shock-absorbent properties, making it the ideal choice for packing material. The rest of styrofoam is made up of closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam (XPS), a type of dense craft building material that gives styrofoam its rigid appearance and stiff impression. The buoyant nature of styrofoam and its dense, rigid makeup inspired Seoul-based Fountain Studio to design the Tamable Chair, an ergonomic, conceptual chair entirely made from styrofoam.

The Tamable Chair maintains the shape of a traditional lounge chair for optimal comfort. Over time, the Tamable Chair’s surface morphs to different seated positions and becomes more comfortable with continued use. Styrofoam is composed of 98% air, making it the ideal packing material. Styrofoam tends to contort and warp when pressure is applied to its surface.

Even as kids, poking at sheets of styrofoam taught us that the depressions our fingerprints make don’t rise. Fountain studio used that insight when developing the Tamable Chair to allow the styrofoam surface to adapt to different body shapes and seated positions.

Fountain Studio set out to create a lounge chair that naturally morphs its outermost surface to adapt to different seated positions. Finding the ideal building material, Fountain Studio’s Tamable Chair is made from styrofoam for its tendency to contort and bend when pressure is applied, giving the chair an adaptable and lightweight comfort that gets better with use.

Fountain Studio considered other buoyant building materials before settling on styrofoam. The Tamable Chair is entirely made from expandable polystyrene that was put through a CNC milling machine to give the block of styrofoam some stylistic ridges and a fully-formed chair shape. Like a good pair of jeans, the Tamable Chair only becomes more comfortable with wear-and-tear.

CNC milling techniques were used to give Tamable Chair stylistic ridges and a unique shape. The Tamable Chair morphs its surface and overall shape with each new seated position—the ridges level out to become a squeaky, flattened surface more similar to that of traditional chairs.

Designer: Fountain Studio

When sitting on Tamable Chair, the chair’s seat forms a depression that remains even after you leave the chair.

Over time, the ridges level out and form a squeaky flattened surface.

The more one sits in the Tamable Chair, the more familiar it becomes, passing from rigid indentations to a smooth surface.
