Monos: The Clean, Pristine, Sophisticated “Apple of Suitcases”

There’s a distinct line between ‘premium’ and ‘affordable’ that crowdfunding platforms are blurring. Design and innovation have become democratized enough so that good design or a quality product doesn’t necessarily mean expensive, luxurious, or premium anymore.

Whether it’s a fine timepiece (we’ve seen so many of them in the past two years), or titanium stationery designed to last a lifetime, or even luggage that’s designed from the ground up, made to look spectacular and provide a positive user experience, crowdfunding has shown that you don’t need expensive brands to own beautiful products.

Monos furthers the case that good design can be easily accessible without brand markups or ‘luxury taxes’. Designed and developed to look and feel incredible, the Monos bags focuses purely on quality and ease of use, with a design that reflects the strength and minimalism that one would associate with brands like Rimowa (with a sense of perfectionism that one could say is almost Apple-esque), with carefully selected color palettes, materials, and design details to truly make the bag look top-notch.

Monos comes in three sizes. Two cabin-friendly variants (a regular and a plus) with enough space for as much as a 7-day getaway, and a check-in version that’s big enough to store a week’s worth of luggage. Each hard-case bag is made from impact-resistant polycarbonate and comes with a high-grade aluminum telescopic handles that slide into the bag’s form. The bag comes with sleek YKK zippers with Italian vegetable-tanned Vacchetta leather trims at the end and a TSA-approved lock, to give the bag a design that looks uplifting and a quality/performance to match. Even the interiors come lined with a soft, waterproof, anti-microbial fabric lining to keep your clothes looking, smelling, and feeling fresh on the inside, while the minimal, polycarbonate body gives you a carrying case that grabs eyes with a smart, sophisticated design on the outside!

DESIGN

“We started by slowing down to mindfully look around us. We studied the ripples in water when it rained. We observed the color gradations in the sky when the sun rose and set each day. And in all these moments, we found a common visual rhythm. We distilled and refined this rhythm into the minimalist, asymmetric progression of lines that would become our luggage’s signature design,” Hubert Chan, designer of Monos told Yanko Design.

“For us, the lines signify change, in all its forms. Travel – and life – changes us. We embrace the fact that nothing can stay the same forever. Our studio’s name (Monos), after all, comes from the Japanese concept of mono no aware – the profound appreciation of the impermanent,” said the design studio.

Light and Unbreakable

Weighing in at only 6.9 lb, 7.1 lb, and 10 lb, the Monos Carry-On, Carry-On Plus, and Check-In are exceptionally light. They built their cases with ultra-light, aerospace-grade polycarbonate, and stripped out all the unneeded junk.

Texturized and powder-coated, their matte finish shell is scratch-resistant. The German-made Makrolon polycarbonate in their luggage isn’t just harder and stronger than your average suitcase’s ABS plastic – it’s nearly impossible to break and it easily bounces back into its original shape.

monos_premium_minimalist_luggage_06

A Superior Handle

Instead of cheap cast zinc resulting in those flimsy, wobbly handles, Monos used only high-grade aluminum for their tubes. And rather than the usual parallel configuration, they custom-designed the entire assembly to set their telescoping tube at opposing 45 degree angles, which greatly reduces lateral motion and makes the whole handle more solid and sturdy.

As for the handle release button, rather than maneuvering your thumb on the top of the handle where the button is usually found, they found that it actually feels better to squeeze from the bottom. They re-engineered the button and hid it underneath, resulting in a clean, uncluttered handle that’s also more natural to use.

Whisper-quiet Hinomoto Lisof Silent Run 360 Degree Wheels

At a mere 54 decibels, these Silent Run wheels would make a ninja envious. Other Hinomoto wheels are already quiet, but this is a grade above.

Color-coordinated YKK Reverse Zippers

Zippers look better with their teeth hidden. Every Monos suitcase sports color-coordinated YKK reverse coil zippers, chosen for their sleek look and unequalled reliability.

monos_premium_minimalist_luggage_09

Italian Vegetable-tanned Leather Detailing

They complemented the sleek look of the zipper and shell with premium Italian Vacchetta leather, and stitched detailing. And they color-coordinated that too.

Interior

Their interior lining and the included laundry and shoe bags all use a soft, waterproof, and anti-microbial fabric with subtle pattern detailing. The sized pockets in their side flap keep your small items together and free to be laid on top of, or between your clothes. Ballistic nylon compression straps keep your clothes compact, while being more forgiving of hard items than bulky compression pads.

Transparent suitcases are finally going mainstream!

90_points_transparent_suitcase_1

We covered the Rimowa X Off White transparent suitcase earlier this year, exploring the pros (and maybe a few cons) of a suitcase that’s absolutely see-through. The idea of covering the Xiaomi 90 Points transparent suitcase (which honestly is quite a rip-off) is to address an aspect other than product design. It’s to address the mainstream-ification of this design, and how Xiaomi, a trend-setter in the east, could help make this trend more popular and accessible to the world.

Designed by 90 Points, a Xiaomi sub-brand, the suitcase comes with a complete transparent outer body molded in PolyCarbonate. With 360° wheels and a TSA lock, the suitcase has the makings of a nice, mid-range carry case. With a price of 599RMB ($86), the 90 Points suitcase (available exclusively on TMall) has a large competitive advantage over Rimowa’s $1,200 transparent suitcase, which makes a great ‘case’ for it among the masses, who’ll definitely be motivated to buy the unique looking piece of luggage. A transparent suitcase, although it really doesn’t scream privacy, is most certainly a much more uniquely visible item. Its transparent nature allows your belongings to be visible from the outside, making different from each and every suitcase, primarily because its belongings are different. It also lets you know if you’ve packed everything without having to open the case and rummage through your things!

A Creative’s Take on Redesigning Modern Luggage

If a product doesn’t satisfy a consumer’s needs, the consumer doesn’t buy the product again. If a product doesn’t satisfy a designer’s needs, the designer takes it as a challenge to redesign the product to be the best version of itself. Tired of how flawed his luggage was, Dr. Ken Nah set out to redesign the travel necessities to a limit where nothing could defeat them. Bad weather, bad handling, bad circumstances, there’s no defeating the SHAPL, because it was designed to be lightweight yet spacious, waterproof, incredibly durable, come with top-notch security measures, proximity tracking, and customizability that makes the luggage your be-all-end-all travel pick.

Available in three sizes, the SHAPL comes in a backpack format and two sizes of suitcases. The backpack packs a spacious design with a dedicated laptop compartment (which can hold even 17″ laptops) and roomy interiors with enough segregation to pack all your belongings in their own special areas for easy access (including a special power-bank pocket that lets you plug your phone directly into the bank stashed in your backpack). For your valuables, the backpack comes with its own anti-theft compartment that’s virtually impossible to access by others when you’re wearing the backpack. The SHAPL backpack features a durable, water-resistant outer fabric and employs water-resistant zippers to keep your electronics and belongings safe from inclement weather. A special luggage strap allows you to fasten the backpack to your wheel-in luggage, while a Bluetooth tracker lets you know if your bag ever leaves the tracking radius of your smartphone.

If the SHAPL backpack was built to provide the perfect cabin-baggage experience, its larger suitcases make for perhaps the most streamlined experience in check-in luggage design. Made from incredibly tough polycarbonate, the SHAPL is virtually indestructible and features a handle that’s practically unbreakable and wheels designed by Hinomoto, known for their ability to withstand pretty much any sort of stress. Armed with double-coil zippers that are tough to break into, the SHAPL’s larger bags also pack a TSA lock and Bluetooth tracking to make sure that your bag’s contents are safe and sound. What’s more, the bag also comes with its own set of alphanumeric stickers that let you personalize your luggage to make it not only functionally, but also visually stand out from the rest.

Literally crossing every pain-point of conventional luggage off its list, the SHAPL isn’t just a functionally superior luggage set. With its tracking abilities and rather innovative customization package, it’s YOUR functionally superior luggage that was designed with a user experience that makes it a blind pick for any sort of traveling you have in mind. Beware, never cross a designer!

The ST3 turns the world into your stage

st3_1

Reducing tonnes of equipment to just one travel-suitcase, the ST3 is a performer’s best friend. The innovative design packs a built-in amplifier, stage, microphone and stand. Perfect for impromptu performances, jam-sessions, and street performers, the ST3 and self-confidence is pretty much all you’ll need.

The stage, as it is, wraps around a central column that houses the wheels, handle, and a microphone stand. The stage itself opens into a flat platform big enough for even two people. Screw the microphone stand in, and you’re ready to perform. The stage comes with speakers powered by an inbuilt amplifier, and even has ambient lighting to add some drama to the performance. When done, fold the stage back down to its suitcase-worthy size, collect your compliments (tips too, maybe), and make a grand exit!

Transparent Suitcases – Yay or Nay?

rimowa_x_1

The Rimowa X Off-White Transparent Carry-On Case has some rather obvious pros and cons. It’s just a question of which of them outweighs the other, and that’s completely subjective.

Made from transparent yet extremely resilient and impact resistant PolyCarbonate, the carry-on suitcase is completely see-through, although the ribbing on the surface to give it structural integrity obscures one’s direct view of the insides of the suitcase. With accented black handles, wheels, and labeling on the handle and locks, the Rimowa and Off-White collaborative suitcase gets a distinct contrast that gives it a much-needed pop.

Polycarbonate isn’t completely transparent, and the suitcase’s insides get a slightly frosty/cloudy appearance, but the contents within aren’t hidden from one’s view. While most people wouldn’t be comfortable with carrying a suitcase that flaunts the items inside, it may appeal to a few who have nothing to hide and are looking for a suitcase that’s distinctly different, and can be spotted from afar on the conveyor belt at the airport arrival hall. There’s no way anyone’s mistaking this suitcase for theirs! Plus, here’s a hidden psychology tip: Transparent items are usually perceived as fragile/breakable, so the people handling your luggage will probably subconsciously take extra good care of it!

Luggage With a Secret Stash

mango_01

Studio Mango and Princess Traveller are the most recent recipients of a Red Dot Design Award for their Safety luggage collection that offers some simple yet innovative solutions to give travelers peace of mind. The inspiration came from one of the designer’s own experiences in an airport when he witnessed a mom of 2 with her arms full struggle to pick up documents she dropped while holding her children. As he assisted her in gathering the belongings, he thought “there’s got to be a design solution for this!” and voila! Here it is!

The all new carry-on features a hidden compartment for storing their passport, travel tickets and other important travel documents. Not just a deterrent for thieves, it’s also a clever addition that makes accessing these necessities quick, easy and convenient. Incorporated neatly into the handle, the compartment is only revealed when the user pulls it out after the handle is extended. Great for paperwork. Even better for sneaking on snacks!

Suitcase that follows you like a pet

puppy1_01

The World’s first self-balance auto-follow suitcase. Yup, that’s right, and I’ll say it again so that it sinks in – the World’s first self-balance auto-follow suitcase. Developed by 90FUN, this nifty two-wheeler also knows as ‘Puppy1′, uses the same technology implemented by Segway. While also being accompanied by patented technology, Puppy1 provides the user with a hands-free, automatic, convenient luggage buddy.

Along with its custom auto-following chip and the precise positioning system, it can either follow you anywhere or be summoned by easily setting up the auto-following mode through remote control. Accompanied by all this fancy tech is the fingerprint scanner located on the front of the compact suitcase. From every angle, this suitcase is quite simply the most gorgeous travel case I’ve ever set my eyes upon. The wheels and front compartment are highlighted with a complimenting blue LED hue, while the case itself is accented with various material patterns which make this product really pop.

90FUN is a brand founded on the mission to build and share a light & premium travel spirit. Inspired by the contemporary way of living, we aim to promote a lifestyle full of vigor, quality, and beauty. As an integral part of the Mi Ecosystem, 90FUN is without a doubt the most exciting member of the ecosystem to hit US shores and will be doing so at CES this year. Be sure to check it!

These Suitcase Covers Ensure Nobody Will Take Your Luggage by Mistake

We’ve all seen the “Many Bags Look Alike” signs at the airport luggage carousel. You could tie a colorful ribbon around your nondescript suitcase, but chances are somebody else on your flight had the same idea. What you need is a way to make sure that NOBODY could mistake your luggage for theirs. These bag covers should do the trick just fine.

UK gift shop Firebox is selling these awesome Head Case wraps, which can be printed with a big image of your ugly mug, ensuring nobody messes with your bags. Simply upload a photo of your face, and they’ll screenprint your face onto these stretchy polyester Spandex covers, which you can slip over your roller bags.

They come in three sizes to fit a wide variety of luggage, with prices ranging from $26 to $39(USD). While they’re designed to be printed with your face, I see no reason why you couldn’t upload an image of just about any image you wanted – I’m thinking about ordering a bag with the face of Curly Howard from the Three Stooges on it.
