Quanta Vici jackets and gloves let you choose how warm you want to be

You no longer have to be stuck between hot and cold with this range of fashionable smart thermal clothing that lets you pick your preferred toasty temperature.

You might debate the actual causes, but it’s hard to argue that the weather has been pretty irregular and out of sync in the past years. Seasons extend beyond their normal dates, and temperatures can go to extremes. For those that have to deal with cold weather, be it by force or by recreational choice, the selection of clothing to keep them from freezing to death is wide but shallow. There isn’t much flexibility in how you are able to keep warm, and you’ll mostly have to either pile up more layers or take them off, depending on how you feel. We are living in a smart, tech-centric world, however, so there’s little reason why our winter clothes have to stay that way. Thankfully, someone did finally put two and two together to create a line of thermal clothing that isn’t just smart but also guilt-free.

Winter wear is mostly designed to trap your own body heat to keep you warm, and that’s pretty much it. If the cold becomes too much to bear, all you can do is wear more layers to the point that you become an immovable pin cushion. You can’t really go anywhere in between, much less opt for a slightly “chill” temperature if you’re the type that likes a tiny bit of cold. Heaters and thermostats can do that for rooms and cars, but not for clothing, at least until now.

Quanta Vici’s new thermal clothing lineup brings that freedom and flexibility to thermal jackets, vests, and gloves. You can actually select on your smartphone how warm you want to feel or how cold you want to be. Better yet, the built-in thermostat from the “Smart” range can automatically do that for you, detecting the temperature inside the clothing in order to maintain that perfect level that you chose.

Although these features may sound geeky, Quanta Vici’s apparel looks anything but. In fact, the jackets and especially the gloves look completely fashionable, something that wouldn’t look out of place on a catwalk. The gloves, in particular, make use of animal-free vegan-friendly leather, so you don’t have to feel guilty about wearing such a luxurious-looking accessory. It’s also friendly to your phone’s touch screen, so you don’t have to worry about freezing your finger off just to use your device.

Both the slim jacket and the vest, which come in different styles for guys and gals, are made from recycled polyester, continuing that theme of sustainability. Even the zippers are recycled, so you can enjoy the warmth that the smart jackets give while also feeling good about your positive impact on the environment. The clothing is washable, but you’ll have to remember to remove the battery first before you do.

The Quanta Vici smart thermal clothing line is exclusive to Kickstarter and starts at $149 for the “base” range, while the “smart” line with the built-in thermostat starts at $179. But with this one-time Kickstarter-exclusive flash sale, you can get any single Smart product, be it the jacket, vest, or glove, for only $159.

Elegant, effective, and environment-friendly, Quanta Vici’s smart heated slim jackets and leather gloves demonstrate the true meaning of wearables without going overboard on the tech.

US Army Extreme Cold Weather Face Masks: A Little Bit on the Creepy Side

Designed for use in the coldest weather conditions, these United States Government Issue extreme cold weather face masks are the same ones worn by the US Army during operations in frigid climates. Fingers crossed Santa doesn’t decide to wear one while he’s delivering presents this year, because the last thing I want for Christmas is a heart attack.

Available from Kommandostore for a reasonable $15, the exterior is made of waterproof vinyl, with mouth and nose access available via snap secured flaps. The interior is 100% cotton for the ultimate in comfort while fulfilling whatever fantasy it is you bought one for in the first place. Just don’t tell me what that is, I don’t want to know.

I wonder what percentage of these are bought for actual extreme cold weather applications, and what percentage are bought for extreme perversion applications. I assume there’s also a small percentage that are bought for both, like the overlapping portion of a Venn diagram. Admittedly, I do have to respect someone who knows how to get their money’s worth out of a product.

This Arctic puffer jacket stores sunlight and glows in the dark to keep you visible at night…

Windproof, waterproof, and warm enough to see you down to -40°C (also coincidentally -40°F). These features alone would be a pretty impressive feat for a puffer jacket, but trust the guys at Vollebak to go above and beyond when it comes to textiles, material sciences, and fashion.

Say hello to the Solar Charged Puffer from Vollebak. Its name sort of gives the product away, but hey, it’s probably the jacket’s most defining feature. Crafted from a highly responsive phosphorescent material that can be instantly charged and made to glow in the dark, the Solar Charged Puffer is potent enough to respond even to flashlights, leave alone sunlight. When exposed to light, the jacket almost instantly begins giving off a kryptonite-esque glow, making it incredibly handy in low-visibility outdoor scenarios. The material is so locally responsive, you can actually write messages in the light too, just for kicks!

Its spotlight-feature aside (not my strongest pun, but I digress), the jacket was also built for sheer extremes. Like a lot of Vollebak’s gear, the Solar Charged Puffer is built to be wind-proof, waterproof, durable, and outfitted with more than enough pockets on the outside and the inside for you to stash your stuff. An insulating layer on the inside (built from recycled plastic) performs better than down, providing warmth in extremely cold conditions, but also giving you breathability so you don’t feel stuffy. Along with that, a detachable hoodie keeps your entire upper-half covered, from head to waist, when you’re out in the unforgiving outdoors.

Human patient put in suspended animation for the first time

Scientists (and sci-fi fans) have been talking about suspended animation for years. The idea that the functions of the human body can somehow be put on "pause" while life-saving medical procedures are performed (or a person is sent into space, a la A...

Two minutes is all it takes for this jug to turn hot coffee into an icy-cold beverage

While this beverage-jug can’t really do the whole water-to-wine thing, it’s pretty darn miraculous anyway. Meet the Coldwave. It claims that it can, without any electricity, turn any room-temperature beverage cold in as little as 30 seconds… and can chill down boiling hot coffee in just under 2 minutes.

The Coldwave Beverage Chiller comes in two parts. A jug/pitcher to hold the beverage needed to be chilled, and a specialized lid that holds water. The lid’s unique design doesn’t sit above the jug, but rather inserts itself into the jug, immersing itself within the beverage. Store the lid in a freezer for a few hours and the water it holds turns to ice. Place the lid into the jar, and the ice instantly cools the beverage, without ever making contact with it. The lid’s design maximizes beverage-to-ice contact by increasing surface area, and allows you to cool your drink without diluting it.

The lid works much like those metallic or stone beverage-chillers, but uses a number of HDPE tubes (with ice inside) to instantly cool your beverage. Since the lid immerses itself into the jug, the Tritan-polymer jug comes with a maximum-filling line etched into it, so that your drink doesn’t overflow when the lid inserts itself in. The Coldwave Beverage Chiller can cool down as many as 2 hot beverages, or 6 room temperature beverages in a single freeze cycle, and can do so in a matter of seconds, without diluting your drinks. Now that’s a summertime miracle, if I’ve ever seen one!

The Hydro Flask Cooler Cup is a life-saver for those hot summer picnics

Insulated sleeve to keep your beverages chilled - Hydro Flask Cooler Cup

I imagine that there are just a few things that are worse than drinking lukewarm beverages in the heat. Imagine cracking open a chilled can of soda, taking a sip, and then forgetting about it for a minute only to find that the soda is now at room temperature. It doesn’t taste the same, does it? Certain drinks are best served chilled, but the minute you’re outdoors, you’re left with a very small window of time before those drinks ‘lose their cool’.

The Hydro Flask Cooler Cup greatly expands that window of time. Designed to keep your chilled beverages frosty (or even keep hot drinks hot), the Hydro Flask Cooler Cup is a versatile little holder for your bottle/can that allows the drinks within them to maintain their temperature for longer. A silicone sleeve allows you to snugly and securely fit your drink can or bottle into the Cooler Cup, letting your drink stay refreshingly cool for longer.

The Hydro Flask Cooler Cup comes made from recycled stainless steel, and with a proprietary construction that insulates liquids you put inside it. In fact, aside from using it as a holder for your bottle or can, you can directly use the Cooler Cup as a tumbler/glass by directly pouring drinks into it! Basically anything to escape drinking room-temperature beverages again…

The Hydro Flask Cooler Cup is a winner of the iF Gold Award for the year 2019
