Bedside speaker serves as book holder, audiobook player, note taker

When I’m reading a book late at night in my bed, there are times when I want to write down a fleeting thought or a mini-review of my current reading companion. But when a notebook or phone is not near me or I’m too tired to get up, I just tell myself “I’ll write it down in the morning” only for me to eventually forget. A device that can help me with that would be very welcome.

Designers: Yujin Je and Hanyoung Lee

This new product concept called Tlas may be the answer to that particular problem of mine. Basically, it is a book place holder that is also a speaker and a recorder. The name itself means “to listen and speak” and so you get the best of both worlds, whether you’re reading a physical book or listening to an audiobook, plus it also gives you the ability to record your thoughts if you don’t have a notebook or a phone nearby.

The renders of the device look like any other Bluetooth speaker. It’s obviously bigger than most that are in the market now but when you place your book on top of it, you’ll realize why it’s that size. There are book lovers who will cringe at the thought of breaking the spine and spreading the book over it but those who don’t mind this and who don’t have a bookmark handy will find it useful when reading in bed. You just have to lean over and place the book, go to sleep, and pick up where you left off when you wake up.

Aside from it being a placeholder for your book, it also has speaker capabilities. Supposedly, you can listen to your audiobooks on it but it seems like it’s only through the app that should come with it. It wasn’t really mentioned if you can connect it to other audiobook apps like Audible. You can also record your thoughts on a specific chapter or record a quote that you would like to remember later on. There isn’t much info about the connected app so we don’t really know how it will work.

The Tlas device also has a mood light function so it can serve as your light source at night whether reading or sleeping. You can also adjust the volume as you listen to your audiobook or as you record your thoughts. I would still need to know more about how the device actually works if it does become a reality before deciding whether I want to have one beside my bed or if I just continue falling asleep on my book and forgetting about what I wanted to write down the next morning.

This wireless speaker concept looks like an eerie UFO made of fabric

This speaker definitely sets itself apart not just from other speakers but from everything else in your room as well.

There is a growing trend these days to design or at least conceptualize speakers as something other than looking like a conventional speaker. Smart speakers try to blend in with the rest of the room decor to make them look more appealing as virtual hubs of smart homes. Others have tried to take that even further and disguised speakers either as everyday objects or more attractive decorative pieces that call your attention more because of their beauty than their functionality. This Bluetooth speaker is definitely part of the latter crowd and might even take things to the extreme, looking like nothing that would resemble a living room piece, yet, at the same time, is mesmerizing in its almost alien-like appearance.

Designers: Qi Liu, Shuang’er Wang

The designers say that the speaker’s form was meant to inspire images of floating and flying, and whether intentional or not, nothing calls to mind those thoughts better than a UFO. Although it’s not in the conventional saucer shape alien vessels are always presumed to take, the bulging top and bottom surfaces do resemble the same form from certain angles. The fact that the speaker is meant to be held up by a thin metal stand that makes it look like it is floating serves to reinforce that association.

Extraterrestrial references aside, there is indeed something visually intriguing about this Bluetooth speaker concept. It is mostly covered in a fabric-like material, save for the metallic filling sandwiched between the covers, giving it a more familiar and human flavor that contrasts with its alien shape. The soft material and soft curves are supposed to represent flowing water and the pleasant sound it makes. It also looks like the sine waves associated with sound, again perhaps an accidental detail that the designers didn’t intentionally think of.

Fabric material, especially one on display in such a lofty manner, is just begging to be touched, and the speaker concept actually encourages that. In fact, it’s the only way you can physically control the speaker, though it’s probably possible to control it remotely with a connected smartphone. A somatosensory camera on top recognizes gestures, like the direction of a swipe, and translates them into actions like changing the track or changing the volume.

1

The design doesn’t make any mention of the technical aspects of a speaker, like where the speakers, tweeters, and woofers would be located to maximize the flow of sound. Judging by the way it hovers above a platform, one can presume that a downward-firing speaker for the bass, while mids and treble could escape from the gap between the fabric-covered sides, which could compress the sound a bit too much. Having a top-firing speaker would probably be inconvenient and uncomfortable for people trying to adjust the speaker’s settings without having to feel the vibrations hitting their hands.

In terms of trying to design a speaker that inspires images of floating and flying, this Bluetooth speaker concept definitely checks that box, especially with the stand that holds it up and prevents it from wobbling on a surface. That it also conjures up images of unidentified flying objects might have been an accident or something that only certain cultures or people will get. The design pays special attention to the look and the feel of the speaker to create a striking yet comforting product, but it also leaves some questions open regarding the technical details that will actually make it work as a speaker.

Concept speaker with gramophone design can play music from your headphones

For those who love listening to music out loud (meaning not on their headphones or earphones), the search for the best Bluetooth speaker is probably part of their online window shopping experience. There are a lot of great ones to choose from out there but sometimes what interests me more are the product concepts from some really talented and imaginative designers out there. Not a lot of them become consumer products, but it’s pretty nice to dream right?

Designer: Charlotte Teneza

The concept for this Bluetooth speaker called Cornucopia is pretty interesting. On the surface, it’s a simple speaker inspired by nostalgia. Its design is based on the gramophone and also seems to have a bit of a nautilus shape. For kids who don’t know what a gramophone is, it’s what people used to listen to records in the olden days of the 1800s. Since a lot of people are on a nostalgic kick nowadays, such a design would appeal to some.

What makes the Cornucopia even more interesting though is that it serves a few more functions other than playing the music from your smartphone. It doubles as a headphone stand with its hook-like top to reduce the clutter on your desk. But there’s a proposed additional functionality to that stand. When you place the headphones on the hook, whatever is playing through your headphones will automatically be played on the loudspeaker. That gives you a pretty smooth transition from the headphones to the speaker and also from the speaker to the headphones eventually.

The Cornucopia speaker will also have Bluetooth volume control and can probably have other functionalities if ever it becomes an actual product. What would matter though is the sound quality, which is of course a pretty important aspect for true blue music lovers.

These wireless weatherproof landscape speakers NEVER need to be charged

With solar panels on 4 of its 6 sides, Lodge is the world’s first truly wireless solar-powered landscape speaker made to live outside that never needs a power cord or charging cable.

Meet Lodge, a speaker that was BORN for the outdoors. Designed to be used on lawns, porches, poolsides, beaches, riverfronts, and savannahs, Lodge is a heavy-duty energy-efficient speaker that relies on two things – the sun, and a music source. The speaker boasts of a robust, cuboidal design that has solar panels built into its top, sides, and rear, covering 180 square inches of space. That’s enough to power Lodge even on cloudy days, say the makers, Lodge Outdoors.

Designer: Tristan Cannan

Lodge is a no-cables, no-hassles kind of speaker. Designed to work wirelessly, the speaker relies on the sun for power, and you for music. Equipped with a Bluetooth 5.3 chipset (the latest as of January 2022), Lodge connects to devices as far as 100 feet away without a stutter in connection. Lodge even designed the speaker to withstand all the elements of the outdoors, from the sun to sand, and from light rain to even your powerful lawn sprinklers. Not just the speakers, but even the solar panels are designed to be shatter and chip-proof, allowing you to charge your outdoor speaker regardless of where you are.

Effortless Setup – Simply select any spot, insert the stakes, and mount your speakers in seconds.

Powered by the Sun – Covered in 180 square inches of high-performing, shatterproof solar panels to ensure your sound system is always charged.

Everything Proof – Designed to truly weather any storm, whether it’s splashes, rain, dust, sand, or dirt.

Bluetooth Connectivity – Play your favorite tunes with your favorite apps without worrying about latency or dropped connections.

So how powerful IS a solar-powered speaker? Well, considering Lodge is made for outdoor use, it does pack a punch. While its solar charging ability seems like its highlight, a speaker’s quality must always be measured by its sound, right? To that end, Lodge comes with a massive 4-inch primary driver, a 3/4-inch tuned dome tweeter, and a 4-inch passive subwoofer, giving the speaker its clear, balanced audio. A 50W amplifier allows Lodge to throw punches outdoors, and on the inside a battery gives your outdoor speaker 15 hours of running on a full charge (that’s long enough to go from sunset to sunrise, when it begins charging again).

Just in case you don’t have access to the sun at moment’s notice (in which case you’re probably living in a country that gets limited sunlight, or you’re in an underground bunker – who am I to judge), Lodge does have a USB-C port on it to keep the party going, outdoors as well as indoors. The speaker comes with a magnetic stand that plugs into the ground (sort of like a tiki torch), and you can unplug your Lodge at any time and carry it around with you wherever the party is.

Why hasn’t anyone made a truly wireless solar-powered speaker made to live outside? Well, a quick search on Google will yield a few results from some unknown brands, although Lodge hopes to cement its space in this relatively unexplored category. The Lodge Outdoors team isn’t new to this rodeo either: the company comprises a talented crew of experienced engineers and designers who have worked for companies like Bose, Makerbot, Eight Sleep, Flextronics, and more. Since September 2020 they’ve been conceptualizing and building the speaker, and they just launched on Kickstarter. A single Lodge currently costs $210 on Kickstarter (that’s a 30% discount off its MSRP) and they come in two and four speaker packs. Lodge begins delivering to backers as soon as August 2022.

This portable speaker lamp tries to create a mellow mood wherever you go

At a time when lights and sounds have become sources of distraction and overwhelm, this mood lamp and speaker in one sets the tone for a more peaceful atmosphere.

There is no shortage of smart speakers and smart lamps in the market today. You might even see a few that combine both functions in one body. This fusion of technologies to create a single multi-functional product can help save up on space and money, but sometimes the combination creates disharmony instead. Our senses are already inundated by the sights and sounds of modern life, including those coming from these smart appliances. Fortunately, there are designers and products that were made to go against the trend, like this beautiful Nordic-inspired lamp and speaker combo that tries to spread feelings of calm and peace instead.

Designer: WELLE

Click Here to Buy Now: $88. Hurry, only 470/500 left!

Everything about the WELLE portable lamp speaker (W201T) was envisioned and designed to convey a sense of harmony and mellowness. That character goes beyond the obvious appearance of the product, which clearly takes its cues from the minimalist movement as well as Nordic design languages. The absence of extraneous visual elements, out-of-place lines, and distracting colors help make the WELLE speaker lamp look more pleasing to the eyes. The very form of the device, a cone for the speaker with a disc on top for the LED lamp, is designed to draw your attention to the lamp and its mellowing light.

Even the colors chosen for the speaker lamp aren’t your regular hues. They’re meant to remind people of more calming and subdued tones, like the lushness of Forest Green, the warmth of Brick Red, the mellowness of Moonlight Yellow, and the neutrality of Modern Gray. The speaker area of the lamp uses eco-friendly premium textile from the famed Kvadrat, so your mind can also be at ease that the materials used here aren’t harming the environment.

Despite the almost laid-back appearance of the WELLE W201T, it hides a powerful speaker that lets you enjoy your tunes, be it a relaxing classical or a heart-thumping EDM. A down-firing woofer pushes low tones and bass down to the surface, making it bounce back to create a fuller soundstage. Two twitter units on each side of the cone produce a 360-degree surround sound experience. The speaker utilizes high-end audio components from Waversa System, which not only tuned the device for room surround sound but also lent its patented noise isolation technology to weed out static noise from your music.

Lightweight at 660g despite the 12-hour 2,000 mAh rechargeable battery inside, the WELLE portable speaker lamp lets you set up your preferred mood any time, anywhere. The folding handle makes it easy to carry the lamp around or hang it from a hook while still keeping its compact form when not in use. A beautiful piece of technology that looks great, whether on a table or hanging from a tree branch, WELLE lets you create your own oasis of peace and calm in the middle of the disruptions of the world around us.

Customizable Bluetooth Speaker is like a Build-A-Bear for audio hardware

Looking like something out of Teenage Engineering’s mad-scientist-laboratory, the Customizable Bluetooth Speaker is a visual concept by artist and designer Max Quest. The design incorporates a LEGO-style brick/grid system that allows you to plug modules together to create the audio hardware you’re looking for. Building on an existing practice known as modular synthesis, Quest’s designs seek to create an ecosystem of modules that are visually identical, making them come together to create a glorious mosaic that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

Designer: Max Quest

The modules in Quest’s ecosystem cover a wide range of requirements, from consumers to professionals. At the very heart of the speaker is the audio driver itself, which can be plugged into a screen (oriented in either landscape or portrait, depending on your needs). The speaker module itself comes with a volume knob, while playback control can be done either on your Bluetooth device or using the added touchscreen interface. However, things don’t just stop there. You can also add extra screens for notifications, turning your Bluetooth speaker into a smart hub, or opt for modules that let you play with your audio signal, like MIDI interfaces, etc. to effectively turn your speaker into a synth or STEM player/mixer.

Some of these modules echo a simplicity that’s reminiscent of MP3 Players from decades ago – rather fitting, considering Apple finally bid adieu to the iPod today.

Quest’s design language remains one of my favorite things about this design. The raw yet vibrant appeal is a brilliant hat tip to Teenage Engineering’s ‘Fun-dustrial’ approach to design. Quest uses vibrant colors, simple shapes, and unusual CMF choices like speckles, marbled plastic, etc. that make the speaker look almost toy-ish, and positively delicious.

Ultimately, the Customizable Bluetooth Speaker’s appeal is absolutely universal. Its colorful design and simplicity are appealing to children as well as adults, and the ability to build a product that uniquely fits your needs makes it perfect for amateurs as well as professionals.

Sadly though, this speaker is just conceptual for now. Created more as a design exercise than as an actual proof of concept, Quest’s concept was made to test his designing and modeling skills. However, it would be fun if he just decided to build a few prototypes out, just for kicks. A collab with Love Hultén, perhaps??

Marshall Willen brings an ultra-compact Bluetooth speaker to the party

Probably better known for its guitar amps, Marshall has joined the Bluetooth speaker party in the earlier parts of the decade, bringing its signature design language to homes and on the road. Although it has quite a number of these audio devices under the heading of “portable,” Only the Emberton (both generations) can really lay claim to that title, at least until now. Joining the growing number of ultra-compact wireless speakers in the market, Marshall is announcing the newest member of its family that comes in an even more convenient package that belies not only its durability but also its more sustainable origins.

Designer: Marshall

Marshall’s amps are famous for the crisp and smooth quality they produce, and some of that has rubbed off on its speakers. Not everyone, however, might be in the market for something big and bulky, even for a more portable Emberton II. That’s why the brand is now trying its hand at something even more compact that’s also built to withstand the sometimes rough lifestyle of younger crowds.

This small block crams a 2-inch 10W full-range driver and two passive radiators inside a stylish package that bears Marshall’s signature look of a predominantly black surface overlaid with brass accents, including the brand’s name. There’s also a Cream colorway coming that offers a lighter hue on all sides except the back.

In addition to looking more handsome than a typical Bluetooth speaker, the Willen also has an interesting story to tell about where it comes from. Its rugged body is advertised to be PVC-free, and 60% of the plastics that it does use are made from recycled post-consumer electronics. It’s a smart way to introduce younger people to more sustainable products, proving that they don’t need to compromise on quality and performance for something that is also friendlier to the environment.

That PVC-free body brings an IP67 rating to the Marshall Willen, which simply means it’s going to survive an accidental splash in the pool during your party. The rubber strap on its back makes it easy to carry the speaker around, but it also allows you to fix it on a pole or bar. Given its rather flat edges, the Willen can be propped up on its own or laid flat on any surface, freeing its users from having to worry about where to best place the speaker.

As a Bluetooth speaker, the Willen has a variety of features that can be unlocked with a smartphone. In addition to the typical support for streaming content from a mobile device, it is also possible to take hands-free calls thanks to its built-in mic. And just in time for its launch, Marshall also announced a new Stack Mode that lets owners increase the intensity and range of the Willen by wirelessly connecting it with other Willen speakers. The Black and Brass Willen will arrive on June 2 with a price tag of $120, unsurprising for a speaker from this marque. The Cream variant, however, is still promised to come sometime in Fall.
