R2-D2 Coffee Press: The Droid You’re Jonesing for

I always imagined that R2-D2 was one of those happy morning people that folks who have a hard time getting up and going each morning would hate. I see R2 beeping his way up and down the halls waking everyone. If you are the sort that needs some caffeine to get going each morning, R2 can help you to be a morning person too.

The R2-D2 coffee press holds 32 ounces of Joe, or about the average morning cup around the Technabob offices. R2 has a BPA-free plastic housing with a glass body and a food-grade stainless steel plunger and filter assembly. The glass carafe is dishwasher safe, but you can’t microwave it.

You can pre-order at ThinkGeek for $39.99 and it will ship in early November. Be sure to get your order in now. They’re sure to sell a crap-ton of these as holiday gifts.

Star Wars BB-8 Waffle Maker: The Forks Awaken

I like Star Wars, and I like tasty breakfast treats, so the BB-8 Waffle Maker sounds like the perfect product to me. It’s just like other waffle makers, only instead of being round with little cubbies to hold syrup, this one makes waffles that look like BB-8 from The Force Awakens.

It has non-stick cooking plates on both sides and an on/off switch so you can just leave it plugged in and ready to cook in case of a waffle emergency. Just like an actual droid, an indicator light glows when it’s ready to cook you up some perfectly soft, yet crispy waffles.

It makes waffles that are 5″ x 6.75″, and I want to eat a stack of them right now. You can get your BB-8 waffle maker at ThinkGeek for $39.99 right now.

Disneyland Testing New Interactive Droids for Star Wars Lands

Disney’s plans for Star Wars extend much further than just milking the property for all it’s worth in movie theaters. The company is also working on converting parts of Disneyland and Walt Disney World into epic Star Wars-themed lands, and now we have word that it’s testing some of the new characters that are designed to interact with guests. Look sir! Droids!

The new Star Wars lands are at least two years away, but they are hard at work as seen in this video. Disney fanatic DAPs Magic spotted this new interactive droid called Jake being tested at the Star Wars Launch Bay at Disneyland. Jake looks pretty cool, even if he does have a lame droid name. We aren’t sure if someone is controlling it, if it just follows a track in the floor, or if it is doing it’s thing independently.

Jake can apparently interact with the exhibits, like how he rolls up to a control panel and beeps at the computer and shake his head. Let’s just hope he doesn’t crash into people or knock over any kids.

What to expect from Lenovo’s Tech World event this week

Fett2-D2: Boba Bot

Fett2-D2 (or is it R2-Fett2?) is the perfect droid/bounty hunter mashup. He can hold Death Star plans, serve drinks, or hunt down smugglers for bounties. He already had jets. Now he has another. This droid would be the ultimate bad guy.
This awesome Mandalorian astromech was spotted by cosplayer Victoria Schmidt at MegaCon 2016.

It’s awesome, but it makes me sad, because I really wish I could get a toy based on this droid. They really did a great job getting all of the details just right. Maybe this guy could be Boba Fett’s sidekick in the Boba Fett movie they have planned. I wouldn’t mind that at all.

BB-8 Cosplay Kid Is Adorbs

If you don’t find this little girl to be the cutest cosplay you have ever seen, you are clearly a hard hearted, sinister, evil SOB. This is one of the most glorious BB-8 costumes I have seen. Inside the little ball is a tiny little girl who is as adorable as they come.

This thing gets me right in the AWWWWWWWWs. She even has a little blue puffy thing on her thumb for BB-8’s lighter.

I don’t know who made this costume, but it turned up at WonderCon 2016, and this little girl will win Halloween if she wears this again. Also, she wins a bonus prize for not being scared at all by that Alien xenomorph.

LEGO Rolling BB-8 Concept: Brick Ball

We’ve seen a couple of cool LEGO BB-8 models, but this LEGO Ideas proposal by Mark “mjsmiley” Smiley and James “artbot138” Garrett is significant because it can actually roll while its head stays upright, all using commercially available LEGO parts.

While the droid’s body may not look like a LEGO part at first glance, it’s actually a model of the planet Tatooine, which is part of LEGO set #9675 along with Sebulbba’s Podracer. Of course Mark and James had to paint over Tattooine to match BB-8’s body, but it couldn’t be helped. The magnets under the head are attracted to the magnets inside the body, which are kept upright by weights. Those magnets work together with that small wheels that are also under BB-8’s head to keep the part upright when the body rolls. Speaking of rolling, the model can roll only on one axis – forward and backward – but it’s good enough for a relatively simple LEGO set.

You can roll BB-8 on the ground, but Mark and James also made a display stand with wheels on its base so you can roll BB-8 in place. The set also comes with BB-8’s arc welder and thumbs-up torch, which can be stored in the base. All in all the set consists of about 180 pieces.
