Kids lamp concept offers a more comforting and sustainable way to help children sleep at night

Many people can’t sleep with the lights on, especially bright ceiling lights, but it’s a habit that may have been developed over the course of years. In contrast, children find it hard to sleep in the dark, especially when their imaginations and senses get the better of them, increasing their body tension and preventing them from descending into more relaxed states. The market for night lamps for kids is a big one, and, unfortunately, it’s a wasteful one as well. There is plenty of room for improvement and many problems to tackle, and this lamp design concept for kids tries to address those concerns from multiple angles, providing a smarter yet friendlier companion for the night.

Designer: Arlen Smart

Children’s products are specially designed to appeal to the younger interests and sensibilities of kids, but for some reason, that is often equated to the use of plastic materials and designs that are hard to repair or disassemble. The end result is often mountains of improperly disposed of toys, furniture, and accessories that endanger the very future of the planet that these kids will have to live on. At the same time, however, designing for sustainability seems to be a bit harder to pull off for kids’ products, a presumption that the Lumo light concept is trying to prove wrong.

Right off the bat, the night lamp looks like a toy, making them feel and look like friends that children can trust to watch over them at night. The handles on the sides look like arms, while the lampshade at the top looks like its head. The lamp is also supposedly easy to clean, disassemble, repair, and recycle, but there are also parts that won’t be easy for kids to reach, like an anti-affordance area at the top to prevent kids’ fingers from being trapped.

The lamp is also designed to be a bit smarter in how much energy it uses up by changing the way it lights up a space to help a child through the different phases of falling asleep. A wide, projected light from the top, for example, could give something for kids to focus on, lulling them to sleep. A “full-body” night mode lamp brings a gentler glow around the room to provide a sense of security, while a torch lamp can help them navigate in the dark when they need to go to the toilet. The lamp is also equipped with sensors that will prevent damaging a child’s sensitive eyes with bright light.

Smart, sustainable, and friendly, the Lumo not only brings forward a new design but also a new way of thinking about designing kids’ products. A lot has changed in the world since the earliest days of plastic toys and products, and it’s high time to rethink the materials we use, which could actually be harmful to children, and the way we make them for longevity and sustainability.

UFO Abduction Night Light: Take Me to Your Sleeper

Inspired by the classic UFO shape perpetuated by old sci-fi films (real alien spaceships don’t look anything like this), this UFO LED Night Light is the perfect accessory to let aliens know you’re ready and willing to be abducted and join their human zoo. Made by ANQIA and available on Amazon (affiliate link), the light has 12 LEDs, three different lighting modes, and four brightness levels.

Available in black or white, the rechargeable battery-operated lamp features strobe (aka abduction mode), warm white, and cool white light settings, as well as adjustable brightness of 20%, 40%, 60%, or 100%. Unfortunately, there is no 80%. If you’re looking for 80% you’ll just have to cover a couple of the LEDs with black electrical tape.

What’s your current night light? Mine is the moon. The best part is it never runs out of batteries. The worst part is on cloudy nights it isn’t very bright and it’s hard to read comics in bed.

Glowing Ceramic Tardigrade Night Light

Tardigrades (aka water bears) are some of the most resilient animals on earth, able to survive even the harshest conditions, from extreme heat and cold, to air and food deprivation, to radiation. They’re practically unkillable, so what better animal to keep a watchful eye over you at night than this $16 Tardigrade Night Night from Archie McPhee? Sure, its mouth looks like a nightmare, but that will keep all the other monsters away.

Measuring 4-1/8″ x 2-1/4″, the night light is a traditional ceramic white when not in use but glows a phosphorescent green when turned on (powered by two LR44 batteries, included). Of course, being over four inches long, it’s significantly larger than actual tardigrades, which top out at around 0.5mm full grown. Those are some tiny bears! I still wouldn’t poke one, though, just for the record.

This kind of reminds me of those light-up Hasbro Glo Worm plushies from the ’80s. I think I might still have mine in a box in the basement somewhere. Just don’t listen to my wife if she tries to tell me it’s not in a box because I sleep with it every night. She’s lying. The same goes for whatever she says about my blankie.

DIY Rocket Ship Night Light Kit: For Space Dreams

Space: the final frontier. I mean at least according to Star Trek. I always thought the final frontier was death. But enough deep philosophizing, this is the $28 DIY Rocket Night Light Decoration available from Apollo Box. The kit includes everything you need to make a rocket ship night light like the one seen above, provided you have the necessary do-it-yourself skills. I’m… not very confident.

Available in both battery and USB powered models, the kit includes a string of lights, clear base, cotton “smoke”, plastic tube armature (to hold the rocket up), and modeling clay and paint to shape and decorate the rocket ship. It also includes two hot glue sticks (gun not included) to stick everything together. As you can see in the video below, the kit is VERY do-it-yourself. Or, in my case, very honey-can-you-please-do-it-for-me.

So you’re basically responsible for making the whole thing from scratch. And do you know what happened the last time I tried to make something from scratch? Everybody who ate the lasagna got sick, and now I don’t get invited to pot-lucks anymore. Food for thought.

Amazon’s 3-in-1 humidifier doubles up as an aroma diffuser and a night-lamp

No, it isn’t Harman Kardon’s latest speaker or a fancy upgrade of the Amazon Echo. This is, in fact, the Amazon Basics Humidifier which also comes with a built-in fragrance diffuser, as well an ambient lamp at night.

I’m not entirely sure whether the resemblance to the Harman Kardon Aura Studio is intentional or not, but it definitely gives the Amazon Humidifier a certain visual appeal. The humidifier is powered by ultrasonic tech that helps create a uniformly distributed mist of vapor in the air. An auto-sensing mechanism allows it to switch on when the air gets exceptionally dry, and turn off after a while. Available in 2 sizes (2L and 4L), the humidifier even integrates an oil-diffuser tray, allowing you to put a few drops of your favorite essential oil in and having the fragrance waft into the air around you, and comes with a built-in night-light that emits an ambient blue glow. Besides, you could easily just hide an Echo Dot behind it and pretend you’ve got yourself a fully pimped-out Harman Kardon setup… I promise I won’t judge.

A Sleepy Time Companion

sleeping_01

If you’re like me and love falling asleep with a little bit of light on, you also know how disruptive that light can be once you actually fall asleep! Then there’s getting up to shut it off… and by the time you get back to bed you’re entire sleep pattern is a mess.

That is, unless you have “Sleeping I”… its an innovative nightlight that gradually dims as you doze off. Just like you, the adorable character it closes its sleepy “eyes” to reduce the amount of light showing through. Better yet, there’s a built-in speaker so it doubles as a Bluetooth audio device when you’re awake. Designed for kids who have trouble falling asleep, it’s one some of us adults can appreciate too!

DRAFT CKIE Product of the week – Kaleido Torch & Night-light

kaleido_torch_1

The Kaleido torch is all about great combinations. With its simple construction, the torch can get converted into an ambient lamp just by sliding an opaque sleeve downwards. Available in four different colors, the Kaleido is made out of Aluminum and ABS, making it extremely lightweight and resilient to drops and knock-overs. The sleeve on the middle can be moved upwards and downwards to expose the night-light diffuser, and you just need to move the sleeve up or down to increase or decrease the brightness of the lamp.

The Kaleido torch brings an element of fun in a dark, light-less situation. Not only is it functional, its fun design means you’ll want to use it all the more! Ditch your smartphone flashlight, it isn’t even close to being this much fun!

Knightlight is for Dark Knights

This night light is actually a knightlight. Get it? I do and it’s very pun-ny. This humorous and no doubt noble knightlight was created by Professor Theodosius O’Bliviate, a 15-year old crafter and prop maker. And it looks awesome.

knightlightzoom in

It was made from a novelty radio he found in a junk shop. He took the speaker and electronics out, then put a 12-volt light in the opening for the speaker. He used a junk harmonica to cover up the slots for the volume and tuning knobs.

This knightlight would look great in any castle. I love all of the details. Not bad at all for a Professor of that age.
