The Shower Power speaker is perhaps the most literal definition of clean energy – you know, since it runs on shower water which ‘cleans’ you? Alright, not my finest joke, but let’s really divert our attention back to the Shower Power, a Bluetooth Speaker that runs on hydroelectric power.

The speaker sits right between your outlet and shower-head, using a turbine to charge its internal battery. Flowing water generates power for the speaker the same way a dam generates electricity for nearby areas. Water is forced through an internal impeller, which rotates with the water’s pressure. The impeller is hooked to a generator, which supplies the Shower Power with electricity, while the water flows right out of the outlet and through the shower-head, giving you perhaps one of the cleanest energy solutions ever!

The Shower Power is designed to work with most shower-heads, including even the hand-held ones. Your shower’s water pressure (or PSI) ideally determines how much the speaker’s battery gets juiced, but even the weakest of showers should provide the speaker with enough power to really get you through your bath routine – we’re looking at you, Jerry Seinfeld. Officially, a fully-charged Shower Power runs for 14 hours on a full battery, and well over 170 hours when used with running water. The speaker pairs with your phone or any Bluetooth device to immerse you with tunes as you bathe (or you could listen to your favorite podcast in the shower – who are we to judge), while a waterproof control panel on the Shower Power lets you increase or decrease volume and toggle playback. There’s even a speaker with internal LEDs in the works, to uplift your shower routine with spectacular audio-visual magic!

This smart helmet uses organic photovoltaics for clean energy while keeping you stylish and safe!

WertelOberfell, a Germany-based designed studio, recently debuted their energy self-sufficient bicycle helmet, ESUB Tracks. The helmet is designed to keep cyclists safe and the creative team at WertelOberfell certainly checked all their corners when considering the different obstacles cyclists face on the road. Built-in smart features buzz through this helmet and they’re powered by organic photovoltaics that gives this helmet all the energy it needs to keep you safe.

In order to turn the ordinary helmet into an energy self-sufficient, smart helmet, the designers turned to science. Printed organic batteries and a Nano Arduino, a microcontroller, contained in one unit at the rear of the helmet, run the whole show and all the incorporated electric components, but the helmet’s surface provides the energy. The designers achieved the futuristic look of this helmet by wrapping flat, organic, printed photovoltaics all around in order to use the outer layer of ESUB Tracks as a PV module that absorbs sunlight and turns it into energy. This form of energy self-sufficiency allows the helmet’s batteries and smart features to constantly recharge and give power to the varying smart features and electric components that distinguish ESUB Tracks. ESUB Tracks carries a lot of hidden features, one being an integrated speaker. The helmet’s printed piezoelectric, bone conduction speakers are heat pressed onto leather straps with an embossed interior layer that slightly presses against the user’s ear for close acoustics. The speakers connect via Bluetooth from your smartphone and provide crystal clear audio without reducing the sound levels that surround that user. Along the backside of ESUB Tracks is the helmet’s sensor domain.

Here’s when the safety perks come in. If cyclists wearing ESUB Tracks aren’t aware of what’s going on behind them, then rear proximity sensors will let users know when automobiles or other cyclists are getting too close. Additionally, haptic feedback is integrated into the sensors so that piezoelectric haptic actuators vibrate whenever ESUB Tracks senses some sort of road danger or just close vehicle proximity. Just beneath the user’s chin, a printed piezoelectric microphone understands voice commands so that if a cyclist has to make a turn, then the microphone can register voice commands such as turn signals, no hand motion required. To top it off, or bottom it off, ESUB Tracks integrates self-adjusting chin straps that use an electric drive to fasten straps until the helmet fits comfortably and safely atop the cyclist’s head, no manual adjustments needed. Maybe this is actually what they all meant when they said they could ride with no hands.

Meet the NE-1, an experimental face-helmet that looks like something a bee-keeper would wear, but is in-fact protective headgear that’s both safe and comfortable to wear in the pandemic. Developed by Texas-based ValhallaMED, the NE-1 helmet combines the face-shield and mask into a singular device you wear on your head. Fitted with a powered air system and a patent-pending filtration mechanism, the NE-1 routes air-flow to make sure the air you breathe is 95% pure, but without needing an air-tight seal like most conventional masks. Not only does the mask filter the air you inhale AND exhale, it comes fitted with coolers that keep you breezy and comfortable outdoors. The cool air, aside from giving you overall comfort, also helps the NE-1’s wide visor from misting or fogging up. The result is similar to wearing an actual bike-helmet. Face-protection and full visibility, albeit with two significant upgrades… clean air, and active powered cooling that lets you wear the helmet for hours.

One would argue that a futuristic, Jetsons-inspired helmet would be incomplete with its own comms system… which is why the NE-1 is outfitted with a Bluetooth audio system that lets you both speak and listen to others while you’ve got the mask on! The mask comes with a flexible neoprene neck-seal and a unique shape, accommodating a wide range of face sizes, and even letting you comfortably wear it with spectacles or sunglasses!
