Necessity is the mother of invention… but iteration is the mother of innovation. The design brief for the face-mask has definitely changed a lot since March 2020 when the lockdown really began. You see, back in the first few months of the lockdown, the mask’s design brief was to be a better version of the N95 (a pretty achievable distinction if you ask me), but it’s different now. Face masks today need to compare with the face masks that launched last year. They need to be better than their previous selves, which becomes a bit of a challenge when you consider how these masks touted features like air-tight seals, replaceable N95 filters, fans, and comfortable silicone rings. That’s the challenge the purME Air faces… being better than its previous iteration that launched in August last year.

The purME Air tries to take things a step further by being a mask so capable, you could even exercise with it on. Its robust design is engineered to be smaller and lighter than its previous iteration, while including larger, more quiet fans on the inside. The fans control air-flow with up to 3 speed settings, mimicking the effects of a breeze within your mask. Air is passed through N95 filters both when it enters as well as exits the mask, ensuring purity throughout; and as a safety measure, each mask comes with built-in UV-C lights that sterilize the insides of the mask when you’re not wearing them. Overall, the purME Air weighs just 80 grams (that’s about as heavy as two AirPods cases), while occupying a smaller footprint on your face. It even comes with a more powerful battery, boasting of up to 8 hours of use.

While the purME from last year was born as a product of the pandemic and bad air quality, the purME Air builds on where its previous iteration left off. The purME Air retains the same N95-level protection for daily use while offering the ability to upgrade your filters to P100 level for extra protection, however, now the mask also offers the ability to put FFP1 level filters in, focused more on indoor or in-vehicle use. While the aforementioned filters targeted microparticles and pollutants, the FFP1 is much more breathable, and focuses on stopping microorganisms and allergens from entering. The outer plastic shell on the purME Air is removable, revealing the larger centrifugal fans on the inside that work harder (while keeping noise under 50dB) at circulating air, creating constant pressure within the mask… a fancy way of saying that the mask always remains breathable because of the air constantly passing through it. Another significant upgrade in this year’s mask is the inclusion of UV-C lights that work to self-sterilize the mask’s insides, instantly neutralizing any microorganisms residing on the surfaces of the mask and within the filters. The lights are powered by sensors that detect when the mask is off your face and kept laid down. Lift the mask up to wear it and the UV-C light automatically shut off, saving you the trouble of needing to wipe your mask down with a Kleenex. Weighing just 80 grams, the mask is significantly smaller and lighter than other fan-powered face-masks, while still sporting a silicone body that creates a protective seal around your nose and mouth. The purME Air even comes with around-the-head bands (as opposed to the around-ear bands from last year’s model) for better comfort, along with a power button and USB port right on the front for easier access.

In its second iteration, the purME Air narrows its vision to solve the problems we have ahead of us… from the pandemic itself to deteriorating air quality, allergens, or even other immunity-compromising microorganisms. Layer Design teams up with Nga Nguyen to create wellness products, including a reusable mask!

2020 saw a radical shift in the basic thought process when it comes to daily life challenges – maintaining hygiene at all times, being one of them. With so much emphasis on personal well-being and the need to stay clear of harm’s way, the radical shift in how the design and fashion industry operates has also been there. That’s the reason why London-based LAYER Design founded by Benjamin Hubert has joined forces with fashion’s patient zero, Nga Nguyen, to create a range of products for her health and wellness startup Never Go Alone. Creative minds in both the creative houses worked in collaboration for a year to meticulously craft the protective products, their packaging, branding, and the art direction.

The range of products tailored for the ‘new normal’ is understandably centered around personal hygiene, and are going to be launched in the UK in Spring 2021 with a global release following soon after that. The collection for starters is going to have a reusable mask, refillable hand sanitizer, and a refillable sanitizing wipes case. The one to focus on here is the reusable mask dubbed ‘Behind the Mask’ that’s designed keeping in mind convenience and safety at all times. And yes, it is inspired by the visual language of ‘athleisure’ – making it ideal for people who are always on the move. The studio explains, “Never Go Alone is a wellness brand that was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic and empowers users to live and travel responsibly in times of unprecedented change. LAYER designed each product to create a memorable experience through the engagement of the senses, from tactile materiality and intuitive touchpoints to bespoke scents.”

The outer layer of the mask is made from lightweight knitted fabric for high breathability, and it also conceals the bespoke PM2.5 filter that’s replaceable. Its diamond shape perfectly takes the shape of the facial contours without any discomfort. So that you don’t ever get bored of the Behind the Mask, it comes with modular interchangeable earloops for changing the color and style to personal preference.

Oakley finally designed a spectacle-friendly N95 mask that prevents your glasses from fogging up

It’s obviously in Oakley’s best interests to make face-masks that accommodate spectacles! Considering that more than 75% of the human adult population wears spectacles, and that fogged glasses can be such a deterring factor when it comes to masks, the opportunity to make a spectacles-friendly mask has been around for quite some time. As a pioneer in the eyewear (and sportswear) industry, Oakley was perfectly positioned to tackle this problem head-on, and I’m sort of surprised they didn’t launch this sooner! Meet the MSK3, a face-mask with replaceable N95 filters, and a dedicated eyewear channel along the nose that lets you comfortably wear spectacles without them fogging up.

The Oakley MSK3 is a clever solution to a largely ignored problem. The mask comes with a mesh front that looks stylish and basically gives you the feeling of breathability, while a high-performance, disposable filter sits behind it, giving you over 95% filtration efficiency of particles down to the size of 0.3 microns. Adjustable straps allow you to calibrate the mask to the size of your face, while the MSK3’s most innovative feature, the redesigned nose-bridge, ensures a perfect seal around the nasal area. The silicone nose-bridge also has a dedicated eyewear channel – a thin strip that lets you perfectly wear your specs over your mask, sealing the nasal area. This seal ensures that A. your spectacles don’t slip off while running or jogging, and B. exhaled air doesn’t leak from the area around your nose, fogging your glasses. The result is a mask that’s impeccably designed to solve the one MAJOR problem nobody thought of solving… and sure, you can look at the product from Oakley’s obvious profit angle, but then again, if it means a better, safer, and more comfortable mask-wearing experience for me and 75% of all adults, I guess that’s a pretty remarkable achievement too!

Face mask giving you foggy glasses? This transparent mouth-shield can fix that.

It’s 2021 and face masks still suck. They hurt your ears, cling to your mouth, fog your glasses, and have your upper lip feeling hotter and more humid than a sauna. However, they don’t have to be that way. The Mask Shield has a clever workaround to make wearing masks a lot more comfortable. Forming an intermediary layer between the mask and your face, the Mask Shield gives you breathing space… quite literally. It makes sure your mask isn’t sticking to your nose and mouth, while ensuring that a proper seal is created around your nose so your glasses don’t fog up. Lastly, it sits on your face like a pair of spectacles, causing less strain to your ears, and comes with a set of hooks that hold onto your mask (instead of having your mask loop around your ears).

The Mask Shield is more like a face-shield for the lower half of your face. It makes wearing a mask more comfortable, and lets you wear your PPE for longer without feeling strain or fatigue. The transparent design means you could potentially wear just the Mask Shield while socially distancing, and pop your mask on when you’re around people. The rigid body acts almost like an endoskeleton, giving your mask some definition so it doesn’t cling to your nose and mouth, and that nose-seal provides a major service to humanity by keeping your glasses fog-free, because believe it or not… nearly 75% of all human adults wear glasses!

This reusable face-mask comes with a built-in sensor that tells you when to change the filters

The design community was quick to rise to the challenge of helping the world overcome the Coronavirus, but this came at a cost. Human consumption of plastic tripled in 2020 with the use of surgical face-masks, so designer Ollie Butt decided to combat both the virus and the trail of plastic trash the pandemic left behind. Ollie’s Face Mask (although conceptual) paves the way forward for an aesthetic, efficient, reusable gas mask that can actively filter air coming from the outside, while continuously measuring the quality of the air inside the mask. Equipped with a circuit board on the inside and a bunch of sensors (including one for sensing humidity), and an outward-facing LED strip, the Reusable Face Mask looks and feels cutting-edge.

The LED strip plays a dual role, adding a futuristic flair to the device while also allowing the mask to tell you when to change your filters. The humidity sensor on the inside can detect when the filters need replacing, and a simple plug-in-plug-out design detail lets you swap out old filters for new ones. The reusable mask comes with a silicone seal around the mouth, allowing it to fit comfortably while creating a tight seal, and around-the-head straps ensure you can wear the mask for long hours without worrying about ear-fatigue.

Blanc Full-Face Mask and HEPA Filter: If Daft Punk Made PPE

Looking to protect yourself from airborne pathogens and being identified by Big Brother? Well, you’re in luck. With the Blanc full-face modular mask with HEPA filter. Nobody will know who, or WHAT you are, but they will know you aren’t getting sick. Um, did we just pass a robot on the street?

Having already raised over $400,000 on Kickstarter, the Blanc is now looking for another round of crowdfunding on Indigogo, with a basic mask starting at $99, and one with an extra set of filters and your choice of colored front panels for $124. Obviously, with a 360-degree seal around your face to ensure you only breathe through the HEPA filters, these are not masks for the people who couldn’t be bothered to wear even a fabric mask in public. No, these are for people who WANT to wear a mask and don’t want anybody to be able to identify them, AKA superheroes, supervillains, low-level criminals, and weirdos.

The masks are advertised as being able to help a wearer “highlight their personal style,” which, from what I could gather from the promotional materials, is limited to what color exterior panels you choose. Obviously, I’ll be the Blue Ranger, then we’ll just need Yellow, Red, Pink, Black, and Green Rangers to form Megazord and finally put an end to Rita Repulsa.

Razer unveils world’s smartest transparent n95 face mask with UV-C sterilizing case and customizable RGB discs!

It is CES 2021 – the first-ever virtual avatar of the biggest tech event to kickstart 2021 and while most of us are excited by the influx of smart tech to improve our day to day life with the various gadgets, how can tech not handle the biggest question here – how does the newest technology affect/improve our covid infested world? 2021 promises to be the year of solutions, with vaccines rolling out with speed, while realistically, we know that face masks aren’t going anywhere. Razer, the world’s leading lifestyle accessories brand for gamers takes a dip in the face mask world with the ‘world’s smartest mask’ concept named the Project Hazel.

The face mask design is a glossy, waterproof, and scratch-resistant shell, transparent by design to allow for lip-reading, and made from recycled plastic. So far so good. The main attraction are the two circular ‘Active Ventilation’ discs that sit on the sides of your mouth and hold the reusable N95 filters that give a 95% filtration efficiency. These filters are detachable and rechargeable while giving the mask a futuristic aesthetic that goes to match the gaming setup you have with Chroma RGB LEDs. After all, every Instagram worthy gaming setup is in visual sync with each other, why should your mask not be a part of the new normal? While the public is torn between ‘take my money now’ and calling this an ‘April fools joke’ the RGB has surely caught the public’s attention. Jokes aside, if this is a feature that helps people keep their mask ‘on’ wherever they are, I am all for it. The rings can glow with the colour of your choice and the LEDs automatically detect and light up in a low light setting to illuminate your face so you can always be seen talking. How helpful is this feature, that is something we will know only once we actually try it but it does sound good in theory!

To add to the futuristic appeal of this mask, microphones and amplifiers are embedded in the ventilators that will project your voice through the mask (I wonder if I can tweak that to sound like Bane, or even say I’m Batman with credibility!). Currently, the team at Razer is working with THX sound engineers to balance the volume for optimal accessibility. Despite the tech it holds, Razer claims the mask to have a comfortable wearing experience – using a silicon guard to create a seal around your mouth and nose. The mask also boasts of adjustable ear loops to help with various face sizes. The mask is accompanied by an equally glossy and desktop-worthy wireless charging case that uses UV light to sterilize the mask while a mini display showcases icons – what they depict is unclear as of now.

Razer’s history of displaying awesome conceptual works at CES which then convert into reality gives us hope that this mask may come to life – given more tweaks and certifications from the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The mask is currently made for the masses, with no size variations or even allowances for a beard. Razer was one of the few companies worldwide that converted their manufacturing plants for the creation of surgical masks and wanting to pledge and donate up to a million surgical masks. So cross your fingers and hope that a realistic and inexpensive version of this mask is coming soon – after all, we all have cotton masks, but I’m quite sure, a more functional and aesthetic mask is something we can all do with.

Shipping Now: The Tesla of Face Masks uses dual fans to deliver cool + purified air to your face

I like to think that necessity being the mother of invention is a pretty noble reason to design a product. When Leandro Rolon first conceptualized the Atmoblue, he had no idea his product development cycle would smack dab coincide with the 2020 pandemic. Rolon designed the Atmoblue for himself, as an architect whose job required him to conduct multiple site visits on construction zones, and more importantly an architect based out of Beijing (which happens to be one of the most polluted cities in the world). Back in 2017 when he first came up with the idea of Atmoblue, face masks were a bit of a niche product, meant for medical personnel, people working in factories or construction, or with chemicals, and for a select group of people who wanted to breathe clean air outdoors. Rolon decided this niche audience could use a better alternative to traditional masks, and between that moment and now, a lot happened… a pandemic hit, Rolon found more people needed masks, and that more people struggled with wearing masks for long periods of time, and the Atmoblue went from a concept to production. The Atmoblue is currently shipping, and I asked Leandro what he thinks the post-pandemic future’s going to be like for face masks, what his customers think of the Atmoblue, and whether developing a mask during a pandemic was a necessity or an opportunity.

The truth is that the Atmoblue wasn’t developed as a result of a pandemic. It was developed to just help people breathe clean, cool, purified air. The pandemic just made more people realize the need for something like the Atmoblue. In fact, he tries not to call it a mask too, just because of how reductionist the term is. “The Atmoblue is an air-conditioner and air-purifier that’s small enough to fit on your face”, he says. The pandemic surely lends a usage-scenario to the Atmoblue, but Rolon says that the device holds much more potential because breathing clean air can be a necessity even without a pandemic. The Atmoblue team’s been working hard to follow WHO and CDC guidelines, but at the same time, it looks at the bigger picture. The presence of two fans, and 99% air-purifying filters covers a wide range of use cases. The mask creates what’s called “positive air pressure” inside itself, which actually makes it easier to breathe clean air. You could be trekking mountains or working out at the gym, and the mask’s dual fans end up cooling you down while supplying you with fresh air. You could even be a firefighter or a sanitary worker, and the mask ensures you don’t breathe in any harmful gases – just 99.99% purified air. Conversely, you could also be a doctor or a front-line worker, and the mask serves as a two-way air-purification system, keeping the environment safe and germ-free.

The Atmoblue was developed on a much smaller scale in 2018, with over 20,000 units sold (it won a couple of design and innovation awards too), but circumstances changed heavily running into 2020. Rolon mentioned the mask sported a valve back in 2018, because exhaled air didn’t need filtration in those circumstances. The newer version of the Atmoblue now comes with its own open-source valve cover (you can easily make your own or 3D print one) that blocks the air from exiting out the standard outlet. Instead, the air is made to pass through the filters again, allowing your breath to be filtered both times. Designed with a silicone face-seal, the Atmoblue creates a comfortable air-tight seal around your face, and a single-button interface lets you power the fans, allowing the mask to work like an air-conditioner for your face. One of Atmoblue’s most significant innovations is the fact that the fans come powered by AI that can tell when you’re shallow-breathing or deep-breathing. The AI controls the fan’s speed to match your breathing requirements, reducing it when you’re sitting, and increasing it when you’re walking/running/exercising. This adaptive fan speed allows the Atmoblue to work for anywhere between 3-5 hours on a full charge.

During our conversation, I asked Leandro whether he knew about mask-fatigue, mask-denial, and what his thoughts were on the future of masks. Mask fatigue and denial come from the same place, according to him… he believes (and I partially agree) that the masks we have today aren’t a future-proof solution. They’re uncomfortable to wear, they make it difficult to breathe through, and they fog up your glasses and give you hot, sweaty upper lips. Having experienced mask-fatigue himself, Leandro talks about his own experiences with the Atmoblue, and that a lot of the product’s customers agree that the Atmoblue feels a lot like wearing a fan on your face. The mask is adjustable and comfortable, doesn’t pinch your nose, and is relatively lightweight. The fans are extremely quiet, and it’s easy to talk through the mask too. Moreover, the constant breeze to your nose and mouth makes wearing the mask more pleasant than not wearing it… and that silicone ring ensures that your glasses don’t get fogged up. As far as the future of masks go, Leandro and the team at Atmoblue are working on ensuring the mask serves a variety of use-cases where clean, fresh air are a necessity. Medical staff, factory personnel, construction laborers, and firemen have been steady patrons of the Atmoblue, but the mask is aiming at serving the general population beyond the pandemic too. For starters, the Atmoblue smartphone app is slated to launch around the new year. It’ll help analyze the air quality where you are, letting you know if and when you need to wear the mask. It’ll also let you know when you can take the mask off, so that your battery and swappable air-filters last longer. Leandro feels that the future of masks will be much more than about just purifying air. He envisions a future where smart masks like the Atmoblue will help serve as health-wearables, being able to actively analyze the air you’re breathing in but also breathing out. He mentioned that a mask that detects illnesses, conditions, and even biostats like your blood sugar are in the works. Just like your smartwatch can analyze your heartbeat or count your steps, the future of smart masks will enable a wider approach to healthy living.

While that future is years away, the Atmoblue team is more focused on the current crisis we have on our hands. Well, Jetsons didn’t get the flying car right, but they sure as hell nailed the fact that we’d need to wear helmets outdoors!

Meet the NE-1, an experimental face-helmet that looks like something a bee-keeper would wear, but is in-fact protective headgear that’s both safe and comfortable to wear in the pandemic. Developed by Texas-based ValhallaMED, the NE-1 helmet combines the face-shield and mask into a singular device you wear on your head. Fitted with a powered air system and a patent-pending filtration mechanism, the NE-1 routes air-flow to make sure the air you breathe is 95% pure, but without needing an air-tight seal like most conventional masks. Not only does the mask filter the air you inhale AND exhale, it comes fitted with coolers that keep you breezy and comfortable outdoors. The cool air, aside from giving you overall comfort, also helps the NE-1’s wide visor from misting or fogging up. The result is similar to wearing an actual bike-helmet. Face-protection and full visibility, albeit with two significant upgrades… clean air, and active powered cooling that lets you wear the helmet for hours.

I love the Blanc Mask for a lot of reasons. Not only is it a functional piece of equipment that gives you 99.97% clean air to breathe while guarding your face, it also serves as a privacy protector, a fashion statement, and the pandemic equivalent of a Guy Fawkes mask – to show that you’re a part of a collective that believes in the protection of one’s health AND one’s anonymity.

It’s no accident that the Blanc Mask looks like a cosplay helmet from some anime series. The mask makes a conscious effort to look nothing like traditional PPE, but at the same time it’s every bit as protective as they are. I’ll dive further into the fashion element after getting the mask’s filter-specifications and overall performance out of the way. The Blanc provides a protective, full-face cover, giving you a tinted visor to look through, and specifically designed air-channels to breathe through. Two high-efficiency SGS-tested HEPA filters make sure the air you breathe is 99.97% pure, trapping any microparticles, microorganisms, and VOCs in the process. The mask itself offers an air-tight seal, while carefully calibrated pathways ensure the air you breathe always passes through a filter, giving you pure air with each breath. Air that you exhale passes out through outlets located at the base of the mask, ensuring your visor never gets fogged up. Should you choose, the Blanc even comes with a unique corrective visor system that gives you prescription visors, so you can effectively wear the mask without spectacles… although the mask’s inner padding offers enough space for you to wear your own glasses.

The Blanc’s highlight however is its form, which is an absolute deviation from anything we’ve ever seen before. Designed to be part fashion statement, part identity-concealer, the mask comes with a relatively opaque design that covers your entire face, barring the eyes, which have a tinted visor in front of them. The full-face design not only works as a traditional face-shield, but it’s quite literally visually a class apart, allowing you to be seen, but unseen. In fact, it’s designed to be modular too, with options to plug in add-ons like Bluetooth earpieces and voice-modulation devices. Pretty cool, eh?!

The mask’s designed to split vertically into two halves, allowing you to snap it on or off in mere seconds; and a wide headband goes around the back of your head, making sure you can wear the mask for hours without feeling any fatigue (especially around the ears, as is the case with most face-masks).
