I’ve never seen anything quite like how this unique pocket-knife opens and closes

You’ve got sliding blades, switchblades, even complicated blades triggered by linkages, but what Koss Workshop’s latest creation does is quite unique. The knife, literally titled ‘Weird Folding Knife’, sports a split handle design and a couple of linkages that allow the blade to slide in and out. The blade comes with a slot too, that keeps it aligned as you open and close the knife… and it’s entirely made from scratch using scrap metal and a fully-equipped metal workshop.

The Weird Folding Knife practically changes its entire silhouette as it opens and closes. The two-part handle separates to make way for the blade when closed and joins together seamlessly turning into a grip when the blade’s open. Made more as a hobby-piece than an actual knife meant for daily use, the Weird Folding Knife doesn’t come with a locking mechanism. Rather, it exists as a one-off proof-of-concept of how a knife’s handle could split apart to accommodate its blade. You can just see the GIF for yourself below.

The Weird Folding Knife comes with a two-part polished-brass handle and an 80mm W1-7 High Carbon Steel blade. When open, the entire knife measures 203mm, and when closed, is about the same length as the blade. What’s also rather clever about how the knife closes is that it manages to conceal the blade’s cutting edge between the two-part handles, making it safer.

Koss’ work of art, unfortunately, is only one of its kind, and got snapped up pretty much instantaneously by a passionate customer the minute it hit the Etsy store. After all, our pockets are prime real estate for everyday carry items and there’s only so much they can fit. It’s a good thing Compano, an everyday carry keychain carabiner folding knife, designed by Mike Bond for CRKT comes with a belt-loop clip so your pockets can stay open for business.

When it comes to pocket knives, size matters – we are talking blades after all. Coming just under 1.5 inches in length, the blade is reinforced with an added layer of carbon for a stronger and more durable edge compared to stainless steel. Stainless steel knives dull blades with added chromium, while high-carbon stainless steel delivers a sharper edge and firmness to the blade, but also falls vulnerable to easy rusting when exposed to moisture. The Compano folding knife leans on a swing mechanism to unfurl the high carbon stainless steel blade, which can regularly be sharpened for everyday maintenance. Bond also integrated a spring-loaded gate from which Compano’s carabiner rebounds to easily hinge up and down. With this added carabiner feature, Bond managed to take the best features from other essential daily-carry products and merge them into a keychain-sized folding knife that readily attaches to your body as you leave your front door.

Compano also features a classic locking mechanism with a slip joint feature that secures the knife in place when either opened or closed. When using the blade, Compano reaches a full length of 4.59 inches and only weighs around 2.20 ounces so whether the knife is used for carving or slicing, the job will always feel manageable. Since this is an everyday carry product, it’s important that it embodies a look and feel that has us instinctually reach for it before leaving the house. A portable pocket-knife with an aesthetic that’s fit for Aquaman!

I imagine Arthur Curry’s go-to weapon is his shining trident, but sometimes a small pocket-knife is all you need to get the job done. Launched as a highly limited edition run, the Hirin is designed by Dew Hara, son of eminent blade designer Koji Hara in partnership with CRKT.

Limited to just 500 pieces, the Hirin comes with a drop-point blade made from Böhler M390 stainless steel that folds right into its exquisitely styled 6AL4V titanium handle. The Hirin measures 5.2 inches when closed, opening up to become an 8.6-inch pocket-knife that’s really ideal for most outdoor tasks The blade opens in an ambidextrous fashion, allowing it to open or close either through the left or the right with a comfortable flick, thanks to CRKT’s IKBS ball bearing system. Each knife comes manufactured to perfection in Maniago, Italy, along with an exclusive leather case, designed by Hara too.
