Gundam as Classic Consoles: Hyperdimension Gundamia

We’ve seen Optimus Prime and Megatron as the PlayStation and Sega Mega Drive respectively. Here are various Gundam dressed up as even older consoles: Famicom, Super Famicom, Sega Mega Drive, PC Engine aka Turbografx-16 and two Game Boys.

Mangaka ikkyu019 made these gaming-themed gunpla. His model-painting skills may not be up to par with his drawing skills – if Google Translate is to be believed, ikkyu019 calls his Super Famicom Gundam “embarrassing” – but they’re all still cool. He’s no Sei Iori, but where else are you going to see a Gundam with a Power Glove? His RB-79 Balls are also visual puns – look closely at their windows to see what I mean.

Gundam Gunpla Retro Anime Painted Action Figure: Oldtype

Warhammer toy figures may be the canvas for some of the best custom paint jobs, but Gunpla enthusiast mumumuno53 cleverly made a case for Gundam models with this jaw-dropping Gundam RX-78-2 figure, which he painted to make it look like its anime counterpart.

I’ve been looking at these images for hours and I still find it hard to break the illusion. Eventually the gloves give it away, but the rest is just immaculately painted. I don’t even want to guess if the jet exhausts are truly flat or not.

Gundam Themed Japanese Burgers Look Gundamn Good

Japan seems to get all the strange foods, and of late, it seems that burgers have been a big focus of edible oddities. Japan had that all black hamburger at Burger King a while back that looked both tasty and gross at the same time. Now we learn that Japan is getting Gundam themed burgers.

Naturally, the burgers are available at the Gundam Café. The one called the Sleggar Burger sells for ¥700 (~$6 USD). The Gundam Burger will cost you ¥780 (~$6.50 USD), and the Char Zaku and Zaku II burgers cost a bit more at ¥800 (~$7 USD).

The burger with the pink bun looks rather gross; it has olives and some sort of tomato sauce on it. The one with what appears to be BBQ sauce and cheese I would totally eat – all it needs is bacon.

Reebok Gundam Instapump Fury: Mobile Shoes

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Instapump Fury, Reebok will be releasing 27 different variants of the lace-less shoes throughout spring and summer. I don’t know why there will be 27 variants and not 20, but I do know that two of those variants are based on the Gundam series.

The first colorway takes after the RX-78-2 aka the OG Gundam. The scheme makes the Instapump Fury look like kid’s shoes, but perhaps the gray part of the upper is more pronounced in person. The second colorway is based on another classic Gundam robot: Char Aznable’s MS-06S Zaku II. I actually like that one better because it’s gaudy, which is exactly the look that a freakin’ Reebok and Gundam mashup should aim for.

According to Milk, the shoes cost HK$1,499 each (~$190 USD). They should be in Reebok retailers soon. I bet Laplace’s Box has one of these inside.

Gundam Tombstone: Forever An Otaku

Gundam Tombstone

Some tombstones are legitimately funny, or clever, but we hardly see people being geeky after death. This Gundam tombstone expects to change that.

It turns out there is a huge stone sculpture of a Gundam (A mecha from the series of the same name) in Japan right next to a tomb-making place in Yasu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. We guess that with a history of over 30 years, some of the older fans, albeit still young, might have passed away, so this would explain the occurrence. Can you imagine a point when we’ll start seeing Evangelion or Pokemon tombstones? Might not be that far away,,,

Gundam Tombstone: A Proper Burial

If you love giant robots in life, celebrate your love of giant robots in death with a Gundam tombstone. It will be a lasting monument to your life that stands out and makes others take notice.

This huge Gundam tombstone is on display with more traditional tombstones at a Japanese monument shop in Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture. With this big guy watching over you, your afterlife will be safe. Your dirt nap restful. In the future, maybe we will all have cool tombstones like this one.

It beats having some weeping angels standing over your grave. Plus weeping angels move around a lot, so they wouldn’t even stay by your resting place for long.

Puggle Stuffed Toys: Cuter than the Dog

deviantART member Callykarishokka makes very cute stuffed toys that she calls puggles. I’m not sure if she came up with the name herself or if this is a type of stuffed toy, but the name certainly fits the appearance of the toys. Most of the puggles belong in what she calls Puggleformers: adorable versions of Transformers.

The Autobot logo alone is killing me with cuteness. Cally has also made puggle versions of other geeky characters for her customers.

Sadly, Cally isn’t accepting commissions as of this writing. For now we’ll have to be content with ogling her puggles. Check out Cally’s deviantART page for more pictures.

Gundam: Clothes Hanger Edition

Gundam fans, here’s a collectible you won’t want to miss. It’s a clothes hanger that conceals a model of a Gundam.

gundam clothes hanger

Our pal Francesco, over at Hobby Media (IT) spotted this bit of epicness over at last week’s Shizuoka Hobby Show (JP). Bandai is selling this along with a limited-edition STRICT-G t-shirt. When assembled, it forms a 1/200th scale replica of a Gundam RX 78-2 mech. But I’m not sure I’d want to ever take the parts off of the hanger. I think it looks pretty cool just the way it is.

gundam clothes hanger 2

If you’re lucky enough to be anywhere near Gundam Front in Odaiba, Tokyo – you might be able to find one – and you can see Giant Gundam at the same time. And if you’re anywhere else, I found a couple for sale up on eBay (without the t-shirt.)

Gundam Tempura: Deep-Fried Mecha

You know, they say everything tastes better deep-fried, and I have to agree. My wife an I always talk about how you could fry up some old shoe leather, and it would taste good. I wonder how a fried Gundam would taste. Guess I don’t have to wonder anymore…

Now I’m in the mood for tempura. Thanks a lot, Lazorz.

LEGO Gundam is Too Good to Be Official

If you spent the rest of your day putting your skull back together after seeing Gyuta K.’s LEGO Eva Gundam, brace yourself. Because as it turns out, he has an earlier project so awesome it will beam saber your brain to bits. It’s a LEGO action figure of the White Devil, the RX-78-2 Gundam.

lego gundam rx 78 2 by gyuta

Like many action figures, this LEGO Gundam has several points of articulation, making it quite poseable. And like many LEGO creations, the Gundam has swappable parts, including two different chests. One chest has a cockpit for a minifig Amuro Ray while the other transforms into the FF-X7 Core Fighter. I think I just saw parts of your cerebellum drip out of your nose.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to de-blow your minds. You see, Gyuta K. uploaded the pictures and details of his masterpiece on MOCPages way back in 2010. I know what you’re thinking – LEGO Cuusoo! Gyuta K. did submit a proposal to LEGO’s website, but it was rejected “for not following the Guidelines.” I guess it was just too badass to be mass-produced. Activate your Newtype powers and fly to Gyuta K.’s MOCPages page to see more of the action figure.
