Largest Minecraft Pixel Artwork: What Have You Done Lately Steve?

Minecraft streamer Thorlar spent 23.5 weeks manually placing one virtual block after another to complete the largest pixel art ever made in Mojang’s game. The digital illustration is made of an incomprehensible 1,128,960 blocks. Before you say “fake”, know that he streamed his progress on Twitch, so Thorlar’s got thousands of people who can attest to his feat.

The video below shows Thorlar placing the final blocks and then flying over his massive artwork, which is a replica of a Blizzard BlizzCon 2010 wallpaper featuring Deathwing, Kerrigan and Diablo.

Congrats dude! That must be so much fun to blow up.

Legend of Zelda Pixelated Swords: Anti-danger Sticks

Etsy shop Gothelf Bros Studios makes these wooden replicas of Link’s swords from The Legend of Zelda. There’s the Wooden Sword, the White Sword and the Magic Sword. Isn’t the Old Man kind of an ass for not giving the Magic Sword to Link right away? The kid’s trying to save your kingdom! Really, NPCs should be giving us everything they have as soon as we press start.

Gothelf Bros. Studios makes the swords in two sizes. The 9.5″ Wooden Sword or White Sword cost $20 (USD) each, while their 19″ versions cost $35 each. The 10.5″ Magic Sword costs $25 while its 21″ version costs $40.

Cuberox Six-screened Computer: Tycho Cubic Anomaly

Have you ever encountered a situation that made you wish you had six screens stuck together in a cube? Yeah? You live a strange life. But what’s even stranger is that there’s now such a device. Cuberox is a 4 cubic inch ARM-powered Linux computer with six monochrome 16×16 screens.

Each of the Cuberox’s screen can run a different application or show a different display. Aside from its screens, Cuberox also has a 454Mhz ARM CPU, 64MB RAM, a 4GB SD card for storage, a dustproof and waterproof construction, a 7800mAh battery, an accelerometer and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Its makers will release a companion app for iOS and Android to manage and download new Cuberox apps. Interested developers can wait for the Cuberox API or start prototyping now on node.js, since the Cuberox’s apps are written in JavaScript.

The Cuberox will come with a multipurpose stand. The stand serves as the Cuberox’s wireless charging station, but it’s also an RGB LED lamp and a Bluetooth speaker.

Pinblock Construction Toy: One Block, Infinite Possibilities

Modular construction toys like LEGO and K’nex usually have many different parts and pieces. This variety allows for beautiful and complex builds, but it can also be intimidating or tedious at times. So the makers of Pinblock came up with a simple solution: have only one type of block.

Save for their color, all Pinblock blocks are the same. Each piece has two pins, which fit into one or both of the holes under each block.

Because of the cylindrical pins and the block’s beveled edges, you can easily bend or rotate parts of your Pinblock creations. The block’s wide and flat sides also make it suited for pixel art. Here’s a preview of Pinblock courtesy of Dad Does:

DIY Oversized LED Matrix Necklace: iBling

Here’s a fun project from Al Linke, the creator of the PIXEL. He used the board that he made for his pixel art LED frame to turn an LED matrix into a comically huge and interactive jewelry, which he affectionately calls the iBling.

Al flashed a low power firmware on the PIXEL board then wired it to a 16×32 LED matrix. He used a 2,000 mAh battery as a power source, which should last up to 7 hours per use. Then he pimped out the iBling with gold spray paint, a fake gold chain and some Swarovski crystals. Like the PIXEL, Al can use his Android phone to display text or images on the iBling.

1×1 Pixel Art Stickers: Manual Interpolation

There are lots of ways to mimic pixel art in the real world, such as cross-stitch, LEGO or just plain old paint. But if you’re interested in a convenient pixel art-style medium, check out 1×1. It’s a set of colored stickers that have been pre-cut to square blocks.

Each 1×1 box contains 36 different colors each made of 400 squares, except for black, of which you’ll get 800 squares. That gives you 14,800 squares in one box. To give you a better idea of just how many stickers you’re getting, all of the artworks in the image below were made from just one 1×1 box.

1×1 stickers can be used on a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, glass and metal. They are also water-resistant, easy to remove and leave no sticky residue behind.

Pixel Waffle Iron Concept: 8-bite

We’ve seen a couple of video game-themed waffles before. If you want to make your own edible pixel art, keep an eye out for the Pixel waffle iron. It lets you create blocky patterns on your waffle.

Made by Quirky member Chunder, Pixel has a silicone mold with a 9×9 grid of squares. Each of those squares can be depressed, which in theory would also lead to a waffle with the corresponding square-shaped indentations. The great thing about the mold is that you won’t be stuck with one pattern.

Quirky is currently taking surveys to improve the commercial version of Pixel. You might want to tell them that Voxel would be a better name for it.
