Mushroom-Shaped Disco Balls: Funky Fungi

Disco balls: no dance party is complete without one. Same goes for somebody dancing on the sofa with a lampshade on their head. Usually it’s me, while my dogs hesitantly watch from the floor confused. But enough about my Friday nights at home alone, Amazon is selling these Mushroom Disco Balls (affiliate link) to liven up your living space with some funky reflective fungi!

Currently available in three different sizes (6″, 7″, and 8″ heights, the extra-small 5″ is sold out), the discoshrooms are sure to add a unique twist to any decor. Now I just need some bean bag chairs, a lava lamp, and a blacklight-reactive poster of the hookah-smoking caterpillar from Alice In Wonderland and my hippy rumpus room will finally be complete.

Did I just buy one of each size? Of course I did. Is my wife going to ask why my rumpus room always smells like hastily burned incense when she comes home from work early? Probably. Is it because I’m trying to cover the smell of marijuana? Of course not, it’s because I’m trying to cover the smell of… black magic rituals. Yes, black magic rituals – that’s what I was doing! Summoning demons and what have you.

Spray for your safety!

Two years ago as a part of a promotional strategy, Volvo released the LifePaint, a water-based, non-toxic reflective paint that seemed invisible in daylight, but the minute it gets dark, the paint catches stray lights to reflect them, thus illuminating the object.

Albedo, a Swiss-American company decided to turn campaign into life-saving product with their Albedo100 paint. The invisible paint comes in permanent, semi-permanent, and non-permanent variants, and can be used on everything from clothing to walls, to even pets (stuff like horses or reindeer that sadly become roadkill because they go unnoticed in the dark). They’re non-lethal, but you wouldn’t want to swallow the paint.

Aside from its life-saving properties, the invisible spray could even be used in a number of creative ways, creating graffiti that only shows when someone shines a light on it, or unconventional flash-photography where scenarios completely change under the influence of the reflective paint. The Semi-permanent paint washes off clothes easily, while the non-permanent paint can come off with a damp cloth.

Reflective Camera Bag Improves Photography on the Go

Many photographers carry their gear in a camera bag, and often bring along a reflector to help better illuminate their subjects. Now they can carry just one item that serves both purposes. Betabrand’s Flash Bag makes things easier. It is a messenger-style camera bag with built-in reflective panels for adding indirect light to your photos.

The bag has a large area of reflective foil under its flap. Just unhook the buckles and lift the flap for some extra light. It will bounce and concentrate light from the Sun, your flash, and any other lighting source. The bag also comes with Velcro dividers in the main compartment, so you can create custom sections to hold DSLRs, lenses, and other stuff.

It also has eight pockets, including a padded laptop pocket, two side pocket, a zippered flap pocket, patch pockets, and various inside pockets.

Turn Heads, Even When It’s Dark: Betabrand Reflective Plaid Button-Down

Betabrand Reflective Plaid Button-Down

How many close calls have you had while riding your bike at night? The unfortunate reality is that a lot of cyclists are involved in accidents when it’s dark out. This is why it’s important to install lights or decorate your bike with reflective stickers (even though it might cramp your style) if you don’t plan on wearing a reflective jacket or helmet.

However, if none of these sound appealing to you, then here’s another option: Betabrand’s Reflective Plaid Button-Down. These slim-fitted shirts have 3M retroreflective yarns woven right into them so you’ll be impossible to miss at night.

The Reflective Plaid Button-Down shirt costs $118.

Nintendo 3DS XL sports less reflective screen than its predecessor, improved parallax effect

3DS XL sports less reflective screen than its predecessor, improved parallax effect

Supersized screens may be the centerpiece of Nintendo's 3DS XL, but a new Iwata Asks interview reveals that its top display packs some new anti-glare tech too. Takashi Murakami, from the company's Mechanical Design Group, notes that each of the LCD's three glare-prone layers were specially treated to reduce reflectivity from the original 3DS' 12 percent, down to three. According to head honcho Iwata, anti-reflection coatings have been on the Big N's radar since the GameBoy Advance era, but were typically abandoned because they were too pricey. The Q&A session also confirmed something we noticed when we put the handheld through the review gauntlet -- the larger display increases the parallax effect, which translates to a deeper looking 3D experience. If your current handheld's screen bounces too much light for your liking, the XL can take its place starting August 19th in North America.
