The Book Book for the iPhone 14 Pro isn’t for everyone… but if spotted on a table, I guarantee people will want to have a second and third look. Designed to look almost like a tiny pocket-Bible, the Book Book has this wonderful vintage hardbound finish with metallic text and motifs, and even distressed leather that makes the ‘book’ look old and weathered. However, underneath its antiquated exterior lies Apple’s most cutting-edge iPhone yet.

The Book Book doubles as an iPhone cover-case as well as a wallet, giving you all your essentials in the palm of your hand. Unlike the MagSafe wallet which holds a mere 2 cards, the Book Book holds 4 as well as a few banknotes. The cards and cash stay hidden from view, and can be accessed whenever needed. Moreover, just the idea of having your iPhone disguised as an old book ensures that it’s less likely to be flicked while kept on the table.

Although a little clunky to look at and hold, the Book Book comes with a detachable design that lets you ‘unplug’ your iPhone when you need to take calls, tap for Apple Pay, or when you just want to use your phone without all that excess weight. Using a magnetic fixture, you can snap the iPhone on the case and pull it off on command, giving you an experience that lets you rightfully choose between ‘feature-laden’ and slick. Don’t want to carry all those cards with you? Just pop the iPhone off and carry it independently. The Book Book comes with its own sleek iPhone case that will still protect your smartphone from accidental drops and scratches. Rather neat, eh?

The Book Book for iPhone 14 Pro comes in two styles – a black hardbound, and a tan/brown hardbound. Both styles come with different artwork on the spine, giving them their own distinct flavor. The ‘books’ are both made from premium leather, with suede interiors to protect your phone from scratches and scuffs. The case for the iPhone is MagSafe compatible, allowing you to charge your iPhone simply by popping it out of the Book Book leather cover and snapping a MagSafe charger on the back. When you’re done charging, the case snaps back into the Book Book, completing the experience and giving you your phone and wallet all in one convenient place. The Book Book by Twelve South is available for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, as well as the 14 Pro Max.

Fantom X: The perfect minimalist wallet for materialists

If I told you to close your eyes and think of a wallet, chances are you’ll still think of the traditional leather bifold. You’re probably somewhat old-school if you did (sort of like I am), although if you thought of a bitcoin hardware wallet, you’re probably living in the year 2050. The Fantom X wallet, however, was designed to be neither old school nor wildly futuristic and speculative. It’s what I call a contemporary representation of a wallet, using new-age materials and manufacturing methods. The Fantom X comes with a robust cerakote aluminum body, a carbon fiber exterior, and a drop-dread sleek design that doesn’t leave a bulge in your back pocket the way a chunky bifold does. For good measure, it also packs RFID-blocking capabilities, and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Designer: Ansix Designs

Designed and manufactured in Canada, the Fantom X is the third and the latest in Fantom’s minimalist wallet series. It comes in 3 sizes, holding anywhere from 7 to 13 cards depending on the size you pick, and is an overall of 3 millimeters (1/8th of an inch) thicker than all those cards stacked together, resulting in a wallet that’s MUCH slimmer than traditional bifolds or even cardholders. The Fantom X achieves this thanks to a precisely machined aluminum outer body, which securely holds your cards in inside its inner chamber.

To access your cards, a lever/trigger on the top lets you fan them out of their chamber, making each card individually visible and accessible so you’re never digging around for the right card every time. Call it a combination of good design and engineering, but your cards sit snugly in their spot without ever falling out even by accident. Whether you use your Fantom X to store 3 cards or 13, your cards stay firmly put in their chamber, only exiting the wallet when you pick them out.

A flick of the lever provides instant access to all of your cards. A quick-access thumb slot is also available to access your most used card without fanning.

The cards come out only when you need them. The perfect balance between security and ease of access lies in the magic of our patented design.

However, this modern takeover doesn’t necessarily mean compromising on style for sleekness. The Fantom X’s industrial charm is contrasted by the decorative cover plates that go on the front and back of the wallet. For people looking for something strikingly unique, wooden cover plates enhance your Fantom X’s quirky appeal. For people firmly rooted in the future, a carbon fiber plate lets you accentuate your Fantom X’s ‘looking ahead’ visual appeal. The plates add an aesthetic touch to your wallet, covering them from the front and back, while the wallet RFID-protects your cards too, against digital theft. However, to make tapping your card easy at payment terminals or the metro, or while you’re checking in and out of work, the Fantom X allows you to tap the lowermost card when your wallet is fully deployed using the lever on the side.

Tested to over half a million fanning cycles, the Fantom X’s patented fanning mechanism was engineered with absolute longevity in mind.

Each wallet is machined from a solid sheet of aluminum and finished with Cerakote for unmatched corrosion, chemical, and durability performance.

Fantom X on the far right.

The Fantom X is the third in Fantom’s wallet series, boasting of a design that’s 22% smaller and 35% lighter than its predecessors. While visibly thinner than almost every regular wallet out there, the Fantom X is designed to even outlast other wallets in terms of its durability. The wallet’s body comes machined from aluminum and finished with a damage-resistant Cerakote coating, while the lever mechanism is built to take loads up to 12 kilograms or 25 lbs without breaking a sweat. Each wallet’s even secured by a lifetime guarantee on its manufacturing quality, and moreover, Fantom even revealed that the Fantom X has a unique modular-compatible design, with modules to hold cash/keys and even track your wallet coming in the summer of 2022.

A MagSafe-compatible wallet, grip, and stand in a super-slim profile

You’ll never have to stick anything on the back of your phone because this single magical wallet has everything you need and then some.

Despite all the hard work that manufacturers put into making the back of their phones look exquisite, owners still end up sticking things on the back of their devices. No, we’re not talking about skins or cases that at least add some value to the phone, whether visual or protective, but the rings, stands, and other functional accessories that sadly mar the otherwise pristine appearance of a smartphone’s rears. Some even stick a thin wallet there for cards, which brings a whole different set of problems. The worst part is that you have to choose between these different accessories because none are able to deliver all their desired functions. That is until the Magcardgrip arrived on the scene as the one phone accessory to rule them all.

Designer: Brad Park of Momostick

Click Here to Buy Now: $25 $40 (40% off). Hurry, only 48 hours left!

The “Mag” in Magcardgrip doesn’t stand for “magic,” but it could very well have been. It instead refers to Apple’s revived MagSafe technology on the iPhone, using magnets to easily attach and detach not just wireless chargers but also thin card wallets. The problem with these wallets, including Apple’s first-party flavor, is that you have to remove them in order to use the iPhone’s wireless charging capability. Plus, they also tend to slip or peel off when you’re pulling the phone out of your pocket.

In contrast, Magcardgrip uses tried and tested non-destructive adhesive to stick to the back of the phone, which creates a more stable hold. That is important considering the accessory also functions as a stand and a grip that lets you swing around your phone without worry.

Unlike typical MagSafe wallets, you can use wireless charging without having to remove the wallet, thanks to its bi-fold design. Simply flip the wallet open and connect the phone to the wireless charger or dock of your choice, including MagSafe chargers, of course. The wallet can be opened at a 90-degree angle that will let you prop up the phone in landscape orientation.

The Magcardgrip has yet another trick, one that it inherits from the same people who created the pioneering pop-out grip, the Momostick. The flexible yet strong grip sits flush against the wallet and lets you easily slide and lock it into place to form a hook-shaped opening for your finger. Alternatively, it can also be used as a stand for whatever orientation you prefer. No matter how many times you bend it, the grip will still be able to retain its flat shape when you don’t need it.

The wallet itself is made from high-quality materials, like PU leather on the outer flap that holds the cards, microfiber on the inner flap to protect your cards, and real leather for the grip to give it a luxurious finish. The wallet has room for two cards that can easily be used with tap-to-pay systems. Just flip the flap open, and that’s it! Even when folded, the wallet is so slim that it’s barely thicker than a phone’s camera bump. You’ll barely notice it’s there when lying flat on a desk, and you’ll appreciate the added grip it offers when in your hand.

The best part is that, despite the name, the Magcardgrip isn’t just exclusively for iPhones. It can work with any phone that uses the Qi wireless charging standard and has enough space on its back for a 95 x 65 mm rectangle. At only $19 a pop and with different designs to choose from, the Magcardgrip could very well be the only accessory you’ll ever need to stick on the back of your phone.

Bellroy Slim Sleeve wallet embraces a new kind of plant-based leather

Designers of all kinds just love leather, whether in theory or in practice. Genuine leather is naturally warm and soft to the touch, generating pleasant sensations on our skins and in our brains. It also ages gracefully, developing scuffs and patina that are unique to each product and largely depend on how it has been used. For all these desirable traits, leather is still controversial because of its source, and current alternatives aren’t completely free from sin either. That’s where Bellroy’s latest eco-friendly wallet comes in, making a rather bold statement that tries to push plant-based leather into a completely sustainable and circular future.

Designer: Bellroy

Simply looking at the new Bellroy Slim Sleeve “MIRUM Edition” wouldn’t clue you in that it isn’t using genuine leather. It looks and presumably feels like the real thing, especially considering the brand has built its name and its business around high-quality leather. To deviate from this path is almost heresy for Bellroy, but it admits that it also has a bigger responsibility to ensure the longevity of the planet while not compromising the quality of its products.

The problem is that the current stock of “vegan leather” carries an almost deceptive image. While it is true that it doesn’t source the material from animal skin, it actually also does damage to the environment in the long run. Most of these “pleather” materials do use some amount of plant materials, but they’re always mixed with plastics, often polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (vinyl or PVC), which are derived from petroleum. Even the very processes used to manufacture these leather alternatives can cause harm to the environment.

It’s because of this that Bellroy partnered with Natural Fiber Welding to utilize its new MIRUM material, which is 100% made from natural inputs, with no plastics or toxic chemicals involved. It utilizes the natural chemistry of these natural substances to create a material that is a dead knocker for genuine leather. Even better, the material doesn’t become plastic pollution and can be recycled or decomposed into something that will feed the plants that, in turn, will become future MIRUM leather.

The problem with many alternative leathers, including those vegan leathers, is that they are unable to faithfully recreate the look, feel, and unique traits of genuine leather. Bellroy’s use of MIRUM is pretty much a big stamp of approval for the material as enough to pass up as the real deal. The accessory brand is so confident in it that it is even offering its typical three-year warranty for a plant-based leather that might still sound experimental for many designers.

As for the wallet itself, the Bellroy Slim Sleeve MIRUM Edition includes cotton lining to protect cards and is stitched with cotton threads. There’s room for easy access to two cards, but there’s also a pull tab that reveals infrequently used plastics. The slim and small profile makes it convenient to quickly slip in and out of pockets, which you might find yourself often doing just to enjoy the feel of this guilt-free material.

This Bitcoin Wallet is as small as a credit card, but with an unbreakable metal construction

It comes complete with a QR code for easy transfers, an unbreakable design that’s water and fireproof, and due to its analog nature, it’s virtually hack-proof too.

Meet Material Bitcoin, a physical card that acts as your crypto address. Think of it as your business card, but for your crypto wallet. Material Bitcoin isn’t a hardware wallet. It doesn’t actually store any coins, it just acts as a gateway to your online wallet, thanks to what’s printed on it. The metallic card comes with your crypto address and its companion QR code printed on the front. Want to get paid in crypto? Just show your card to someone and they can scan the QR code and make the payment directly into your wallet. But the Material Bitcoin goes above and beyond that too. It lets you (the owner) log into your wallet as well, allowing you to check your funds, add funds, or withdraw money. How does it enable that? Well, each Material Bitcoin comes with your unique password printed on the back. The password sits behind a secure magnetic strip that you peel away to reveal the text underneath. It’s printed on, so a digital hacker can’t access it unless they physically have the card with them. Even if the card does get stolen, the magnetic sticker is designed to look like branding, so it won’t occur to someone to peel it away and read the password underneath – sort of like an extension of the fake rock on the porch with the key strategy. Unless someone knows exactly what they’re looking for, they won’t find it.

So what’s really the purpose of such a device? Well, for starters, it’s a combination of convenience and vanity. It’s an undeniably cool way to show people you own crypto, and to facilitate funds. Instead of sharing your address via a text message or displaying a QR code on your phone, you get to whip out a flashy metal card that people can admire. Moreover, if you don’t happen to have your phone with you (or if your phone’s discharged), this analog print makes for a great substitute.

Unlike actual hardware wallets that store your crypto offline, Material Bitcoin doesn’t quite do that. Your cash remains on a server somewhere, but its access point exists in the form of a physical card. How is it better than a hardware wallet? For starters, it’s virtually indestructible. Made from stainless steel, the card is water-resistant, fireproof, and can practically even survive taking a bullet (unlike your phone or hardware wallet). It has an undeniably cool modern-dog-tag aesthetic, and comes with the details etched onto the metal, so there’s no way the text or QR code is smudging or chipping off. In fact, the card comes with a 100-year guarantee, if that helps.

Crypto Wallet fob concept gives digital currency a physical form

Bitcoins, dogecoins, and NFTs all live exclusively in the digital realm, but designers are now pushing back to make these virtual entities more tangible and, ultimately, more humane.

We live in a world that’s increasingly becoming more reliant on digital objects. A lot of work files today are digital, and much of our entertainment and communication happens over digital lines. Although it merges with the physical realm, the Metaverse aims to make our world half digital as well. Humans, however, are not just their eyes or ears. They have even more senses that get neglected, like smell and, most importantly, touch. It’s for that reason that designers are coming up with ideas to pull these digital artifacts into the real world, including the most perplexing one of them all: cryptocurrencies.

Designers: Giorgio Mastropasqua, Ivan Vecchia

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum aren’t going to replace conventional money anytime soon, and not just because they’re still too young. They are often considered to be distinct from traditional currencies, running in their own decentralized world. More importantly, the concepts and processes behind this kind of digital currency are so alien to most people that they approach it with fear, uncertainty, doubt, and even ridicule.

Even with many transactions and purchases happening online, people still find some comfort knowing that their money has some physical representation somewhere. They also take comfort in having a physical wallet to keep their money in, and wallets have become one of the most popular expressions of product design across all ages and genders. That’s the kind of comfort and familiarity that this Auroom Crypto Wallet tries to bring for digital currency owners.

The Crypto Wallet admittedly doesn’t look like a conventional wallet or plastic card, and it really doesn’t need to since it’s not storing conventional money. That frees it to take any form that is appropriate to the digital currency or brand. In this case, the designers opted to let it resemble the iconography of the fictional Auroom logo while still leaving some room for color options.

The most eye-catching part of this “wallet” is the screen that not only informs the owner about the state of a transaction but also authorizes it. A fingerprint scanner is presumably hidden beneath, just like on some smartphones today, to authenticate the owner before a transaction is completed. Given how cryptocurrencies depend heavily on security-related technologies, such a feature would be a necessity for any crypto wallet.

The one drawback with such a brand-specific wallet is that it might not be compatible with other cryptocurrencies or brands. That would mean you’d have to carry different fobs and keys with you, almost like carrying different cards that take up more space. Then again, cryptocurrencies are still in their infancy, even after so many years, so there’s no telling yet if there will be a unified system or wallet for all of them in the future.

This minimal, modular, magnetic wallet comes with its own MagSafe attachment for your iPhone

In a classic case of designing items for Apple’s ecosystem better than Apple itself, the MagSnap Wallet is a ridiculously slim piece of EDC that was also designed to be attached to the back of your iPhone or Android, while holding up to 5 cards together. Want more out of your wallet? Well, the MagSnap Wallet’s magnetic design makes it modular too, allowing you to easily attach extra modules that let your wallet hold more cards, cash, and even EDC tools. The MagSnap Wallet has the incredible advantage of being sleek when you want, and modular/accommodating when you need. It also docks on the back of your phone for easy carrying, and thanks to its all-metal design, it’s RFID-blocking too – a feature that Apple’s own MagSafe wallet still lacks.

Designer: Dale Backus of OhSnap

The MagSnap Wallet is the third in a series of smartphone accessories designed by the folks at OhSnap. While the first two focused on giving the phone a slick, useful, multipurpose stand/grip, the MagSnap Wallet brings EDC storage to the table. Measuring a mere 5.5mm in thickness, the MagSnap Wallet is volumes thinner than any wallet you could possibly own (definitely thinner than the chunky bifold most people still carry around). However, OhSnap is quick to mention that the MagSnap Wallet isn’t MagSafe compatible (that would mean reorienting the MagSnap Wallet’s magnets to make the wallet thicker). Instead, the MagSnap Wallet comes either with a magnet-enabled iPhone case, or an adhesive MagSnap plate that can attach to practically any phone. “Our magnet array and locking pin are much stronger than MagSafe”, say the designers at OhSnap, mentioning that while Apple’s own MagSafe wallets tend to slide around when mounted on the phone, the MagSnap Wallet stays firmly put. “Our approach may be slightly less streamlined than Apple’s, but our magnetic connections are stronger, and our products are more modular and way more functional.”

With enough space to carry 5 cards, the MagSnap Wallet can either be attached to the back of your smartphone or slipped right into your pocket like a regular slim wallet. A trigger on the side of the MagSnap Wallet lets you fan the cards out, so you can easily pick which one you want, and the MagSnap Wallet can even be deployed while attached to your smartphone, letting you access your cards without taking the wallet off the phone each time.

The MagSnap Wallet, as its name suggests, also has the ability to snap on extra modules that give the wallet a storage upgrade. Each card-holding module adds an extra capacity of 5 cards, while an elastic band module lets you strap in banknotes and currency, and a tool module lets you attach a nifty karambit-style EDC pocket knife + sheath to the wallet too. While these modules can be used either independently or together, when they’re combined, they’re easily greater than the sum of their parts, making up a wallet that is feature-loaded while still measuring well under 12mm (the iPhone 13 measures 7.6mm for comparison).

Access separate card module banks with each lever.

Carry extra cards or cash with little added thickness.

The Tool Module includes a badass looking knife/bottle opener.

Each MagSnap Wallet can be bought independently or with add-on modules and the wallet even comes with optional cover-plates (made from aluminum, carbon-fiber, steel, copper, and titanium) that let you customize your wallet with the signature snap action. The MagSnap Wallet itself is machined from aluminum too, offering strength in a lightweight design, while being digitally secure too thanks to its RFID-blocking abilities. The MagSnap Wallet starts at $49 with an extra $10 for the MagSnap magnetic plate, while additional modules/upgrades range between $19 to $49 each.

This leather card-holder is made just by folding a single piece of leather – no metal rivets, stitches, or glue

With a design that relies on the simple powers of Origami and Kirigami, the One Piece Leather explores how to build products without additive or subtractive design. Armed with just one piece of stamp-cut leather (that’s probably the only subtractive process used in the entire product), designers Hou Shuo and Zhang Xiao have created a compact, minimalist leather card holder with 2 sleeves to separate multiple cards, and even a flap to close the cardholder and prevent objects from falling out.

The cardholder is perhaps the businessperson’s most important accessory. It does two main jobs, hold your own cards that you distribute to others, and hold the cards you receive from other people in the industry. Up until social media allowed people to connect to each other, the card-holder was the most powerful tool to expand your professional network. In a lot of ways, it still is an incredibly powerful piece of EDC, and the One Piece Leather is a rather nifty little product. Made from just one simple stamped piece of leather (ideally you could make it out of denim, Tyvek, canvas, or any other fabric), the One Piece Leather lets you simply fold your card-holder together. It ships flat-packed, making it rather logistically efficient, and engages you as the user, by letting you build your product (where have I heard this strategy before? Oh wait, IKEA!)

The holder’s clever design wraps around itself in a way that lets you segregate your cards by having a separate compartment for the cards you distribute versus the cards you receive… and its compact shape and size means your cardholder easily slips right into your pocket so you can carry it around wherever you go. Besides, the lack of rivets, stitches, and glue makes it pretty cost-effective (in terms of materials used/required and labor costs), and allows it to be more durable and easy to recycle too.

The One Piece Leather is a winner of the Red Dot Design Concept Award for the year 2021.

Want to flaunt your new iPhone? How about this crossbody holster that holds your phone and cards

Pockets. Sometimes you’ve got them, sometimes you don’t, sometimes you wear a jacket and leave stuff in the pockets only to discover them a year later. Or sometimes you’ve got just enough pockets that you need to put your smartphone along with your keys, leaving them vulnerable to scratches. This isn’t really a referendum on pockets, it’s sort of a scenario-building effort that makes the Moshi Crossbody Phone Holster look like a pretty sensible product to have. If you’re running low on pockets, or if you identify as a hipster who doesn’t believe in sticking to conventions, Moshi’s vegan-leather crossbody holster gives you a perfect spot to stash your phone as well as cards and cash. The holster sits diagonally around your torso and makes it much easier to access your phone and cards while on the go. It also makes you look like a bit of an avant-garde person of culture.

Designed in California (quite like the iPhone shown inside it), the Moshi Crossbody Holster is a slick little piece of EDC that carries your phone as well as your cards. Perfect when you want to head out for a quick coffee run or to meet a friend (when you don’t need to carry anything more than your phone, wallet, and keys), the Crossbody Holster serves as a pretty stylish fashion accessory that’s just as functional.

The holster comes built out of vegan leather and is wide enough to hold all sorts of phones (from the smaller ones to the larger Pro/Max/Plus ones too). A bifold-style magnetic flap on the front lets you store 3 cards for easy access, which means you don’t really need to splurge on a MagSafe wallet that may accidentally slip off your phone.

The vegan leather build is weather-resistant and abrasion-resistant. It even comes with an anti-bacterial NanoShield coating to kill germs upon contact, and is equipped with an adjustable and removable crossbody strap. For now, the Moshi Crossbody Phone Holster comes in just black (although I’d love to see spunky color variants), and like all of Moshi’s products, is backed by a 2-year warranty. However, if you buy the holster of Moshi’s website, it automatically gets enrolled in Moshi’s 10-year Global Warranty Program.

Here’s why metal wallets are much better than your traditional leather bifolds

Allow me to present an incredibly unlikely comparison that should help me make my point. Leather and animal skins were used to carry water in prehistoric times, dating all the way up until medieval times when people would still use leather hip-flasks and kegs. In the journey to store water, we discovered terracotta, glass, and even perhaps one of the most reliably robust materials yet (after plastic, obviously)… metal. Metal is a far more superior material when it comes to bottles/flasks. It’s easy to fabricate, slim, reliable, strong, doesn’t need maintenance, and it’s waterproof… for those very same reasons, a metal wallet is much more superior to a leather wallet.

Now that we got that history lesson out of the way, metal wallets/card-holders are most certainly the future, although if you’re looking for something with a slight old-timey charm, the PATINA Wallet offers the best of both worlds. With its steampunk-meets-minimal design, the PATINA comes with a slick, robust design that lets you easily carry up to 10 cards and 6 banknotes at a time. Made from a choice between brass and titanium, the PATINA Wallet uses a single sheet of hand-formed metal to store your cards and cash. Its cross-section looks almost like a paperclip, and the way the wallet’s formed lets you tuck your cards on the inside, and your banknotes on the outside, making them easy to access yet storing them securely in a wallet that has a classic appeal while being undeniably modern.

The banknotes move smoothly through the loop chambers by pulling and pushing.

Every card is easily accessible by sliding the cards with your thumbs in one direction.

Swiss handmade.

The wallet starts as a sheet of metal that’s formed in 18 steps with almost no material getting wasted in the process. Its bent-metal construction gives it inherent springiness, allowing outer and inner panels to grip onto your cards and cash securely. The wallet is produced entirely at a Switzerland-based metal workshop with designers Pascal Eberle and Tim Hophan overseeing every aspect of the process, from its design and prototyping, to its final production and quality-checking.

The name PATINA celebrates not just the wallet’s metal construction, but also its leather ancestor. Just the way leather ages over time, the brass PATINA Wallet ages too, gathering scratches and specks and oxidizing over time to become as unique as its user. While the titanium variant doesn’t gather a patina the way its brass counterpart does, it will show minute signs of use over time with constant handling, aging minimally yet gracefully.

Ultimately, designers Pascal Eberle and Tim Hophan hope that their wallet at least creates a conversation if not a complete transition from leather to metal. The brass and titanium wallets weigh 86 and 46 grams respectively (or 0.19 lbs and 0.1 lbs), and measure about the same as a bifold does. However, they’re designed to be much more robust and long-lasting, providing decades of use. The wallets are locally and fairly made, have a minimal carbon impact, and are entirely recyclable (including the packaging). Since they’re made from metal, they’re theoretically RFID-blocking too, giving you an extra layer of protection! The brass variant of the PATINA Wallet is priced at $85, while its titanium counterpart is priced at $97. The wallets ship in environmentally friendly packaging, and for an extra couple of bucks, you can even get your name or a message engraved onto the wallet’s metal body.
