How this Adidas concept shoe redefines design-for-performance

Print

What looks like an incomplete wireframe may just be the most efficiently designed and unique looking running shoe yet. Made for the 40-yard dash, Daniel Coric’s shoe is completely bespoke, fits like a glove (for your foot), and focuses on delivering on performance by wrapping around your shoe, augmenting its abilities.

Taking spike positioning details from Adidas’ Track Spike and Combine Cleat, and taking into account wind flow analysis around the foot, Daniel developed the conceptual Adidas ONE/1. The ONE/1 wraps around your shoe like a second skin, but doesn’t look like one. Designed to be made out of interconnected cylindrical channels, the ONE/1’s design looks like a loosely woven mesh that’s breathable and effective. In fact the cylindrical wraparound makes up the entire shoe. It stretches with ease, guides air around the foot efficiently while minimizing drag, and provides a secure yet spring-like quality, adding to the foot’s performance, making it better. The ONE/1 also looks nothing short of incredible. The aesthetic it explores isn’t just new and unique, it also looks incredibly hard to replicate. Designed around your foot’s 3D scans, and wrapping around them in its spectacular fashion, the ONE/1 may boost your performance, but it’ll definitely boost your confidence!

Switch on that window, will you!

elastic_light_1

Imagine having sunlight in a windowless room. That’s probably the strangest way to begin a design post, but think about it… I’ve lived in a dingy hostel room for five years of my life, so yes, sunshine was an absolute luxury. Window is a part of Siyu Lou’s Elastic products that explores a new dimension to lighting. Designed to fit in one slim, long casing, Window allows you to have a window shaped ambient light on any wall. Just mount the casing and pull down on the bar at the base and a warm, illuminated screen unrolls like a curtain, but unlike curtains that block light, this one actually illuminates! Isn’t that unusually brilliant!? Looks like a prop straight out of a sci-fi film! šŸ’”

Elastic Shoelaces Are For The Moreā€¦ Efficient Among Us

elastic-shoelace-system-640x533

Ok, fine, just call us lazy. But given the opportunity to not tie our shoelaces on a daily basis, why say no? That’s not to say we should turn to Velcro. What are we, 5? But these Elastic Shoelaces seem like a good in-between. They’re made from “a memory-fit performance elastomer’, which is BS-speak for ‘elastic material’… but they do at least look decent and give you the option to customize your fit. Whether you like your footwear tight or loose, you can pick the size for you and never have to worry about tying anything ever again; just loop through, and snap together. Each pack contains 14 of them, and costs $15.

I don’t think you should wear these as they are; they don’t have insoles or ankle support. But if I had a 3D printer I’d definitely try to make myself a pair of Sneakerbot IIs just for the heck of it. Head to Thingiverse to download the Sneakerbot II’s files. You can order Filaflex from Recreus’ online shop.

JimmyCASE Wood iPhone/Samsung Galaxy S4 Case Doubles as a Wallet

If you’re in the market for a smartphone case and looking for something a bit different than all of the others out there, you might want to check out the JimmyCASE.

jimmycase colors 620x410magnify

The JimmyCASE offers the stylish looks of a wooden case, but also the practicality of a wallet case. The case combines a silicone bumper with a genuine mahogany backing to protect your phone. Wrapped over the wood back is a stretchy piece of custom-designed elastic which can hold credit cards and money.

In my experience, I was able to stack my license and three credit cards, as well as a few dollar bills under the elastic without a problem, and with even a single credit card, it held securely. And even with the wallet loaded up, the iPhone’s camera and flash are completely unencumbered.

The sides of the case offer a nice textured grip to them, and there are openings for the charging port, speakers, headphone jack, microphone, and mute switch. Volume and power controls are hidden beneath silicone, which keeps stuff from getting into them, but still providing enough tactile feel to be usable.

Of course, the JimmyCASE is about style too, so you can choose from four different elastic fabrics at this point, including the navy blue and black striped of my review unit, gray/orange, navy/orange, and a preppy kind of pink with colorful stripes. In addition to the iPhone 5/5S variant, it’s can be had in iPhone 4, iPhone 5C and Samsung Galaxy S4 models.

The JimmyCASE is available for order now, and sells for $39(USD).

Hickies: Turning Your Kicks Into Slip-Ons

Some people love their shoelaces, while others despise them. They’re great if you have the time to painstakingly tie them into a neat bow and re-tie them in the same, careful manner every time they come undone. And if you’re the clumsy type, then you’ll have to be prepared to do the latter more times than normal.

But your shoelace-dependent footwear would be rendered useless without the laces itself – untilĀ HickiesĀ came along.

hickies shoelace replacement 1

They’re a project by Mariquel and Gaston, who both hail from Brooklyn, New York. Basically, they’re elastic bands that hook into your shoes’ lace holes, replacing shoelaces altogether. That means no more shoelaces, no more unsightly bows, and no more tripping over untied laces.

Hickies1

They also add to the whole look of your shoes as well, since it’s available in a wide array of colors. Interested? Then you’d better hurry because you’ve got just a few days to make a pledge on Kickstarter to support the project and get some Hickies for your shoes.
