The internet is filled with very believable knockoff AirPods Max headphones. Here’s how to spot a fake.

It’s difficult to say if some of these knockoffs were made to just harmlessly copy Apple, or to actually defraud customers, says YouTuber Dave2D… but the video above is a fair demonstration that for the right price, you can apparently buy a fake AirPods Max that’s looks and behaves just like the real deal. Or a warning that the crazy discount you find on eBay could actually be a fake Apple product parading around as an original.

The minute Apple announced the AirPods Max, tech YouTuber Dave2D instantly knew that there would be an absolute deluge of knockoffs. He just didn’t know that some of the knockoffs would be so good that they’d even confuse a seasoned tech reviewer like him. Dave hopped onto Alibaba and decided to pick up the cheapest and the most expensive pair of AirPods Max knockoffs he could find. The cheapest cans cost him roughly $30, while the more expensive ones retailed at $150.

The video at the top of the article shows Dave unboxing the two fakes as well as an original. With the $30 pair, the difference in quality was almost too obvious. The headphones shipped without packaging (they just came in a plastic bag) or any of the peripherals like the headphone holder or the charging cable. As convincing as the headphone looked on video, Dave said that the $30 pair felt nothing like the original. It felt obscenely cheap, with a lightweight design, a plastic body, and hinges that actually creaked when you used them. You could fool someone from a couple of feet away, but if anyone ventured too close or even decided to pick up the pair, the difference would be immediately obvious. For $30, the fake Pods didn’t sound anything like the original either.

However, things got really interesting with the second pair, which cost $150. They shipped in what anyone would assume to be original packaging, and even had every packaging detail down to the wire, including the manual on the inside. Perhaps the only difference that Dave could tell was that the print was slightly darker than the original (which was actually a darkish gray and not black). The unboxing experience was a remarkable copy of the original too. The headphones came in the same kind of case (although the stitching felt slightly cheap), with the charging cable, and even the user manual. While the headphones looked practically indistinguishable (even the woven headband looked quite similar), they still had plastic cups, but were considerably weighty (Dave suspects pieces of metal inside to add weight).

Things got even more interesting when the fake $150 AirPods Max actually triggered a notification on Dave’s iPhone when brought near. The fakes were built to be so believably real, they even managed to fool the iPhone, which set up a pairing request when the knockoffs were brought near the device… although they were listed as ProMax on the iPhone instead of the AirPods Max. Unless you were actually looking for signs that these were fake, chances are you’d probably miss them… and here’s the funny part. They sounded fairly decent too, although if you’d heard the real AirPods Max before, you’d immediately be able to tell that the $150 fakes didn’t sound as good as Apple’s $550 originals.

So how do you really spot a real from a fake? The most telltale sign is to examine and inspect the product itself. The knockoffs almost always have a plastic construction as opposed to a metal one, and if you notice anything off like bad stitching, gaps between parts, creaking hinges, or slightly off colors, treat it as an immediate red flag. The fakes also wouldn’t sound the same or have any of the features like OTA updates, Spatial Audio, Find My, etc… although if you’re just discovering those, chances are you probably already bought the fake headphones.

So how do you really make sure you don’t fall for a cheap knockoff or a well-made fake? The answer’s simple, really. Just buy your product directly from Apple instead of hunting for deals on other sites like eBay or Craigslist. Oh, and a sureshot way to avoid fraud is staying away from shady Chinese wholesale websites!

My AirPods are one of my prized Apple possessions! I use them multiple times in a day, whether’s it’s for calls, to watch videos during work breaks, or to listen to some pumped-up tunes during my evening jogs. You’ll find them around me almost all the time. I’m sure there are other AirPods addicts in the house, and for those individuals, here’s a collection of AirPods accessories that we swear by! From earrings that hold your AirPods in place to a dual-tone leather AirPods case, these nifty product designs will completely elevate and enhance your AirPods experience. They serve as the perfect sidekick to your AirPods, either by taking the best care of them, boosting their functionality, or making sure you never lose them again. These are a must-have for all AirPods fanatics!

Suhani Parekh of MISHO designed a series of earrings that keep your beloved Apple AirPods accessories in place! Named the Pebble Pods, these earrings wrap and clip around your AirPods to prevent them from falling out of your ears. Not only do they keep your AirPods in place, but they also function as earrings individually! The product comes in three versions-Pebble Pods, Minimal/Active Tall Pods, and Minimal/Active Tiny Pods. I love how they not only support your AirPods but also double up as the cutest earrings ever. They’re a stylish personal and AirPods accessory!

Elago Snapshot Apple AirPods Case with AirTag

The Snapshot case for the AirPods Pro comes with a camera-shaped design that neatly houses an AirTag inside the faux camera lens. Aside from looking like a tiny little point-and-shoot, the Snapshot protects your AirPods Pro from physical damage as well as theft. The all-silicone design helps absorb shock, while still enabling wireless charging… and the fact that you’ve now got an AirTag strapped to your AirPods Pro makes it really easy to use the Find My feature to track the exact location of your earphones.

Bullstrap’s Leather Case (codenamed Terra) for the Apple Airpods definitely gives it a lovely handcrafted appeal. The case comes with black and tan leather trims, double-stitched together with robust Nylon thread, and lined on the inside with microfiber to protect your AirPods. The Bullstrap Terra’s V-shaped design detail feels unmistakably like a popular cigarette brand, but while I’m the last person to ever endorse tobacco, it’s definitely memorable and visually striking. The V’s slightly offset though, creating a little bit of drama (which I really like, if I’m being honest), and the soft leather feels incredible to the touch.

Power1 takes portability and functionality to a new level giving you a system that’s doubly useful because it doesn’t just charge and protect for your iPhone… it charges and protects your Airpods too and ensures they are always with you and ready for use. Designed as an evolution of traditional battery cases, Power1 not only holds an extra battery but also manages your Airpods like no other system. Armed with a proprietary design, Power1 comes with two modes. One, where it charges your Airpods only (up to 30 times on a full battery), and a second mode that charges your Airpods as well as your phone, giving both gadgets full advantage of Power1’s 3000mAh internal battery. Power1 uses its intelligent power monitoring system to see which device is running low on charge, supplying power to them accordingly. Using its USB-C port, when you plug Power1 into an outlet, its priority charging feature kicks in, routing power to your phone and Airpods first before charging its own internal battery.

Antón’s redesign turns the Apple AirPods Pro case from something that looks like a ‘box of floss’ to a really classy-looking ‘chewing-gum-stick dispenser’. The rounded-box shape gets ditched for a taller and sleeker capsule shape, with lids on both ends, allowing individual earpieces to fit into each end of the case. Sure, the redesign presents some structural issues – like where would one place the Qi charging coil or the battery, but what Antón’s concept really provides is a sense of variety, while sticking to Apple’s design philosophy of building sleek products. The redesigned AirPods Pro case also fundamentally changes the UX of the AirPods. The two separate openings house the left and right earphones, and while they do that, they also hint at behavior that’s common within the AirPods user community of using just one AirPod at a time to maximize battery life.

The Air Omni’s biggest defining feature is that it comes built to dock the iPad too, which should honestly be given the same status as the iPhone, Watch, and AirPods… after all, the iPad is a mobile device too. Designed for not just charging but docking too, the Air Omni comes with a dedicated pop-up wireless charging hub for your Watch, specified wireless charging zones for your phone and AirPods, and a stand that lets you dock the iPad vertically and charge it via a cable – all while complying with Apple’s MFi charging standards. The docking zone’s unique design is truly innovative as it shapeshifts to let you alternate between docking your iPad as well as your iPhone.

Zens’ Magnetic Dual Powerbank comes with an internal 4,000 mAh battery that’s good for 1.5 full smartphone charges. The power bank is MagSafe compatible on one side too, allowing you to easily snap your iPhone to it without worrying about alignment. The other non-magnetic side is good for your AirPods, or potentially even a second smartphone (if you’re that kind of person). The power bank is perfect for all your on-the-go charging needs, although it comes with its own flip-out kickstand for when you’re working at a desk and want your phone angled towards you.

Designed as a sleeker upgrade to Genki’s Bluetooth adapter from 2018, the Genki Audio Lite is a tiny, plug-and-play Bluetooth module that fits right into your Nintendo Switch Lite, allowing you to connect Bluetooth earphones and speakers to your gaming console. The Genki Audio Lite’s tiny size adds a great deal of functionality to the already capable device. You can now use your TWS earphones, AirPods, or even the AirPods Max with it, allowing for a portable, private gaming session. The Genki Audio Lite comes with Bluetooth 5.0 and is equipped with aptX™ high fidelity low latency codecs that provide lag-free audio while you game.

The dock/stand’s choice of wood as a material gives it a classic appeal, making it look elegant even when it’s empty. The underlying tray provides a nice surface to keep your keys, USB sticks, and even AirPods; while channels running along its base you cleverly organize your charging cables. The stand’s waist provides the perfect place to stash/charge your Apple Watch, and the lightning port on the upper surface lets you easily dock your iPhone vertically, so you can charge it while you answer calls, view your calendar, attend conferences, or just browse through social media!

Elago’s AW6 cases for the AirPods help cover Apple’s musical journey from beginning to end. Designed to mimic the iPod Classic’s jog-dial, the silicone sleeve for the AirPods is a nice bookmark in time, while also acting as a protective cover for your AirPods case . Compatible with 1st and 2nd gen AirPods, the sleeve comes with a slot for the charger as well as a carabiner clip so you can hang that piece of audio-nostalgia from your belt-loop or your backpack… and that tiny hole right above the menu for the charging light just sweetens the deal!

Elago Snapshot Apple AirPods Case with AirTag

While all AirPods come with the Find My feature, Elago’s Snapshot for the Apple AirPods Pro case gives it another layer of security, letting you efficiently track it using the AirTag’s UWB chip and even locate it when your AirPods Pro is completely discharged.

It isn’t uncommon for most people to put protective covers on their AirPods cases. With their glossy plastic exterior, those cases are prone to scuffing and scratching, and the fact that they’re all-white just makes them easy to get dirty. The guys at elago figured that if you’re going to put a cover on your AirPods Pro case, you might as well add a few more features to it.

The Snapshot’s overall design pays a hat-tip to Leica’s cameras (for their clean design and their repeated collaborations with ex-Apple CDO Jony Ive). Available in Black, White, and a Sand Pink, the cases sport a red-colored faux shutter button on the top, and space for an AirTag on the front. The AirTag can be fitted forwards as well as backwards, letting you either have the Apple logo facing forwards, or flip it over to reveal the custom emoji or initials Apple allows you to etch on your AirTag. The Snapshot comes with a carabiner clip too, letting you carry your tiny little faux camera with you on your belt loop or attached to your backpack!

Dual-tone Leather AirPods Case gives your Apple TWS earbuds a beautiful aesthetic worthy of premium EDC

White may be a pretty classic color in the tech world, but there’s nothing quite as classic as one of the world’s oldest and most popular materials – Leather.

The case cover comes with a two-part design that fits on the AirPods’ top and bottom halves respectively. Its precisely engineered fit prevents it from ever falling off, and it even has hole-punches for the LED notification light and the lightning charging port at the base. If that wasn’t enough, the case supports wireless charging too, letting you easily place your AirPods on a wireless charger to juice it up when the battery’s running low.

The Terra fits both generations of the AirPods, and there’s a separate variant for the AirPods Pro too. Bullstrap even offers a limited lifetime warranty on their leather case and offers to fix/replace it if there’s any wear-and-tear or a manufacturing defect.

This new AirPods Pro case takes on a barrel shape to fit in pockets with your other EDC items!

Antón visualized an AirPods Pro case concept that holds each AirPods Pro in vertical placement, swapping out a rectangular build for a barrel-shaped case.

The new case for AirPods Pros is even wider than the previous generation of AirPods. Wedging that case into your pocket between your keys, wallet, and other EDC items is uncomfortable and makes our pockets too bulky. Iván Antón, a product and graphic designer based in Madrid, recently visualized an AirPods Pro Case concept that gives the case a vertical edge, ditching a wide body for a slim, barrel-shaped one.

The current case for AirPods Pro is about 20mm wider than the AirPods case, a substantial difference that requires a lot more room in our back pockets.  In contrast to the bulkier, horizontal AirPods Pro case, Antón’s concept case would fit nicely into any pocket even if it’s already stuffed with your house keys, wallet, and whatever else. Individual charging lights emanate from both ends of the cylindrical case to accurately indicate how much battery juice each AirPod has. Antón also visualized the AirPods Pro case in a matte black, a shade that we’ve yet to see Apple experiment with on charging cases for AirPods and AirPod Pros.

EDC items like house keys, wallets, lighters, and multi-tools fill our pockets daily. Finding the space to carry our charging cases for AirPods can get difficult considering the little room we do have. 3D visualizer and product designer Iván Antón created an AirPods Pro case that swaps out a bulky, rectangular build for a cylindrical one that can easily slide into the fullest of back pockets.

Unique double-sided MagSafe wireless charger lets you simultaneously charge your phone AND your AirPods

A phone on one side, AirPods on another, wireless charging bank sandwiched in between… Zens’ dual-sided wireless charger is the perfect on-the-go solution to your low-battery woes.

Dubbed a ‘wireless charging sandwich’ by The Verge, the Magnetic Dual Powerbank from Zens is quite literally the ‘meat’ in this equation, i.e., it brings all the flavor! The wireless power bank comes with not one, but TWO charging coils, located on either side of the device, letting you simultaneously charge two devices at a time.

The power bank is perfect for all your on-the-go charging needs, although it comes with its own flip-out kickstand for when you’re working at a desk and want your phone angled towards you. It charges via USB-C, has a moderate power output of 7.5W (it won’t fast-charge your devices), and comes with a 3-year warranty.

Elago’s products are just sensible and help you use your Apple products more efficiently. Take for instance the Wristfit, a band for your Apple Watch that lets you conveniently dock your Airpods in them too. At the time of their release, the Airpods were criticized for being too ‘easy to lose’. This spawned a wide variety of products like the Elago Airpods strap that helped you secure your expensive earpieces in place, eliminating the danger of losing them. The Wristfit is another such ‘sensible’ product that simply gives you the ability to dock your Airpods on your Apple Watch. Keeping them in a place that’s easy to access, the Wristfit secures the Watch around your wrist, and the Airpods right on the strap like a sort of holster for your earphones. Push them right in when you’re not using them and you won’t have to worry about them at all.

For people who appreciate quality, lifestyle brand VogDUO has come up with an iPhone 12 series stand and AirPods Pro case made from Genuine Italian leather. Both these accessories can be used in conjunction for a hitch-free late-night binge-watching session when you don’t want to wake up your grumpy mate with loud audio on the speakers. The Airpods Pro earbuds can be positioned right behind the iPhone 12 (in a standing position) which is great for organizing your favorite Apple accessory. The brand gives you reason enough to invest in functional accessories made from high-quality materials that not only protect your beloved gadgets from damage or scratches but also add to your style quotient in an unparalleled way.

Elago’s AW6 cases for the AirPods help cover Apple’s music journey from beginning to end. Designed to mimic the iPod Classic’s jog-dial, the silicone sleeve for the AirPods are a nice bookmark in time, while also acting as a protective cover for your AirPods case.

Twelve South has come up with their AirFly Pro. A wireless headphone adaptor, AirFly Pro is “the missing link between wireless headphones and wired headphone jacks.” It lets you connect your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or wireless headphones of any brand to devices (lacking Bluetooth connectivity) with a 3.5mm headphone jack. The dongle allows two people to listen to music or watch a movie, making it a splitter! You can finally share/watch things wirelessly with your friends if you’ll share the same taste in entertainment that is. The AirFly Pro also connects with the Nintendo Switch, enabling you to listen to the audio using your favorite wireless headphones while playing your favorite game!

Rather than storing your Airpods case in your pants, and rather than having a floss-box-shaped case that doesn’t do much, Jung’s revisited the entire product altogether. The new Airpods case houses a screen (a pretty small one) and has the ability to snap to a smartwatch. When it does, the Airpods case BECOMES the smartwatch, mirroring contents onto its own screen. The smartwatch sitting under the Airpods case comes with its own b/w screen that shows the time and date and becomes a true smartwatch only when you mount the Airpods case onto it. When mounted, you can read messages, track your fitness, and obviously listen to music. The band around your wrist not only transforms your Airpods case into something slightly more meaningful but also gives you a proper place to put it, rather than in your pockets.

Designed to ensconce your $249 AirPods Pro in a rather dapper-looking encasement, Elago’s leather case for the AirPods Pro wraps your portable earphones in 100% veggie-tanned natural cowhide leather. Stamped out of a single leather sheet, the case comes together to protect as well as differentiate your case from the bunch. Available in black, brown, burgundy, and blue, the case comes with a brass fastener and a slim brass carabiner that you can use to hang the case from your bag, belt-loop, or anywhere else. Each case even comes with a conveniently placed cutout on its base to let you plug a lightning cable in while charging. Neat!

Designed as a neat-looking carbon-fiber bodied module that attaches directly to the base of your Airpod case, the AirPodPal gives your favorite earphones wireless charging abilities… a much-needed upgrade, considering the iPhone and Apple Watch both support wireless charging. Its slender body also happens to house a 1200 mAh battery which not only extends the life of your AirPods by three whole days but also serves as an emergency power bank for your smartphone, proverbially knocking two birds with a single stone. The AirPodPal comes housed in a sturdy carbon fiber body, giving it a visual contrast when plugged into the white plastic AirPod case. The carbon fiber makes the AirPodPal both lightweight and resilient at the same time because after all, it needs to be as portable and sturdy as the AirPods themselves.

Skullcandy’s $25 ‘affordable’ TWS earphones are going to be an absolute disaster for our environment

What can you buy for $25? A great bottle of wine? Two large pizzas? A pair of TWS earphones? No, not those cheap ones off of AliBaba, I’m talking a real pair of TWS earphones from a bonafide audio company. Earlier today, Skullcandy launched Dime, a pair of budget wireless earbuds. They come with a 12-hour battery life (with the case), are IPX4 water-resistant, and cost 1/10th the price of the AirPods. At a price of $24.99, the Dime might be the cheapest pair of TWS earphones from a reputed audio brand.

“Dime breaks down all barriers formerly associated with true wireless,” says Jeff Hutchings, Skullcandy’s chief product officer, in a press release, “Offering stellar sound and unmatched simplicity at a price that makes it possible to throw a pair in every bag.” The TWS earphones come with a plastic construction and in 4 colours – Black, Gray, Green, and Blue. At their ‘throwaway’ price, the earphones really cut corners in a few places. They come with a 3.5 hour battery life, extended to half a day when charged in the case. The Dime doesn’t sport ANC (or any noise cancellation for that matter) or wireless charging. In fact, the earbuds don’t even come with touch-sensitive controls. They do, however, come with actual buttons (one on each earbud) that let you control volume, answer/reject calls, or cycle through music. Other than that, they’re just a pair of solid earphones with a secure fit and an IPX4 water-resistance rating, making them perfect for wearing while going on a jog or while at the beach. As far as sound-quality is concerned, $25 bucks will only get you so far… but given this is coming from a company as big as Skullcandy, they should sound pretty good for their price.

While this is a story about consumer-friendly innovation and how one company managed to make good TWS tech accessible to a large group of people by bringing the price down, it’s also a story of the environmental aftermath of such decisions. The earphones come made from plastic, although there’s really no indication of whether the plastic’s recycled or not (my money is on ‘No’). However, that’s just a small part of the Dime’s critique. The most important part about these earphones really is their price tag and the ‘throwaway’ culture that tag really feeds into, intentionally or unintentionally. At $25, there’s no way these earphones are designed to be repaired (repairing them may actually be more expensive), which means if and when they ever get spoilt, Skullcandy just expects you to throw out the old pair out and buy a new one instead. Given their size, and how ridiculously tiny the components within them are, chances are they’ll never be recycled for parts either… and once thrown, the Dime will just end up in a landfill or the ocean, resulting in plastic pollution, e-waste, and millions of tiny lithium-ion batteries entering our soil or waterways. Skullcandy? More like Skull-and-cross-bones…

Leaked AirPods 3 images show earbuds with curved stems, like in the Apple AirPods Pro

When you’re a trillion-dollar company with wildly successful products, it’s kinda difficult to keep things under wraps. With the global supply chain for Apple being spread across multiple countries and multiple continents, a leak from some rogue employee is bound to happen, and happened, it has! Images of the new AirPods 3 have been circulating on the Chinese social network Weibo, with the folks at GizmoChina even jumping on the gun to create renders that show what the third generation of the company’s consumer-grade TWS earbuds will look like.

At a first glance, the AirPods 3 look like a hybrid between the regular AirPods and the AirPods Pro. They feature the same earbud style as the AirPods, but come with a smaller, slightly angled stem, found in the pro-version. This relatively smaller design also translates to changes in the case design, which is definitely shorter and stouter, resembling the kind of case you’d get with the AirPods Pro. Apple’s slated to announce the AirPods 3 sometime this month. They officially called off their March event, but that hasn’t stopped the company from launching products along with press releases. Little is known about how the AirPods 3 will measure up in the specs/performance department, but credible leakers have mentioned that the earbuds may come with AirPods Pro-style active noise canceling.

Redesigned AirPods Pro Case looks sleeker and slips into your pocket more easily!

If you’ve ever felt like the AirPods Pro case looks like a dental-floss box, you’re not the only one. The AirPods debuted in 2016, rapidly rising to occupy the #1 place when it came to TWS earphones, but the case sort of feels like an afterthought. It’s clunky and doesn’t really sit well with Apple’s design philosophy of sleekness, so designer Iván Antón decided to redesign it to make it sleeker and more memorable-looking.

Sure, the redesign presents some structural issues – like where would one place the Qi charging coil, or the battery, but what Antón’s concept really provides is a sense of variety, while sticking to Apple’s design philosophy of building sleek products.

The redesigned AirPods Pro case also fundamentally changes the UX of the AirPods. The two separate openings house the left and right earphones, and while they do that, they also hint at a behavior that’s common within the AirPods user community of using just one AirPod at a time to maximize battery life. While Antón’s AirPods Pro case redesign is just a fan-made concept, it’s definitely visually interesting… primarily because it highlights that the AirPods don’t NEED to go in a boxy-looking case. Instead, the case could be a whole lot sleeker and easier on the eyes!
