This Game of Thrones Castle Isn’t Real, but It Should Be

The Game of Thrones opening credits are just begging to have someone build a real-world replica. Just imagine a wooden version of the keep at Winterfell as a model with moving pieces that you could buy. How awesome would that be? You could buy the buildings separately and put them all together.

Well, Max and Tijn Berends have made a wooden expandable castle shown in this video. Okay, not really. It’s not real. They made it look real by using Blender 3D to create a digital castle. It’s a neat trick.

Don’t get your hopes up that they will re-create the whole intro. This building took about three months to create by itself.

If you’d like to play with the model, animations and textures for yourself, you can grab the Blender 3D files here.

The Mini Blender

As far as kitchen appliances go, we have seen very little action with the hand blender. Limited innovations mean a lot of scope for improvement; maybe this is why I fancy this Mini Hand Blender concept. It’s an all-in-one deal that can be operated with one hand. The rechargeable unit can be turned on or off with the flick of the wrist. The Blender case, Blender, and mixing bowl are designed as a single unit so that the blades are kept hygienically stored and safe.

Mini Hand Blender is a 2013 iF Design award – concept design entry.

Ballistic Blender

No, it’s not a missile, but this sleek hand-held blender will totally pulverize anything in its path! A great alternative to your average bulky countertop blender, the compact design saves space but packs just as powerful of a punch. The multipurpose blade is ideal for chopping, crushing, or purée in both shallow and deep containers, and with its protective guard it’s safe to use on glass, plastic or any other common material type.

With tactile grips, a smooth, easy-to-clean finish, and accent/safety lighting it’s as practical as it is attractive.

Blend, Baby, Blend!

The FRXSH blender is refreshingly minimal compared to the many bulky, user-unfriendly designs out there. The remarkably small base is simple (even lacking a start button) and easy to use thanks to an automatic trigger mechanism that starts when the container is twisted in place. Focusing on verticality rather than beefiness, the design doesn’t take up a lot of counter space or intrude on the aesthetic of the kitchen.

Mini TARDIS really is bigger on the inside, thanks to augmented reality (video)

TARDIS

Once in a while we'd come across some cool DIY projects inspired by Doctor Who, the world's longest-running sci-fi TV show, but nothing beats this little TARDIS that would actually make you gasp out the classic line: "It's bigger on the inside!" Greg Kumparak, a former writer of sister site TechCrunch, initially built nothing more than just a convincing model of the iconic blue police box (with a functioning light at the top) by hand, but soon afterwards he wanted to somehow give it an interior as well.

By utilizing the Blender 3D creation suite (which was a first for Kumparak), Unity 3D engine and Qualcomm's Vuforia AR SDK, the result is an Android app that renders the 3D interior atop the random wave-like pattern -- visible once the door's removed -- on the TARDIS in real time (no pun intended). Once you've seen the demo video after the break, you'd probably agree that Kumparak's only one sonic screwdriver away from becoming an honorary Time Lord. For more detail on how and why this project was put together, head over to Kumparak's blog post.

Blending With Tempo

I like designer Fu Chun Wan’s thought process that music and cooking go hand in hand. When its soul comforting food cooked with love, it makes the whole process much easier and appealing. And surely aids like the Tempo Blender help a lot! The machine not only tells you how much of the ingredients you need to add, to make the perfect glass of slush or cocktail; but also blends in sync with the tempo beat belted out. In short you end up having fun and attempting tricks like how Tom Cruise performs in the movie ‘Cocktail.’
