Space-saving modular furniture designs that help you create a better everyday life!

The majority of us live in modern and urban homes, one distinguishing factor of such homes is that we have sufficient space, but (sadly) not an abundance of it. Hence space-saving becomes an important practice we need to follow. In such scenarios, modular and multifunctional furniture designs can come to our rescue! They are the space-saving solutions our modern millennial homes require. Furniture designs that cater to a number of our needs, while saving space, and also managing to be customized according to our requirements, can create an open and well-distributed home. Also with COVID-19 shutting down most of our world, we find ourselves in our homes more and more, hence it’s extremely critical to have a space wherein we can breathe, move around freely, and feel comfortable in. Here are a collection of modular furniture designs that promise to help you utilize your living space as efficiently and effectively as possible!

Finally, a foldable space-saving Herman Miller office chair. This Sayl concept chair by @bircumshawdesign takes into account the larger shift in our habits as homes have become hybrid offices and our flexible lifestyle (psst! He also keeps in mind the hours we spend as gamers or serial binge-watchers). Now more than ever we demand more from the spaces we live in, our homes are now our workplaces, our workout spaces, and also the places we socialize and relax – the pieces of furniture we choose have to be optimized for our space and be more compact without sacrificing on the functionalities or luxuries in the case of a high-end furniture design brand like Herman Miller. We need chairs that can allow us to do more and this Sayl chair lets you maximize your space whether you are working, playing games at your desk, or chilling in a VR universe. Furniture design has seen a shift since the pandemic and brands are pivoting towards making pieces that are modular, flexible, multifunctional, and above all, space-savers!

Perhaps one of the most simple and smart details I’ve ever seen on furniture, Bjarke Ballisager’s Together and Apart Table uses a sawtooth cutout pattern to turn the unassuming wooden block into a table that can adjust its height on the fly! “The primary unit consists of two wedges that interlock at a saw-toothed surface, allowing them to fit together at any of many different levels”, says Ballisager, a New York-based designer and architect. The two wedges, made out of solid white oak, can be interlocked in a variety of ways, allowing the product to function as a stool, laptop stand, or even a bedside table, thanks to its ability to match the height you need. The sawtooth design detail cleverly borrows from mechanisms like the rack and pinion, often seen in elevators, or even in the car’s steering system. What Together and Apart does is simplify them in a way that allows you to easily appreciate the mechanism’s workings while also marveling at how robust the locking is! Besides, given the sawtooth shape’s angular detail, it works in both landscape as well as portrait, allowing you to have a table that spans a variety of heights… just using two cleverly designed blocks of wood!

Chaise Renversée is a desk that can also transform into a long chair by the famous French architect Pierre-Louis Gerlier. The literal translation of Chaise Renversée is ‘chair overturned’. Since we are all cooped up in our homes, we are constantly finding ways to optimize space. Especially if you live in a city, you are likely to have everyday objects that are modular so that you have a functional space. Our current situation and the need to be flexible within a small space is exactly what inspired Gerlier to design the Chaise Renversée. It is the perfect blend of work from home and Netflix from home into one piece of modern furniture, it provides a stable table area to work and can then transform into the ‘Chaise Lounge’ when you want to relax.

Tumble is the perfect example of intuitive product design which is well-tailored for ultra-modern interiors. It is essentially a platform that serves as a chair, side table, bench seat, storage unit, bookshelf, center table, or lounger. Depending on the nature of use and the available interior space, Tumble can be put to good use with a bit of creative thinking. The furniture piece is crafted out of natural agglomerated cork and natural oak, making it good for the environment too. The use of these biodegradable materials should not let you into believing that the modular platform lacks structural strength. It can take the weight of an above-average weighing adult and the only thing you need to cautious of is to keep water away from it.

This innovative desk design uses wall bars at its core with modular attachments that let you use it as your 9-5 set up and then transform it into beast mode. “The designer wall bars are one of the most flexible wall bars in Germany. Can be installed anywhere in the room without dowels. Just stretch it between the floor and the rigid ceiling,” says the team on the no-screw assembly which is a huge USP especially if you are renting your home or move frequently. Shapely additions crafted from wood make the aesthetic wall bars a multifunctional fitness device for the whole family. You can customize it per your ceiling and your needs, in fact, the company also sells kid-friendly setups that have slides instead of workout benches! It lets you use a single corner for a home office, homeschooling, home gym, and a kid zone seamlessly without taking up an insane amount of space. On a personal note, I love that the desk height is adjustable given the Lego-style build because I can easily turn my table into a standing desk when needed!

Tea time is a beautiful ritual in Japanese culture and Hasu is a tea table inspired by that zen practice. Hasu transforms itself as the tea ritual progresses making it a contemporary piece of furniture that still pays a tribute to the process. It starts as a minimal compact structure and ends as complete furniture set for tea time. Hasu’s design allows storing an extensive tea collection while presenting it in a unique and clean manner – it is almost like you can fold or unfold the tea time ritual like origami. There is a lot of storage for all the objects needed for tea rituals and the table allows you to present them one by one during tea time, it is all on-site so everything is handy as well as neatly tucked away. The unfolding of the four upper tabletops marks the beginning of the tea time ritual. Extend the seating to four guests by simply pulling the floor chairs from the table. Even when it is not in use, it still upgrades the space as an abstract piece.

Winner of the Golden Pin Design Award, the Bien Bien Cat Tree by Cheng-Liang Wu and Chia-Wen Lin is a cat tree that also masterfully doubles up as a piece of furniture. It’s a beautiful product that caters to the needs of both your cat (s) and you, functioning as a space that can be utilized and shared by humans and felines alike. You can build the modular cat tree all by yourself, its modularity allows it to be assembled in various ways, according to personal requirements, space restrictions, and of course, the moods of your cat. There are several shelving options for you to store your precious belongings in, as well as little nooks and crannies for your pet to sleep and play around in. Multiple accessories can be attached as means of recreation for your cat, and my favorite one, hands down, is the tiny hammock!

Simple yet unusual, modular yet quirky. The ROOM Collection of furniture by Erik Olovsson and Kyuhyung Cho is like IKEA but with a twist! Fundamentally, the ROOM Collection is a series of wooden blocks with geometric negative spaces that you can store things in. The blocks are modular, which means you can stack them on top of each other to build shelves or cabinets… but what’s different about them is their storage spaces which are represented by a variety of geometric cutouts, from your conventional squares and rectangles to the unconventional circles and ellipses, to even the bizarre triangles and hexagons! The cutouts give each individual block their own unique character and invite you to figure out what they could hold. The longer cutouts work well for wine bottles and vases, while the zig-zag ones are ideal for tablets, laptops, and books. Part of the adventure is in building the furniture to suit your space, but the rest of it is in figuring out how to turn your shelf or cabinet into a canvas for all your odd objects and souvenirs!

Even though these wooden chairs might look visually similar to the IKEA ones at first glance, they actually work with indoor settings too unlike the usual patio seating. They are classier and can be used in any room/interior setting. The first wooden chair has strings that form the seat and the backrest, it may make you doubtful of comfort but the strings act like fabric and contour around your body for maximum comfort. The string tension also makes sure that you are well supported. The second chair is like a classic window transformed into a chair with one swivel motion. Because it is a smooth, singular vertical plank when closed, it is easier to stack/store. Another favorite from this furniture range is the fold-out table with storage, it is ideal for small urban apartments or for a kid-friendly room to keep things tidy and packed away.

Soufflé is a dynamic modular interior landscape capable of endless configurations for your flexible lifestyle and different needs. The bed/couch piece works for our rapidly changing world where workplace and home environments collide. Soufflé blends our work, life, and leisure modes into a singular, highly-customizable lounge system. It challenges the status quo of what workplace and domestic furniture need to be, what it should look like, and how we use it. Initially designed for the studio’s own office space, the creators envisioned a seating system that would suit a variety of commercial settings – be it a sophisticated hotel lobby, retail destination, or workplace breakout. At home, Soufflé can be pushed together into pit mode and instantly becomes the perfect spot for movie nights, reading, or naps. Fun fact: the cozy furniture piece its name from the collective noun for clouds which was key to tying all elements together in a way that felt light, approachable, and ever-changing. The Soufflé embodies these qualities through its infinite combinations, soft foam structure, and fluid design language. Due to its high degree of modularity, individual pieces can be passed onto family and friends throughout a lifetime – and without any sharp edges or hard materials, it’s 100% child friendly.

The Soufflé also grows with its user: from a bijou studio apartment in your twenties, a family home in your fifties, to a bungalow in your eighties. Whether in isolation or composed into interesting arrangements, Soufflé’s sinuous backrest offsets its rectilinear forms, catching light and casting shadows that add to its playful block module form. Gotta get Soufflé now. Pun intended!

This modular furniture system merges airport lounges with co-working space for a flexible future!

Do you know what is worse than a delayed flight when you are traveling for work? Waiting in an uncomfortable seat in the lounge which is FOR SURE not close to a charging station so you have to continue working as you race with the depleting battery levels. Airport lounges are not well-designed to incorporate comfort or productivity levels given the amount of time people spend there. Aliante is a simple solution to these issues, it is a modular furniture system that blurs the boundaries between a waiting lounge and a co-working space. This solution could be applied to any space where people tend to wait, I can see it in all the big transportation stations and maybe even malls, hospitals, or (I am going to be bold here) the DMV?!

The furniture system was developed in collaboration with Tecno S.p.A. and the aim was to investigate future work scenarios that as the team thought about the changing trends in behavior and habits. Aliante system offers a versatile working space for both individuals and teams. It features ergonomic seating options, more practical table surfaces, power outlets, and charging stations all placed in a flow that is suited to maximize comfort and productivity. Its extensible rail structure supports all the modules of the system and gives it the flexibility to be configured to any space – it can be set up in a line, as a corner setup, or even as a stand-alone system if you have a smaller space. The structural skeleton can be accessorized and expanded.

Aliante can be easily assembled into diverse arrangements, enabling architects to structure the internal spaces of airport lounges (or any other space) and define flexible coworking areas that work in the favor of those who spend time there. The concept imagines a future where the coworking environment has spread outside normal offices and has become part of public spaces such as supermarkets, banks, hotels, and transportation hubs. It would certainly help with the last-minute deadlines!

A flatpack, modular, flexible furniture system that grows with your needs without taking up space!

You know what is the most annoying thing about moving? Packing up your furniture which actually doesn’t really “pack” so you basically have to play Jenga with your pieces in the U-Haul truck. How cool would it be if we could roll up our furniture just like we roll up our clothes to save space right? Well, designer Richard Price kind of make it happen by creating Plus+ – a flat-packed furniture system that maximizes living space and minimizes storage space!

Plus+ fits your needs and comes with multiple configurations. The flexible furniture system increases its likelihood to adapt by using a snap-together frame with a joint system across the whole range. The modular design can be easily be assembled and upgraded with new features or additional accessories which enables it to grow with your needs or new spaces. Flexible furniture is the future as people shift to more flexible lifestyles that blend work and living in the same space.

The CMF has been chosen to be minimal, lightweight, and universal so it can work for homes, offices, schools, or any other setting. Using the felt-based material makes the “walls” more usable while also taking away the usual risk of scratches on furniture. It lets you easily attach accessories and doesn’t require any of that wall-nail-hammer trouble. The aluminum frames are durable and light – you can use them to create seating, walls, wardrobe, or cubicles! Plus+ is furniture designed to make your life easier with IKEA-like easy assembly, versatile functionality, and a design that enables you to use your furniture for a long time no matter where you go!

Modular furniture designs that are the space-saving solution your modern home needs!

In our modern and urban homes of today, living in a space-efficient and smart manner is vital, or else we will end up in stuffy and overcrowded home environments. An overcrowded and claustrophobic home leads to an overcrowded and claustrophobic mind. Hence, clever space management is something we need to give due importance to while planning and designing our homes. Modular and transformative furniture designs can play a huge role in this. Multifunctional pieces of furniture that cater to our various needs while saving space, can create an open and well-distributed home. Especially since we spend most of our time at home, in this COVID-19 world, we need to pay more attention to creating home spaces that are complementary to our mental health and our daily routines. And in such a situation, modular furniture designs promise to come to our rescue!

It is the perfect blend of work from home and Netflix from home into one piece of modern furniture, it provides a stable table area to work and can then transform into the ‘Chaise Lounge’ when you want to relax.

KUR!O’s Shelving Unit doesn’t just let you build a shelf, it lets you build YOUR OWN shelf the way you see fit. KUR!O’s design features a simple grid base that you wedge shelving-plates into. The plates interlock with each other, creating walls and floors for your shelf, allowing you to store all your belongings in the dedicated spaces you planned out for them! The base of the shape-shifting, infinitely customizable shelf is its underlying grid, made from sandwiched wood-fiber boards. The cuts in the grid go as much as 20mm deep, allowing you press-fit powder-coated steel panels into it. The 2mm thick panels are heavy-duty enough to take on large loads, making the KUR!O robust, despite the fact that there isn’t any screwing or gluing of parts.

The Un-Lim collection was specifically created so you can switch up the function and form of your furniture to fit your needs instead of going out to buy a new piece every time something changes. Un-Lim stands for unlimited and that truly shines through this set. Un-Lim is an ageless collection that can be molded and changed over time – think of it as redesigning your own furniture using the same pieces to create a whole new form and function! It comes with 8 different parts that you can combine to match your space and needs. Turn it from a bed to a table to a chair seamlessly. The separate modules come with a notebook that tells the story of its production timeline from the furniture’s point of view! It also includes a piece of wood from the tree that was used and a shoutout to all wood craftsmen who worked on your set.

Designed by Geoffrey Pascal, this furniture collection makes life easier for those who want to work on their bed without the risk of napping! The 3 pieces in the Grafeiphobia’s Unexpected Office range are based on the frame of a basic, slatted wooden bed. It gives a true ergonomic benefit by supporting the user to comfortably be in NASA’s Neutral Body Position which was developed to promote better health in astronauts when they live in a zero-gravity environment. The user can work in different positions that are as natural as being in bed while supporting the body’s posture as if they are working on a desk. The weight is distributed across multiple points in the body which is healthier than the seated desk position which concentrates force downwards on the lower back.

NÓMADA is a modular, multi-purpose bedside table. The team behind NÓMADA decided to attain the bedside table’s modularity through the material used during its production process by carving and integrating notches, buttons, and twisted, narrow chutes into each wooden and steel panel used for construction. The end result makes up a bedside table that appears simple and whose purpose seems singular upon first glance, but when deconstructed, the possibilities for restructuring NÓMADA are laid out in front of you, all you have to do is mix-and-match as your tabular needs guide you. NÓMADA is capable of producing twelve different configurations so that it can adapt to any of your needs or living spaces.

Inspired by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian’s composition of form and color, the Mondrian setup was made to allow a wide range of applications and blend into any interior setting. The aim was to solve three issues we experience with watching TV as we currently do – taking up space, not matching with the aesthetics, and lack of expandability. Urban apartments and single-person households need to maximize their space and should not have to choose between a large appliance and furniture when they can have both. Talking about interior aesthetics, TVs are now increasingly slimmer while the furniture remains warm and cozy – this causes a visual mismatch when the two are put together. Mondrian’s design serves both purposes with one seamless structure. TVs are now being used in many ways and need to be able to adapt to the different content it supports, not just static pre-made products.

CatYou in a Circle is a wonderful display of modular pieces that work for both humans and pets. The set includes a floor sofa and a coffee table that aims to create a relaxing space for cats and their owners to have some downtime. The hollow armrests and backrest offer cats a playground and hiding territory while the coffee table provides a place to sleep. The woven bamboo texture makes it possible for owners to see their cats even when they are hiding and play with them through its holes. The size of holes is different in different parts of the furniture to adapt to the needs of the pet as well as humans. The backrest holes are smaller to make the cats feel more secure. But holes above are bigger so that when people lean on the sofa, they can see through the backrest and find their cats underneath.

The MOON Cabinet is a timeless looking piece that is crafted from solid wood finished off with rounded corners that give it an organic form. “We got the three elements from deconstructing traditional wooden cabinets and immovable system furniture,” says award-winning furniture designer Chuang. MOON allows the user to have a flexible lifestyle as this one cabinet serves many different purposes thanks to its modular build. You can combine, assemble, and deconstruct it to fit your space or transform it from storage to seating. Just like the phases of the moon, the shape of this cabinet changes to fit different needs – in fact, it has a little circular cutout detail to symbolize that. I love that you can stack it up or take it apart to change the height of the piece as a whole.

This modular furniture system with telescopic tubing is the quickest way to redesign your interior every week!

It’s okay to admit that we’ve bought more furniture while quarantined than we probably should have – I know I’m guilty. When you’re boxed between the same four walls in the same room, bringing in new energy in the form of furniture welcomes some new excitement and change, but with the demand for furniture goods increasing, the need to produce them also increases, leading to an overall rise in greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing these increased rates of consumerism and how they negatively affect the environment, Ariyan Davoodian designed MeshTure, a modular furniture system that gives users creative control in transforming their living spaces without any new, store-bought furniture.

Davoodian’s MeshTure furniture system employs the use of steel piping, quick release clamps, and expandable elastic textiles to create triangular steel pipe structures. The triangular module’s three sides can be resized and joined together to produce different furniture designs like coffee tables and light fixtures. A single triangular module consists of six steel pipes joined together through telescopic tubing, which enables users to adjust each module’s size according to their needs. Wrapped around the surface of each module, an elastic textile adapts to each module’s changing size and provides warm, translucent lighting when outfitted as light fixtures. Three quick-release clamps fasten modules to one another and provide dependable sturdiness when using MeshTure to configure furniture pieces like tables or nightstands. While the adaptive nature of MeshTure has its benefits in mitigating the effects of irresponsible goods production, it can also offer aid in disaster relief. The ease with which MeshTure can be reshaped to meet growing needs equips users with a sense of confidence and know-how, which might prove particularly useful in environments where medical stations or makeshift tents are needed for global catastrophe aid. Overall, Davoodian envisions MeshTure to be both practically useful as is the case in ecological disasters and emotionally gratifying for consumers who might give in to their online shopping cart too quickly and often, providing a modular furniture system built to match the world’s growing demands and apparent need for reduction.

Davoodian believes that the need to fill our spaces with more and more stuff could be rooted in each of our desires to redesign our living spaces so that they align with our personal needs. In doing so, we might fill our spaces with unsustainable goods that are designed for future obsolescence, chucking one piece of furniture in the garbage to then purchase its upgrade or replacement – an endless cycle that negatively affects the environment, workers’ conditions, and our psychological welfare. In recognizing society’s obsession with instant gratification and the incredible demands of consumerism, Davoodian prioritized recyclability, authenticity, and longevity – in the designer’s own words, “MeshTure was designed to provide people [with] other possibilities; ways they could explore themselves.”

This Modular Furniture design pays homage to the Centennial Anniversary of Bauhaus School of Design

Bauhaus style is one of the most widely received and highly versatile modes of furniture design in circulation today. People around the world take such a liking to Bauhaus because not only is it visually striking, but its mutability instills a feeling of accommodation within consumers. Functionality is what brings this highly individualistic design style into the realm of mass production. In Australia, in honoring 100 years of both Bauhaus and Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, the creator behind some of the most iconic children’s building blocks, the National Gallery of Victoria commissioned Len Furniture to design a system of interchangeable and customizable Bauhaus-influenced furniture pieces.

Bauhaus is inherently captivating in its use of vibrant colors and sophisticated shapes, so Len Furniture felt inspired to create an interior furniture system that encourages workspace play, social interaction, and tranquil professionalism. The pieces of furniture in this collection change shapes and sizes according to your realized, ideal formation to fit into any given room, whether it be a cozy, small office space, or an open-plan public facility. This new Bauhaus collection is comprised of plush, knitted sofa pieces that delicately curve into one another with perfect snugness, presenting colorfully playful, but elegant and refined arrangements.

In order to lean into the design school’s geometric tendencies, Kontouris also paid homage to Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, the German-born designer who created children’s maritime toy blocks. Each one of Kontouris’s furniture pieces mimics a building block’s movement and integration. Kontouris says further on the spirit of her modular furniture system that she felt, “inspired by the thick line work in the National Gallery of Victoria’s Great Hall stained glass ceiling and the simplicity of form from Seidhoff-Buscher’s Bauhaus building blocks, I imagined somewhat mirroring the ceiling and bringing the Bauhaus graphic line work and shapes to life within the space.”

The chameleonic Bauhaus collection can be customized into several different design schemes that generate a sense of respect for a sort of skilled craftsmanship that celebrates changeability. Similar to the popular game of Tetris, one piece of furniture might look like it should attach itself to another, but then a different piece might catch your eye and also makes sense, and then another piece until you notice that the joy in constructing design patterns in the style of Bauhaus rests in the potential of endless possibilities.

This modular furniture creatively reduces waste and assembles like a giant LEGO project

We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again, flexible lifestyle is the future and it is amazing to see how product designs are pivoting to be more modular to suit that change! Furniture designs are seemingly leading this game. The Un-Lim collection was specifically created so you can switch up the function and form of your furniture to fit your needs instead of going out to buy a new piece every time something changes. Un-Lim stands for unlimited and that truly shines through this set.

“Unlimited imagination and unimaginable needs of people could be contradictory to the limitations of our planet and our capacities as human beings. The consumption patterns we have adapted have led to global warming, polluted air, soil, and water while putting pressure on people, both in working conditions and a psychological obsession to gain more without answering the real needs,” says designer Ariyan Davoodian on what inspired him to create modular furniture for every space. The aim was to reduce the unnecessary (and constant) buying by using creativity and sustainable development to meet our furniture needs that also work for our environment.

Think of it as a running LEGO project that you can actually sit on without getting poked. The designer wanted consumers to have a long-lasting relationship with the pieces that are a part of their home and use them to express their creativity while saving natural resources and reducing waste. It teaches you to find happiness with what you have instead of finding it in a new product every other year.

Modular furniture designed to adapt to the ever-changing moods of teenagers!

Adolescence tends to be a very confusing and awkward phase, where ‘personal space’ becomes of the utmost importance. Hence in an attempt to create a safe haven of sorts for teenagers, product designer Kafedra Mebeli created ‘Ladder’. Ladder is Mebeli’s concept of a collection of modular furniture for a teenager’s room, with various functions and versatility, allowing him/her to have ample space to themselves.

Drawing inspiration from an actual wooden ladder, she created twenty-four elements from solid beech, including crossbars. The crossbars are crafted from birch plywood and resemble the actual steps of a wooden ladder! Utilizing these elements, one can independently assemble diverse modules of furniture such as a cozy bed, a study table or work desk, and some much-needed storage space. The bed and the desk have been created to fit seamlessly together. The crossbars or the wooden panels can be attached to the desk or the bed, functioning as organizers, storage spaces, stationery holders as well as planters! One of the elements is a pin-board or magnetic-marker board to hold all your important little notes but also functions as a circular mirror when turned over. The bed itself has modularity bursting through its seams. The lower half of the bed can be used to store bed linens, towels or any other personal items. The headboard of the bed is detachable, so it can be easily removed or fitted according to requirements.

The entire collection has a very raw, wooden and minimalistic aesthetic. It’s simplicity, cohesiveness and bright colors make it the perfect accompaniment for the room of adolescents, who are known for their various phases! Though Ladder has been specially designed keeping in mind the needs of teenagers today, it’s extensive modularity and high functionality make it the ultimate furniture set for people of all age groups!
