DIY Mechanical PONG Table: Mag Hockey

YouTuber Daniel Perdomo and his friends made one of the coolest video game replicas of the year so far. It’s a physical replica of the classic game PONG. It’s basically a magnetic, mechanical version of air hockey.

The ball moves back and forth not due to the force from the paddles but because of a magnet below the glass surface. An arm moves the magnet along the x and y axis. A couple of Arduino microcontrollers handle how the ball behaves when it’s “hit.” It even seems like you can play against the table, or have it control both paddles for an ancient Let’s Play session. A pair of hard drive platters  were turned into rotary encoders to mimic the Atari knob controllers. The scoreboard, interactive LEDs around the playing field and graphics on the side of the table complete the homage. You can skip to 4:03 in the video below to see the finished table, or watch the whole thing to see how it all came together.

I hope it has the table makes PONG‘s blip and buzz sound effects too. Hack A Day says Daniel and his co-creators are looking for investors and business partners so they can start an arcade machine business to sell more units.

Pacapong: Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Pong in One

Certain games stand the test of time. Like Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Pong for instance. So why not mash them all together and create a game called Pacapong? Why not indeed.

pacapongzoom in

This two-player game is basically a Pac-Man maze with Pong paddles on both sides, and Space Invaders dropping down around them. You use your paddle to fling Pac-Man through the maze, between the ghosts and onto your opponents paddle. After you fling him between the paddles, you steer Pac-Man through the maze and around the ghosts. At the same time, you have to shoot the Space Invaders as they surface. Oh and there are also some stray Donkey Kong barrels. I love it. It’s pretty messed up and pretty awesome at the same time.

The game is available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows, and can be downloaded for free. You know that others are going to be mashing together old games now too and I can’t wait to see the results.

First Ever Pong Pedestrian Walk Sign Installed In Germany

ActiWait image 1

An arcade classic gets reintroduced as a novel way to entertain and help keep pedestrians safe at one German crosswalk.

Pong was one of the first arcade games to popularize the coin-operated entertainment industry and help make the likes of all arcade machines a common sight at every pizza parlor, movie theater lobby, and shopping mall across the country.

Perhaps the famed electronic table-tennis game can do the same for an invention just newly installed for official public use.

It’s called ActiWait, an interactive walk sign that allows pedestrians on either side of the crosswalk to happily partake in a round of Pong while waiting for the signal to change. Sandro Engel, Amelie Künzler and Holger Michel, three design students from Hawk University in Göttingen, Germany, Sandro Engel, unveiled the idea for the ActiWait in 2012, and were on hand to witness their invention being formally introduced in the city of Hildesheim, Germany.

Two ActiWaits were set up in Hildesheim two weeks ago, and the trio behind the invention have turned to Indiegogo to help further its development. The inventors want to improve the ActiWait to include new ways to help pedestrians from inadvertently entering the crosswalk, including other games, a news feed, or a navigation helper.

Pong Traffic Light Lets You Play With Folks On the Other Side

Pong Traffic Light

Pong. What’s not to like? It’s a fun, simple game that makes you forget your problems…until the next stoplight, that is. This would be the case if you were playing Pong on these newly-installed systems that are attached to the base of traffic lights in Germany. When the lights are green, pedestrians can play a round of Pong with folks who are on the other side of the road while they wait.

Hit the break for a video of the awesome street Pong system!

Pong for Pedestrians Now a Real Device: Why Did the Chicken Not Cross the Street?

Back in 2012 we found out about StreetPong, a concept for a fun way to encourage pedestrians to wait for the Walk sign to go off before crossing a street. Sandro Engel, Amelie Künzler and Holger Michel came up with the idea. Now Sandro and Amelie have set up their own company, Urban Invention, to develop the safety device, which they now call ActiWait.

Last November, Urban Invention installed a working prototype of ActiWait in Hildesheim, Germany. The company is currently raising funds on Indiegogo to further develop ActiWait. The company thinks of adding other distractions for pedestrians, such as news feeds, a navigation helper, traffic rules for children, surveys and even a speed dating service. Here’s the prototype in action:
