ICYMI: Segway’s plan B and flexible concrete

Today on In Case You Missed It: Segway came to Intel's Developer's Forum to show a prototype for a self-balancing scooter that is also a robot. If the public SDK works out well, Segway hopes to release a consumer version of whatever it becomes in 2...

Segway Ninebot miniPro Self-Balancing Scooter: Not Mall Cop Approved

Segway has a new personal transport vehicle that Paul Blart wouldn’t be able to use. The vehicle is called the Ninebot by Segway miniPro and it has a maximum weight capacity of 185 pounds. If you meet that weight capacity, it will haul you about 14 miles per charge at a max speed of 10 mph. I’d count on significantly less range the heavier you are and if you are going up hills.

The gadget looks like a more substantial version of all those so-called “hoverboards” on the market. However, the Segway is UL 2272 certified so it probably won’t burst into flames and burn your house down.  Is controlled using that bicycle seat looking padded knee controller, and Segway says you can learn to ride this contraption in minutes.

The Ninebot offers remote control via a mobile app, and customizable LED lighting. It also has an integrated alarm that will alert you if someone tries to steal your Ninebot, giving you the chance to go outside and get beat up in addition to being robbed.

The Ninebot is currently on Amazon selling for $999(USD) in black or white, with free Prime shipping. The miniature urban transporter will ship starting on June 29.

This Return of the Jedi Speeder Bike Started out as a Segway

If you aren’t afraid of Ewoks trying to trip you up, you too can wear your Scout Trooper armor and ride on this cool real world speeder bike.

This mod was added to a Segway personal mobility device by Youtuber Rodger Cleye. I bet he was excited about it. It was probably more than he could Endor. Get it? Really, it actually looks pretty awesome.

Can you imagine the speeder bike chase scenes you could film with these things? Me either. I don’t have all day to watch a bunch of Segway Speeder Bikes chase each other at 5 mph. I’d rather just see some Ewoks attack them and tear stuff apart with their furry little hands.

It’s a pretty fun mod though. I’m just not sure you can still call it a speeder bike.

The other CES 2016 trend: Put a screen on it

Wearables, 4K and 8K TVs, connected homes and self-driving cars may be the mainstream themes dictated by multimillion-dollar corporations. But sometimes a concept pervades all corners of CES, from plucky startups to multinationals. This year -- put a...

Segway Robot: Proto Autobot

It’s no Optimus Prime or Hot Rod, but the Segway Robot does have a vehicle mode and a robot mode, and maker Ninebot hopes it will be useful whether you’re on or off the machine.

The Segway Robot is a variant of Ninebot’s Mini Pro, which works much like the trendy self-balancing “hoverboard” transport devices. But its Intel Atom CPU, programmable robot platform, and Intel’s RealSense 3D camera system gives it a variety of additional capabilities. For starters, it has both voice and object recognition, and can be integrated to home automation systems. Ninebot also plans on making interchangeable accessories for the robot, such as a pair of arms.

Here’s a live demo of the robot from Intel’s CES presentation:

Ninebot will sell developer versions of the Segway Robot beginning on the third quarter of this year. The company will also release its Android-based SDK to help robotics enthusiasts unlock its potential. We’ll see if there’s more than meets the eye with this humble robot.
