Street Fighter Played with Pianos: Sound Fighter

Back in 2013 we saw an old piano that was turned into a controller for Doom. The Sound Fighter project had a similar goal – play Street Fighter Alpha 3 on pianos. But whereas the Doom hack simply mapped controller buttons to piano keys, Sound Fighter mapped certain moves to chords.

Software engineers Cyril and Eric of Foobarflies built the musical arcade machine. Each Sound Fighter piano has 20 piezoelectric sensors, a Raspberry Pi, an Arduino Uno and custom PCBs mediating the input from the sensors. Cyril and Eric chose to use a PlayStation 2 for Sound Fighter because they saw a number of PS2 hacks that were similar to what they wanted to do.

With the console chosen, Cyril and Eric settled on Street Fighter Alpha 3 as their game. At this point their pianos are PS2 controllers and can work with any PS2 game. But Cyril and Eric wanted their Street Fighter matches to require piano playing skills, so instead of a simple 1:1 button mapping, they mapped certain moves to chords, like so:

The ultimate goal was for skilled pianists to instantly become skilled Street Fighter players on the Sound Fighter. Even though the project is far from that point, it’s already functional and funny. Here’s the concept video for Sound Fighter:

It’s quite obvious that parts of the video were edited in, as evidenced by Ken’s multiple costume changes. But Cyril and Eric did get Sound Fighter in working order and even had people try it at the reopening of an old museum in Paris.

You can download Sound Fighter’s firmware on Cyril’s GitHub page. You should also check out Cyril and Eric’s comprehensive and humorous build log on their website.

KO Christmas with This Street Fighter Ugly Sweater

I don’t know about you, but to me Christmas is all about Street Fighter. Maybe that’s because I celebrate Festivus, and we perform feats of strength all through the day. So Street Fighter is a big part of the holiday, naturally. That said, this ugly Christmas sweater is the perfect outfit for me.

This official Capcom sweater is a real knitted sweater too – not just printed on. This Christmas, put on your sweaters and fight to the death. Ok, maybe not to the death. Just remember, the loser gets no presents and has to clean up all of the ripped wrapping paper.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good… FIGHT!

Fish Play Street Fighter: fSport

I guess this is a thing now. After seeing the hilariously boring Fish Plays Pokémon, software developer Andrew Hill wondered if he could make the same setup but for a fighting game. The result is Fish Play Street Fighter. Thankfully, it’s just as funny as its inspiration but is a billion times more exciting.

fish play street fighter by andrew hill 620x337magnify

Fish Play Street Fighter is a lot like Fish Plays Pokémon – the aquarium is divided into zones, with each zone corresponding to a command in Street Fighter. But because this is a two-player game, Andrew used color detection so that the movements of his orange goldfish Aquarius are turned into key presses for player 1, while his black goldfish Robert the Bruce sends key presses to player 2. Andrew’s arrangement of the commands leads to some tense moments, although right now Dhalsim and Blanka are just jumping.

Grab your popcorn and head to Twitch to see what our forefathers died for. The next step? Fish Play Simulator, a game where you play a goldfish in a Fish Play aquarium. Naturally that will be followed up by Fish Plays Fish Play Simulator. This is probably how the Matrix starts.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Ultra Combos in Static Camera: Super Hyper Turbo Interesting EX SD Remix

Unlike many of its predecessors, Street Fighter IV and its updated versions change the in-game camera’s perspective when characters perform their finishing moves. This is of course done to take advantage of the games’ awesome visuals. But you can view all those finishers from a zoomed out perspective – and many other angles – thanks to a Windows program called SF4 Cameraman.

Made by programmer Lullius, SF4 Cameraman lets you control the in-game camera angle and zoom in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Ultra Street Fighter IV. One of the things it can do is let you lock the camera in place, and that’s just what YouTuber moo422 did. He set the camera up in full stage view so that we could see just what the heck is going on in Ultra Combos. Utter a prayer for Dan before you click play.

Moo422 also uploaded another video without the HUD and with a few more Ultra Combos included:

Makoto is so strong that she can punch through the game’s boundaries, but Zangief is even stronger. He just plain breaks worlds. You can download SF4 Cameraman for free from Lullius’ website.

Famous Chunkies: From Hero to Many Zeroes

To raise awareness about unhealthy eating, illustrator Alex Solis started Famous Chunkies. It’s a series of caricatures of superheroes, villains and other popular characters that illustrate what they would be like if they were fat.

Flea Market Art Turned into Video Game Tapestry: Remastered Edition

French artist Gauvain Manhattan bought six old paintings from flea markets and then painstakingly wove replicas of each painting. He didn’t replicate them perfectly though. Instead he turned the real world subjects into virtual ones by adding characters and other elements from video games.

That piece with a large explosion becomes a lot funnier when you see what the painting originally looked like. Gauvain said he plans to do more of these if he finds more paintings. Check out his website for high resolution shots of the tapestries. While you’re there you might as well gawk at his irreverent Assassin’s Creed figurine.

Collect spare change and make a pledge to save at least a dollar a day the fun way with the Street Fighter Ryu Money Box. It’s basically the coolest piggy bank–or is that Ryu-bank?–that features a pixelated Ryu from Street Fighter doing what he does best. The Ryu money box is 11 centimeters tall and it would definitely look awesome on your bedside table or wherever you decide to put it. It’s available from Fancy for $16.
