1:4 Scale Transforming Robot Car: Project J-deite

We’ve featured Kenji Ishida’s progress regarding his transforming robot over the years. The first three models we saw were already coveted toys, but Kenji made it clear early on that his ultimate goal was to create a life-sized car that transforms into a humanoid robot. Kenji, Wataru Yoshizaki and Takara Tomy launched Project J-deite to see that dream through. To launch the project, they showcased the toy’s biggest version yet.

The J-deite Quarter is 1.3m tall (4.3ft) and weighs 35kg (77lb.). It has a 3kW battery that lasts up to an hour per charge. In robot mode, the J-deite Quarter can walk up to 1kph (0.62mph), grip objects and pose like a bad ass. In vehicle mode, it turns into a two-seater that can goes up to 10kph (6.2mph).

Most Functional Transformers Costume Ever

28-year-old street performer Joslyn Paige is giving kids in Ann Arbor, MI an amazing show thanks to his homemade Transformer costume. This autobot really transforms from a robot to a car. And while we’ve seen similar costumes before, this one actually drives!

Remember your childhood, and just imagine how awesome that would be for a kid to see. The suit took Paige a few months to build at a cost of between $700-$800, but seeing those kids light up makes it all totally worth it.

Paige plans to spend the summer performing in Ann Arbor, so if you are in that area, you have a good chance of seeing him in action. Make a game of it and take your kids out hunting for this guy.

1988 Ford Fiesta Becomes a Transformer

UK-based artist Hetain Patel’s first car was a 1988 Ford Fiesta that was handed down from his father. In honor of his first set of wheels, this collaboration with his father and brother turns a similar vehicle into a Transformer-like robot that is far more than meets the eye.

The car is a symbol. As he says, “Manufactured in England, this car stands as a symbol of working class Britain, a native body, albeit here a car body.” And of course, he was inspired by the Transformers, seeing this art piece as a symbol of empowerment:

Another significant influence for me and this work are Transformers, an American film and toy franchise since 1984, and a widely recognisable pop culture reference that reaches far back in Hetain’s memory. In this new sculpture, Transformers have been made manifest, physically, in a literal transformation of a Ford Fiesta car into a large-scale squatting human-like figure. For me, these ‘robots in disguise’ (as per the cartoon’s theme tune) stand as a metaphor for the other, in a fantasy world where they can transform out of a marginal position into one of empowerment.

Forget all the fancy talk of art and empowerment and all the rest. This piece of art is just plain awesome and stands on it’s own. No pun intended. It shows what a father, son, brother trio of geeks can accomplish.

ASUS reveals Transformer Book T100 with Windows 8.1 for $349, we go hands-on

ASUS reveals Transformer Book T100 with Windows 81 for $349, we go handson

ASUS already added new members to its Transformer family back at Computex, and now at IDF 2013, the company's added yet another, called the Transformer Book T100. It's got a 10.1 inch 1366 x 768 IPS display, 31Wh battery, quad-core Bay Trail-T Atom CPU and runs Windows 8.1. There are 32 ($349) and 64GB ($399) storage options augmented by one free year of ASUS's WebStorage service and a micro-SD reader, plus 2GB of RAM to keep things running smoothly. Connectivity includes micro-USB, micro-HDMI, and a single USB 3.0 port in the detachable dock. The T100 arrives in stores on October 18.

Company CEO Johnny Shih, calls the T100 a transformation of the ASUS's venerable EeePC line. You see, with the EeePC, compromises were made to hit its $399 price point. Naturally, the T100 makes no such compromises, according to Shih, and in fact, he calls it a "game changer for mobile devices designed to achieve ultimate mobility." Do we agree with his glowing assessment? Read on for our hands-on impressions.%Gallery-slideshow83873%

Takara Tomy Transforming Robot Car Prototype: Brave Robotics in Disguise

Last year Kenji Ishida and his company Brave Robotics released 10 units of his awesome remote controlled car that can transform into a mecha. Unsurprisingly, all 10 units were bought, and there’s no word on when the company will release more. But you might not have to wait for Brave Robotics, because toy maker Takara Tomy is also working on a similar toy.

Before you accuse Takara Tomy of stealing Kenji Ishida’s work, lawyer down. Frankie of Hobby Media spotted Takara Tomy’s prototype at the 2013 Tokyo Toy Show, and apparently he also found out that Takara Tomy is collaborating with Brave Robotics. So we’re all good.

Frankie also said that he saw the toy transform, but he was asked not to film it as it was still a work in progress. Just to refresh your memory, here’s what Brave Robotics’ toy looks like in action:

I think I’ll save up for Ishida’s life-size transforming car.
