BMW’s newest conceptual bike shows us zooming into the cyberpunk themed future!

The BMW Motorrad Concept Link seemed like a vision too distant, back in 2017; and now the Definition CE 04 scooter brings to life what BMW envisioned zero-emission mobility to be. This is the closest BMW is to designing an electric scooter for the production lines, as the final version is not going to much different from the Definition CE 04. Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad says, “ The BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 is the logical continuation of the electromobility strategy for urban conurbations and provides a concrete preview of what a contemporary production vehicle could look like, with which we will take two-wheel electric mobility in metropolitan areas to a new level, both technically and visually.”

The electric scooter designed for short city rides (approx. 12 km per day) is a true amalgam of urban styling and digitally connected aesthetics that will ultimately define the future. It is unlike any other scooter on the roads with a low profile, an elongated design that rises diagonally at the front to create a silhouette for a modern look. The low battery positioning gives more freedom for storing things like a helmet or a laptop bag. To give the cool ride its distinct character, there is the dual-tone –  Mineral White metallic and a matt black well complemented by the hints of orange. Interestingly, BMW Motorrad has left the drive unit, cooling ribs, single-sided swingarm, spring strut, and tooth belt exposed to give a sneak-peak into the innards. The U-shaped front LED lights and the C shaped rear lights also lend a distinct appeal to the Cyberpunk 2077 worthy look.

User-friendliness and practicality are always at the forefront for BMW Motorrad, hence, the Definition CE 04 is totally connected to the rider with a companion app and the 10.25-inch display. Even more interesting is the connected white-colored warm parka that has flexible protectors, integrated light guides in the sleeves, back, and hood for greater visibility. It also has an integrated wireless phone charger in the pocket. Isn’t that amazing, already!

As Julia Lein, Head of Rider Equipment Design at BMW Motorrad rightly explained, “We deliberately wanted to create a fashionable look that is urban yet highly functional rather than classic motorcycle clothing. We want to develop products with which you can get off the vehicle and go about your everyday business hassle-free. At the same time, the rider equipment offers the protection you are used to from BMW Motorrad and even becomes part of the vehicle communication to the outside world.” We are already imagining ourselves zooming into the future!

This Electric Scooter + Cleaning Trolley Is the Public Sanitation Solution Your Community Needs

Here’s the problem. Street cleaning is a physically demanding job that calls for longer hours compared to indoor cleaning jobs and farther distances to travel (sometimes up to 16 km per day). The work is essential yet under-appreciated. It’s unfair to expect these workers, especially if they are older, to cover these distances on foot and pull a trolley of their cleaning supplies behind them. The Cleaning Board electric scooter presents a win-win situation; it takes the strain off of the workers and allows them to cover a larger area in less time.

The Cleaning Board consists of three parts: a supply bin, kickboard, and a mobile app. The bin has two compartments: one for broom handles and dust collectors, the other for smaller items, such as masks, a fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit, water, and a hot/cold pack. When the user isn’t traveling, the kickboard folds up against the cleaning vessel, transforming the scooter into a pushable cart. Also, light strips along the board’s edges make the vehicle (and rider) more visible at night. Finally, the Cleaning Board features a companion app that would send workers information about the trashcans on their route, which would help them prioritize specific stops.

Because we are still living in a pandemic, public sanitation is a top priority for cities around the world. The Cleaning Board was created to help those workers, not necessarily their employers. It just so happens that both parties benefit from this product. By extension, the Cleaning Boards improve the quality of life for the communities that use them, because they make it easier to maintain a safe, sanitary environment.

This electric scooter cleverly one ups Lime and Bird with a better city-friendly design!

As we return back to our lives outside quarantine, there are more vehicles on the road than before as people are scared to take the risk of using public transport again. Safety must always come first, but while we adjust to the new normal we must find sustainable alternatives for short distance commutes – at least in already crowded cities – that don’t make the air quality worse when we are battling a disease that hinders our breathing. For someone who would just take a subway for two stops to run an errand we need another solution than risky public transport or expensive electric cars. That’s where ridesharing with e-scooters comes in, a concept crafted for that ‘last mile’ commute when it is too far to walk but too short to take your car out for.

While this isnt a new thing in the world of Bird and Lime, Glide’s design has one key feature that puts it above its competitors – it is foldable! Why is this so important? You must have seen the rideshare scooters strewn all over the sidewalk causing clutter but with Glide, you have to dock it when its folded so it keeps the surrounding clean and hazard-free (I have tripped over three myself!). The design concept is focused on making the experience better for users and also for non-users – it relieves the contractors of having to collect scooters strewn all across the city to charge and put back, its modified design lets you dock your phone to navigate so you never have to use one hand to steer again, and adds details that makes it possible to easily carry your bags. Along with the body, the handlebars also fold down making it one compact, lightweight, sleek tube. The deck where you stand has been extended in Glide scooters to make space for your bag and secure it with a retractable strap. It also has a a shoulder strap which makes it portable unlike other risharing e-scooters.

Another detail that makes Glide a better choice is how it is docked when not in use. The e-scooter folds up into a cylinder and clasps around the rack which locks it in place as well as charges it. To unlock the e-scooter, the user simply has to tap their card or phone on the electronic ring. Glide comes with a fully integrated smart app that also lets you see where you can pick your e-scooter from in augmented reality. The design is also looking to seamlessly blend using these scooters in combination with public transport when it is safe again, so you can use your train or bus pass to also use your scooters – this system can reduce overall costs as well as encourage more people to choose an emission-free commute. Integration of Glide with a city’s public transport system will also transform the product from a ‘last mile’ solution to a more distance-friendly option. I think my favorite part is still the clutter-free sidewalks that I wont trip on!

Mercedes-Benz’ new electric scooter has a mileage of over 3100 miles – hello zero emissions!

As we continue to move towards a cleaner and sustainable future, automakers around the world are doing their best to switch over to electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz has spent the past couple of years developing electric mobility concepts and it has finally unveiled its own fully-electric scooter which accelerates our zero-emissions journey – at least for short distances and especially for city dwellers. Longevity is at the core of this e-scooter, it uses high-quality components and materials to give the user a mileage of over 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) which allows for more freedom when it comes to micro-mobility solutions.

Mercedes-Benz has launched this EV in collaboration with a Swiss scooter specialist, Micro, to make this e-scooter sleek, strong, and efficient. It features an electric motor with a maximum 500 W power which allows the scooter to accelerate to a speed 20 km/h (permitted in Germany) while the 7.8 Ah battery gives a range of up to 25 kilometers. This lets users travel with speed, comfort, and security. The kickboard is wide enough to have plenty of room for both feel and has a non-slip coating for more stability. The e-scooter has front + rear suspension and comes with 20 cm diameter rubber wheels that effortlessly handle uneven surfaces like cobblestones making it ideal for short urban commutes.

The electric scooter also features a retractable steering column that is adjustable to the rider’s height making it a popular option in the market. The handlebars are ergonomically designed with the accelerator on the right and brake on the left as well as an integrated bell. It has a rear drum brake and a foot brake on the protective plate for added riding security. The compact scooter also includes front and rear lights along with the side reflectors so the user can ride it in traffic at any time of the day. There is a display in the center that shows the speed, battery level, and riding mode – this is also all synced to the user’s mobile app for the electric scooter.

The best part is that you can fold the Mercedes-Benz e-scooter using a simple mechanism operated with just a press of the foot. To make it more streamlined and easy to carry, the handlebars also fold down. The e-scooter weighs around 29 lbs (13.5 kg) making it portable and convenient. For scooters to be taken seriously as an alternative and planet-friendly mode of transport, they need to shine above their current status of high-tech toys and be seen as actual problem solvers. We bring you our curated collection of scooter designs that showcase powerful designs packaged as this humble two-wheeler that are sure to convert you to the two-wheeler sides!

Designed to look almost like the successor to BMW’s Concept Link from 2017, the e-scooter by Carota Design uses a similar CMF, but with leaner, lighter, and narrower forms. The matte-finish metal panels look distinctly like something from BMW’s playbook, while those orange accents around the windscreen give the e-scooter the pop of color it needs. The E-scooter’s front comes with paneling that conceals the rider’s legs, pretty emblematic of scooter designs, while the motor and battery seem to reside in the space in front of the rear wheel. Carota’s design features a cantilever seat that cuts down on the boot-storage but provides a loop on the left to secure your helmet in place. The seat naturally transforms into the E-scooters taillight, which forms a razor-thin arc that’s visible from the back as well as the sides. The headlights, on the other hand, are present in the form of edge-lit details on the front.

Mightyseed has created Vespa 98 – a conceptual electric scooter that fits with the needs of today’s world. Vespa is known to have kept it’s retro aesthetic while still being modern. “We believe looking back to history will give more insight into the future. The Vespa 98 electric concept version is a reincarnation of the original design. The concept is much more like a modern incarnation with sleek styling cues with streamlining features,” says the design team. This electric scooter showcases a bolder look compared to the original one with modern design details like the handles. The mudguard is still placed like it was in the original scooter but now it holds the LED headlight instead. One major difference is this single-seat scooter uses lidar sensors placed at the rear end to notify the rider instead of having rearview mirrors.

This is Stator, the self-balancing, fully electric, an absolute monster of a machine that you never knew you wanted, until now! Housed within Stator’s rear wheel is a Direct Drive 3 Phase Brush DC, which provides a max power of 1000W and is capable of propelling it down the road at speeds of up to 25mph! Stator’s bare-bone aesthetic expresses its designer’s, Nathan Allen’s, passion for both simple design and engineering; the motor, batteries, and inner-workings are hidden away out of sight, a single piece of tubing forms the handlebars where the inconspicuous control module is located and there is an absence of flashy, futuristic styling features.

Housing every bit of electronics and machinery into its innovative inverted triangle shape, the Pocket Rocket doesn’t have the serious demeanor of a sports bike, but why should it, right? Designed by Manuel Messmer and engineered by SOL Motors, the Pocket Rocket is clean, compact, and well thought through. It hits that sweet spot between bicycles and motorbikes known as the e-bike aesthetic, and the minimal frame could just be iconic (I’m only a slight bit concerned about the base of the V being a little low, but on city roads, the Pocket Rocket should do fine). I’ve also grown to love the name Pocket Rocket, although it obviously has some suggestive connotations.

Artem Smirnov’s idea of the next-gen Vespa surely raises some eyebrows. It looks nothing like the Vespa we see on the road today, but in all fairness, cars today look nothing like they did in the 1920s, so it seems futile to really argue that the next-gen Vespa looks radically different. It, however, does capture a few elements that answer the questions I raised in my previous paragraph. The next-gen Vespa by Artem is clearly an e-scooter. Interestingly enough though, it comes in the format of an e-bike, but still retains that hollow leg-space that scooter designs are famous for – with a rear suspension capping it off. The seat, for the most part, is cantilever, resting directly on the suspension at the back, while the Vespa logo on the front plays a double role of branding as well as being the vehicle’s headlight.

Carota’s Classic E-bike is an experiment in form, bringing a lean design to a series of bikes that are not known for their leanness. Look at the e-bike in its side view and you notice its similarities to a low-riding cruiser. The curved fuel-tank, the seat’s proximity to the rear-wheel, and an elongated silhouette, all take on a Harley Davidson-esque appearance that’s often synonymous with a loud engine that makes its presence felt… but that’s where the Classic E-bike chooses to be different. It opts for a more silent electric drivetrain, a V-twin that sits right below the seat, powered by a battery that resides within the fuel-tank form factor.

There could be a world where everyone will be zipping by on their little electric vehicles. Upholding such a vision in mind, and to meet the needs of such a world, Ekaterina Tiholova designed her version of an electric scooter, and to be honest…it looks like a flat-packed one! Tiholova’s scooter features a plain black base supported by two bulbous wheels. Its metallic grey and matte black looks are eye-catching, with a flash of lime yellow where you hold onto the handle, sealing the deal. The intricately treaded front wheel leads up to a quadrilateral-shaped handle, the scooter’s most unique feature!

Dyson has inspired many designers to adapt their style and create some amazing concepts, our recent favorite is the  Dyson Moovo – an electric scooter modeled after their signature product designs featuring clean lines. Electric scooters are soon going to become a preferred mode of transport for city commuters as they are environmentally friendly and easier on the pocket than a Tesla. Moovo’s design incorporates Dyson’s sleek and simplified aesthetics with their powerful engineering into an efficient electric scooter that you would be proud to own. The handlebar integrates the workings of a CPU that lets you control certain features of the scooter through its display like folding the handlebar or visualizing your trip’s data. The screen is anti-reflective so that you can look at the data under any light condition when outside.

Starting with the launch of the AtherGrid a series of 30 charging points strategically placed across Bengaluru, India, Ather aims at getting its system ready before its product… the Ather 450 electric scooter. With a top speed of 80km/h, an acceleration of 0-40 in 3.9 seconds, and a range of 75kms, the Ather 450 is India’s first smart electric scooter. Made for recreational riding, the scooter/segway hybrid named Z-Scooter is fun looking vehicle that can run at recommended speeds of 20km/h for as long as 35km on a single charge. Inspired by the works of Corradino D’Ascanio, the pioneer of scooters (and the man who helped Piaggio build the iconic Vespa), the Z-Scooter is a hat-tip to the evergreen scooter aesthetic. It comes with an auto-balance feature like most segways, and even sports a quirky stand on the front for resting the vehicle. Lean forward and backward to accelerate and decelerate, and turn the handles sideways to maneuver the Z-Scooter left and right, and that’s pretty much all the controls you’ll need to operate the EV.

This Japanese wooden electric scooter is designed to solve mobility issues!

Did you ever imagine an electric scooter made out of wood? I didn’t but it feels like something Geppetto would make if he was in 2020! Lucky for us we don’t have to wait for the master skills of our favorite fable characters, Japanese designer Mikiya Kobayashi has designed a conceptual wooden electric scooter that is especially aimed at those with mobility issues like the often forgotten elderly demographic.

The electric vehicle is called ILY-Ai and it actually can be counted as a trike because it has three wheels – two large ones in the front and a balancing one in the rear end. ILY-Ai is carved from solid timber and is a complete aesthetic contrast to the usual sleek, matte, futuristic electric scooters you see. The concept is developed in collaboration with Aisin’s technology as they are one of the leaders in the world of mobility and they are also well known in Japan for manufacturing automotive parts as well as lifestyle, wellness, energy-related products. Another crucial collaborator is Karimoku, Japan’s leading wooden manufacturers that helped in picking the right kind of wood so that ILY-Ai worked for indoor and outdoor spaces comfortably.

Wood adds a warm and cozy element to the design, Kobayashi has retained the natural timber’s aesthetic for an organic shape/feel. The combination of chestnut wood and aluminum match elevates the design and gives it a user-friendly touch while smoothly hiding the latest mobility technology. One important feature that was included for the elderly and for anyone with mobility issues trying to be independent is the safety sensor that automatically stops the scooter when it detects obstacles. Karimoku lends its years of wood-related study to ensure the design is as functional as its form with the clean curves and padded leather seat for comfort. This wooden scooter almost looks like our most nostalgic childhood toy comes alive with a better purpose to serve us in our adult life!

Vespa’s conceptual electric scooter combines its WWII history with modern design

I am a Vespa fan, I love the minimal design and smooth lines because it makes you feel like you can ride it easily. It isn’t bulky or too masculine, it actually is a gender-neutral scooter in my opinion and therefore loved by everyone. Fun fact: Vespa’s original design was inspired by the Cushman scooters used by the American military during WWII, but its name “Vespa” which means “wasp” in Italian was given to it by iconic aircraft manufacturer Enrico Piaggio because the scooter really looked like a wasp! In an attempt to blend a piece of history with modern design, Mightyseed has created Vespa 98 – a conceptual electric scooter that fits with the needs of today’s world.
