Wyze Band Is Smart and Maintains Health and Workouts

Wizen has just launched its Wyze Band, an Alexa-supported fitness tracker as part of an early access launch. It will be available for the public in April. The band can be worn around the wrist, and is eerily similar to Apple Watch. It allows users to control other Wyze devices. As Wyze is a smart home security company, this band can be understood as an interface that connects you with your home security system. However, the company assures that in the future, it will work with other devices as well.

What are the features of Wiyze Band?

  • The Wyze Band comes with a built-in support for Alexa. This means you can control multiple devices in your house.
  • It has a high resolution AMOLED touch screen, which ensures that your picture quality is crystal clear
  • Thanks to a 10-day battery life, you can rest assured that you will never run out of juice again
  • The tool comes with a phone finder option, which should be a blessing in when you can’t find your smartphone immediately
  • As the band focuses on fitness, it also comes with sleep and heart-tracking function. 
  • In addition, the tool is water resistant up to 50 meters for almost 10 minutes.

NASA plans to use mushrooms to build sustainable housing on Mars like this one!

Let’s accept it – climate change is the biggest design problem of our lifetime. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in, every brand from fashion to mental health and even construction is incorporating sustainable solutions in their work. In fact, a recent exhibition in Somerset, London was dedicated entirely to “the remarkable mushroom” showcasing its versatility. I am curious how mushrooms are used for construction given that that particular industry contributes to 39% of the world’s carbon footprint and we know a fun-guy (get it?!) who might have a solution.

The construction industry emits 4 times more CO2 than the aviation industry and that is enough proof they must focus on ecodesign to reduce their colossal impact especially when sustainable materials, like mycelium composites, already exist! This material is created by growing mycelium–the thread-like main body of a fungus–of certain mushroom-producing fungi on agricultural wastes. The mycelia are composed of a network of filaments called “hyphae,” which are natural binders and they also are self-adhesive to the surface they grow on. The entire process is based on biological elements that also help in upcycling waste and reducing dependency on toxic fossil fuels. Mycelium composite manufacturing can also be a catalyst in developing new bioindustries in rural areas, generating sustainable economic growth while creating new jobs.

This mushroom material is biodegradable, sustainable and a low-cost alternative to construction materials while also possessing thermal and fire-resistant properties. The Living has designed an organic 42 feet tall mycelium tower to show the potential of using mushrooms for stable structures which is just one of many such projects. Mycelium materials are also being tested for being acoustic absorber, packaging materials, and building insulation. Even NASA is currently researching using mycelium to build sustainable habitable dwellings on Mars – if we have to move into a mushroom house, might as well test it on Earth first, right? The construction industry has to act now if they want to build in/a future.

Cement alone is responsible for a massive 8% of global CO₂ emissions and the construction industry has to start using alternative materials to transition smoothly into a more sustainable future.

Energy used to heat, cool, and light buildings account for 28% of these emissions while the remaining 11% of buildings’ carbon emissions consist of those associated with construction and building materials.

Mycelium composite is formed when “mycelia” digest the nutrients from agricultural waste and bonds to the surface of the waste material by also serving as a natural self-assembling glue.

The materials are low-density, and therefore very light when compared to other construction materials while still being able to provide structural stability as shown in various architectural projects.

This Tool Turns Radishes Into Super Mario Mushrooms

Like broccoli, most kids don’t like to eat radishes. I’m an adult and I still won’t touch them. However, I may have to rethink that because the Ravanello Radish Shaper turns them into little Super Mario mushrooms.


This kitchen tool makes it easy to turn a boring radish into a Mario power-up mushroom. These mushrooms won’t give you superpowers, nor will they actually taste like mushrooms, but they will make mealtime fun.

It is easy, but it does take some work as you can see in the image here, but it beats a plain old radish anyday.


The Ravanello Radish Shaper will cost you about $12(USD). If it gets kids to eat a root vegetable, I guess it is well worth it.

3D Printed Snack Concept Grows Plants & Mushrooms: Delayed Gratification

One of the great things about 3D printing is its immediacy. Sure, it still takes a few hours to print even a small object, but it may have taken days or weeks to have that same item commissioned. Yet Chloé Rutzerveld’s concept for a 3D printed snack seems to sacrifice that advantage, because you’re supposed to wait 3 to 5 days after printing before eating it. Why? So the plants and mushrooms inside it can grow.

Chloé’s Edible Growth concept has seeds, spores and yeast embedded in agar, which is housed in a biscuit. If those materials – and the right 3D printers – become readily available as 3D printing ingredients in the future, in theory the snack will make up for the time it takes to be ready to eat with the time it would have taken to grow the plants and fungi in a garden, then harvest and transport them to a bakery to be prepared.

As Chloé says in Dezeen’s interview, she also came up with Edible Growth to show people that 3D printed food won’t just be aesthetically unappealing blobs or paste. In fact, 3D printing could lead to new flavors and combinations of natural ingredients.

The question of course is if people will want to have something that just sits there for days before they can gobble it up. Some people will probably skip the 3D printer and just gorge on the ink.

Mario Mushroom Cake Pan Cooks ‘Shrooms That Make You Grow

If you grew up in the ’80s playing the original Super Mario Bros. game on the Nintendo, you will know that gobbling the right mushrooms can make plumbers turn into a giant. ThinkGeek has a new cake pan that lets you cook your own video game mushrooms, and they too will make you grow if you eat too many. Sadly, the growth will be in circumference rather than height like the power-up ‘shrooms did for Mario.

The pan makes a quartet of 3″ diameter cup cakes. As you can see the tops of the mushroom cakes and the stems are in separate areas of the cake pan, to help ensure they come out perfectly. Whether you end up with 1up mushrooms or power-up mushrooms is all in the frosting your choose.
