This modular marble picture frame brings utility and brutalist charm to your desk

It’s a common practice to put pictures of loved ones, including furry friends, on our desks as a source of inspiration or motivation, especially when our spirits are low. Despite this ordinary occurrence, most people don’t really pay much attention to what they attach their photos to. As long as they don’t look ugly or don’t clash with the rest of your desk’s motif, people will settle for any old picture frame they can grab. Of course, the photo inside is the most important thing, but just like any other product, the things that surround it can add more value, especially if the frame can serve multiple functions at the same time. This modular picture frame concept offers that kind of value, but it also tries to enhance the design’s appeal by using a material that embodies long-lasting memories.

Designer: Burcu Nehir Tum

Marble is one of the most distinctive types of rock-like materials that we use for creating products. It is durable and long-lasting but, more importantly, is beautiful and unique thanks to the patterns that never ever repeat, at least not naturally. It leaves a lasting impression, which is a fitting metaphor for memorializing someone, something, or some memory in a photo. It’s an admittedly heavier material, but that also lends some stability to the frame.

The MEMORABLE picture frame is more than just a pretty face, though. It uses a rudimentary rail system to slide different modules on both sides of the frame to expand its utility beyond just displaying a photo. There’s a module for a short cylinder for a pen holder, a longer cylinder that can be used as a small vase, and a square spiral wire for holding small notes. The latter might be useful for sticking notes or messages from the very same loved ones shown on the photo beside it.

Given the frame only has two vertical sides, you will have to pick two of the three modules to use at a time. The advantage is that you’re not locked down to these choices and you can change things around as needed. In fact, that sliding rail system also allows two or more MEMORABLE frames to be joined together, allowing you to have as many photos as your desk can accommodate. This expands the function of the frame significantly from a simple display to an organization tool.

Although marble is a refined material, its appearance gives the photo frame a certain raw appearance that is quite appealing to the eyes and especially to the touch. It’s also a more sustainable material that can become raw material for other products after the end of its life. If there’s one drawback to the MEMORABLE’s design is that it’s rail system is fixed to only work with certain modules, such as the pen holder and vase on the left and the note holder or another frame on the right. It’s also not clear where the rails also work when the frame is set to a wide or landscape orientation, which is how some photos are taken when groups of people or scenic views are involved.

Highly repairable Fairphone 5 boasts eight years software update, gets decent hardware out of the box

The Fairphone 4 launched two years ago left a whole lot to be desired, and the sustainability-focused electronics startup from Amsterdam has now launched the next version to reignite hopes. This is the Android 13 powered Fairphone 5 modular phone which is the most repairable device out there for good reason.

The silver lining with this modern-looking device honing a translucent back panel is its whopping five years of OS support and eight years of security patches promised by the ethical company. They are striving to get that number up to 10 years. Also, there’s a 5-year warranty, so you have nothing to worry about for a long time. How much better can that get?

Pros:

  • 8 years of software support and 5 years of warranty
  • Decent hardware specification compared to predecessor
  • Made from ethically sourced material
  • Upgradable storage of up to 2TB

Cons:

  • High price tag
  • Average processor

Designer: Fairphone

Just like their select suite of other products, the Fairphone 5 is made from ethically sourced materials and is designed to be easily pairable at home. Of course, it comes with the freedom to upgrade the hardware, and we’re glad that this time around the device is more of a modern mid-range phone that ignites interest. It has a 6.46-inch OLED display with 1224×2770 resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. On the rear reside the duo of a 50MP primary lens and a 50MP ultrawide shooter. Interestingly, the selfie camera on the front inside the hole punch is also a 50MP shooter.

The number of repairable modules has been increased to 10 as now you can replace the rear camera module and the module having SIM and SD card slots. That beefed-up 4,200mAh battery with 30W charging support is user-replaceable and good for 1,000 charging cycles. Since the phone is targeting a niche set of users, don’t expect it to compete with the current flagships on the market.

It’s powered by the Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset designed specifically for industrial applications and mated to an Adreno 643L GPU and 8GB of RAM. The processor is somewhat similar to the more identifiable Snapdragon 782G in terms of specs. Out of the box, the phone comes with 256GB storage that can be upgraded to 2TB via a separate module. While modular smartphones are not particularly water-resistant, still Fairphone managed to get IP55 water and dust resistance for the device.

For someone who’s looking to buy a mid-range device that has a long-term commitment guaranteed, the Fairphone 5 is a fair recommendation. If so, the device can be pre-ordered right away with shipping in Europe promised on September 14. There are no plans for a US release, but that could change in the coming months. For a price tag of around $750, the Fairphone could just tickle your fancy with the features it has.

This innovative modular PC lets you set up workstations that adapt to your needs

Computers are now at the heart and center of our civilization, not only enabling technologies that make our lives more comfortable but also empowering people to turn their creative visions into reality. Despite these seemingly magical capabilities, computers like PCs and Macs remain almost stuck in the past, with forms and designs meant more for manufacturing efficiency than user convenience. Laptops, while portable, lock you forever into the configuration that you purchased, and although desktops offer nearly limitless upgrade potential, you are still left stuck with the box that the computer came in, which is more often than not something that ties you down to your desk. Fortunately, there are innovative and creative minds who won’t settle for anything less, and they have designed an advanced modular system that lets the PC adjust to your needs, whatever and wherever they are, rather than the other way around.

It has its own set of ports, so all you really need to do is plug in peripherals and a power cable and you’ll be up and running in no time. The built-in 5.55Wh standby battery even lets the Khadas Mind sleep for up to 5 hours without an external power source, allowing you to unplug the mini PC and be on the move in a snap.

Mind Dock

Easy Docking for Minimal Downtime – Simply slot your Mind to the multifunctional base. Mind Dock instantly supplies power and connectivity without the fuss of fiddling with an intricate tangle of cables.

Access-friendly Design – Experience enhanced security with Mind Dock’s built-in fingerprint scanner.

While the Khadas Mind is already impressive on its own, it becomes even more powerful once you start combining it with the other modules in this flexible system. Khadas’ patented Mind Link Interface drives this connection between the Khadas Mind and other modules, opening the doors to even more potential and use cases. The Mind Dock, for example, expands the selection of ports so you can connect almost any peripheral or cable you need. The dock even features a fingerprint scanner for added security, a volume dial, built-in AAC speakers, and a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port for a faster and more stable network connection, providing you with a complete desktop PC experience at only a fraction of the size.

Mind Graphics

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060Ti Graphics – Elevate your design and gaming experience by slotting your Mind into Mind Graphics — a dedicated external GPU bay hosting the formidable NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060Ti.

USB4 Supported – Mind Graphics also includes Thunderbolt 3.0 / 4.0 support, so it can be used to turbocharge not only your Mind experience but also your other devices.

The Mind Graphics module, on the other hand, transforms the Khadas Mind from a productivity tool into a creativity powerhouse. Inside the box lies a desktop-grade NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060Ti that not only makes games pop but also brings your creativity to life. Along with the Khadas Mind Link, the Mind Graphics features an electronic switch lock that firmly keeps the two pieces together, preventing accidental disconnections that could ruin your day and throw you off your groove. The graphics box doesn’t skimp on the connectivity ports either, featuring USB-C with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 support, USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 x3, two HDMI 2.0, 2.5Gbps Ethernet RJ45 ports, and an SD card reader. It also features high-quality, full-range 5W speakers so that you’ll have a complete entertainment and content creation package in a compact box.

Mind xPlay, Mind Talk & Mind Studio

The fun and creativity don’t stop there, thanks to the ingenious modular design of the Khadas Mind. The Mind xPlay, for example, will provide a portable display with a built-in battery, and dock for the Khadas Mind to fit into, letting you work and collaborate with others anywhere. The Mind Talk, on the other hand, upgrades office meetings with its array of microphones and audio hardware specially designed for this setting. Finally, the Mind Studio Display really takes your creative pursuits to the next level with an extra-large touchscreen with support for stylus input. Wherever you are and whatever computing power you need, the Khadas Mind modular workstation will be ready to open your mind to a world of possibilities.

This modular kitchen furniture system uses tiles to create a unique aesthetic for your home

When it comes to homes, the living room and the dining table are often the go-to places for interactions and socialization. These days, however, the lines separating these areas are blurring, if not totally gone, and the kitchen has also become a hub, especially for people who congregate around food and their preparation. Unfortunately, very few people actually pay attention to the appearance of kitchens, looking at them more as functional places that are hidden from the view of other people. Functionality and aesthetics aren’t mutually exclusive, however, and this modular kitchen furniture system demonstrates how careful and smart design can bring not only flexibility but even beauty to any kitchen space.

Designer: SWNA

There are plenty of beautiful kitchen designs, of course, but the vast majority of these employ elaborate furniture, luxurious materials, and the like. Some even sacrifice a bit of convenience and flexibility just to maintain appearances. Cooking tools and tableware are neatly tucked away in cabinets and shelves, hidden from view and out of immediate reach. The Dancing Grid, in contrast, lays everything out in the open and instead uses the very same objects to make the kitchen look alive and visually interesting.

The Dancing Grid is more than just a wall shelf for showing off your kitchen wares, however. Its real selling point isn’t just the modularity, but that is definitely an important element of its appeal. It’s the tasteful use of tiles, a common sight in many kitchens. The different tiles have different functions, ranging from shelving to peg boards to blank spaces that providing some “breathing room” for the arrangement. The Dancing Grid not only provides the storage functionality that homeowners need, it also delivers it in an interesting manner that adds some personal touch to your kitchen.

The In-Out tiles, on the other hand, are designed for horizontal surfaces, like kitchen tables and sinks. In fact, the design replaces the conventional metal sink with these tiles, creating a uniform appearance that conveys the image of smoothness even in corners. It still has an element of modularity where owners can create different combinations of containers and slots as their needs dictate.

Hoook tiles (not a typo) bring a different kind of flexibility. The rectilinear tiles provide a way to hang utensils or hooks as well as an add-on shelf for objects that need to stand on a flat surface. When the tile is placed upside-down, however, it creates a convenient groove to hide lighting, such as an LED strip, to add to the ambiance of the kitchen in a subtle way. Last but not least, Shaded is a purely decorative tile that gives the illusion of different hues without actually adding color, thanks to its play of light and shadows from its slightly angled form. Without going overboard and using the single concept of tiles, this modular kitchen system is able to create a more interesting atmosphere that people can gather in while still keeping kitchen functionality at its maximum.

How this modular laptop is stepping up the game in sustainability

Although probably not as numerous as smartphones, laptops are still a common sight in almost any situation that calls for a computer. Sales of PCs have even skyrocketed in the past two to three years thanks to the rush to buy new portable computers for working and studying at home. This, of course, means that we will also see a rise in the e-waste and total carbon emissions of laptops, especially as they become older and get broken over time. While smartphones and tablets are still closely guarded walled gardens, laptops have slowly started to open up their secrets, but just enough to upgrade memory and storage or replace a battery. They still lack the flexibility and freedom offered by desktop computers, but the new Framework Laptop 16 is proving that you can go big in size and power while also providing an upgradable, repairable, and sustainable laptop.

Designer: Framework

The Framework Laptop 16 is the brand’s biggest attempt at a modular laptop in more ways than one. As the name suggests, it breaks into 16-inch territory, up from its standard 13-inch models. More than that, however, it also brings in the big guns in terms of silicon, providing top-of-the-line AMD processors, including optional discrete AMD Radeon graphics. The clincher is, of course, the fact that you won’t be stuck with that GPU forever and can even remove it if you want to go light for a bit.

1

Modularity is the name of the Framework game, and the Framework Laptop 16 seems to pull all the stops with this newer and larger offering. You can, for example, remove the discrete graphics module altogether and replace it with the Expansion Bay module, letting you, not the manufacturer, decide on the configuration you want or need at a given moment. And although there isn’t any other GPU module available, it’s not hard to imagine Framework making an upgrade available in the future. After all, that’s one of the benefits of a modular design, allowing owners to not only replace broken parts but also upgrade outdated ones.

1

Being a bigger laptop means it has more space to use, which also means more configuration options that owners can change at any time, presuming they have the right modules. For example, they can choose between a centered keyboard flanked by two spacers, or an offset keyboard with a numeric keypad to the side. The number of Expansion Card slots is now 6, providing more possible combinations of input and output ports that won’t be limited to just USB-C. Of course, all these modules are available from Framework itself, so you don’t have to sweat over where to get them.

The Framework Laptop 16 is definitely not cheap, but it’s surprisingly near the same figures as non-modular laptops with similar specs. The design and engineering done on this product prove that there are very few technical restrictions on a modular laptop. It’s simply an industry practice that has existed for decades, one that will hopefully change as more manufacturers become even more aware of their effects on the environment and their responsibility in ensuring the future of the planet that their customers live on.

This minimalist sofa is easy to repair, so you can pass it on as an heirloom

Once upon a time, furniture was seen as more than just functional objects inside a house but also as heirlooms to be passed from generation to generation. That’s not only because of their ornate designs or luxurious materials but also because of the craftsmanship and longevity of these products. Mass-produced furniture these days has nothing on their ancestors, though, especially since they seem to be made to be short-lived in order to encourage buying new ones every so often. Then again, those elaborate pieces of furniture aren’t completely sustainable either, especially when they become completely useless when a single part or section gets broken. These qualities, however, don’t need to be mutually exclusive, and this simple yet stylish sofa tries to prove that by presenting a design that’s not only elegant but also long-lasting, even when parts of it need to be replaced.

Designer: Anderssen & Voll for Takt

Conventional sofas seem to be designed to be wasteful. Even those flat-packed minimalist pieces reach their ends early the moment a leg, backrest, or even cushion becomes unusable. They may come in distinct parts, but those parts are not easily replaceable when, not if, they need to be repaired or replaced completely.

The Spoke Sofa tries to provide an answer to the problem with a design that’s thoughtful, beautiful, and sustainable down to the smallest details. The parts used, for example, are made from recycled or recyclable materials that don’t compromise the product’s durability, integrity, and comfort. Of course, the processes are sustainable as well, like how the wood is treated with environment-friendly substances like pure oil or water-based lacquer that also let the surfaces develop unique patinas over time.

More importantly, every part of the Spoke Sofa is not only built to last but also built to be easily replaced. Even upholstery can be removed easily for cleaning, encouraging owners to take better care of the sofa. Replacement parts and upholstery will also be sold, so you don’t have to go out of your way to make your own wooden pieces to replace broken ones.

This sustainable sofa is designed to last almost forever, and that applies to its timeless aesthetic as well. Its minimalist appearance and functional form ensure that it will remain relevant, no matter the trend or time. And even if design tastes change, the Spoke Sofa’s modern style will remain a beautiful example of this era’s culture, turning it into an heirloom that doesn’t lose its usability, no matter how many generations it passes through.

Upload a status in real life with the new comical work fence for your desk setup

With the rapidly evolving world, corporate endeavors seem far more difficult and tedious by the day. Industrial designers have been studying corporate behavioral patterns and trying to come up with innovative interior styles comprising newer furniture and other relevant product designs. One such design has emerged that challenges the workspace aesthetics and functionality. The Work Fence is a modern-day symbolic partition that adds a silver lining to the exhausted lives of the employees in office spaces.

Designer: Changho Jeong

Condensing how everyone is struggling at their own levels, into a simple metaphor by drawing a resemblance between how construction workers work long hours under the hot sun behind the fences and the people who work vigorously all day in front of screens at commercial offices. The work fence is a parallel drawn to showcase the fast-paced tedious lives and a realization of the need for some humor.

The work fence is an artistic and dynamic solution that reimagines the way we divide and organize our work environments. Traditional office partitions have long been criticized for creating physical and psychological barriers, hindering collaboration, and stifling creativity. In contrast, the work fence seamlessly blends functionality, style, and flexibility to create a harmonious and productive workspace.

Just as the fences at the construction site signal the pedestrians to park their cars or walk below at their own risk, these work fences are based on a similar concept of notifying people about your moods or ‘status’ and signaling ‘enter at your own risk’ within your space by simply installing these fences on top of the monitor. It is an intuitive and decorative object for your desk to add some fun to your monotonous office routines. It has a comical and light-hearted approach, these fences can be customized using letter plates to create words that represent your mood or cheeky captions to lighten the day. It’s almost like a Facebook or WhatsApp status but in real life. We’re evolving in reverse!

Work Fence stands out for its sleek, minimalist design, combining clean lines with a touch of artistic elegance. The form of the work fence is inspired by the scaffolding outside construction sites. The metal plates are modular in nature and one can connect as many as they wish to complete their sentence, in which the predesigned letters can be inserted. The modular construction allows for easy customization and adaptability to various office layouts and requirements.

gif 1

Unlike traditional solid partitions, the work fence promotes a culture of flexibility and collaboration. The modular panels can be effortlessly rearranged, enabling teams to adapt their workspace to different projects and changing needs. The compact and sleek nature of the panels eliminates the boxed-in feeling often associated with cubicles and enclosed spaces.

The thoughtful design of the work fence has a significant impact on the productivity and well-being of office occupants. By fostering an open environment, the partitions promote communication and interaction between team members. The infusion of humor and vibrant patterns contribute to a more positive and stimulating atmosphere, reducing stress and boosting creativity.

The work fence is a game-changer in office design in a world where the lines between work and life are continually blending. Its unique approach to dividing up space not only improves the aesthetics of office settings but also fosters collaboration, adaptability, and well-being. Work Fence paves the way for a more dynamic, interesting, and productive workplace future by rethinking conventional office design.
