Upgrade your work from home game with this gadget that is a Fitbit for productivity!

The pandemic has changed the way we work permanently and that is a lot to adjust to overnight! Right from managing your work from home set up, ensuring that you are not disturbed during calls, probably sharing your space with others, and also doing chores – it is the several tiny things that pile up high enough to tower over your productivity which is even more fragile given the crisis we are all going through. Fun fact: an average employee gets distracted at least 56 times a day and now that we have our pets and Netflix around work, distraction counts are on the rise. TimeChi is a smart tool that can help us sail through those endless Zoom calls and Slack pings!

Productivity is a flexible skill, you can continue to develop and master it just the way you exercise and build up your fitness. A study shows that 80% of our disturbances are trivial and can be avoided with awareness. TimeChi is a compact desk gadget that takes care of one of the biggest distractions we all face – it blocks digital notifications from IM or your smartphone, time-wasting websites, and physical interruptions! That itself could save up to twp hours from my day and I actually tested it out by putting timers on my apps to see how it would reduce my screen time during work hours. It takes 11 minutes to get your focus and attention back and while it is so tempting to see what meme your friend sent or to play a 15-second game with the filter, it unknowingly makes your day longer and eventually pushes your work into your personal time which right now is more precious than ever. “The app + device combo empowers you to reach your productivity potential, facilitate meaningful team collaborations, and boost creativity with a simple click on the TimeChi device,” says the team.

TimeChi is built around the widely used Pomodoro technique and timeboxing. It puts these two tried and tested productivity hacks into one smart, connected device. I am a personal fan of the Pomodoro timer, you sit with a task for 25 minutes at a time with 5-minute breaks in the middle of each task. One cycle of a 25-minute task and a 5-minute break equals one Pomodoro, after you finish four Pomodoros you can take a 15-minute break. TimeChi uses a bright traffic light display that makes it clear even in your peripheral vision or to those sharing your space that you’re in the middle of a deep-work session, this also helps set those focus boundaries during work hours and tells them when you will be taking a break so they can come back. The personal gadget is also fully customizable, it works for students and professionals to set the focus periods and track their performance on the personalized TimeChi dashboard. We can all use a digital timeout after the last few months of digital overload!

Exam times needs this pen with timer!

Exams are tense and often stressful events; the silence of the hall paired with the frantic sound of scribbling pens on paper can all add up to becoming a fear-inducing experience. These time-sensitive tasks often require you to work right up until the very last second, so efficiency is key. So what you don’t want to be doing is checking your watch every five minutes and wasting valuable time. This is where Timer Cap comes in.

Timer Cap has been designed to come in two forms, a ballpoint pen and a retro-fit addition for pencils. It requires very little interaction with its user only having to set the timer at the start of the exam. Vibrant colors visually indicate the time remaining and once this time is up the user will be alerted with a little ‘clang’.

Designer: Jade Jinwon Heo

“You can manage the exam time and practice taking the exam thoroughly, since you can control time in the timer of Timer Cap, using the spring which is pushed into again, when you pull it upwards manually. Besides, the color of the timer changes every twenty minutes so you can check the time left, visually,” Heo explained.

“Timer Cap consists of two kinds: a cap type to put into a pencil, and a ball-point pen type, so you can use it appropriately, depending on writing supplies to use for the exam or exam practice,” Heo continued.

This 3D printed hourglass should get a design award!

The beauty of the sand-hourglass is the way you see the sand travel grain by grain downwards. It’s pretty, no doubt, but from an experience level, it gives you the basic idea of a minute, and nothing more. You can’t count down the minute because the sand’s flow is continuous, not broken up into seconds, and more importantly, if you take your eyes off the hourglass, there’s no way of knowing when the minute is up. It’s purely a visual experience.

The Chrolo, on the other hand, is a sheer work of art and a feat of engineering. It also plugs all the experience gaps you’d face with the sand-vial hourglass. The 3D printed structure provides a path for a ball-bearing to slide down, step by step, utilizing gravity just like the sand-hourglass does… but each individual slide accounts for a single second (so there are 59 slides in total), and every time the ball-bearing drops from one slide to another, it makes a tick sound that mimics a clock, so you can count down the seconds as you go. It also means you don’t need to keep your eye on the hourglass as it operates.

The ball-bearing takes exactly 60 seconds to complete its downward journey, indicating the completion of a full minute. It furthers its audio-visual experience with a brass ring at the bottom, which the ball collides against after 59 ticks. The collision results in a satisfying ‘ting’sound, indicating the completion of a minute. If you want to add more minutes, just repeat the process by adding another ball bearing at the top the minute you hear the ‘ting’!

The Chrolo’s intricate, engineered-to-precision design is made entirely through STL 3D-printing (where a resin is cured using UV light), which ensures that each part is built accurately, without the need to sand, prime, or paint the product afterward. Its spiral-staircase shape comes after multiple iterations (initial concepts looked like a regular flight of steps). The spiral staircase was arrived at after multiple iterations. It occupies a smaller amount of space while also giving the ball-bearing a literal journey to go through. It’s fun to watch the ball-bearing go to and fro, almost like a pendulum, on each stair before dropping with a satisfying ‘tick’ sound. I can’t think of a more beautiful, multisensorial, and apt way to indicate the passing of a minute!

Game Boy Digital Timer: Watch and (No) Game

This Game Boy timer will come in handy in the kitchen. I could have used one of these back in the day, to let me know when to change the batteries in my actual Game Boy. It could have alerted me every ten minutes or so.

It only plays one game and that is keeping track of time. When is the meat loaf going to be done? I don’t know, check the Game Boy. Meat loaf again? This Game Boy-inspired digital timer has a magnet on back for sticking it on your fridge. Use it to time your meals, keep track of how long the kids have been playing their Nintendo 3DS, or just have it to remind you of your old portable.

It is only $17.99(USD) from Amazon.

Ah, Hourglass Once Again

There seems to be an extreme fascination for hourglass timers, especially of the digital kind. The Dynamic Counterdown Timer is one of them; it’s meant to be used at outdoor sports arenas, representing game-time countdown in a more dynamic way. You have to agree, that the idea although not very original, has a very rustic appeal to it. What do you think?

DIY Toothbrush Timer: Brush-type Motor

Tinkerer Steve Hoefer found a way to put those kitschy chattering teeth toy to good use. With the help of a 555 timer chip, a servo and some soldering, you can turn the toy into a timer that automatically counts down as you start brushing.

When you remove your toothbrush from the Toothy Toothbrush Timer’s toothbrush holder, a switch activates the chattering teeth. When the teeth stop chomping, you’re done brushing. That’s all there is to it. Steve set his timer at 2 minutes and 10 seconds, but you can of course set your own time.
