This Bluetooth speaker and wireless charger is like a piece of sculptural art

Wireless speakers have been on the rise in the past few years, especially with the mass exodus of headphone jacks from smartphones. Because of that, manufacturers have started playing with different designs, going from traditional boxes to cylinders to all sorts of shapes and forms. In many cases, like smart home speakers, these audio devices have taken on more artistic forms, functioning both as tech equipment as well as room decor. Some even hide in plain sight as picture frames or sculptures. This wireless speaker concept is cut from the same cloth, providing a beautiful art piece that is both a Bluetooth speaker you can carry around as well as a wireless charging pad for your devices.

Designer: Jong Han Lee

Most portable speakers come in rectangular or cylindrical forms. These, after all, are the easiest to produce and the most convenient to put in any location. Ever since their popularity exploded, however, designers have started to go beyond the norm and explore different styles and aesthetics. Some are inspired by nature, while others try to pay homage to art movements of the past. All of these with the goal of creating a product that isn’t just functional but also pleasing to look at in any space.

DROPS, as its name would imply, is inspired by the gentle ripples created when something small falls on a larger body of water, represented by the concentric circles in the center of the base. Just like how the water eventually settles down and returns to its calm state, the rest of the base outside the ripples is flat and smooth. Coincidentally, this part of the base also functions as a wireless charger, so you can easily put your phone or earbuds down on it while playing some music.

The actual speaker itself is actually the tetrahedron that stands upside down on its top, representing an object falling into a pond. Like many wireless speakers these days, it uses some fabric material to cover its surfaces. The only parts that remain uncovered are the playback buttons on top, and the curved tip below that acts as the wireless charging contact point for the base. This would also be where strong magnets are located that keep the speaker from toppling over.

Yes, the speaker can actually be removed from the base if that wasn’t yet evident. This allows DROPS to be used anywhere at any time, though charging outdoors could prove to be difficult when the battery runs out. The loop on top is specifically designed to be easily hooked onto a carabiner or strap. It’s no larger than most portable speakers, though its actual audio output can’t really be guaranteed. Then again, there are speakers of this size that can produce decent quality sound, so that might not be that big of a problem.

The DROPS speaker and wireless charger concept isn’t exactly mind-blowing or game-changing in terms of innovation, but its distinctive design will definitely make it an eye-catching piece in any room. The use of a flat circular bed to both represent water and serve as a wireless charger is definitely genius. Its very design and reference to water produce an almost calming effect, making it an excellent centerpiece when listening to some soothing and relaxing tunes.

This rugged portable speaker looks like a war-torn sci-fi space carrier

Portable wireless speakers come in many shapes and sizes, but most of them are designed to be easy to carry around, whether by hand or inside a bag. That means that typical designs revolve around conventional shapes like cylinders and bars, though a few speakers have unusual and interesting forms that try to grab your attention. There are, of course, always exceptions to those rules, and some portable speakers seem to prioritize appearances over portability, especially when they’re just in concept form. This particular wireless speaker is an example of the latter, and while it uses one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of rugged equipment as its muse, it can easily be mistaken for a miniature model of some sci-fi spaceship.

Designer: Harry Rigler

A spaceship naturally has to be made to be able to withstand many dangerous forces outside of our control. One that could be carrying a fleet of smaller battleships needs to be extra tough to survive enemy fire. Given its purpose, this kind of ship doesn’t need to have an elaborate design, which is almost a perfect model for something that’s designed to be used in an industrial setting today.

The Aurras speaker concept tries to take its design cues from Caterpillar, better identified by its CAT logo, a brand whose heavy equipment has become a de facto standard in the industry. It has even lent its name to smartphones that try to capitalize on the company’s fame for producing rugged products. This speaker’s black, white, and orange motif try to convey that association beyond the telltale logo, but you can’t be blamed if you connect the design with something totally unrelated to heavy machines used in construction.

The speaker looks like something that would be coming out of an outer space warp gate, carrying inside it other spaceships. The trapezoidal shape and industrial appearance give it an almost militaristic look in this context. You can almost expect the front of the device to lower like a drawbridge and unleash dozens of smaller ships upon enemy forces.

Despite its futuristic aesthetic, the Aurras’ design is pretty simple and utilitarian. There are three knobs along the top to control treble, bass, and volume. Everything else is operated using a smartphone or any other device connected via Bluetooth. The back has a single port for a USB-C cable to charge the battery inside, though it might also be possible to connect it to a sound source that way.

Beyond its appearance, the concept is also interesting in its actual construction. It’s designed to be easy to take apart using an Allen key, making it more trivial to swap out components or shells to customize its look. Its aluminum and HDPE plastic shell were also chosen to give it actual ruggedness, helping it survive present-day enemies such as accidents. Whether it’s sitting on a workshop table or hanging around in our gaming room, the Aurras portable speaker concept tries to look good and hopefully sound good as well, bringing some enjoyment to what could be a busy day of work or play.

Xiaomi Wearable Wrist Speaker Concept is a crazy wearable audio device that lets you ‘feel’ the music

[The designer of this product is of Ukrainian origin. YD is sharing work from Ukrainian designers/students in the hopes of amplifying their talent and giving them a global platform.]

No, this isn’t a fan-made arc repulsor from Iron Man, although you wouldn’t be the first one to mistake it for one. Instead, it’s a refreshingly new speaker concept that merges sound and sapien together to create an experience absolutely new. The Xiaomi Wearable Speaker is a conceptual Bluetooth audio device that’s designed to sit on your wrist. Instead of making you just hear the audio by putting headphones in your ears, the Xiaomi Wireless Wrist Speaker makes you hear and FEEL audio because the speaker is quite literally strapped to your body. The sound travels through your ears, and the speaker’s vibrations traverse through your body, sort of mimicking the effect of being at a concert, where the music actually goes through your body, immersing you deeply.

[Follow Ivan Zhurba on Instagram]

Designer: Ivan Zhurba

Unlike your average speaker, the Xiaomi Wireless Wrist Speaker has a unique design that makes it especially effective as a wearable. For starters, the speaker unit features multiple double-sided drivers that vibrate both outwards and inwards, sending the thumping audio into the air, but also into your body. The wrist-worn wearable has a one-size-fits-all design, with an inflatable inner layer that tightens around your forearm (sort of like inflatable arm-bands that kids wear while swimming). The tubular design of the wearable allows the drivers to sit on one side, with a 14000mAh battery pack on the other side, powering the speaker for long listening sessions.

The idea of a wearable speaker isn’t entirely new. Companies have experimented with subwoofer jackets that basically send audio right through your body in the form of haptics, allowing you to experience sound on an audio-physical level. To an extent, bone-conducting headphones do the same thing, transmitting vibrations to the auditory nerve through the bone right in front of your ear. Zhurba’s concept builds on the same strategy and the underlying philosophy of allowing people to ‘feel’ music – something Zhurba suggests would be wonderful while meditating, exercising, running, or even riding a cycle or motorbike!

Zhurba’s design exists as just a concept for now, with the use of the Xiaomi branding being purely representational. “My vision of the design is similar with the company’s philosophy”, he mentions. The speaker, however, is patent-pending and Zhurba is currently looking for people to help finance its production. You can reach out to him via email, or through his Instagram.

Customizable wireless speaker comes with a blank fabric canvas that you can paint artworks on

Styled like a vintage speaker/radio, the Trenbader Artlink has a twist to its otherwise retro design… it essentially sports a blank canvas for you to draw artworks on, effectively customizing the speaker to suit your sensibilities!

The Artlink is a pretty wonderful example of emotional design done right. Just like you get attached to IKEA products because you put your own effort and sweat into building them, the Trenbader Artlink is the kind of audio device you fall in love with because you put a bit of yourself into it by making art on its speaker fabric! The speaker sports a design that’s highly reminiscent of the Marshall and Fender-style amps, complete with a cuboidal wooden outer cabinet, chrome knobs, and even a shiny retro-style beveled logo on the bottom right corner. The rest of the speaker, or at least the front of it, is an empty artboard that’s made to be customized by you. The fabric on the front is absorbent and you can use any kind of sketch pen or marker on it (as long as it isn’t oil-based) to paint abstract artworks on it, turning the wireless speaker into a bespoke art piece… a real-life NFT, if you will.

The Trenbader Artlink is a beautiful vintage-style wireless Bluetooth speaker that comes with a built-in radio too. On the inside, the Artlink sports a full-range transducer along with a high-quality passive subwoofer, all packaged in a wooden cabinet that provides rich, distortion-free audio with crisp highs and deep lows. Two knurled knobs on the top let you switch between modes (Bluetooth, Aux, AM, FM, Mic, and Off) and control the volume, while a third dial located on the left lets you set the frequency on the AM/FM radio. The speaker comes with Bluetooth 4.0 that allows for connections as far as 33 feet, and if you’re in the mood to go wired, there’s an Aux input too.

The Trenbader Artlink’s highlight, however, is its customizable front. The speaker fabric sits on a removable faceplate that can be customized and even swapped to change the speaker’s aesthetic! Each speaker ships with an extra faceplate, giving you two canvases to make your artworks on, along with detailed instructions to show you how to customize your speaker’s canvas using a variety of painting techniques from marker-coloring to brushing, sponging, and more!

Designed to be portable yet still powerful enough to pack a punch, the Artlink comes with over 12-hours of battery life on a full charge. It charges via MicroUSB (there’s a cable inside the box), and each Trenbader Artlink also comes with its own faceplate removal tool, letting you swap out the faceplate and effectively change the entire vibe of the speaker whenever you feel like it!

This wireless speaker enchants with its lantern-shaped design and a flickering mood light within it

Designed with a multisensorial experience, the Light Speaker from Transparent appeals to your eyes as much as it does to your ears. Styled to look less like your conventional speaker with front-firing drivers, or like the ubiquitous smart speaker with a cylindrical fabric clad, the Light Speaker champions a lantern-inspired design… and in true lantern fashion, also comes with a light on the inside that flickers as the speaker’s drivers vibrates, creating a hauntingly beautiful audiovisual allure.

In its lamp-shaped avatar, the Light Speaker rubbishes the notion of what a Bluetooth speaker should look like. Taking on an appearance that looks aesthetic even when the lamp isn’t on, the Light Speaker is a compact little number that comes with a handle that can be detached if needed. The speaker’s design is entirely modular, something its maker Transparent believes wholeheartedly in, and comes with two drivers, one on top, and another below, with a glass chamber in between. The chamber acts as the viewing glass for the so-called flame, which glows at the base, reflecting off the vibrating cone of the lower audio driver. As you pump up the volume, the diaphragm vibrates more, and makes it look like the flame is flickering hard. While this looks rather alluring, it does mean you need to play louder music to get the flame to flicker more, which may end up conflicting with the mood you’re trying to set. That being said, at its brightest setting, the speaker actually works as a lantern, doing a fairly good job of illuminating a dark room with a soft wash of light.

The Light Speaker’s design uses borosilicate glass and aluminum grills, and it has an IPX2 weather rating, which makes it fairly usable outdoors, although you may want to stay away from the rains. The borosilicate glass means the Light Speaker isn’t as rugged as the everyday outdoor wireless speaker, but then again, it has the appeal of something that doubles as home decor, and not as a utilitarian product meant for rugged outdoor use.

Each Light Speaker comes with a two-knob interface, which ties in with the speaker’s minimalist design. One knob controls the volume, and the other the intensity of the light within. The speaker features an adjustable light-temperature setting too, allowing you to go from a deep amber light to a yellow and even a white light. Understandably, the light’s flickering effect is best enjoyed in the dark, although even in the day, you’ve at least got a rather pretty postmodern-looking lantern to admire while the Light Speaker pumps out sound.

The Light Speaker comes from the same folks who brought you the Transparent Speaker, and encapsulates the same design principle of being pure, responsible, and infinitely serviceable. The speaker can be pulled apart at any time, and its parts repaired, replaced, or even upgraded, championing a circular economy that’s rare in most consumer electronics today. It’s priced at $350, which is definitely on the higher side considering you could get 3 HomePod Minis for the price and still have change left… but then again, seldom can you ever say that your wireless Bluetooth speaker also looks like and functions as an ambient lantern.

This portable home speaker is a sculptural design that rocks a very Dyson-like aesthetic!

Reminiscent of a Dyson fan, Stelae is a portable home speaker designed to deliver quality audio through a technical build that could be mistaken for a piece of sculptural artwork on your coffee table.

Home speakers have a reputation for looking too high-tech to fit into modern living rooms. When placed beside gleaming photo frames and metallic light fixtures, the wires and bulky build of speakers take away from an otherwise clean, minimal interior design. Merging an abstract sculptural look with a metallic chrome finish, Stalae is a portable home speaker designed by Lucis Ceng to bring the subtle taste of sculptural work to electronic design.

While Stelae’s physical build is reminiscent of a Dyson fan’s, the inspiration for Stelae’s distinct form stems from sculpture work. Standing out from other home entertainment systems, Stelae’s speaker plumes from its circular base into the shape of a feather for a slim design that doesn’t take up too much room on the coffee table. The long tube-like portion of Stelae is also lined with four woofers.

Portable by design, Stelae comes with a wire for at-home charging but can also be run on its charged battery for wireless listening. The vertical control panel of Stelae is located at the top of the speaker, equipped with volume and play buttons, users can also connect to Bluetooth and turn the speaker on and off from the control panel. Along the outer edges of Stelae’s circular base, users can find the speaker’s USB type-c ports to connect their own smartphones and control the music from there.

While speakers are generally seen as bulky electronic hardware, Stelae looks to sculpture work to solidify itself as a statement interior design product, seamlessly blending in with other artwork around the house. Since Stelae is also portable, the artful design can be taken anywhere – from the beach to the streets.

Designer: Lucis Ceng

Inspired by sculptural artwork, Stelae has an appealing and distinct design.

The transparent tube-like portion of Stelae houses the speaker’s woofers.

Finished in chrome, Stelae merges sculptural artwork with electronic tech design.

Providing 10W of power, the stand fits phones of all makes and sizes and the fact that there’s now a built-in speaker on the back just makes things so much better! The BOOST↑CHARGE comes in two colors (white and black) and is available for $49.99 on Belkin’s site. Keep it on your desk, nightstand, kitchen counter, or mantelpiece. The BOOST↑CHARGE gives you a wireless charger and a multimedia device set-up all wrapped into one gadget!
