Stormtrooper Vision Test Tries to Get to the Bottom of Things

Have you ever wondered why Stormtroopers can’t hit the broad side of a barn with their blasters? Perhaps they’re not getting enough Vitamin C? Or is it that the lenses of their helmets distort their vision? Maybe they just all have bad eyesight and need glasses. This hilarious painting from artist Travis Chapman is going with the latter view of things.

This one-of-a-kind original 24″ x 24″ acrylic painting is available for sale on Etsy for $700, and features an image of a stormtrooper as he sits for a vision test at the Empire’s designated optometrist, as the eye doc tries to figure out how to correct the soldier’s eyesight. Is this one better? Or this one? 1 or 2? 2 or 3? Better… or better?

Perhaps if all of the stormtroopers went through a proper eye exam and got contacts, they would have done so much better, and taken down that pesky rebellion back when they first tried to get their hands on the Death Star plans.

A Single Sheet Seat!

crease_furniture_1

This series of furniture is made the way packaging boxes are. Laser cut out of a single sheet of material (in this case, acrylic), and bent into shape, creating an interesting, aesthetically minimal series of furniture.

While punching out shapes from acrylic (also reffered to as PMMA) may result in material wastage, the arrangement of shapes can be optimized for the least amount of waste generation. Plus, the Crease furniture saves on production costs by utilizing manufacturing techniques cheaper than injection molding, and completely doing away with glue, screws, or joinery to be put together. The use of clear acrylic highlights the furniture’s unique folded construction, while giving the impression of being delicate (which it’s assuredly not), so that people consciously and sub-consciously treat it carefully, making it last longer! Clever, isn’t it?!

Adventure Time Grass Sword Replica: I’m Cool with That

If you watch Adventure Time, you know that Finn the Human has a cool sword made of grass. When he got it, he could not get it off his arm. The grass just wrapped itself around his hand. It was a trap set by the Grassy Wizard. Here is a real life prop of the sword that looks just as cool.

It may have been a trap, but it was a real kick butt sword, so Finn just said, “You know what? I think I’m cool with that.” Sometimes when you have a totally awesome sword, you just have to accept its quirks.

This acrylic and plastic replica comes from Etsy seller ThePropShop for just $65(USD). The question is, will you be able to put it down after you get it?

Laser Cut Space Invaders Chess Set

Pew pew, check. Pew pew, checkmate. This is one really cool geeky 8-bit chess set with Space Invaders pieces. It’s made from laser cut acrylic with snap-in bases. The board is a two piece interlocking board, also made of acrylic. It might be a little tricky to remember which Invader is the King/Queen/Knight/Bishop/Rook but once you play a few times I’m sure it will be second nature.

This chess set is a fully funded Kickstarter project, so you can order a set for $40 (just the pieces) or $65 with the chessboard.

Space Invaders Chess Set: Pew! Check! Pew! Pew! Checkmate!

If you’ve been following Technabob for a while, you know I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Space Invaders, so when I saw that these guys were working on a chess set inspired by the classic arcade game, it put a big grin on my face.

The guys at Michigan’s NMI Laser have finally put their schmancy Epilog industrial laser cutter to good use, creating an awesome version of the invaders, adapted to the chess board. The set comes with fluorescent acrylic invaders in green and pink, and a laser-etched black game board to go with. I love their selection of aliens for each of the different chess playing pieces – especially the laser base for the King and the spaceship for the Queen.

The complete Space Invaders Chess Set will set you back $65, including both the board and the 32 invader playing pieces. Keep in mind that this is a Kickstarter project, and they need to hit their goal of $5000 by February 28 in order to go into production by April.

They’re already almost half way there, so I know you guys can make it happen! All you need to do is just drop down, reverse direction and increase speed on over to Kickstarter now to pledge your support.

Game Controller Bracelet Puts Your Wrist in Control of 9 Tiny Consoles

If you’re a gamer and want to express your fanaticism without resorting something as obvious as a Space Invaders sweater or Game Boy tube dress, here’s something a little more subtle.

mirrored controller bracelet

These nifty laser-cut bracelets feature tiny versions of some of gaming’s greatest controllers. There’s everything from the modern classic Xbox 360 controller, to the jumbo-sized Dreamcast controller, and the classic NES and SNES gamepads. Though the original Atari 2600 controllers and Wii-mote are nowhere to be found – presumably due to their atypical shapes.

The bracelets are made by Use Your Digits, and come in either mirrored, black, red or yellow acrylic. The bracelets measure about 9-inches-long and just over 1-inch wide. So unless you’re an Atari fanatic, you can outfit your wrist with one of these Game Controller Bracelets over on Etsy for about $36(USD). If you can’t afford that, you could always just wrap the cord from your old wired joystick around your wrist.

Keyboard Coasters Prevent Spills Not Typos

I’m not a big fan of typing on touchscreens, as I make way more errors and type much more slowly than with an actual keyboard. Call me old-school, but I like to feel the keys under my fingers when I touch type. While these keyboard coasters won’t help solve my flatscreen typing woes, they should keep my table clear of drink sweat.

MollaSpace’s acrylic keyboard coasters remind you to “S-P-I-L-L-O-N-L-Y-I-F-Y-O-U-D-A-R-E.” Though the consequences of getting a little soda on these keys is much less dire than spilling a drink on your actual computer keyboard.

$20 bucks buys you a set of four keyboard coasters, including two in black and two in white. And if you’re looking for an actual computer keyboard you can spill drinks on, check out this one.

See-Through Cocoon Lets You Live in Your Own Little Bubble

Every once in a while, I feel like being alone and that’s one of the times I feel extremely lucky and fortunate that we have a spare room in the house. Not that I’m a loner or anything, but I just like being able to get away from everyone and everything sometimes.

If I didn’t have a spare room to go to, then I’m sure something like the plastic-shelled Cocoon 1 would be totally up my alley. Although the price, not so much.

Cocoon1The Cocoon 1 is a piece of furniture that you can actually live in. It’s like the Cocoon Tent we saw earlier, only it’s made with a tough and clear material–and, well, it’s not a tent.

Cocoon

Designed by Swiss design group Micasa Lab, the Cocoon is cushy and roomy enough to let people sleep, eat, relax, and do whatever they want by their lonesome while they’re in it. The inside of the Cocoon is modular, so it can be configured as a living, working or even a cooking space. You can even get a Wi-Fi module for surfing the web inside of it.

The Cocoon 1 seems like a concept, but it’s actually an actual product that will be arriving sometime in Fall of 2013.

The only downside? The base model is priced at $2,990(USD), and goes up from there.

Skateboard Lamp Great for Doing Faceplants from Your Ceiling

I was always pretty good at the Tony Hawk: Pro Skater games, pulling off mad combo moves thanks to generous use of manuals between tricks. Unfortunately, the second I hop on a real skateboard, forget about it. A 200-pound guy falling face-first off a skateboard isn’t a pretty sight (thought it could be popular on YouTube.) For those of you who’d rather keep the skate trucks off the ground, maybe you should go for one of these instead.

skateboard lamp

This whimsical skateboard ceiling lamp is actually designed for a kid’s room, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for anyone into ‘boarding. Though with its thin 24″ acrylic deck and narrow aircraft cables suspending it from its chrome canopy, I wouldn’t recommend trying to hop on it, unless you’re a hamster – or maybe a kitten. A skateboarding cat – now that’s something I’d like to see. Oh, Internet.

Skatepunks can Ollie on over to ELights, where you can grab one of these boards for about $178(USD).

Ibis hotels to have robots paint art while they track your sleep no, that's not creepy at all video

First they invaded our factories, and now it's our hotel rooms. Is nowhere safe from the robots? In truth, Ibis' upcoming Sleep Art project is very slick, even if it smacks of robot voyeurism. Ibis hotels in Berlin, London and Paris will let 40 successful applicants sleep on beds that each have 80 sensors translating movements, sound and temperature into truly unique acrylic paintings by robotic arms connected through WiFi. You don't have to worry that the machines are literally watching you sleep -- there's no cameras or other visual records of the night's tossing and turning, apart from the abstract lines on the canvas. All the same, if you succeed in landing a stay in one of the Sleep Art hotel rooms between October 13th and November 23rd, you're a brave person. We all know how this ends.
