Versatile indoor/outdoor bench made from recycled aluminum is inspired by the texture of pasta

I love pasta, and I think most of the general population does, and whoever doesn’t is probably an alien from outer space. Soft chewy carbs that pair perfectly with two of my favorite things on earth – cheese, and wine! I mean, come on, pasta is quite literally perfection. And I guess Norwegian designer Lars Beller Fjetland had the same opinion because pasta is the inspiration for his newest furniture design – the Bello! bench.

Designer: Lars Beller Fjetland for Hydro

Fjetland designed the Bello! bench for the aluminum producer Hydro. And what was his muse for this piece? You got it right – pasta, or to be more precise penne rigate! Informed by the design and form of pasta, the Bello! bench is a versatile piece of furniture that can be used indoors and outdoors. It’s been created from nearly ninety percent recycled and hundred percent recyclable aluminum.

Fjetland was inspired by a piece of penne rigate, which is responsible for the ridged and textured surface of Bello! “The subtle ridges add so much value – you just have to run your fingers across the surface. These tactile discoveries mean so much to me,” said the designer. Aluminum extrusion was used to produce the bench, a process that involves the heating of metal through a hole, that is shaped in the desired form. The process is quite similar to the way pasta shapes are created!

“With this design, I really wanted to emphasize the possibilities of extruded aluminum. It is very much a culmination of everything I appreciate – from the planes, trains, and buses that were designed in the 1930s–1970s, to brutalist architecture and, last but not least, pasta,” said Fjetland. Since aluminum was the material of choice for Bello!, this instantly makes the bench sturdy, strong, and durable and not to mention lightweight. It can be used in places with high traffic such as public transportation hubs. It can be customized and modified to incorporate tables, lamps, or chargers since it does not have an internal support structure. The bench is not available currently, but it will be released at Norway’s annual Milan design week showcase, so keep an eye out for it!

This 3D printed sculptural concrete bench is designed to enhance the Southampton Skate Park

Rich Holland has designed multiple skateparks around the world, and he’s now busy working on an inclusive new park in Southampton. The new park is meant to elevate and revamp Southampton’s skating scene, and Holland has rejuvenated the space with a series of super interesting furniture objects!

Designer: Rich Holland

Holland has been known for his skateboard-centric designs and landscapes since 2000, and one of his recent works involved strategizing and designing the Nike skate landscape in the brand’s Netherlands headquarters.  And, his collaboration with Skate Southampton involves renovating and transforming the pre-existing space at Guildhall Square, and creating a skating area that is much more open, spacious, engaging, and visually and aesthetically pleasing! And Holland recently unveiled one of the pieces – the PSFF Bench. The PSFF Bench is a prototype and is a furniture piece with a sculptural appeal to it.

It is 3D printed using concrete! Besides adding character to the square and enhancing its overall appeal, the bench aims to function as an off-the-shelf solution for providing public skateboard-focused furniture to places all over the world. 3D Printing is truly gaining more momentum and popularity than ever. Designers and architects all over the world are now adopting 3D Printing for the creation of almost all types of products and structures. It’s a technique that is being widely utilized in product design, owing to its simple and innovative nature, so it’s no surprise that it’s being introduced to the world of sports as well.

With this project Holland hopes to bring iconic sweeping skate landscapes, and minimal concrete design to the skating world of Southampton. It includes a collection of 3D-printed furniture pieces that are wholly focused on skating. The objects are created using concrete, and no other material. The 3D-printing process used to produce the pieces was brought to life in collaboration with the Eindhoven University of Technology and contractor BAM Infra. The process is supremely optimized and produces premium-quality construction products. The furniture is quite sports-centric and has a rather minimalistic and unassuming appeal to it, allowing the material, the form, and the sturdiness to speak through.

Camber envisions chairs and benches made from a single sheet of metal

Furniture is so critical and so common in our lives that few of us probably give a second thought to how they’re made. As long as they serve their purpose and look good, tables, chairs, and other pieces of furniture might as well be made from alien material for most people. Unfortunately, the materials and processes used to make these essential products have started to chip away at the health of the planet for the sake of keeping humans comfortable. Designers have started to become more aware and conscientious of this problem, and they have started to put their creativity to work in solving it. In addition to using sustainable materials right from the start, another potential answer is to reduce the amount of waste that results from the manufacturing process, like a single sheet of metal that is then cut and bent to form a sharp-looking chair.

Designer: Paul Coenen

Even the simplest piece of furniture sometimes uses multiple parts. A table will be made of at least four legs attached to a tabletop, and those connections might require screws or other means to keep the table from falling apart with the slightest weight. With conventional furniture designs, these parts are often cut out or formed at different times from different materials, a process that often yields wastes bits and pieces that can no longer be used anywhere else.

Some furniture designs have become a bit smarter by attempting to utilize every inch of a single sheet of wood or metal, but those might still need extra parts to connect them together. A more efficient way would be to just use the whole sheet and nothing else, but it’s also more challenging to create visually appealing designs. You might think it’s a simple case of folding metal, for example, but making it usable while also looking good is actually harder than you might think.

Camber is an attempt to check all those boxes by cutting and bending a single sheet of stainless steel to form seats you’d want to look at as much as sit on. Rather than simply bending two ends to form legs, the design actually involves making two angular cuts where the folds would happen before actually bending down the legs. This creates not only a more interesting design but also adds some stability to the bench or stool’s legs.

Sanding gives the seats a reflective yet matte surface, removing the need for any harmful coating. It’s an almost perfect complement to the designer’s SST mirror, which uses the same single-sheet principle, except that the surface is polished to the point that it becomes more reflecting. Stainless steel might not be the most environment-friendly metal, but its longevity ensures that these chairs and benches should last far longer than other types. Camber is simple, almost brutalist in its appearance, but its appeal goes beyond looks, offering a design that isn’t only efficient but also, in some odd way, charming in its own right.

This bench and coffee table is an interesting place for transient people and things

Not all seats are meant to encourage people to lounge for hours, and not all tables are designed to be permanent homes for stationery or decorations. There is furniture that is meant to be a brief oasis of rest for a person on the move or a temporary holding ground for stuff in transit. Benches, stools, side tables, and even coffee tables are examples of such furniture with impermanent functions, providing a comfortable pit stop that doesn’t require a longer commitment of time and effort. Just because people and things often pass them by doesn’t mean they don’t need to be attractive and interesting, and this combination of a bench and a coffee table is one such curious twist that seems to contradict its very name.

Designer: Ricardo Sá

Compared to other pieces of furniture, seats and tables often convey a sense of rest and stillness. After all, you have to stop to sit down, and an object placed on top of a table stays still unless you move it. Compared to a lounge or a sofa, however, a bench also implies a sense of motion after a temporary pause, where someone sits for a while and then resumes their activity. Similarly, a coffee table is often a place for cups and books waiting for a brief period before being picked up again to be used.

Wait, then, is the perfect name for a multi-functional piece of furniture that embraces these passages of time. But while the word itself carries the meaning of stopping briefly, the design of the bench almost contradicts this identity. A horizontal slab of wood intersects a wave-like form that gives it a character of dynamism and an illusion of movement. It’s like it’s lying in wait, ready to jump into action at any given moment.

That dynamism is also present in how the furniture can be used. It takes very little to change the function of the piece; simply removing one or both cushions frees the surface to be used as table tops. You don’t even have to stick to one or the other mode since leaving one cushion creates a half-and-half that serves both purposes.

There are more permanent structures to hold objects, though they’re not exactly designed to keep them there forever. The bottom spaces can hold books, magazines, or even the unused cushions, while the middle cavern can be a spot to hide phones and remote controls. The hump in the middle could be a place for a cup, though its somewhat curved shape doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Whichever way you combine the functions or whether your place it off to the side or in the middle of a room, Wait will be ready to give you and your stuff a place to catch your breath before heading off to your next adventure.

Bench design explores the use of a continuously wrapped piece of plywood

We probably seldom notice the designs of benches except for those that have bench ads on them (and not always in a good way). As long as it’s something we can sit on (and sometimes lie on), then we’re all good. But there are also some that are pretty well-designed and thought of, adding another layer to something that’s almost always functional rather than just decorative. It’s those kinds of furniture that captures the eyes and sometimes, the imagination, of users.

Designer: Marc Hoogendijk

The Swedish-based furniture designer wanted to create something that blends together technology and design. He created an indoor bench called Serpentin which gives us the illusion that it’s one continuous piece of wood. He says he likes using a methodology that “mimics function of human-made objects” and then uses this on the furniture he designs. He calls this “technomimicry” and he applied it to this bench as well.

His inspiration for the bench design is actually pretty interesting. It’s actually from tubes that are made from a continuous strip of paper wrapped around continuously, like what you see in toilet papers or liquor containers. So when you first lay eyes on the Serpentin, it looks like a single strip of wood that’s wrapped around the bars of a wooden frame. You even see the “end” of the strip hanging on the edge of the bar.

Despite the seemingly intricate design, the bench actually looks pretty comfortable. The way the wood and wood fibers have been sculpted gives it a softness that invites you to sit on it and rest for a while. At the very least, it’s a pretty good conversation starter when you invite people into your house or porch.

NEW JOY has a very unconventional take on outdoor tables and benches

When we go outside, we often have a purpose or a destination. Sometimes, however, we also sometimes just want to be outdoors without going anywhere. Sometimes, you might want to work while standing up or chat with friends for a few minutes. Other times you might just want to give your feet a rest while waiting for someone and sipping coffee. In these cases, people are often just in a state of pause rather than completely settling down for long periods of time. This is the kind of inactivity that this outdoor furniture concept is designed for, creating a space for people to stop, stand, and sit, all while still adopting an active lifestyle, ironic as that may sound.

Designers: Chaoze Zhong and Chang Wu of Wild Zoo Design Studio

The NEW JOY collection of outdoor furniture immediately strikes one as unconventional from the first time you see it. In terms of both form and material, the design is inspired by round tubes or pipes that you’d see in public facilities. Although they can be painted with different colors, there is still something inherently raw with their appearance, especially with the use of simple lines and circles to form the structure of the benches and tables.

Appearance isn’t the only area where these pieces of furniture stand out. Their form and function revolve around the idea of remaining active even while not in mention, as well as offering opportunities to exercise at a moment’s notice. These ideas of rest and movement seem so diametrically opposed that it’s quite interesting to see them together in a single piece.

1

The table, for example, is meant to be used while standing up, but that isn’t exactly unheard of. What makes it different is that you’re supposed to stand on a round platform that you can rotate with your feet. This way, you can twist your body or keep moving even while you’re working on your laptop or talking with other people. It does raise some concerns about whether such motions are actually safe, especially outdoors where one could fall on pavement or hard ground when caught off-balance.

The bench, on the other hand, looks almost uninviting and uncomfortable, which is somewhat the point. Instead of being something you can lounge on, it is more like a temporary parking space while you wait for someone or finish your drink. It can also be used for leg presses or other light exercises, though you should be in proper gear if you want to do anything more strenuous than those. The small table can hold drinks, phones, handbags, or even laptops, though the bench’s crude shape might not make it ideal for long periods of work.

The NEW JOY’s simple design and use of easily accessible materials make it easy to produce and distribute. There’s even enough room to use more sustainable materials, like wood and recycled metal, while using existing production pipelines to conserve resources. Admittedly, it’s not something one would consider to be aesthetically captivating, but such easy-to-build outdoor furniture does have its place in public spaces that try to offer places to rest without encouraging loitering.

The Arch Bench demonstrates how ranged arch structures work and carry a heavy load

The Arch Bench Shinya Oguchi

Benches are common in public spaces like playgrounds, airports, and malls. They are a convenient place to sit while waiting for someone or rest after walking. Benches also serve a decorative purpose, adding a style to the surroundings or a room. They come in different types like a garden bench, indoor bench, storage bench, or planter bench. We have seen a lot of well-designed pieces and have a few favorites like those minimalist yet elegant and come with designs that will make you think. The Arch Bench here is an ideal example of that.

Designer: Shinya Oguchi

The Arch Bench Shinya Oguchi

Benches are ubiquitous like chairs, but they can be more useful as they can sit more than three people. Industrial designer Shinya Oguchi revisited “what makes a bench a bench”. He experimented on different widths of the bench, using paper mock-ups. He found a solution for a new structure for a bench that would also look beautiful like a sculpture: the arch shape. This then resulted in a new furniture concept called The Arch Bench.

The Arch Bench’s design seems impossible to ordinary eyes, but making this a sturdy item is the arch structure. Arches generally work by transferring and distributing the weight through the arch to a supporting foundation. As a result, they can support mass placed on top of them. Used in this conceptual piece, the structural strength of the arches has allowed the bench to carry a heavy load and offer more support to the seat.

From afar, The Arch Bench appears like an arcade with two arches in the middle and one half-arch on each side. The converged points below serve as the legs, giving more support to the structure. There are a total of five divided parts screwed by short bolts, firmly holding the bench together.

The Arch Bench Shinya Oguchi

So the bench can carry the load of three persons, but is it comfortable enough to use? It probably is because of the gentle curves on the seat compared to those with flat seats. According to the designer, the seats are curved in response to the arch structure, inviting people to rest and sit on the bench, even for a while.

The Arch Bench is a minimalist piece of furniture with thin lines and a lightweight appearance. It uses a very thin sheet of metal known for its lightness and durability. The metal sheet is cut and curved to produce the ranged arch structures. The bench comes with a white matte finish that looks like a sheet of paper.

The Arch Bench Shinya Oguchi

The Arch Bench is one beautiful sculpture-like piece of furniture that takes advantage of the arch shape and a super thin but strong medium. Its minimalist design shows that balance and proportion in furniture design are essential. Everyday items with a streamlined style like this bench give a sense of calm, order, and strength in this stressful world.

Bond bench concept design opens to reveal two stools with storage underneath

Bond Stool 2022

James Bond.–we’re confident that’s what came to your mind immediately after learning about the name of this stool. Well, this doesn’t have anything to do with Agent 007, but this kind of furniture piece will have you and your partner bond like there’s no tomorrow.

This is just a stool, but its particular purpose is to make two persons live in unity. How? You open the stool system and separate the parts to seat two persons. Some people will probably not understand the point because the stools are too close, but the Bond can be perfect for couples always on the go.

Designer: Ricardo Sá

Bond 2022 Designer

If you and your partner love going out, you can sit together on the stools while you wear your shoes and before you head out the door. Bond is just to be closer with one another because, you know, some couples just can get enough of each other.

The Bond stool system also features some storage space inside. You can put anything inside, like maybe your shoes or your laptop. Likewise, you can probably put there your purse or just about anything you don’t want to forget.

Bond 2022 Design

Bond 2022 Details

The Bond is mainly made of wooden material, so you know it’s durable enough to withstand the test of time. The seat material appears to be cork so that it can be comfortable. When closed, Bond looks more like a bench or a horse saddle. Of course, you’d only be sitting on the Bond for a few seconds or minutes, but you would be guaranteed comfort.

Bond 2022 Structure

Bond is a stool that’s been designed for sharing and storage. This furniture piece can greet people coming into your home and can be an instant conversation starter. When closed, others will see it as more of a bench for the entryway, but it turns out to be stools for two persons. It’s an example of a space-saving furniture item that we like to see more in the future.

Bond Chair 2022

Bond’s aesthetics is minimalist, like anything Japanese or Scandinavian. It’s the kind of furniture piece that is now trendy these days. We highly doubt people will ever get tired of such aesthetics because simple and neutral designs are timeless.

The cork material makes any product or object unique. The choice of cork especially in home goods strikes the balance between sustainability and practicality. Such products have already been designed to prove that sustainable material is here to stay. There’s another cork that makes for a sustainable future. More cork products have been introduced like modern sneakers and cork headphones.

The Bogdan Collection makes use of one solid trunk of linden wood

Bogdan Series Studiointervallo

There is something about Italian furniture that sets it apart from others. We love that furniture design can be elegant, luxurious, and modern at the same time. That is for most of the contemporary pieces we are being introduced to, like the Bogdan Collection by Studiointervallo.

The studio’s founder, Andrea Ghisoni, designed this series of furniture that includes a bench, a console table, a coffee table, and a side table. You may want the whole collection as every piece can go well with the minimalist aesthetics of your home. Every unit is made of a single carved solid linden wood and boasts a single line of color defining the shape and the perimeter.

Designer: Andrea Ghisoni

Bogdan Furniture Collection

The collection pieces come with cone-shaped legs arranged in circles to support the tabletop. Such arrangement also offers one visual element. Described as a mono-material collection, the Bogdan also features colored milled-edge ribs for a bit of style and accent.

The bench is ready in one size only, while the tables arrive in different sizes. There is also a console table that may be ideal for placing in your foyer or the living room. The tables’ legs are actually two clusters of cones for better support.

Bogdan Bench

Bogdan Console

The Bogdan Collection has a total of five different pieces. It was released in 2021 and can be purchased from SORS. Every piece shows premium craftsmanship and bold shapes while still maintaining clean lines.

We like that the Bogdan furniture pieces were designed with the use of space in mind. The bench and tables’ use of space was taken into consideration. Everything appears clean and simple, which is something minimalists will love.

Bogdan Design Studiointervallo

Bogdan SORS Paris

Designer Andrea Ghisoni is famous for his clean and essential lines combined with bold shapes. The Bogdan bench and tables boast minimalist aesthetics that are very popular these days. There may be a lot of similar furniture collections, but only a few stand out, like the Bogdan. Every piece is handmade, so you know it’s special.

Bogdan SORS Paris

The Bogdan Console

The collection offers functional art that can also work as conversation starters. The pieces serve their utilitarian purposes while working as decors. They’re minimalist but can very well capture the eyes. In addition, they bring a sense of organized and calm feeling as any clutter-free room should offer.

There are several Italian furniture collections we’ve featured butt only a few have made a real impression, especially among the minimalists. We remember the Felipe Pantone x Poltrona Frau Archibald Armchair and the Foresta System. The Bogdan Collection enters the scene with pieces that we know can be timeless.

This modular bench concept gives bikers a place to park and sit

There is no shortage of ideas on how to give everyone a seat, especially outdoors. Of course, space for benches and chairs will always be a problem, whether it’s at a park or some vacant area in the middle of towering buildings. That’s not even considering yet those “in-between” places where people come and go a lot, only stopping by for a brief breather. Such resting places for cyclists, for example, are far and few in between, and they aren’t exactly designed for this segment of the world’s active population. That’s the very specific need that this bench concept is trying to address, giving cyclists a place to rest while still offering the option to accommodate a bunch of people at the same time.

Designer: Alonso Bastos Durán

Of course, there are public and outdoor spaces that cater to those who regularly take their bikes out, either for work, leisure, or exercise. In most cases, however, there is a single parking space for these bikes that are often a good distance away from where they might want to sit down and chill. Sure, that does force them to work their legs a bit more, but it might introduce inconveniences as well as concerns over the security of their metal steeds.

The Pinajarro Bench is designed to address those concerns by allowing bikers to park where they sit or vice versa. In a nutshell, the slots between the metal bars of this triangular structure might be very familiar to cyclists as a place to rest their wheels and chain their bikes down. At the same time, however, the bench can accommodate wooden or metal seats that hang over the top of that triangle, allowing the same bench to be both a parking slot and chair for cyclists at the same time, letting them catch their breath while keeping an eye on their bike.

The concept, however, goes beyond a single configuration. For example, the entire bench can be occupied by seats only, preventing anyone from parking their bikes. Conversely, it can have no seats at all and functions purely as a parking space. The orientation of the seats can very, letting people sit beside each other or back to back. Even the seats themselves can have variations in design. In one scenario, the back of the seat can have a flat flap that serves as a tray for drinks or other items for people sitting on that side.

The Pinajarro Bench can be made from a wide variety of materials, but the concept has a particular bias for sustainable options. The base itself will always be made from hard steel to give the structure balance and strength, but the seats can be made from wood or metal. The latter might be a better choice for benches that will be exposed to the elements 24/7. Regardless of the materials, the concept offers a sustainable and rather ingenious way to give bikers their own special space while still keeping the doors open for other seating configurations. It might even inspire other people to embrace a healthier lifestyle, knowing that there is a safe and comfortable place for them to rest when they need to.
