Ultrasonic cleaner concept masquerades as a beautiful piece of sculptural art

We have recently become a bit more concerned not only about the air that we breathe but also about the objects we touch or put on our faces. In addition to air purifiers, there has been a rise in all sorts of sanitizing devices, from those using UV-C light to other less common methods like ultrasonic washers for glasses. What binds all these machines together is how they look like machines, things that would stand out and look out of place in a living room or an art gallery. These boxes and towers don’t really have to be designed that way, only that it’s the most common and, therefore, cheapest manufacturing option. Fortunately, the trend seems to be changing, and there have been a few more aesthetic redesigns of these sanitation devices, such as this ultrasonic cleaner that could easily be mistaken as an artistic pot among other decorative pieces in a room.

Designers: Sohee Park, Deric Jeon (above.studio)

Granted, an ultrasonic cleaner is not exactly a common household appliance even today, but they serve an important purpose in some locations, particularly those that may deal with bacteria or dirt that could be harmful not only to health but also to other objects within that space. That includes laboratories, museums, and art galleries where your accessories could accumulate dirt or microorganisms that, when transferred, could damage equipment or get people sick.

Ultrasonic cleaners fire off high-frequency sound waves through the liquid to scrub immersed objects, such as eyeglasses, without physically touching them to reduce the risk of damaging the objects themselves. These machines often come as uninspiring and very technical boxes with a small metallic basin embedded at the top. It’s the most convenient design for such a machine, but with today’s technologies, designs don’t have to be that limited, which is what this redesign concept tries to accomplish.

The metal tray that holds the cleaning liquid and objects to be cleaned is still there, but it’s now embedded in a bowl-like structure that better signifies its purpose, which is to hold something potentially important and precious. And instead of a clunky metal box with knobs and switches, this black bowl sits on top of a paraboloid structure that serves as its base, creating a shape that almost looks like a large goblet that is smooth and almost devoid of details. Standing beside vases and decorations, this ultrasonic cleaner would look very much at home, disguising its true nature and purpose until it’s actually needed.

The redesign doesn’t fundamentally change the function of an ultrasonic cleaner, though finer control might be lost due to the absence of those knobs and switches. It does, however, make the device look less daunting and more approachable, especially in places where a metal box would stand out as an eyesore. Such designs could even make cleaning and sanitizing devices more commonplace, increasing their use and popularity in households, which, in turn, could help prevent the spread of diseases inside homes.

Handheld steam cleaner can disinfect surfaces, eliminate odors, and de-wrinkle clothes with zero chemicals

Move over, Dyson. The SUMJet’s dry steam technology can do everything from sanitizing surfaces to removing wrinkles from clothes… and at $109, it won’t break the bank either.

With the ability to shoot out steam at 320°F, the SUMJet promises to be the ultimate handheld appliance. Using just dry steam (hot air with a much lower percentage of water molecules), the SUMJet provides a 100% chemical-free way to kill microorganisms, eliminate fungi, dust mites, and bedbugs, and sanitize surfaces. The dry steam also ensures that you can use the SUMJet on wooden surfaces without worrying about moisture ruining your furniture, and you can even use it on clothes, ironing them the way a garment steamer would, but much more effectively and without your clothes getting damp.

Designer: SUMJet

Click Here to Buy Now: $109 $219 (50% off). Hurry, less than 12 hours left! Raised over $200,000.

Designed to be a handheld appliance quite like a hairdryer or barcode scanner, SUMJet comes with a base that holds 3oz (90ml) of water and a trigger that deploys the dry steam. It takes roughly 2 minutes for the water to get heated to the right temperature once your SUMJet is plugged in, and all you need to then do is point it and press the trigger. The SUMJet works on cushions, pillows, curtains,, mattresses, tables, door handles, carpets, clothes, and even shoes. It deploys Superheated Ultra-fine Mist (that’s what the SUM in SUMJet stands for) at temperatures of 320°F that sanitizes, kills mites and bedbugs, de-wrinkles, and deodorizes without any chemicals. Its gaseous nature allows it to reach places where brushes, solvents, and sprays cant, cleaning those hard-to-reach areas in your house, garden, garage, and even your car. The SUMJet isn’t wireless so you’ll just need to make sure you have an outlet nearby.

SUMJet is dry and moisture-free. It evaporates quickly and will not get your items wet.

The SUMJet’s biggest upsell is its ability to use what’s called ‘dry steam’. While that may sound like marketing jargon for the most part, dry steam is in fact hot air with smaller, fewer water particles suspended in them. This steam has the ability to hold its temperature for longer (unlike wet steam that cools off almost immediately after passing through air), making it perfect for sanitizing surfaces and neutralizing germs that can’t survive hotter temperatures. Unlike with wet steam, SUMJet’s dry steam uses smaller water particles too, which allows it to effectively clean and de-wrinkle thicker clothes like coats, blazers, layered dresses too (something a regular iron or garment steamer wouldn’t be able to do effectively).

SUMJet is ultra-fine, its smaller molecule size enables it to penetrate thicker clothes and fabrics. Dry steam cleaning and ironing become easier and more effective.

Unlike traditional dry cleaners, the mist generated from SUMJet is both finer and hotter. As water is superheated to 320°F (160°C) and sprayed out, the SUM will travel through the item and obliterate everything from mud dirt, oil, sauce stain, mold fungal, dust mite and microorganism through intense heat.

Recorded at 34m/s high speed, the mist doesn’t lose speed until it has exited the item, taking all unwanted dirty stuff with it. It is also able to penetrate leather and bed mattress, which are difficult to clean otherwise.

SUMJet cleans with a jetstream. Its gaseous nature means it can reach places where brushes and liquid spray cannot.

As effective as SUMJet touts its dry steam technology to be, it works out to be sustainable and affordable in the long run too. The appliance works without using any chemical solvents, making it non-toxic for humans/pets as well as the environment, and it uses just water to create dry steam, saving money in the long run too. Moreover, it works as both a sanitizer for rooms and furniture as well as a garment steamer/iron, fulfilling the role of TWO appliances. Each SUMJet ships with a user manual, a refill bottle to fill up your SUMJet, a protective glove so you can hold objects and spray them directly, and even a 1-year warranty on the SUMJet device. The SUMJet ships internationally and will come with a plug-point design and power specifications to match your region.

This appliance envisions the future of folding and sterilizing children’s clothes

We have become more attuned to the sometimes unsanitary conditions of our homes in recent years. While harmful microorganisms may have been there all this time, their effects have been placed under a microscope thanks to concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus. There has been an uptick in interest and sales of air purifiers as well as the new breed of UV-C sanitizers. But while these take care of the air we breathe, they don’t really handle other places where germs, viruses, and other harmful substances can gather, especially on different kinds of surfaces. Clothing for children, in particular, requires special handling because of who wears them, and this simple yet innovative concept offers a way to ease the burden off parents and automate how clothes are kept neat and clean.

Designers: Junsik Oh, Da-yeon Choi, Kim Eun-seong

Perhaps next to taking out the trash, one of the most disliked chores is doing the laundry, probably because it’s actually a multi-step process that goes beyond just washing clothes. Even with smart washing machines and dryers, there are parts of the chore that can be considered manual and menial labor. And as if folding clothes and putting them away weren’t already tedious enough, people now also have to be mindful of keeping those clothes sanitized and germ-free.

The latter is a growing concern among parents today, especially with all the worries about viruses and germs in the air and sticking to surfaces. Anti-bacterial laundry soap only works during washing, but the clothes can be exposed any time afterward. That can even happen while a parent or sibling is folding a child’s clothes, potentially putting younger and more susceptible members of the family in danger.

FOL:U is an appliance concept that tries to do away with both the tediousness as well as the fears when folding clothes. It actually doesn’t fold clothes but rolls them up in a bundle for more space-efficient storage. It also sanitizes those clothes before they’re rolled, and you don’t even have to touch a single part of the fabric at any point in time.

The idea is that you’d pick up newly washed clothes with tongs that come with FOL:U and mount them inside. When you’re ready, you can soak the clothes in UV-C light to sanitize them. There’s even a tray on top that will let you also sanitize other items like baby bottles or toys simultaneously to save on time and energy. The machine then rolls the clothes into bundles that can be kept at the bottom of the tall box, which could also be sanitized along with the next batch of clothes.

With UV-C sanitization becoming more common inside households, it might only be a matter of time before appliance manufacturers turn their attention toward this use case. FOL:U might not be the most efficient machine for folding, and some might disagree about rolling clothes, but it does address the need for automating other parts of doing the laundry. It won’t be long before we reach a point where the entire process could be automated from start to finish, just like in some cartoons that portray future home appliances in a comical way.

This special built-in UV-C Sterilizer sanitizes your cleaning tools

Sterilizer 2022 Built-in Ultrasonic Cleaner UV-C 7

When the pandemic happened, many people suddenly became more conscious about their health. Alongside this health and fitness awareness is consciousness about the cleanliness of one’s surroundings.

UV-C has become a proven way to sterilize surfaces and personal stuff in the past two years. Sales for such sterilizers have gone up, and now they come in different forms and sizes. The Sterilizer 2022 is yet another concept product that brands can probably consider bringing into production.

Designer: Woojin Heo

Sterilizer 2022 Built-in Ultrasonic Cleaner UV-C 6

Korean designer Woojin Heo has shared his design for a cleaning system. It’s not exactly a personal sterilizer, but it is meant for cleaning tools you usually use at home. The goal was to develop a sterilizer for those standard cleaning tools we utilize every day. Sterilizing your cleaning tools is important to prevent contamination and bacterial growth.

Sanitization of every corner of the house is a must, especially during this pandemic. The virus still lurks so we must be careful with the things we handle or touch. A sterilizer can give people peace of mind, especially those who are very particular about cleanliness.

Sterilizer 2022 Built-in Ultrasonic Cleaner UV-C Details

The Sterilizer 2022 is a built-in Ultrasonic cleaner that sanitizes with UV-C. The idea of double cleansing is nothing new. However, you really need to clean those items you use to clean. Obviously, they can get dirty and be full of germs, especially those brushes used on the toilet.

Washing the cleaning tools with soap and hot water may not be enough. Some dip them in water with vinegar or baking soda, but they may still not be enough as bacteria don’t get killed easily. Only UV can kill most germs, so the designer came up with something that will make things sanitary and hygienic for everyone at home.

Sterilizer 2022 Built-in Ultrasonic Cleaner UV-C DESIGN

The sterilizing system is built into the wall. You can have it installed inside the bathroom or in your mudroom or laundry room. It’s also a way to keep the cleaning tools organized.

To make things easy to access, the design features a tilted system. The main ultrasonic sterilization container inside is a cylinder where you can insert a conventional cleaning brush. The system can be controlled via an interface outside of the product.

Sterilizer 2022 Built-in Ultrasonic Cleaner UV-C

The whole cleaning system is concealed but is easily accessible. An opening tilts to reveal the cleaning system inside. On top of the sterilization, the container is a water pipe. It is filled automatically, so cleaning can be continuous. The system utilizes ultrasonic cleaning to ensure any germs, bacteria, or foreign substance attached to the brush or plunger is removed. The second level of cleaning is done through UV-C sterilization.

This Mac Pro-inspired tabletop device simultaneously reads your body temperature and dispense sanitizer gel

Think of it as the alternative to the security guard at every doorstep who manually scans your temperature and dispenses sanitizer as you enter an establishment.

Some would claim that the Igiene is a dystopic device, others would agree that it’s a device that’s merely responding to the needs of the world right now. Nevertheless, the Igiene merely aims at streamlining healthy behavior in a way that’s easy for us to follow and implement. The small, sleek device can be mounted on a wall or placed on a tabletop, and uses a slew of sensors to detect your palm, capture your body temperature, and spray sanitizer on your hand. Touted as a ‘new age sanitizer dispenser’, Igiene’s built-in AI can detect the shape of your palm, capture your body temperature (while accounting for the weather outside), and dispense gel directly onto your palm by tracking its location, preventing sanitizer wastage. It also gives you a tabular view of all temperature readings, and can help track footfall during peak hours. Sounds a little too fancy? Well, that’s because Igiene’s features are more targeted towards establishments like offices, malls, museums, and other large public spaces than your average household.

With design cues that definitely remind me of the first-generation Mac Pro, the Igiene is a cuboidal gizmo with a hollow base that’s indicative of where to place your hand. A screen on the front displays a welcome message, and once your hand gets placed in the appropriate spot, Igiene reads your body temperature and shines either a red light and a buzzer if it detects a candidate who could potentially have a fever, or shines a green light and dispenses on your some sanitizer, effectively giving you the go-ahead to enter any premises.

The Igiene device has two different branches of users – firstly, the customers/visitors/patrons who get their hands sanitized on the device, and secondly, the people who actually buy and install Igiene devices in their premises. For the latter, Igiene makes the entire process of health and safety streamlined and data-driven. A companion Igiene app lets you manage multiple devices together in a single dashboard and even individually or collectively set the amount of sanitizer you want sprayed in one use (you can choose to have anywhere between 10ml and 20ml sprayed at a time). The app also lets you set your temperature checking units (°C or °F) and the temperature threshold that you want your Igiene to alert you based on. The app lets you check the sanitizer levels on your individual Igiene devices, and even sends you alerts when you’re running low on sanitizer, letting you fill the tank with a sanitizer of your choice. (Igiene works with all major sanitizer brands on the market).

The final frontier where Igiene really proves to be useful is in the way it collects data. Individual devices track usage frequency based on time of the day and of the year, giving you a comprehensive reading of footfall, sanitizer consumption, hotspots (which areas are frequented the most), and average temperature readings of your patrons. Igiene can account for the weather outside and adjust temperature readings accordingly (your body’s basal temperature changes based on whether it’s hot or cold outside). All these readings are compiled in an easy-to-digest set of reports that can be pretty valuable when it comes to planning and accounting for overall public safety.

Igiene is available in 3 sizes with varying tank capacities – 1.5L being the smallest, then 4L, and finally the largest 9L size. It runs on a 5V DC power input and needs to be plugged in to run. The Igiene starts at a super early bird price of $99 for the Mini (1.5L) and deliveries begin in March 2022.

This portable clothes dryer + sanitizer is the perfect accessory for those who can’t wait to start traveling!

Got stuck with a single pair of undergarments on a travel trip during the monsoon season? Well, things are ideally embarrassing in such a situation, but no more with this portable dryer and sanitization accessory.

Travelling frequently comes with its own set of hassles – cleaning clothes, especially undergarments being one. A quick way to get over this predicament a portable dryer is the best option. This small little dryer comparable to the size of your big-screen smartphone is the perfect accessory for all your outdoor expeditions and busy travel days.

Designed by industrial design team KIWI DESIGN, the portable washer employs a quick sanitization technology to do the dirty job of cleaning your messy underwear, vest, and socks in a jiffy. Anything that fits the small dryer and washer is good to go –handkerchiefs, masks, or gloves being one. The bottom section of the portable machine made from super-elastic nickel-titanium alloy expands to the shape of an inverted lampshade to support the drying bag.

Since sanitation is an integral part of our current lifestyle, the portable dryer gets rid of any bacterial or fungal build-up in the undergarments thanks to the high-temperature sanitization. This in fact doubles as a dryer for the clothing in the consequent step. In just 15-30 minutes the gadget readies you for a fresh start to the day.

Not only regular washing, but the portable dryer is very useful for the moisture-laden monsoon days when the chances of developing mold, odor, or bacteria in undergarments are high. With a bit more input into the design of the portable dryer and more added functionality, it could be a consumer product that’ll be hugely popular with buyers.

This portable ‘smart’ spray bottle can turn regular water into sanitizer!

Relying on a process that turns regular tap water into Electrolysed (EO) water, the IOON spray gives you an instant, effective, non-toxic sanitizer that you can spray on everything from your hands to door-handles, and from elevator buttons to cutlery (and even food!)

When electrolyzed or ionized, water breaks down into a solution of hypochlorous acid and sodium hydroxide, which acts as a remarkable detergent and disinfectant, instantly killing bacteria, cleansing off harmful chemicals from food, purifying the air, as well as busting odors. The technology, which has existed for over 4 decades, creates an all-purpose cleaning solution that replaces the need for carpet-cleaners, floor-cleaners, room-fresheners, car-fresheners, fruit and vegetable purifiers, and general disinfectants. Needless to say, the electrolyzed water is food-safe, child-safe, and eliminates the need to clean your house with chemicals that aren’t healthy… and the IOON, a small, portable spraying device, can electrolyze and spray the water directly from within its hand-held, wireless form factor.

The IOON comes with a small, replaceable silver-ion cartridge that aids in the electrolysis/ionization process. The cartridge lasts anywhere from 9-12 months depending on how often you use it, and it forms the only replaceable part of the entire design. The rest of the IOON sanitizer is for keeps, lasting you years while a small sanitizer bottle could just do the job for months before being thrown away. Using the IOON is simple… just fill it up with any kind of water and ensure that the IOON device is charged (using the MicroUSB charging port below). Once charged, the IOON takes about 20 minutes to ionize the water, making it potent enough to last up to 3 full days. Once ionized, the water is just as good as, if not more effective than your isopropyl-alcohol sanitizer… except it’s also safe on the skin, non-toxic, food-grade, can replace a bunch of other household disinfectants, and can even eliminate odor by dismantling odor molecules. When it’s done, the tiny bottle slips right into your pocket or bag, letting you carry it anywhere and sanitize anything!

3D-printed attachment turns your foamed handwash soap into Mickey Mouse!

In what possibly may be the most ingenious way to get kids to wash their hands more thoroughly and often, Slic3DArt’s Mickey Soap Dispenser Attachment turns that blob of foam into the silhouette of the most famous mouse in the world! The Mickey Soap Dispenser Attachment isn’t an officially licensed product from Disney, but is rather a clever fan-made product that retrofits onto most foaming handwash dispenser nozzles (although the designer recommends Bath and Body Works soap bottles). The attachment basically helps distribute the foamed handwash into three large blobs instead of one, making it resemble Mickey Mouse’s iconic circular head and ears (or Deadmau5, if you’re an electronic music aficionado).

The 3D printed attachment is pretty simple to install and even simpler to use. It comes in three solid colors (that gold one looks rather nice), as well as two decorated variants that resemble Mickey and Minnie. When assembled, it works almost flawlessly, distributing just the perfect amount of soap needed to clean hands… and that adorable mouse-head works as the perfect playful element to get kids to wash their hands more often, keeping them safe and sanitized!

Are your fruits and vegetables truly germ-free? This tabletop food-sanitizer ensures they will be…

I don’t mean to sound alarmist, but this global pandemic has surely raised questions about personal safety and how we could keep ourselves from coming in contact with potential germs and infections. The Elepsy helps address concerns for people who are worried their food could be potentially contaminated. While fresh produce like meat and eggs get cooked before consumption (ensuring that any microorganisms like bacteria and viruses are instantly killed off in the high heat), fruits and vegetables don’t share that advantage. The Elepsy ensures that your fruits and veggies are safe for consumption by thoroughly cleaning them beforehand.

Designed to be a safe sanitization-station for your fruits and vegetables, the Elepsy uses a dual-stage process to make sure your food is immaculately clean before you consume it. The product can be broadly separated into three parts – A carafe that lets you measure the water needed to clean your fruits/vegetables, a sanitization-unit that carefully cleans your food, and an outer tray which you can use to place your food after it’s been cleaned. The design intuitively guides the user through the process while the overall aesthetic helps convey the message of cleanliness, minimalism, and simplicity.

Step one involves lifting the transparent carafe off the base and filling it up with water. Once the carafe is filled, place your food into the Elepsy’s sanitation-tub and pour the water from the carafe in. A single knob/button on the product’s body lets you turn to choose a cycle and press to confirm. Once confirmed, the Elepsy begins its dual-stage cleaning process by first scrubbing dirt off your food using ultrasonic vibrations passed through water, and then sanitizing it by electrolyzing the water to instantly kill any germs in a non-toxic way without using any chemicals. As soon as the cycle is over, a satisfying bell-sound lets you know your fruits and veggies are clean, and that you can take them out and arrange them on the external tray for quickly drying off before you consume directly, use for prep/garnish, or fix yourself a nice, healthy salad!

The Elepsy vegetable + fruit sanitizer is a concept that was created as a collaborative project between the students of Umeå Institute of Design and Electrolux to think about post-Covid-19 home solutions.

UV-C enabled coat-hanger helps sanitize your coat and belongings as you enter your home

The pandemic gave Sergio Spinel, an interior architect and furniture designer, a very unique opportunity to relook his craft as something that’s more than what most people perceive it as. Decor serves a very fixed set of purposes, combining form and function, but with COVID-19, Spinel realized his decor could promote safety too. Meet the POD, the coat-hanger reinvented.

Calling the POD a coat-hanger seems a little reductionist, now that I think of it. The device gives you a place to hang your coats, hats, place your shoes, store/charge your phone, keep your keys, and even provide a dedicated hook for your face-mask. Designed to be the last piece of furniture you interact with on your way out, and the first when you return from the outdoors, the POD stores your belongings, while also sanitizing them with PCO and UVC technology. The vertical wood-veneer pillar comes with a sliding door that opens when you approach it (thanks to a motion sensor at its base), revealing the organizing space within. Hooks give you a place to hang your coat, hats, and even your masks, while a tray at waist-level provides the perfect place to keep your wallet/purse, keys, and even wirelessly charge your smartphone.

The POD uses a variety of technologies to upgrade the furniture experience into something that explores the word ‘functional’ more literally. The sliding door ensures you never really have to touch the POD, and a partnership with California-based IRTRONIX gives POD state-of-the-art sanitizing tech. Once the door of the POD closes, a combination of photocatalytic air filtration along with UV-C rays helps kill microorganisms that may be lingering on the surface of your clothes and EDC, while even eliminating odor-molecules too, making your coat, hat, shoes, and masks fresh again, while ensuring your wallet, keys, and purse are germ-free, and your phone is sanitized and charged. A typical POD cycle will run 2 hours unless you interrupt the cycle.

Available in 3 sizes, the POD approaches furniture with a very different design brief. Its wooden pillar-esque form feels visually commanding, while also complementing the space, and the POD even works as an ambient floor-lamp when it isn’t actively disinfecting your belongings. However, this novel approach and avant-garde tech comes at a price. The POD Mini retails for $810 a piece, while Magnus, the largest variant, can cost as much as $1595. Some may say it’s perhaps too expensive for the average home, but I can totally see the POD finding its place in hotel rooms and the like!
