A portable camping stove meets DHL’s design language creating a briefcase sized outdoor must-have!

It’s no secret that camping requires a certain amount of know-how. For instance, knowing how to get fires going, knowing how to pitch a tent and conserve water, how to cook and make your way through a forest unscathed are skills that will help trips to the outdoors feel less stressful and a lot more comfortable. With so many people camping nowadays, designers at PDF Haus have conceptualized a minimal camp grill called Shelf, a portable gas grill with folding shelves and a table.

Developed in the design language of DHL, PDF Haus aimed to give Shelf a simple box silhouette with a freewheeling attitude, taking inspiration from the color scheme, materials and finishes often chosen by DHL for their vehicles and brand aesthetic. The grill even comes with DHL decals and tags that can be adhered to the metallic grill’s front case that turns into its table extension. While most gas stoves come with a separate carrying case, Shelf’s entire grill has been turned into one that can be consolidated and carried away. Shaped and carried like a slim briefcase, two metal clasps open and slide out to reveal the Shelf’s grill and supplementary table space. Just beneath the grill, Shelf includes two retractable shelves that create more space for whoever’s cooking to place their spices, utensils, or tools. Blooming from Shelf’s underside like an awning, the shelves, and the sliding tables nearly double Shelf’s overall area.

Comprising a total thickness of 50mm when laid flat, Shelf’s slim frame allows it to slip easily onto any camp packing list. Reaching 278mm in height and 400mm in width, the compact build of Shelf’s entire grill is only given more weight once propane gas containers are inserted into its underside to activate the grill and get to cooking. Battery operated, Shelf features a battery inlet underneath as well that gives power to the grill’s automatic ignition system.

Designer: Dahae Lee x PDF Haus

Shelf’s simple box frame is reminiscent of DHL’s stripped-down brand aesthetic.

The grill’s shelf awnings remain hidden, folded into Shelf’s underbelly.

Metal clasps unlock to allow Shelf’s table extension to slide and provide further storage options.

A rubber handle allows users to carry Shelf like a slim briefcase.

The grill features an intuitive, recognizable control panel that allows users to adjust temperature and flame settings.

Shelf also comes equipped with space for a detachable drip pan, battery inlet, and a fuel nozzle.

Conceptualized in an array of different colors, Shelf is the perfect camping companion.

Decals and extra tags from DHL can be attached to Shelf’s metallic surface.

Anthropologie’s reusable cutlery nest into each other to become an easy-to-carry bundle

There are a combination of reasons why people just prefer disposable cutlery over carrying their own… probably the biggest of them is the fact that the flatware we use at home isn’t designed for travel. Sustainability’s biggest barrier is that it isn’t always the most convenient of solutions – although that’s where some good old-fashioned design thinking and problem-solving kick in. Anthropologie’s Reusable Travel Flatware makes it easy to have all your cutlery together with you wherever you travel. With a neat nesting design, the three-piece set becomes a singular bundle that slides right into your travel bag or backpack, making it easy to carry on that camping trip, or even to work where you can bust it out during your lunch-break.

Made from 100% recyclable and sustainable polyamide thermoplastic that’s manufactured using renewable resources, the Reusable Travel Flatware champions convenience over everything else. Their clever design makes them easy to carry around as a set, and unlike other travel cultery, they don’t compromise on shape/size/comfort to be portable.

Designer: Anthropologie

Each travel flatware set isn’t just designed to be reusable, it’s manufactured out of recyclable plastic too, which means that after years of use, you can safely dispose of it without worrying about generating waste. Providing a much more sustainable alternative to single-use disposable cutlery, one set of Anthropologie’s Reusable Travel Flatware replaces 250 disposable cutlery sets per year, greatly helping to reduce your carbon footprint.

This vacuum pump merges the functionality of ziplock bags with a hard casing to reduce your leftover food wastage!

Storing leftovers in airtight zip-lock bags is a trick hard to follow. While mastering the dance of rolling your food tight and simultaneously sliding its bag closed might teach you patience, the prospect of leftovers always seems to circle back for seconds, and they’re just aren’t enough bags in the kitchen. Zhuhai Kelitong Electronic Co. Ltd., the company that brought us electric wine openers, has recently been recognized by iF Design for its new set of vacuum-sealed containers and automatic vacuum pump that render zip-lock bags a thing of the past.

Designed to provide food containers with high-vacuum storage to curb bacterial growth, Zhuhai’s vacuum storage system boasts that it can keep your leftovers sealed for three to five times longer than the standard food storage container. The hard plastic containers come with pre-delineated food zones that help users separate their food items and with a vacuum-sealed lid that works as the base for the accompanying pump. Zhuhai designed the vacuum pump to be automatic so that once it’s placed on top of a container’s lid and activated, the pump immediately begins pulling out the excess air inside of the container until it reaches a high-vacuum degree of -0.03 Mpa.

Each food storage container is constructed using FDA-approved Tritan materials, which means that the plastic used is BPA-free and can safely be reheated in microwave ovens. The designers built the food containers to be 70% lighter than common glassware containers so that once the containers have been vacuum-sealed, they can just as easily go into the lunch box and be transported anywhere. Once the container is ready for use again, the lid comes easily apart from the container so that each component can be properly cleaned and prepared for its next use.

Designer: Zhuhai Kelitong Electronic Co. Ltd.

Coming in three parts, each vacuum pump and lid attach to different containers.

Once the vacuum pump is activated, then excess air that could lead to bacterial growth is sucked up from the container.

An automatic vacuum pump works by draining in the container’s excess air until a vacuum degree of -0.03 Mpa is reached.

Each food storage container can be easily disassembled and put back together for cleaning and storing.

Designed to be 70% lighter than average glass food storage containers, these containers from Zhuhai are perfect to bring for lunch.

This bento-inspired three-tier lunch box has a carrying case that doubles as a tablecloth so you can always enjoy a proper meal!

Busy workdays sometimes mean compromise for our meals. Instead of sitting down to fully enjoy a meal and our full lunch hour, we’re three-quarters of the way through a sandwich the size of our face five minutes after closing time. As relaxing and recalibrating as sitting down to eat a proper meal can be, work always seems to come first. SOC is a lunch box created by designers at Midea who hope to bring back the ceremony of enjoying a meal, even during the busier workdays.

SOC Lunch Box is a three-tier lunch container packaged inside a magnetic carrying case that doubles as a tablecloth. The three levels of SOC provide space for the user’s different food items to be separated and neatly arranged, with enough room inside for utensils and a metal cover that keeps the food steamed throughout the day. With three enclosed compartments, each meal taken from SOC will taste as fresh as when it was made. Once each meal is properly placed inside SOC, the closed lunch box gets folded into its case which securely locks with a magnetic buckle.

The lunch box itself gets wrapped up in a magnetic carrying case that unfolds to create a tablecloth or placemat for mealtime. The tablecloth is easy to clean and comprises three layers, made from PU anti-fouling, temperature insulation support, and silica gel material. Included to encourage users to make a ceremony of each meal, the placement is meant to keep the meals from spilling on desks.

Everyone is veering towards sustainability! Living sustainably, consciously, and considerately has become imperative now. And traveling shouldn’t be an exception! We all love jet-setting off on holidays, and it’s now our moral duty towards the environment to vacation as sustainably as possible. From staying at hotels and resorts that support eco-tourism to using travel products that are sustainable, there are many minor steps we can take that will contribute to a major change. In this spirit of green traveling, we’ve curated a collection of product designs that promise to make your next trip as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible! These are products that are not only conscious of the environment but also capable of catering to your needs as efficiently as possible. These unique designs could completely transform how we travel and vacation. Enjoy!

PriestmanGoode’s sustainable inflight meal service has completely transformed the conventional meal tray we are so used to receiving on a flight. “We’ve used a wide range of materials for our design concepts,” says Rowan. And they’ve kept their word. Each element is either partially edible, reusable, soluble, or biodegradable. They’ve ditched plastic meal trays for partially edible ones made from coffee grains and husks mixed with a lignin binder. The miscellaneous food containers that fit into the tray have been made from wheat bran. Banana leaf or algae have been combined with rice husk to create lids for side dishes like salad. Whereas a wafer has been used as a dessert lid, hence the materials symbolically reflect the food. Instead of having several pieces of single-use cutlery, the handy ‘spork’- a combination of a fork and spoon- made from coconut wood has been adopted. The usual plastic containers for milk or sauces have been abandoned in exchange for edible pods created from soluble seaweed.

A team of designers created RHITA – a suitcase that is super easy to assemble and disassemble which makes it easier to repair or recycle. “Every year hundred thousand of discarded luggage caused by damaged wheels, handles, shells or shells that are deformed or damaged by collision, hard to be repaired or disassemble for recycling, bringing great impact to the environment. Hence, design for assembly and disassembly allows the suitcase easy to repair or recycle, reduced parts by simplifying the structure and minimized material used, downsize shipping volume to decrease carbon footprint boosting sustainability,” says the design team. RHITA’s simplified structure reduces the number of parts used in production by 70% when compared to traditional suitcases. Even the space needed for transportation has been reduced by 33%. It features an innovative hinge system and a unique installation method – no glue or rivet for fixation, no sewing of the inner lining, maximizing the space inside as well as a quick fasten and loosen wheel mechanism.

The Green Box is an innovative solution that aligns hotel stays with your sustainable lifestyle choices! It is an amenity kit designed to help hotels to transition to a circular economy and avoid the waste generated by tens-of-millions of amenity kits are thrown away by hotel chains – we use them once but they last forever on our planet. Green box is made from compostable plastic which will let hotels industrially compost and organically recycle the items in a controlled environment. The design goes beyond providing functional value and also aims to educate guests about the material and its impact to encourage better choices even after the vacation ends. Each box comes with a disposable bin for the room to familiarize guests with the new kind of waste stream. The guests will sort materials as compostable and non-compostable by simply following the color grading – green for compostable and white for general waste.

PANGEA’s Bamboo Adventure Towel 2.0 is carbon-negative – they pull more carbon out of the atmosphere than they put in, leaving the earth in a better condition than it was before. Unlike most travel towels which come made from plastic microfibers, the Bamboo Adventure Towel 2.0 has absolutely no plastic used in its construction. As its name suggests, it comes crafted from 100% bamboo fibers, dyed with natural dyes, and woven into a waffle pattern for effective absorption and exfoliation. Designed for the outdoors, the towels are up to thrice as absorbent as your average microfiber towel and are naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial. In fact, the towels even come with reinforced slits on the corners, so you can suspend them and use them as makeshift sunshades, or even wear them as cloaks or ponchos.

It’s no secret that washing your derriere with water is more efficient, hygienic, and sustainable as compared to toilet paper. After all, you don’t wipe your dishes clean with a tissue after eating in them, so why use tissues on your behind? I’ll admit, it’s a culture-shock changing how you clean your behind, but given that the US alone uses more than 6 billion rolls of toilet paper annually, it’s an ecological crisis we can’t ignore. Besides, ironically enough, toilet paper takes tons of water to produce. Using a battery-powered motor and an internal water tank that you can top off before you head to the loo, Sonny generates a micro-shower to help you clean up after your business, effectively, hygienically, and sustainably. With an easy-to-use interface, Sonny comes with normal and high-spray settings that shoot water for anywhere between 25-40 seconds (depending on the spray intensity), enough to clean your behind. Besides, much like a bidet, Sonny can even be used on your nether regions too, to keep things hygienic and fresh.

This gives a completely new meaning to the word ‘papercut’! Say hello to the Paper Razor, a sustainable alternative to the disposable plastic razor. The Paper Razor, as its name suggests, comes with an all-paper body and sports a metal blade-head on top. Designed to be flat-packed, the single-use razor comes completely unfolded and can easily be put together in a matter of seconds by merely folding in the sides and the top to create a rigid, ergonomic razor with a grippy handle. Its origami-inspired design gives it as much strength and maneuverability as a plastic razor, while minimizing the use of plastic by as much as 98%. The result? A razor that can be easily flat-packed and shipped, used, and then disposed of… safely, of course. It’s perfect to carry around and use on your work or leisure trips!

Designed to be a reusable travel cutlery set with a difference, the Cliffset doesn’t just focus on portability, it focuses on maintenance too, by being perhaps the only cutlery set I’ve seen that comes with its own cleaning tool to clean up after you’re done eating! Everything fits in a portable pouch that’s small enough to fit in your pocket or slip into a backpack, and is designed to be carried everywhere you go and be cleaned and reused over and over again, giving you the comfort of knowing that you’re using your OWN cutlery (as opposed to using cutlery in restaurants) made from reusable materials, which you don’t need me to tell you is a much better option compared to the use-and-throw plastic cutlery that pollutes our planet and oceans.

These cork headphones are another great addition to that list and show us that gadgets can also go green – you would be surprised to know how much plastic goes in making a simple pair of headphones. Weighing only 64 grams  (0.14 lbs) these headphones are super light! Cork is a versatile material that is being explored to design sustainable products. It is non-allergic, resilient, sound insulating, moisture-proof, and soft to touch. If you are an everyday headphone user, you know that there is a lot of wear and tear that happens and instead of repairing, we usually just upgrade which increases our plastic consumption. Cork headphones are easy to repair and dismiss thanks to an assembly based on the compressibility of the material. There is no glue, no upholstery, no screws involved – just cork, simple electric parts, steel, and foam. These are perfect for listening to your favorite tunes on those long travel journeys!

The ClickStraw addresses the inherent flaws of the straws before it. Plastic straws are an environmental hazard, paper straws become soggy, bamboo straws end up developing molds, and metal straws are difficult to clean. Made from high quality and sustainable TPE, the ClickStraw is designed to be used multiple times, and moreover, is easy to maintain. Its hollow, tubular structure can be opened out completely, allowing you to rinse the inner surface of the straw, giving it a deep clean. The ClickStraw’s innovation lies in a ziplock-bag-style snapping fixture and a live-hinge that run along the length of the tube. To clean the straw, slide your thumb in and it opens up. Once you’re done, click it shut like a zip-lock bag and you’ve got yourself a spanking clean straw that doesn’t degrade, get dirty, or worse, corrode like your metal straws. You can now carry your own reusable and sustainable straw whenever you travel, instead of using those pesky single-use plastic straws!

There’s a certain, undeniable convenience to the plastic bottle. It’s easy to just take off the shelf, drink from, and then throw away once you’re done. You don’t need to worry about carrying a bulky bottle along with you that occupies the same amount of space, even when empty. The convenience of plastic is addictive, but it comes at a price. There’s a garbage island the size of Texas floating around in the pacific sea, COVERED with plastic bottles we used and threw away without batting an eyelid. Plastic bottles are preferred because they’re more convenient than carrying your own bulky empty bottles around with you, but the Origami Bottle may have a solution to that convenient problem. Designed to be reusable, but more importantly, be collapsible, the Origami Bottle folds down to 20% of its original size when not in use. Small enough to easily fit into any bag without occupying much space, the Origami Bottle neatly folds down to a nice, portable puck that’s easy and convenient to carry around. When you need to fill it up, the bottle opens up to a full size of 25oz (750ml).

Turner designed Carnerie – a conceptual device that will let you grow your own meat in the future! Cultured meat is the process of growing meat from cells extracted from animals. Many experts believe that cultured meat offers us the opportunity to produce meat with significantly reduced environmental impacts and without slaughtering animals. The technology is being rapidly developed across the world and is beginning to be introduced to some high-end restaurants but there has been discussion about whether one day we may be able to grow our own meat from animal cells in our own kitchens. Carnerie is a ‘grow your own meat’ device for around twenty years in the future. It is controlled by an app, whereby the user is able to order cell capsules from local farms in order to grow a variety of different types of meat. This conceptual, speculative project is designed to help us visualize what this future scenario could be like and whether it’s a future that we would buy into.

Hatch Duo has designed The Walker Juicer, a masticating juicer without the bulk. Offering a slower, more concentrated grind, masticating juicers do not incorporate too much heat or oxygen into their juicing process. In regard to nutritional value, masticating juicers are largely preferred over centrifugal juicers. However, masticating juicers typically take up more space than centrifugal juicers since their slower grind generally requires a longer spout and auger. The Walker Juicer consolidates the parts of a masticating juicer and places them in its main body to create a more compact build without compromising each juice’s nutritional value.

Clearly meant for people who’d like to live out the game Fruit Ninja in real life, the Ninja Cutting Board & Knife from OTOTO is an adorable little kitchen accessory that makes mise en place fun! The board comes shaped like a little Ninja with a steely glare that means business, and a katana docked into its back. Whip the katana out and chop away your veggies fruits, and other ingredients on the Ninja board before washing, wiping and docking the katana/knife back in. Don’t forget to say “Arigato Sensei” to the Ninja once you’re done!

Designed to replace those wasteful single-use plastic vacuum bags, and that expensive vacuum sealer that comes along with it, SealVax’s bags are reusable, infinitely washable, and come with their own pocket-friendly pump that is powered by your smartphone. The pump, which is no larger than a thumb-drive or a car-charger, locks into the air valves on the SealVax bags and comes with two ports at the opposite end – a Type-C port, and a Lightning connector. Designed to plug into any iPhone or Android smartphone, the vacuum pump runs on your smartphone’s battery, sucking the air out of the SealVax bag in mere seconds. Worried about liquids in your bag? The SealVax even has a liquid isolator, which transfers fluids into a separate chamber (instead of sucking them into the vacuum). Once you’re done, unplug everything and you’ve got yourself air-locked, vacuum-packed freshness!

Everyone holds their knives slightly differently. There’s an incredible amount of nuance in the way everyone’s wrist moves as they operate knives while chopping, slicing, scouring, or peeling, so the guys at Écriture had a pretty brilliant idea – “What if the knives weight-adjusted based on how you used them?” It sounds like a bizarre question, but to be honest, it’s all in the physics of knife-work. When you need your wrists to put in the work, a knife with a heavy handle serves best. When you need a knife’s blade to do the work for you, a heavier blade allows for better cutting, so rather than having different knives for different applications, the Ecriture Perfect Knives come with a switch on the handle that lets you shift the knife’s center of gravity. A sliding weight inside the hollow handle allows you to decide the knife’s balancing point, giving you better control based on your technique. The Ecriture Perfect Knives come in a set of 6 exquisitely designed blades for handling a variety of tasks. From mincing to filleting, julienning to slicing, there’s a blade for every occasion and a patented weight-switching mechanism in each handle for every individual.

Designed so that you can snap your existing spoons and forks to their form, the Anytongs can turn your cutlery and flatware into a pair of instant tongs. The Anytongs were made to be a smaller, more universal alternative to the tongs you use and own. Its compact design lets it easily occupy less than half the space of your pair of tongs, while the ability to slot your own spoons and forks into it means you can use it for anything from grilling and flipping, to serving and stirring. A well-calibrated torsion-spring sits at one end of the Anytongs, giving it a wonderful snappy-springy experience that makes it incredibly easy to use, while rubber pads on its tips allow for comfortable use.

The 254nm UVC light used in the ChopBox is small and has a limited angle with only a small gap in the boards when in use. It is 100% safe for all humans to be around and near this light. The UVC light will automatically switch off when you separate the two boards or you can press the second button on the control panel to turn it off. Samsung Barr, Berk Can Yıldız’ modular take on Samsung’s kitchen tools, is a single-engine, modular device used for any type of cooking that might require blending, grinding, or heating. The Samsung Barr functions as either a kettle or soup maker with integrated heating elements and also as a blender, grinder, or juicer for use without added heating elements. The product’s large, front-facing button functions as the unit’s control panel. The touchscreen dial’s usability is akin to a round thermostat’s – its circular formation allows users to adjust aspects of cooking, like levels of temperature and the duration of timers, simply by dragging haptic sensors one way or the other around the screen’s perimeter. Compatible with the Samsung Health app from Google Play, Barr also connects to its app that provides new recipes and health information.

The design lets you have access to fresh greenery 365 days a year without sacrificing any counter space or causing a mess. It is compact and works wonderfully for small urban apartments or big suburban houses. What makes this herb garden unique its compactness because it makes it invisible in your kitchen space. Designer Igor Abakumov drew inspiration from his own life experience for this. “My mom is a real culinary virtuoso and she often complains about the lack of specific greens in the store. And then I got the idea to design a home garden that will be built into the kitchen and will delight with greenery all year round,” he explains.

This food bowl’s clever design uses science and psychology to help you achieve portion control

I recently read a study that addressed that the part of the brain that’s responsible for making you ‘feel full’ isn’t the same part of the brain that manages your food cravings. It’s why Joey from Friends could still have a slice of pie even after demolishing an entire turkey in the episode that guest-starred Brad Pitt. While obviously the episode was rooted in fiction, it highlights a phenomenon often referred to as ‘dessert stomach’, where even after an incredibly large meal, most people could still find themselves craving a bit of dessert… no matter how full they are. As complex as the brain is when it comes to craving certain types of foods (as addiction, for combating stress, or for comfort), food scientists have devoted significant efforts towards understanding how the brain responds to food, its aromas, its presentation, and how to control it all to either build or reduce appetites. The IGGI bowl is the culmination of a few of those findings.

Designed to help trick your brain into eating mindfully by controlling portions, the IGGI is a Stoneware bowl that uses food psychology and ‘Calorie Cloaking’ to help you eat 30% less but still feel satiated. It sports a false curved bottom that makes the bowl look full while still having 33%  less food, along with a red interior that helps curb your appetite more than a white plate. Moreover, the red color also alters your perception of food, driving you towards eating green vegetables to make your food ‘look balanced’. Paired along with the IGGI app, the two form a system called Meal Mindfulness. The bowl’s design along with the meal recommendations on the app (curated by nutrition experts, dieticians, and chefs) allows you to eat healthy and hearty meals and feel satiated at the end of them. The app also provides recipes to guide you through food-prep, and each IGGI bowl ships with 15 Recipe Cards that help you build tasty meals, and 15 Mindful Habit Cards that encourage you to develop healthy nutrition habits. The Meal Mindfulness system helps you be more conscious of what you’re eating and how much you’re eating too, allowing you to be more faithful to your diet while still feeling ‘full’ after a meal.

The IGGI bowl comes at a time when daily routines and habits are in flux, and binge-eating has become all too common (I’ve developed some unhealthy habits of my own too). The bowl provides a set of nifty tools for people looking to cleverly portion-control their food consumption and keep an eye on their calorie intake while being “diet-agnostic”, allowing you to portion-control your meals no matter what your dietary preferences are. The recipe-cards help you build individual parts of your meal too, giving you the freedom to mix and match cards to build the meals you like or the meals that help you finish any leftovers you may have lying in the fridge. The bowl’s Japanese-inspired Stoneware design gives it an incredibly premium visual and tactile appeal while being microwave-friendly and easy to wash. The bowl’s wide design cleverly gives the appearance of abundance while still holding lesser than a plate would. Moreover, its curved base helps easily portion-control your meals by cutting down space within the bowl by a third in volume. Each IGGI bowl also comes with a divider that you can slide in to compartmentalize the bowl’s space, along with a leak-proof bamboo lid and neoprene case that allow you to travel with your meals!

We recommend consulting a nutritionist or health professional before using the IGGI bowl or app to portion your meals.

IGGI – Effortless Weight Loss & Calorie Cloaking

The IGGI is a science-based portion control eating bowl that was thoughtfully conceived to make eating balanced meals easier than ever.

The portable, eco-friendly bowl uses food psychology and ‘Calorie Cloaking’ for effortless weight loss by tricking your brain into eating a third less than you normally would.

Calorie Cloaking at Work

Calorie Cloaking is when you use the illusion of more food to hack your brain and stomach into thinking you’re eating more than you are. This works because hunger and eating are guided by the more primitive part of your brain, known as the ‘animal brain’ (or the amygdala). The animal brain does not want you eating less—it wants to store up fat for the winter.

A study in the National Library of Medicine proved that how much your brain thinks you’re eating, directly relates to how full you feel.

Science Behind IGGI Bowl’s Design

False Bottom – IGGI’s false bottom removes 33% of space in the bowl. You see a satisfying full bowl of food, but due to the convex bottom, you eat a third less.

Red Color – IGGI isn’t red just because of Japanese influence—studies have shown that eating from a red plate vs. a white plate reduces consumption by up to 22%.

Bowl Shape – IGGI Bowl naturally has hard limits (the bowl rim), unlike portion control plates that can be piled high and still remain inside the portion dividers. The bowl never delivers more than 600 calories when you follow the IGGI guidelines or included recipes.

Why IGGI Looks So Big – The convex bottom keeps the bowl looking full but ensures no more than 400-600 calories fit inside. The bowl is 19.5cm/7.7in which is .5cm smaller than the universal bowl size of 20cm.

Another criterion that is being focused on a lot these days is Sustainability! Sustainable and eco-friendly designs really seal the deal, as ignoring and paying no heed to the needs of the environment is no more an option. So we’ve curated a collection of myriad takeout boxes, ranging from easily portable and ergonomic ones to environment-friendly ones as well. Enjoy!

Pizza Hut + Ogilvy designed a limited edition pizza-box with a foosball table built into the lid! The Foosball Pizza Box was created as a warm-up for the Europa League which begins October 22nd (Get it, Warm-up? Pizza?). Wendy Leung, marketing director of Pizza Hut explains, ‘the Pizza Hut Foosball Pizza Box was a great opportunity to remind football fans that pizza goes best with their football. Launched at a time when everyone’s stuck in their houses, the box hopes to drum up enthusiasm, interest, and positivity. While diehard fans are just waiting to go out and support their teams or play their own games of street football, the Pizza Hut Foosball Pizza Box provides a great safe alternative, allowing you to battle it out with your friends in the comfort and safety of your own homes. Winner gets an extra slice, perhaps? And if there’s a tie, just equally divide the pie!

Molabox is like if the tiffin box had its own Macbook Air moment. It comes with a collapsible silicone construction and a svelte metallic outer case that, when collapsed, makes it look like you’re carrying an SSD around with you. However, when you want to store food in the Molabox, it expands to its true height, giving you enough storage for a good meal, along with cutlery, and even a partition too, in case you want to carry two separate items… but most importantly, the Molabox doesn’t contain any disposable parts or virgin plastics. The case is made from recycled aluminum, while the Molabox’s lid and reusable cutlery are entirely crafted from recycled plastic. It works perfectly as both a lunchbox and a takeaway box!

Styrofoam has a 24-hour lifespan but it is formed with materials that can last for 500 years, can you imagine the landfills at the rate we consume this product? “We need to stop and think about the environmental costs of our lifestyle,” says Dungan when talking about the notoriously single-use packaging that has been adopted worldwide. The box itself is so widely recognized that it has transcended continents and languages, so Dungan’s design aims to leverage its easy recall value while delivering a stronger message on sustainable living. The product is rightly called Leftovers and hopes to be a design that disrupts the normalization of polystyrene before it can become a mass-scale direct solution to the problem, the first step is to educate. For convenience and functionality, it is also dishwasher safe and recyclable. The redesigned box has a stainless steel body that enhances its functionality as a reusable food container while also bringing attention to how one small change can reduce the amount in our trash can.

Created as a part of the Wallpaper* Re-Made project, these bio-composite containers are modeled to look like bento-boxes with a modular design that stacks up as your order increases, resulting in one larger box rather than multiple smaller boxes. This unique format provides a useful alternative to plastic containers (as it’s waterproof and leakproof too) and eventually reduces components by removing elements like lids (since the containers stack over and cover each other). Materials used to craft the packaging meet a range of criteria too, being heatproof, lightweight, recyclable, and insulating. The bio-composite polymer used to mold the containers themselves are made from cocoa-bean shells (a by-product of the cacao industry) by designer Paula Nerlich. The outer bag that carries the containers is made from all-natural materials too, including mycelium to insulate the interiors, a bioplastic known as Nuatan to provide a robust outer shell, a natural leather derived from pineapple leaves called Piñatex for the outer container’s lid, and Lexcell, a neoprene-free natural rubber used for the handles and straps on the bag and the Bento containers.

The Knork Eco has a pretty transparent objective. To A. remove non-biodegradable single-use plastics from our life-cycle, and to B. replace them with cutlery that’s eco-friendly, biodegradable, and more importantly, much more robust and comfortable to use than those horrible disposable forks and spoons. The Knorks are made from a specialized material called Astrik, which combines sugarcane starch along with bamboo fibers. The result is a moldable polymer that’s sturdy, looks and feels like glossy plastic, is food-safe, dishwasher safe, and can biodegrade in 2 years. The Knork Eco is a spoon+fork set made from Astrik. It looks and feels exactly like plastic, and can do everything plastic can. The Knork cutlery comes in its own chic case made from the bamboo-polymer too, allowing you to easily carry it around with you wherever you go because the Knorks are much more reliable and robust than most plastic spoons and forks. They come with a larger cross-section, making them thicker and stiffer, and even integrate a broader handle with a finger-rest, allowing you to use them with the dexterity of metal cutlery.

Meet the ‘One Size’, a template for parceling Asian food in a way that accommodates for tiny portions, solids, and liquids, and is above all biodegradable. Made from a molded cellulose material that can easily be composted (so you don’t need to separate the food and packaging while throwing it out), the One Size features a small single-person tray, a torus-shaped family-meal tray, and glass and lid for soups, curries, and gravies. The trays can be used to store individual food items, or portions of food using small cellulose walls as dividers, so you’ve got a bento-box-styled takeaway container that’s singular in nature. The single-person box can be slotted to create up to four separate compartments, while the family-meal box can be divided into eight segments, creating smaller containers within the larger container, without the carbon footprint. The boxes come with a glass and lid too. The glass holds any liquid-based dish, while the lid itself doubles up as a miniature dish for wasabi or soy sauce. Piasek’s design is made from molded cellulose, which primarily comprises recycled paper or natural fibers (think of your egg-carton), pressed into the shape of the packaging.

Finally, a round pizza box and it’s reusable + sustainable! Designed by Marlene Bruch and Luise Hombach, the PIZZycle is an eco-friendly pizza packaging concept aims to be an alternative to cardboard pizza boxes while taking a stand against the age-old debate of square vs round boxes. The common single-use boxes are left with food residue and therefore are deemed as non-recyclable waste – so if you really want to recycle that cardboard box you have to clean it. By being part of a deposit system, PIZZycle offers value to pizza restaurants, their customers as well as the environment. The packaging is composed of two identical, round shells, following the shape of a pizza. The box can be carried easily, cleaned in the dishwasher, and stored efficiently.

The Dip-In Tiffin was designed primarily for dry/semi-dry foods. Since the packaging isn’t air-tight, it tends to exclude foods that are gravy-based, limiting its options, but making it great for dry snacks like doughnuts, sandwiches, etc (the Indian context uses savory doughnuts and fermented rice-cakes). The tiffin’s main vessel is created using a dried, thermoformed Areca leaf, an eco-friendly alternative to conventional disposable plates. These vessels hold semi-dry, saucy, and oily foods really well too, offering a more reliable alternative to brown paper bags/boxes. The Areca bowls are covered with a simple branded paper sleeve, and slots along the sleeve allow multiple boxes to be suspended to each other vertically, resembling the tiffin. The solution was devised mainly for airports, which see patrons quickly grabbing meals and eating them within hours of checking in. It doesn’t use any glue, staples, or seals either, making it safe, and the all-natural makeup of the packaging means it can easily be disposed of after use!

PriestmanGoode designed a line of eco-friendly and sustainable in-flights products as a part of their new exhibition at London’s Design Museum called ‘Get Onboard: Reduce. Reuse. Rethink’.  Their green inflight meal service has completely transformed the conventional meal tray we are so used to receiving on a flight. This design philosophy and concept can be used for takeaway boxes as well!

It’s that time of the season where you put your money where your mouth is. We have heard enough about plastic pollution and how we keep adding on to the trash. This applies mainly to the food industry where takeaways equal to the use of plastic cutlery. Wooden spoons, knives, forks, and sporks seemed to the better alternative, but nothing in comparison to sustainable and re-useable stainless steel flatware. However, the problem of plastic cutlery still persists and you as a consumer can be the change. Use the Pocket-Sized Reusable Cutlery & Chopsticks by Outlery. For those who don’t know them, Outlery is an Eco-Conscious company and have crafted this collapsible and portable set of cutlery and chopsticks, that fit into tin boxes. The three-part kit, screws on in a jiffy and can be used on the go. Easy to clean and maintain, you can carry the box with you, wherever you go.

This clever nutcracker design was inspired by the shape of a carabiner clip!

There’s a certain charm to the Nutcracker designed by Rudolph Schelling Webermann for Normann Copenhagen, and this charm stems from the fact that the Nutcracker doesn’t really look like a nutcracker.

With its slick, modern design, Webermann’s nutcracker design looks more like a carabiner clip, but it is, in reality, a Class 2 lever that lets you easily crack nuts of varying sizes. The carabiner-shaped nutcracker comes with a closed-loop design and is made with a silicone outer body that’s comfortable to hold as you apply pressure. Metal inserts on the inside of the silicone clip let you place and crack-open nuts of different sizes, and the closed-loop silicone design acts as both a hinge as well as a spring, allowing the Nutcracker to easily break open the toughest of nuts before returning back to its original shape.
