Evocative of water ripples, a circular knob is surrounded by concentric rings, forming a prominent design feature on this blue-hued floor-to-ceiling wardrobe. It extends further to become a floating study unit and makes excellent use of the corner of this room. This design typically does not break the continuity of the wardrobe and makes multi-functional use of the corner space. It contrasts beautifully with the grey and white tone of the room.

The branch shape handles of the wardrobe infuse a forest vibe into the décor of this children’s room. Here the idea has moved a step further into the ceiling light fixture. The white and peach color palette brings a snowy wintery feel into the décor.

This modular furniture system designed for kids is built to be play-friendly!

My NooK is a modular furniture system designed for kids to use as their own customizable playground, with plenty of modules and colors to choose from.

You don’t have to have kids to know they make a playground of every room in the house. The cushions are boulders, the lampposts are trees, and the floor, of course, is lava. We’ve all been that age when anything goes, no holds barred. Designed by Olivia and Patrick Rudomino, My NooK is an expandable and customizable furniture system that was created to quench the need for play.

Covering the full spectrum of colors and shapes, each module that comprises My NooK comes in practically every color under the sun and any shape you can imagine, from orange slices to tree logs. The beginnings of My NooK formed close to home for the Australian couple. Spurred by their own children’s imagination and creativity during playtime while locked down due to the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, My NooK was created by the Rudominos as a source of endless entertainment for their kids.

Citing the inspiration behind the modular furniture system, the Rudominos note on their website, “Their new play seemed to involve every piece of household furniture, cushion, every pillow, and blanket…This led to a revamp of our living and play area where we trawled the web for a proper solution – something that allowed our children creative freedom, encouraged independent play, and was safe and [cozy] too.”

Hoping to create a modular furniture system that didn’t just take up space in the house, but complemented the living room and opened it up during playtime. Answering the need for outdoor furniture as well as indoor, My NooK is upholstered with water-resistant fabric from Australia’s Warwick Fabrics. Being made from water-resistant material, MyNooK means playtime could flow from the living room to the poolside without the worry of ruining the couch.

Loop is a modular furniture system that aims to keep your kid entertained while you’re working from home, incorporating a mixed array of play modules and work modules that can be reconfigured endlessly to create the ideal WFH space.

Working from home has tested each of our house’s office efficiency and versatility. Few of us have come out on top–sinking into the couch is great for Netflix, but not Zoom, and mid-meeting snacks end up as a layer of cracker and chips on the carpet. Add kids to the mix and a home renovation project couldn’t come soon enough. But before you completely transform your living room, look to Loop, a modular furniture system with integrated kid-friendly features designed by industrial designer Buse Kaya for parents who need to keep an eye on their kids while working from home.

It always feels like the doctor’s office waiting room has everything to keep your kid entertained, from wooden toy blocks to sheets and sheets of stickers, whereas the magazine rack is there for you to peruse while you sip on your coffee and fill out the paperwork. Loop (stylized as Loop.) is a little bit like that.

From a chalkboard to a bead maze and tactile puzzles, each module that makes up Loop is designed for your child to play with while you work. Considering its modular formation, Loop can be configured in countless different ways. In one space, users can stack each module on top of one another to create a partition and standing desk space, allowing you to work freely while your kid remains entertained and within eyesight.

Alternatively, users can position Loop so that the storage modules bunch together while the play and work modules attach to one another to form a hybrid WFH space. Or, true to its name, Loop can form a circle similar to horseshoe desk formations in grade school so while you work at one module, your kid can play away right in front of you.

Since WFH has sprung into high gear, those of us with kids are reconsidering our home spaces to make sure we’re filling out the correct paperwork while watching our kids and keeping them entertained. Comprised of attachable modules, Loop is a furniture system that can adapt to any living space. Each module comes with its own function and personality, offering an array of different play spaces for your child or children to stay entertained.

Each module that comes with Loop can be broken down to create detached play areas for your kid to bring anywhere they like.

The modules can even function as seats that imitate a rocking horse.

Built with kid-friendly materials, Loop is as playful as it is safe. 

Loop comes with an assembly booklet that guides users through the building process. 

Loop’s final form was ultimately decided following multiple ideations and an involved research period.

As a kid, you either wanna be the one with the coolest basement in school or be friends with the person who has the coolest basement. Manhattan-based architecture and design studio Eisner Design renovated a family’s basement into a private miniature theme park for their kids, complete with adult-only theme parks in the form of a wine bar. The basement in Water Mill, New York is the ideal summertime destination for kids and adults alike, equipped with everything from a wine bar to a rock climbing wall and foam pit.

Eisner Design’s renovation pads the children’s basement playscape with cushioning from the floor to the ceiling to ensure rowdy and safe play. From the bookshelf to the tree swings, the designers at Eisner envisioned kids’ imagination and brought it to life. Stenciled between cubbies and bookshelves, Eisner Design lodged cushioned seats that work as hideouts tucked away from the action for when playtime gets too tiring. One shaped into a perfect circle and the other forming the shape of a lima bean, the new seating nooks offer kids their own midday nap destination, à la mom and dad. Rooted just in front of the seating nooks, a modular, cushioned playground is stationed next to an indoor tree trunk that can be used for climbing or as a base during games of tag.

Beyond the colorful resting nooks and modular playground, the basement once again assumes its minimalist optic white color scheme and introduces the basement’s hammock tree, constructed from a steel, columnar base and cloth seated hammock beds. Then, tucked away in the basement’s corners, an upholstered low-rise wall forms the pool of a foam pit where kids can plummet into after climbing to the top of the basement’s rock climbing wall or hanging from its monkey bars.

Since basements are the spot for sleepovers, Eisner Design equipped it with PlayPlace-approved sleeping accommodations, providing netted bunk beds located next to the basement’s indoor basketball net. Of course, while the kids are playing, adults can enjoy the basement’s integrated wine bar, complete with white Caesarstone countertops where you can enjoy a beverage you couldn’t get at McDonald’s PlayPlace.

A modular cushioned playground gives the newly renovated a safe place for kids to get rowdy and escape the heat of the summertime.

Integrated seated nooks provide kids with their own naptime escapes just like mom and dad.

Cushioned window seating create nooks with outdoor views throughout the basement.

A basketball net stationed next to the basement’s netted bunk beds gives the sleeping area a playful touch.

Just beyond the modular playground, a hammock tree, and foam pit bring this basement to the next level.

An integrated wine bar for mom and dad provides the adults with entertainment that McDonald’s can’t.

The rock climbing wall is stationed atop a foam pit for kids to fall into after falling either from the climbing wall or overhead monkey bars.

Playground fun meets grown-up furniture to make the ultimate sliding chair!

Meet the ‘S-it chair’ – a chair that you sit on by sliding down its backrest!  This might be one of the most natural way to sit in my opinion but make sure you are not sliding in with drinks or snacks because adults have to clean up their own mess. The chair includes a ladder, a handrail, a backrest, and a seat that are all combined together to give us a playful modern piece of furniture. I can picture this in our homes and no one will suspect the amount of fun one can have with their own mini slide-chair!

Designer Shinji was inspired to create this fun design when he was visiting a local playground and went down the slide to bring back some of his fondest childhood memories. He happened to notice that the slope he just slid down had turned into a backrest given that a kid-size slide is practically a chair for an adult and that is how the ‘S-it chair’ came to be. The S-it chair would make a great addition to your yard or even inside office space because, let’s admit it, we all need that unconventional, out-of-the-box inspiration to get our creative juices flowing. Eccentric yet nostalgic with the right mix of functionality, the S-it chair is a piece that elevates what furniture design means for the designers and the end users.

It is perfect for a Netflix binge, a quiet reading session, or that morning lazy moment when you have to start work but don’t feel like it so you literally slide into your chair. This chair is 2021 essential!

A kid-friendly refrigerator to keep all the members of the house happy with great food!

‘Assorti’ translates to ‘harmony,’ in French, and a new line of refrigerators, designed specifically and equally for both children and parents, from Designer dot embraces exactly that. When it comes to household appliances, it sometimes seems that the usability or user-friendliness is tailored for young adults or older adults – children typically are left with the appliances that they’ll soon grow out of, but Assorti changes that.

Assorti aims to decrease the overall distance between children and adults – Assorti is a refrigerator designed with both parents and children in mind as users. The designers behind Assorti have designed and constructed a refrigerator that provides separate compartments for children that are easily reachable even from low heights. The refrigerator is comprised of two main sides, the child and the parent. The child’s side is found on the left of Assorti and is made up of two sliding cupboard-like compartments. This is the ‘ready-to-eat’ side so that children can easily grab a juice pack, cool pack of fruit snacks, or a yogurt cup whenever they choose and parents won’t have to worry about any mess popping up before dinner from children climbing shelves to reach their favorite flavor. The child’s side is equipped with a three-tier, refrigerated sliding shelf that comes out to full extension so the children of the house can peruse the snack shelves at their leisure. Assorti grants your kids limited access to the refrigerator’s goodies in order to instill both a sense of know-how in the kitchen for young people and a sense of respect for thoughtful boundaries set by parents.

Right above the child’s cupboard, parents will find an additional sliding shelf, this time only two-tier, where they can store their ‘more adult’ items like liquor or skincare products. Moving over to the right side, the parent’s side, a classic refrigerator model takes shape. Inside, you’ll find plenty of shelf room, pull-out drawers, and a freezer section, so that you can store all of your ingredients for cooking, like meats, fish, poultry, fruits, and vegetables. Assorti also comes with a display screen, located on the right side, which informs users of the temperatures for each section of the refrigerator, including the storage cupboards, the refrigerator, and the freezer. Assorti also comes in three different colors, rose pink, taupe gray, and slate black, so that no matter your kitchen space, Assorti can easily slide into the harmony of your home.

This $65 DIY furniture kit is designed to creatively balance at-home learning and play!

Kids have been home since March and although it has just been a couple of months, it feels like years for parents as they juggle work from home with school from home! As we all adjust to the new normal, we are also swallowing the hard pill that schools may not reopen for the rest of the year. Even if they do, it will only be part-time so children will still be home for the majority of the time. To make adjusting easier for both parents and the kids, Rosan Bosch, a Danish designer has collaborated with the innovative furniture maker Stykka to give us Wonder DIY –  a set of simple cardboard kits that encourage learning as well as provide functional usage.

Wonder DIY has four different kits that come with cardboard elements that allow your child to create their own learning landscape. As they make their own ‘desks’, it gives them a sense of owning their space and creating a physical learning environment outside of school. Children can learn and be entertained as they build, re-build, and re-invent their learning space – playfulness and purpose make the core of these kits! “Adults are not the only ones who feel like their lives are out of control because of the coronavirus,” says Bosch. “Children are feeling it as well. These kits are designed to empower them and make them feel in control of their environment on some level.”

The design equips the child to continue active learning through curiosity and creativity – the modular nature of the boards let them build their own study-play area and the blank cardboard also serves as a canvas for art projects. The four models are SUN, CAVE, ISLAND, and TREE. The SUN is a theatre setup for kids to practice their presentation skills and the CAVE lets them concentrate and reflect in an ‘open cave’ that transforms into a hiding place when a blanket is draped on top (I can imagine some adults really liking this one too!). ISLAND has one of the most practical functions as it offers a table and exhibition wall that provides a surface to study and be creative while TREE lets them showcase ideas and sit under a ‘tree’ – alone in concentration, or together in collaboration.

Recycled cardboard was chosen as it is affordable, easy to assemble/disassemble, lightweight, and durable for children to work with. All sets are made to be modular and flexible to maximize creativity. “We have developed a practice with six principles to guide the design of learning environments for the 21st century. Wonder DIY is based on these design principles that empower children to reflect on and plan their own learning journey,” says the team. Everyone is a natural born creative thinker, all they need are the right tools to make wonderful things happen!

IKEA’s 6 quarantine forts will bring back some childhood magic!

Are you ready for the weekend? I know it may not feel like ‘weekend’ weekend because we have all been home for two months and we really could use a change of scenery. The closest way to that is playing around with our furniture and that could mean either rearranging it to give our space a new look or using IKEA’s 6 furniture fort idea. We all know which one is more fun!

To stay safe from the pandemic, we are holding the fort and staying home. But to make quarantine better, IKEA has given us 6 illustrations in their iconic style to build some cozy forts! These are all without screws so there is no assembly-anxiety. The options are Castle, Fortress, Wigwam, House, Campingtent, and Cave. Each of these forms resonates with a memory we have had either indoors or outdoors. Castle will make you nostalgic because it is the fort we built during our childhood with four chairs, a lamp and a sheet – classic! Fortress makes me feel like it is the business class of forts with its cabin-like build. Wigwam is also another childhood reminiscent of the tipi tent, it does have a smaller capacity compared to the others. House is the easiest one, I used to make it with my siblings all the time! Campingtent like the name suggests is all about bringing the outdoors in – get your smores ready on the stove and put on some nature sounds to really create that ambiance. The Cave is basically for all of us quarantining with parents, no matter the age. It is nice to end conversations with “Alright, I am going back into my cave now!”.

IKEA has always been a happy place, you could really spend the whole day there and end it with their famous meatballs. Since we can’t go to what is Disneyland for adults, they are bringing some of that magic back home to us.
