Philips’ Mini Hi-Fi System lets you dock iPhones, spins them into turntables

Philips' Mini HiFi System lets you dock iPhones, spins them into turntables

The iDevice clique's had no shortage of options when it comes to choosing DJ-friendly gear. Now one of the latest peripherals to enter the spinning market is Philips' Mini Hi-Fi System, which boasts a modest 300W total output power and offers a cozy turntable canvas that has docking room for a couple of iPhones -- in theory, iPod touches should be okay to fit as well. Furthermore, the beat-inducing apparatus is also compatible with that rather popular djay application for iOS, making it easier to mix, scratch and blast all your favorite tunes in one place. Philips launched this Mini Hi-Fi add-on a while back, but today it's finally placing it up for grabs in the UK for a hefty £300, or about $470 if you're this side of the Atlantic. Be sure to click on past the jump to quickly gaze at a largely appealing pic gallery.

Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes (update: source goes down)

Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes

There have been teases here and there that Google's Nexus 7 was going to get a full, official accessory treatment from ASUS, but actual details have been scarce. Consider ASUS' cover blown, almost literally. Presentation files finding their way to Nordic Hardware show the known Smart Case-like, $20 Travel Cover that's already lurking on the ASUS and Google websites, but they also spoil a leather Premium Cover that will reportedly cost $40. As for a cradle to round out the set? While the company had previously confirmed that a dock was coming, we're now getting a glimpse of the $50 Nexus Dock's super-simple wedge design and audio output. With the exception of the Travel Cover, the accessory bonanza is pegged by the slides as arriving in late August -- just in time for that last-gasp summer vacation.

Update: Nordic Hardware has since taken down its original post "at the request" of an unnamed party.

Got A Family Full Of Devices To Charge? How’s A Super Charger Dock Grab Ya?

By David Ponce

There really aren’t many interesting things to say about the above item. It’s not an exciting one; it’s a useful one. It charges mobile devices. Up to 4 cellphones and a tablet. So you can have the kids come home from school, plug their phones in while they go off and get the house nice and dirty and come back later to a charged mobile. You can turn it into a little charging station, tucked away somewhere central. It’s got connectors for the iPhone as well as micro USB for a host of other devices.

It’s $99.

Not exciting. We know.

Retro Gaming Is Alive And Well: GameDock Turns iDevice Into NES-like Console

By David Ponce

Retro gaming is an area that seems to be doing quite well right now and an entire ecosystem is being developed to support it. Many of you are probably familiar with the iCade, which takes an iPad and turns it into a small, old-school gaming arcade. Well the GameDock pictured above takes a different approach. It allows you to dock your iPhone and play iCade games on any television while using an NES-like controller. The creators felt that it bridged the gap between the too-small screen of the iPhone and the too-large-for-on-screen-controls of the iPad, while giving gamers that genuine old-timey feel of classic controllers. The dock also charges your phone as you play so you can keep going forever.

This is a Kickstarter project that is still well short of its funding goal, but if you want to help make it happen, it’ll cost you either $100 if you get in on the last 3 of the 75 early-bird units, or $150 for one GameDock and one controller. You can expect delivery in December.

AOC Aire iPlay desktop LCD docks iPhones and iPods, rocks the joint (modestly)

AOC Aire iPlay desktop LCD docks iPhones and iPods, rocks the joint quietly

AOC has a bit of a long-term memory issue: it claims the Aire iPlay E2343Fi is the first computer monitor to have a built-in iPhone and iPod docking station. Nope. But don't let that deter you from checking out the new 23-inch LCD, whose cradle in the base will both keep your Apple gear topped up as well as play movies and music through the display. The 10-watt speakers won't exactly bring the house down, though they will let you take the headphones off. As an actual computer display, it's a typical TN-based panel with a 1080p resolution, a quick 2ms pixel response time and a boldly claimed 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Those who find a separate dock or (gasp) wires too much can officially spend $280 for an Aire iPlay of their own today; Amazon and other shops have already knocked the price down to a more palpable $230.

Orbitsound announces T9 iPhone-friendly soundbar, we go ears on

Orbitsound announces T9 iPodfriendly soundbar, we go ears on

You may remember seeing Orbitsound's T12 iPod dock / soundbar pop up in our summer buyer's guide. Today, the firm's just unveiled the latest in its product family: the Orbitsound T9. As you'll see, it's a very similar deal, but with an obvious difference -- its size. At 300mm (about 12") across, it's almost exactly half the length of its bigger brother (605mm) -- but not everything is a straight cut down the middle. Power-wise, this diminutive dock has a power output of 140W RMS (split 80 on the subwoofer, 35 on the front speakers and 25 on the sides,) and carries the same in- and output options. That means optical, line (phono and 3.5mm) and an iDevice connector going in, and a composite video (for piping those movies on your iPhone to your telly) in the other direction. The included subwoofer helps the device perform the dual roles of iPod dock, and TV soundbar. It's launching in mid-July in UK retailers, and internationally online for £200 / $249. Luckily, we managed to get our hands on one of the first production models, and took it for a spin, so boogie on past the break for our impressions.

iXoost iPhone/iPod Exhaust Manifold Docks: Smokin’

Finally, a breakthrough in imposing iOS docks. After the Docks Made From Horns revolution comes the Docks Made From Huge Ass Exhaust Manifolds. They’re called iXoost, from the root word Xoost, meaning to be absolutely tired of this lazy naming scheme. Good thing the product itself is beautiful.

Each iXoost dock is hand-built in Italy, with the graceful and shiny pipes complimented by leather trim and a base made from a solid block of aluminum. The docks are available in V8, V10 and V12 models. The V8 and V10 have the same specs: two 28mm tweeters, two 25mm midrange cone drivers, one 100mm subwoofer and one 200mm subwoofer. The top of the line V12 adds an additional tweeter, midrange driver and 100mm subwoofer. I hear there’s a top of the top of the line model where the manifolds are still attached to an entire car.

The iXoost website doesn’t list prices for the docks, but you can bet your Prius that they’re expensive.

Jarre AeroPad Two Dock Just Looks Great

By David Ponce

iDevice docks are so common, it’s getting to be pretty annoying to write about. But every now and then we come across one that looks so darn good, we think it’s worth mentioning just for that. The Jarre AeroPad Two from designer John Michael Jarre is simply stunning. Sure, we realize that this is in the eye of the beholder, so we’re not going to get into an argument with anyone over this. And maybe the dock sounds great and has tons of features, but really, we only like the way it looks. If you must know, however, it works with any iDevice, has four 30W speakers and is made of stainless steel with chromium finishing, with bamboo accents.

Yeah, not the most exciting features. You’ll be paying $920 for looks and looks alone. But hey, for some people, that’s all that matters. It’s going to be shipping in September.
