This weaved tubing bag can change its colors to create patterns and designs

Don’t waste money buying different bags with different weaves and patterns when you can have a single one that you can change depending on your mood or style.

Woven bags, especially those made from sustainable and natural materials, are a delight to the eyes. Some just can’t get enough of them, so they buy and buy until they realize they have one too many. It’s really a waste of space, of money, and of materials, not to mention these could eventually end up getting thrown out in the end. What if you could have just one “woven” bag that can have all the patterns and designs that you want? That’s sort of the idea behind this prototype bag, which is more like the seed of an idea that could actually be turned into an actual product.

Designer: – 1Pt

This “color-changing tubing bag” is actually more like a container for an actual bag, or at least some flexible material to actually hold objects inside. The “bag” is made from 1/4′ OD, 1/8′ ID silicone tubing that was woven, heated, and then cooled to retain that shape. While it can be worn like a tote bag, the gaps in between don’t make it an effective bag on its own, not unless you’re always carrying large objects.

The magic of the bag is that you can have colored patterns thanks to colored water pumped inside the tubing. You can just fill the entire bag with a single color, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, you can alternate colored water and air to create gaps in order to create different patterns, like dots and dashes. One can even use different colors to create more complicated designs.

The prototype uses a microcontroller to alternate pumping liquid and pumping air, and it seems that everything has to be done manually. Computers, however, are wonderful things, especially when paired with brilliant and creative minds. It is entirely possible, for example, to develop software that will automate all of these so that a bag owner can simply give it a pattern they want to be “painted” on the bag and come back an hour later to a finished product.

It’s definitely a lot of work compared to just buying a new bag, but the benefits could outweigh the prep time. You won’t be limited to a single design, for example, and only by the colors of water you have available. Except for the silicone tubing, which could probably be substituted for something more sustainable, the bag has a lower impact on the environment in the long run. Durability is still debatable, however, but the idea is definitely interesting enough to deserve more research.

Meng Du x Oddbird Unwasted bag collection is made from grape skin leather

Oddbird Meng Du Grape Skin Design Hero

Sustainable fashion is more than just a movement as we believe it is here to stay. It should be if we want a better future and planet for the next generation. We’re on the lookout for stylish footwear, clothing, and accessories so expect more eco-friendly and “green” products on the horizon.

There is a sudden increase in brands and designers starting campaigns for more sustainable products. Nike has its Move to Zero campaign. We also remember the Hana sneakers made from fruit waste like pineapple leaves, apple skin, grape skin, and seeds. A similar line of bags has recently been introduced and this time, the products are made from grapes. We know leather from fruits or vegetables is already possible. It’s much more sustainable compared to animal leather and is guilt-free.

Designer: Meng Du for Oddbird

Oddbird Meng Du Grape Skin Design Where to Buy

Chinese designer Meng Du has teamed up with Oddbird to design leather bags. The leather is made from recycled grape skins, which means grape waste now serves a purpose. Winemaking dates back to some 4100 BCE, and it’s not yet a lost craft. However, winemakers still need to be pro-active in making sure the industry is future-proof. We’ll never know what will happen, but we can prepare to improve the wine’s lifecycle and production.

Oddbird Meng Du Grape Skin Leather Design

Oddbird, a producer of quality wine in the Scandinavian region, knows there are obstacles in ensuring winemaking lasts. However, they can be overcome by partnering with companies and designers with the same goal in mind. Wine production waste is a reality, but good thing grape marc can now be transformed into leather. Instead of just throwing away grape skin, they can be used for next-generation leather.

More companies are looking for more innovative ways and sustainable methods when it comes to fashion, furniture, and accessories. This collaboration between Meng Du and Oddbird also brings Planet of the Grapes into the equation. The French leather maker has helped discover ways to produce vegan leather.

The leather bag collection is called Unwasted. The grape leather bag is a bottle holder that you can carry as a waist bag. It’s art with a purpose and is a perfect example of a zero-waste effort by Meng Du–a young Chinese designer from Parsons School of Design, New York, who is now gaining popularity for her sustainable designs. She has also come up with a virtual concept design adapted for the metaverse.

The shape of the Merlot bag is like a squashed milk carton. The inspiration was a squashed carton the designer saw on the road. The other bag shaped like a can is called the Chardonnay. Meng Du called this project ‘Incognito’ because in her own words, “many things appear to be hidden in this project.” It looks like leather, but it’s really made from grape skin.

Pagina Collection brings eco-friendly, paper-designed bags, cases

I am not that great of an artist or designer, but every once in a while, I have the urge to create personalized bags and accessories. I mean, I do that in my head of course, not in real life, due to my lack of artistic talent. But for those who would want to add a bit of personalization on their bags, there are not a lot of brands or products that would let them do so. This new line from Italian company Essent’ial is one of the few that can offer this. And even better (or maybe the best part), this collection is made from eco-friendly and washable material.

Designer: Paolo Stefano Gentile

The Pagina Collection includes a backpack, notebooks, pen and accessory cases, all designed like actual paper: lined paper, notebook paper, graph paper. But the design is more than just a nostalgic look at our school supplies. The items are actually made from a special FSC-certified paper which means it has been “harvested in a responsible manner”. The material is eco-friendly, easily washable, and obviously, water-resistant.

The personalization part is a pretty good bonus feature for this collection. Since the design has lines and grids, it’s easy to write or draw on them if you want your bag or cases to have more of a personalized feel. Because of the FSC paper, you can wash the items at 30 degrees with mild soap in case you want to remove your design or you just want to clean them up. But the design can already stand on its own so if you’re like me with no artistic talent, you can just use the bags and cases as it is.

The collection includes a backpack in gray color with white lines with shoulder straps made from 100% regenerated cotton and clip closure. There’s also a notebook case that looks like an actual notebook so if you put a lined notebook inside it, there’s a notebook inception thing kind of going on. There’s also a stationery accessory case that you can use to store scissors, pens, erasers, and other things you may need for school or work. Lastly, there’s a pen case in which you can store your, well, pens. There seem to be different designs for these cases, both lined and grid.

As a stationery and bag/case collector, these are definitely something that I would like to have, even if my student years are way behind me. I do not need to design or personalize them as the designs are pretty good enough. The Pagina Collection can be used by students, kids, grown-ups, or anyone who likes paper-designed items that are eco-friendly.

This modular outdoor bag looks futuristic and fits every wearing style

If you’ll be dragging along some of your most essential stuff with you, you might as well look cool and feel comfortable while doing so.

Bags are both the most utilitarian yet also the most personal things we carry with us the moment we step outdoors, at least next to our smartphones. We choose bags not just to match our aesthetic tastes but also to match how we prefer to carry them. Not all bags are created alike, of course, and most outdoor bags tend to look the part of being rugged and not something you might be happy to flaunt around. There is, of course, always room for improvement, and one concept tries to check all the right boxes of flexibility and comfort while also looking cool in the process.

Designer: Zihao Song

Different people carry bags differently, and most bags are designed for one or the other style. Some prefer to swing their bags over their shoulders or backs, while others like keeping their stuff close to their chest. Of course, there are also outdoor bags that try to serve all customers but end up looking awkward or feeling uncomfortable.

Designing a bag that caters to different wear styles is definitely no easy feat. Especially when you’re trying to hit other targets like comfort, style, and even modularity. Those are the lofty goals that this Travel Box outdoor bag concept tries to address. As with any good product design, the idea went through various iterations and prototypes before arriving at a final, workable version.

The Travel Box is notable in a few ways, and the most immediate is its minimalist design that almost has a tinge of futuristic appeal with its sharp angles, straight edges, and hard shell. This design brings both protection as well as room for all the items you’d want to bring with you on a trip outdoors. The colored straps provide a nice chromatic contrast to the bag’s all-black motif, creating visual points of interest that bring a bit of life to the product. The bag also makes use of reflective stickers that not only provide safety but also break the monotony of that black surface.

Despite the Travel Box’s handsome but hard looks, it is designed to be comfortable to wear, whether you hang it off your shoulder, across your chest, or on your back. As an added bonus, the top portion of the bag can actually be detached and be used as an independent diamond-shaped box you can carry around by hand. The modular Travel Box is a fine example of how some outside-the-box thinking can lead to a product design that is not only functional but looks cool to boot.

realme and Heliot Emil design a phone chest strap worthy of Paris Fashion Week

Almost all smartphone brands try to wax philosophical about the design and manufacturing processes that their tech-oriented devices go through each generation. This kind of marketing language has become even more pronounced in recent years as more people see smartphones as more than just some piece of equipment but also a part of their lifestyle and even their personality. Apple is often regarded as the exemplar in this area with its acute attention to detail and thoughtful, minimalist designs. It isn’t the only one, of course, and young phone brand realme is taking big steps in that direction, including making its presence known at this year’s Paris Fashion Week.

Designer: Heliot Emil for realme

For the longest time, smartphones were seen simply as computers in our pockets, glorified telephones that you can take anywhere with you, connect to the Internet, and maybe watch videos or play a game or two. Their nature and people’s perception leaned more towards technological tools, and their designs revolve around usability and ergonomics more than style and presentation. The outlier seems to have been Apple, whose iPhones were regarded as lifestyle products more than just tools. It seems, however, that rest of the mobile industry has caught on, especially now that smartphones are also becoming instruments of self-expression.

realme is a brand that was born from the need to target a more youthful audience, an age group that thirsted for and demanded products that matched their often mercurial lifestyles. At first, that mission seemed to center around offering smartphones that younger people could easily afford, but realme has quickly grown up to cater to a more discerning crowd, one that placed beautiful product design on the same level as cameras and battery life. Thus, the realme Design Studio was born in 2020, amidst a chaotic wave of changes battering the world, producing a variety of products that tickled the senses as much as the mind.

realme’s new taste for design probably found its highest expression at the Paris Fashion Week, where the who’s who of haute couture converge to flaunt their latest visions and expressions. This year, the phone brand joined minds with Copenhagen-based fashion marque HELIO EMIL to create a functional and fashionable accessory that showcases how “techwear meets tech.” A chest strap bag, which almost looks like a gun holster, becomes a classy way to carry your phone securely while showing off its stylish design seen through cutouts on the bag’s leather-like surface.

The smartphone bag itself is already an eye-catching piece, but it was designed to hold an even more eye-catching phone. Those holes are intended to let the realme 9 PRO+ flaunt its starlight-inspired design, especially the Sunrise Blue model, whose hue changes from blue to red when exposed to UV light like the sun. In effect, you would be proudly wearing a color-changing piece of technology on your chest and showcasing realme’s love for trendsetting designs.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for the phone brand, though. realme has already collaborated with design industry giants, including the likes of Naoto Fukasawa, hailed as a master of contemporary industrial design and whose brilliant mind brought into being a luggage-inspired phone last year and this year’s environmentally-conscious device. In fact, realme made its boldest step yet this year when it launched the first phone with a bio-based polymer shell, establishing itself as a brand that isn’t just concerned about looks but also about its role in creating a greener tomorrow.

Sustainable designs created by this upcycling product designer transforms your trash into solutions

Forget recycling. Upcycling could be the next trend that creates new things out of old ones and save more energy at the same time.

We are probably all familiar with the idea of recycling, where certain materials are broken down to be remade into something new, usually related to the original composition, like how paper becomes recycled paper or aluminum comes become ingots. That process, however, doesn’t always work for kinds of things, and many more products end up in landfills when they could still be put to good and often unrelated use. That’s why a young product designer in Hong Kong is trying to kick off a new way of thinking that turns throwaway materials and objects into something useful and perhaps even a bit surprising.

Designer: Kevin, Cheung Wai Chun

Based in Hong Kong, Kevin Cheung describes himself as an “upcycling product designer” and distances himself from the more common concepts of recycling. In fact, he labels recycling as “downcycling” because of how the process breaks down materials rather than using them as-is. While it’s still a big step forward when it comes to sustainability, Cheung tells the South China Morning Post that the entire process still consumes a lot of water and energy in the long run.

In contrast, upcycling actually uses a material’s properties and incorporates that into a new product. Leftover felt carpets from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, for example, are turned into a protective pouch for laptops or even comfy slippers. Coffee bean bags made from heavy-duty jute fabric can be turned into tote bags that tell the whole world your love for the drink.

You might be expecting that Cheung regularly scours waste stations and garbage dumps for materials to use, but that would actually defeat the purpose. Reusing rubbish from those sources would actually take more time and use up water, which is what upcycling is trying to avoid. Instead, the designer goes directly to the sources of these throwable objects, like companies and stores that don’t give a second thought to what they toss out. Cheung’s inaugural upcycling product, the Boombottle, uses plastic bottles from medical clinics.

More than just the environmental benefits, however, Kevin Cheung’s upcycling push also carries with it some human elements. Wallpapers that spark memories or come from other countries can turn into wallets that accompany you wherever you go. Jeans become smartphone cases that not only give a warmer and more tactile feel to an otherwise cold object but also fade in unique ways over time. Each object becomes more than just a product for use but a book that tells the story of the humans that have encountered it.

BAGO Glovebox Clip Keeps Bags Standing Upright While Driving

Filed under products I didn’t know I needed but am now questioning how I ever lived without, the BAGO keeps bags standing upright in your car while driving to help prevent spills or damage to their contents. The product consists of a plastic anchor that can be closed in your car’s glovebox and a seatbelt-like strap with a metal spring clamp at the end that can be attached to bags sitting in the passenger side footwell to keep them standing upright. What a time to be alive!

Currently an already-funded Kickstarter project and now on Indiegogo, $22 will get you a BAGO when they’re shipped around May. Will you be purchasing one? Or will you continue to put your groceries in the trunk like a caveperson? Get with the times! Alternatively, you can accidentally leave a grocery bag on the roof of your car, as I did a few weeks ago, and spill everything as you’re backing out of the parking spot. I’ve never seen bananas so bruised before.

And to think, just 30 years ago, human passengers didn’t even have to wear seatbelts. Now even our shopping bags are wearing them! And while this certainly is a problem solver if you’re traveling with an open can of paint or nuclear material, what I really need is something that prevents me from locking my keys in the car because I’m really not sure how I’m getting home from work today.

Butterfly Wings Shopping Bag Has a Chrysalis Carrying Pouch

Because Japan will never stop being lightyears ahead of the unusual but practical fashion game, this is the Butterfly Birth Shopping Bag from Felissimo. Available from the Japan Trend Shop, it features a green chrysalis carrying case, from which you can extract the beautiful translucent butterfly wings shopping bag, created in the likeness of the wings of a chestnut tiger butterfly, a species commonly found in Asia. I think it goes without saying, but everyone at the farmer’s market is going to be so jealous of me this spring.

Fingers crossed, the bags are a hit, and they start making them in different styles of butterfly wings because I would love to see them available in Goliath Birdwing and Emerald Swallowtail varieties. However, I would not like to see them in any icky moth wing styles. Those won’t sell, Felisimo, so don’t even waste your time.

Sure reusable butterfly wing shopping bags are cool, but do you know what would be even cooler? Reusable dragon wing shopping bags with egg-carrying pouches! Plus, we could piggyback on the popularity of Game of Thrones but not pay for any licensing rights by cleverly naming them Game of Thorns dragon wing bags. We’re gonna be rich! Or get sued.

This ergonomic urban-friendly backpack was co-designed with chiropractors to support your spine

Remember the 9 out of 10 dentists that recommend Oral-B’s toothbrushes? This is like that… but instead, it’s a backpack that’s recommended for your back.

Meet the Symmetry S1, a backpack that was designed slightly differently than you’d normally expect. Most backpacks are designed to fulfill a certain purpose… A functional purpose, a scenario purpose, an aesthetic purpose. The Symmetry S1, however, was made to also be a bag your back loved carrying. Designed with inputs from chiropractors, the S1 is a stylish, functional backpack that you can wear forever without feeling the fatigue. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it the orthopedic shoes of the backpack world, but the S1 wasn’t just designed to suit your lifestyle, it was designed to also suit your body.

Designer: Taylor Sitton of Symmetry Backpacks

Click Here to Buy Now: $209 $300 ($91 off). Hurry, only 268/300 left!

The Symmetry S1 comes with a versatile-looking aesthetic that works in both formal as well as informal settings. As its name suggests, it sports a symmetrical design that’s ambidextrous and pleasing to look at, and comes made from high-quality materials including a twill nylon body, a ballistic nylon base, full-grain leather accents on the straps and handles, and memory-foam cushioning inside the straps and the lumbar support. The memory foam lining within the straps takes loads of pressure off your shoulders and back, and the form-fitting design of the backpack clings to you as you walk, improving your posture and preventing you from slouching or your spine from feeling the weight of the bag with each step.

The makers behind the Symmetry S1 backpack realized that while everyone was focusing on purpose-built bags that either were modular, filled with tech, lined with solar panels, or just designed to go from the office to the gym to the airport, not many backpack makers were actually considering the human-centric aspect of the product’s design. Sure, you could slap a breathable 3D mesh on the back panel to prevent the wearer’s back from sweating, but aside from that feature, none of the bags were actually designed to be ergonomic. The Symmetry S1 aims at ticking that box, along with a bunch of other, thanks to a versatile design that works wherever you take the S1.

The S1 comes with well-organized interiors with dedicated storage areas, mesh-lined pockets, and removable nodes/modules to give all your belongings their rightful place. The S1’s front flap opens a full 180° to reveal its insides, A dedicated laptop sleeve comes padded and can store up to a 16-inch MacBook, while pockets on the front panel let you store a tablet, a notepad, stationery, and a variety of other EDC and accessories. The bag even sports collapsible side pockets for your water bottle or umbrella, a quick-access slot on the top for your keys, and a concealed back pocket for more precious valuables like your wallet or passport.

Lastly (and this might be the most underrated feature on a backpack ever), the S1’s flat ballistic nylon base actually allows it to stand upright without tipping over, giving you the ability to easily place the backpack on the ground wherever you are – at work, at home, at the airport, on the subway, or at a local café.

Ultimately, the S1 focuses on the wearer as much as the stuff inside the backpack. Its body-hugging design keeps your spine in the right shape, promoting good posture while the memory foam straps help distribute the load so you don’t feel the weight of the bag on your shoulders. The S1 sports adjustable straps, fitting a wide range of body types, and comes in 3 color variants – an all-black variant, a gray variant with brown leather accents, and a blue variant with brown leather accents. All the bags are outfitted with waterproof YKK zippers, a rugged, abrasion-resistant ballistic nylon base, and 4 metal feet on the bottom to allow the backpack to stand upright. The bags cost $300 but are up for grabs on Kickstarter at an early bird discount for $209. Each S1 comes with 3 removable nodes/modules, and free shipping.
