Giant Inflatable Rocketship Sprinkler: For an Out of This World Good Time

Fun in the sun: it’s hands down one of my favorite kinds of fun, third only to fun in the shade, and fun inside playing video games. And what better way to enjoy some fun in the sun than running around in a sprinkler? Enter the Inflatable Backyard Rocketship Sprinkler from Funboy and available on Amazon (affiliate link). Just let me mix up a blender of margaritas real quick and I’m ready to party.

The rocketship stands a very respectable 7.5′ tall and has four separate water sprinklers around its circumference for 360-degree coverage, so as long as you’re standing nearby, you’re getting wet. I can already hear my wife yelling at me for running through the house before drying off.

Just don’t forget to wear sunscreen when you’re out playing in the sun. Because I forgot to wear sunscreen at the beach last year and the back of my ears got burnt. Then for the rest of the trip, I couldn’t tell if they were burning because somebody was talking about me or because of the actual sunburn. It made for a very confusing vacation.

Stay cool this summer in an eco-friendly way with these inspirational product designs: Part 2

It’ll be summertime soon, and excitement is already coursing through my veins. Time for Pina Coladas and ice lollies by the beach! As fun and frolicky summer can be, we should make an effort to spend it in the most eco-friendly manner we can, especially during these times. Though our summer plans may be limited this year, owing to the pandemic, we can still always make use of cool and eco-conscious product designs to have a memorable summer. This collection of summer-friendly products will take care of your summer needs, as well as the environment. Sun’s out!

With summer comes an increase in usage of air conditioners and we know they are not exceptionally healthy for the planet. To help maintain the electricity usage, designers Aileen Ooi and E Ian Siew created an attachment to the common standing fan everyone has stashed away at their homes to make the room cooler. The attachment, named KYL is a humidity filter that funnels airflow output to cool a closed room. KYL would be able to lower temperatures by 1.5degrees Celsius and also make the room arider (a boon in humid places like Singapore, India, and more). Utilizing Bernoulli’s principle to create a cooling effect, KYL comes with a removable filter made up of tiny pieces of silica gel which absorbs moisture from the air. This lowers the humidity in the room and we can reuse the silica gel by washing it then leaving it out in the sun to dry, minimizing the usage of electricity. And removing this filter is easy as it comes affixed with velcro.

The Z-Triton Electric Houseboat was created as a vehicle that could serve as an alternative to the traditional camper. It is comfortable enough to house two adults for a weekend getaway and the choice of land or water is up to the travelers. The amphibious nature of the modern camper fits into the flexible lifestyle we lead today, especially since air travel is not on the cards anytime soon it is opening up a lot of avenues for local trips in less popular/offbeat locations. The durable houseboat measures 3.6 meters in length, 1.2 meters in width, and 1.55 meters in height. It’s perfect for your summer travels!

The Rattan Fan’s form has been inspired by some classic rattan pieces like the iconic chair, woven baskets, beach bags, and lightweight cabinets that you find on islands. It is airy, it technically has to be, but it visually adds a ‘lightness’ to the room it is in. Rattan is a natural sustainable material that is versatile (talk about being used from furniture to fashion) and sturdy. It also adds a touch of luxury while remaining subtle and unobtrusive to the existing interior design. Unlike coolers, the wireless rattan fan is not an eyesore and provides the flexibility to sit anywhere because the power of the breeze is in your hands now.

Meet the Fufu. What it lacks in name catchiness, it makes up for with function. Designed to work as a tabletop air conditioner as well as a mini-fridge, Fufu is your ultimate weapon against a hot and sweaty summer day. With the proportions of a backpack, Fufu sits anywhere in your room, cooling your space as well as preserving your food and drinks. It uses two semiconductor cooling systems that run simultaneously, balancing energy efficiency and cooling efficiency together.

A clever system of terracotta tiles with water channels woven between them is proving to be a natural, cost-effective way to reduce energy consumption for cooling down subway stations during the summer. Designed by Intsui Design, the Terracotta Valley Wind hopes to drastically reduce energy consumption in the summer by relying on terracotta’s naturally occurring evaporative cooling ability. The material is inherently inexpensive and easy to source, while Intsui Design’s clever tiling design is both eye-catching and functional, earning it a deserved Finalist spot at the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2021. The way the Terracotta Valley Wind cools spaces is simple and frankly ingenious. Water is fed through channels running through the inside of the tiles. The porous tiles absorb the water, which then evaporates through the outer surface, cooling the tile and the air around it. To circulate this cooled air, the Terracotta Valley Wind ingeniously uses the subway train’s movement as free energy!

Designed primarily with the idea of facilitating responsible sailing backed by clean, renewable energy, the Sunreef 80 Eco yacht has just received the go-ahead to be a real sail for the affluent. The all-electric vessel is designed and will now be produced in-house by Sunreef Yachts to be a custom catamaran that navigates long distances in total silence. According to the builders, the Sunreef 80 Eco will have no range limitations since it will be powered by renewable energy, produced on the go, both above and below the waterline. It is an 80-foot long eco-cruiser that’s likely to feature Sunreef Yachts’ proprietary solar skin comprising the world’s lightest solar cells.

Ditching bulkiness for compactness and swapping chemicals for electric current, Sang Kun Park designed FOLD, a foldable electric mosquito net inspired by the traditional Korean fan. A lot of us are going camping or spending more time outdoors these days, and when the bugs come out hunting, we need to be prepared. Sang Kun Park designed FOLD with Designer Dot so that when nature calls out our names, no amount of mosquitoes can get in the way of enjoying it. FOLD’s compact size is its primary appeal, fitting into even the most tightly packed knapsacks. Resembling the traditional Korean fan’s shape and folding apparatus, FOLD is a handheld, portable alternative to the heavy mosquito lamp that measures only two times the size of an average-sized smartphone when folded.

This is the world’s only cycle that comes with an inflatable paddle board for you easily transition between land and water. A collaboration between Red Shark Bikes and Hammacher Schlemmer, this inflatable stand-up paddleboard is perfect for a beach or a lake day. This dream combination of biking and paddleboarding doesn’t require manual rowing, you just have to use the included pedals to move forward. It was designed to include a built-in bicycle gearing system that provides propulsion. Unlike traditional paddleboards, this one can accommodate the rider as well as two additional people – I bet Rose from Titanic could learn a lesson on maximizing the available space from this. Crafted from high-density polyethylene, this paddleboard uses a double layer of PVC which makes it durable.

Insulated sleeve to keep your beverages chilled - Hydro Flask Cooler Cup

Insulated sleeve to keep your beverages chilled - Hydro Flask Cooler Cup

The Hydro Flask Cooler Cup greatly expands that window of time. Designed to keep your chilled beverages frosty (or even keep hot drinks hot), the Hydro Flask Cooler Cup is a versatile little holder for your bottle/can that allows the drinks within them to maintain their temperature for longer. A silicone sleeve allows you to snugly and securely fit your drink can or bottle into the Cooler Cup, letting your drink stay refreshingly cool for longer. The Hydro Flask Cooler Cup comes made from recycled stainless steel, and with a proprietary construction that insulates liquids, you put inside it. In fact, aside from using it as a holder for your bottle or can, you can directly use the Cooler Cup as a tumbler/glass by directly pouring drinks into it!

This compact houseboat gives the residents an opportunity to spend time closely in the natural environment and even move their location if they feel like it. The floating cabin has been designed to blend into the existing landscape so the residents get a chance to experience the surroundings on an intimate level. Bene drew inspiration from traditional cabin fishing boats for the form while optimizing the small space to include a small kitchen, dining table, and sleeping area. For a nautical aesthetic, circular windows were added and the interior features warm timber finishes. The essence of the structure will remind you of the organically shaped waterside huts, dinghies, and boats.

The evaCHILL provides each user with their own personal microclimate without the release of Carbon Dioxide! How? It uses the principle of water evaporation to create moist, fresh, and, most importantly, cool air! This isn’t Evapolar’s first endeavor into personal cooling however, it is undeniably the most refined. evaCHILL is compact enough to be mobile, intuitive enough to be easily controlled, and stylish enough to look right at home within your workspace!

Own Your Own Massive 32′ x 16′ Above-Ground Pool

Summer is coming, and you know what that means – I guess the opposite of whatever they meant in Game of Thrones. And what better way to enjoy the warm weather than with a massive 32′ x 16′ x 4’4″ above-ground pool? After all, digging a giant hole would take time and muscles – neither of which I have.

Available on Amazon for the low, low price of $3,300 (affiliate link), the pool holds an impressive 14,364 gallons when filled to 90% capacity and includes a 2,800 gallons/hour sand filter pump system to keep the water clean. I hate that I even have to mention this, but you still shouldn’t pee in it, just so we’re clear.

So, are you buying one of these and inviting me over for a pool party or what? I’ll even bring my own water wings AND help you fill up the pool with your neighbor’s hose. Think of all the fun we’ll have! There will be a lifeguard on duty though, right? Because I might panic and forget I can just stand up.

This Inflatable Pool Float Tank Has an Integrated Water Cannon

What better way to let everybody know who rules the pool than with a $150 Pool Punisher (affiliate link), an inflatable pool float that looks like a tank and has an integrated pump-style water cannon that can shoot up to 50-feet. Nobody trying to sunbathe by the pool will be safe this summer! Also, my wife is probably going to kill me when I spray her when she’s trying to read.

Get two Pool Punishers for the ultimate in water cannon pool battles! How can you tell who wins? Whoever drinks less pool water. Obviously, I’ve already lost because I was thirsty.

When I was a kid we didn’t have Pool Punishers. We didn’t even have pool noodles. Shoot, we didn’t even have pools, we played in a pond with catfish. They never lost at playing Marco Polo either, I can tell you that. They did lose at not being dinner though.

Summers just became more bearable thanks to this portable air conditioner with a built-in mini fridge

It keeps you cool and chills your brewskis too.

It’s worth noting that Fufu is more of a concept than a real product (otherwise I’d have 5 of them by now). With the design brief of being the ultimate appliance to beat the heat, Fufu keeps you cool externally as well as internally. Its small blower is about the same size as a tabletop fan, while the two-tiered fridge has enough space on the inside to store 12 cans of the beverage of your choice, or you could take a healthier route and store fruits and juices inside too.

Fufu comes with a pretty simple interface that gives you control over the air conditioning. A knob on the front lets you adjust wind direction by orienting fins just like you would on a car air conditioner, while a dial on the side lets you switch the air conditioner on, select wind speed, and desired temperature.

The Fufu’s schematic details how its cooling system would work on paper. Two semiconductor cooling systems work in tandem, creating an efficient balance between cooling the room (or the person sitting in front) and the fridge cabinet. Dual exhausts on the back pushes hot air out, which would probably mean Fufu is best suited for being kept near a window as opposed to against a wall. The designer has even hacked together a proof-of-concept based on the schematic, so maybe we’re close to seeing a working prototype soon?

Fufu was built for the Asian audience, Hong Kong in particular. Referred to as the Most Air-Conditioned City in the World, almost every flat and building in Hong Kong is outfitted with air conditioners that run around the clock, keeping rooms as much as 10°-15° cooler than the outdoors. You could also watch this video that details how “Hong Kong became a giant refrigerator” to understand why something like the Fufu would be an instant hit in the region!

This wearable umbrella is designed to keep you and your belongings dry in rains!

The rains bring with it a feeling of comfort – there is nothing quite as relaxing as curling up with a book and hot cuppa with the rain gently pattering on your window. That is unless you’re stuck out in the rain, wetting everything from your head to your toes and the contents of your bag along with it! To save us from the pain of being caught in the unprecedented rain, Anna Cserba designed the After You umbrella.

The After You umbrella is a multipurpose product designed to save you from the rains and to help you carry stuff when the skies are clear! Anna, a student at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest, created this design as a part of her design course. The aim of the course is to completely redesign an everyday object – an umbrella in this case. The After You revolutionizes the humble umbrella in quite a few ways – first is by making the design hands-free! One of the most tedious things about carrying the umbrella is the juggling act of holding onto your umbrella with one hand with the tons of stuff we carry in our hands. By wearing the product over your shoulders like a backpack, After You leaves your hands free to answer back to that text or browse your phone. The next thing we love about this design is the foldable design – the five layers made from rigid polycarbonate layers fold and unfold to form a cocoon that keeps you protected. When not in need, the After You umbrella can be carried around with ease – either on your back or on the side where it doubles up as a bag to hold your shopping!

Wearing it almost like a bag, the After You umbrella keeps you and your bag safe and dry. Comfortable, lightweight, and is extremely resistant to mechanical impacts, the After You acts almost like a wearable shield, meeting our futuristic, multi-purposing needs while keeping us safe on a rainy day and in the sunshine!

Stay cool this summer in an eco-friendly way with these inspirational product designs!

Ever since I began writing this article, the song spinning through my head is Lana Del Ray’s ‘I got that summertime, summertime sadness
Su-su-summertime, summertime sadness’ (of course I have a melodious husky voice in my head) but this choice of song could purely be because it has been summertime in India for almost 2 months and there is no escaping the brutal heat. With climate change and quarantining as it is, using the air conditioner feels like a guilty pleasure. That is exactly why I put together this collection of product designs that will help you have a cool, eco-friendly summer this year without sky-rocketing your electricity bills!

With summer comes an increase in usage of air conditioners and we know they are not exceptionally healthy for the planet. To help maintain the electricity usage, designers Aileen Ooi and E Ian Siew created an attachment to the common standing fan everyone has stashed away at their homes to make the room cooler.

Cineorama is an outdoor viewing space with projectors by Erika Hock. Made to be a space to enjoy your favorite movies the way they were meant to be, the Cineorama creates a comfortable space in your yard to host a gathering with your friends. Now if only you could get a portable popcorn maker!

The Lilypad is a luxury villa designed by Chuck Anderson and is anchored just north of Sydney’s Palm Beach. Anderson is a boat enthusiast so it is no surprise that he created a floating house! This beautiful Airbnb is also eco-conscious, it is completely solar-powered and is slowly helping us pivot towards sustainable travel. The exterior of the house is made from timber and includes an open living area, a wine cellar, a sleeping loft and, of course, a bathroom (for all that wine that we will consume post quarantine on our holiday!). To feel fancy, you have an al fresco dining (means you can eat your food while enjoying the breeze and sun when going outside is cool again) and sunbathing area on the lower level which also boasts of an expansive terrace.

The Four Seasons shakers by Qualy Design are quite literally perfection. You’ve got four shakers that embody four different seasons and hold four different seasonings. Designed for salt, pepper, dried herbs, and chili flakes, the shakers come with plants on the inside that pair well with the seasoning. The pepper shaker comes with a cactus inside, turning the shaker into a summer scene (make sure you use white pepper for proper effect!)

Usually, the ice pop making process is anything but quick, which can lead to frustratingly long waits as our impatience levels increase. This is certainly not the case for Ellie Tsang’s THE SEAL, which reduces the processing time down to a mere 10 minutes! You may be asking how this has been achieved? It takes full advantage of the working principle of an ice-cream maker but reduces the volume significantly. This, paired with the metal molds that reduce the freezing time even further, allow for ice-lollies to be made in just a matter of minutes… so you can enjoy the refreshing treat on a whim!

Lee’s dehumidifier comes equipped with an auto-focus camera, a humidity sensor, and a timer. The Turn On Booking allows the user to set a time on the timer. You can set the timer and leave your home at ease. Once you activate the Turn On Booking feature, Smoving goes into Automatic Operation Mode. When the appointed time arrives, and Smoving is in Automatic Operation Mode, the moisture sensor begins to detect and recognize the most humid spots in the home. Once the spot has been detected, the auto-focus camera perceives the surrounding, picking out obstacles, ensuring that the dehumidifier reaches the wet spot without encountering any of them. Smoving dehumidifies the area, maintaining an appropriate level of humidity in turn.

Meet the Coldwave. It claims that it can, without any electricity, turn any room-temperature beverage cold in as little as 30 seconds… and can chill down boiling hot coffee in just under 2 minutes. The Coldwave Beverage Chiller comes in two parts. A jug/pitcher to hold the beverage needed to be chilled, and a specialized lid that holds water. The lid’s unique design doesn’t sit above the jug, but rather inserts itself into the jug, immersing itself within the beverage. Store the lid in a freezer for a few hours and the water it holds turns to ice. Place the lid into the jar, and the ice instantly cools the beverage, without ever making contact with it. The lid’s design maximizes beverage-to-ice contact by increasing surface area and allows you to cool your drink without diluting it.

Noori’s multipurpose stove, the V01 model functions not only as a rocket stove but as a barbeque, pizza oven, and fire pit. From ribs, burgers, hot dogs to wood-fired pizza, the V01 functions as a versatile cooker for all occasions. Noori can be used as a permaculture vertical ‘Rocket Stove’. The wood-burning stove, aided with its ability to ensure complete fuel combustion, can be used to cook various recipes with diverse cooking utensils such as pans, casseroles, and other stovetop dishes. And of course last but not the least, it serves as a wood fire pit, warming up even the coldest of days, so there is no season when you won’t need Noori!

Leisure 28 is a sleek electric boat designed by Rand Boats, a Danish company committed to using sustainable design and innovative technology for giving you the best experience out on the water. This boat is built on the pillars of modern Scandinavian design and has powerful electric propulsion (so no motor noise or fuel smell!) with a maximum speed of 45 mph that can run for two hours without a recharge. Its hull design helps in making it ultralight and optimizes the performance effortlessly. Leisure 28 is made of a mix of recycled plastics and bio-based hybrids which makes it environmentally friendly. Let’s continue dreaming about this minimal, graceful, luxurious boat we all need…and can have for USD 172,000.

Its summertime, and though we want to go and park ourself on the beaches, COVID-19 is still going strong and until we have a solution for this illness, social distancing and taking other preventive measures is all we can do. So stay home and stay safe!

An Eco-friendly wireless fan for the island breeze and aesthetic!

I am currently quarantining in India and it is peak summer here. When I say peak I am talking about 108°F with 80% humidity – think of it as a sauna room without any temperature control and you can’t leave. So naturally, the spots right under the ceiling fan are prime but since I share the house with more than one person, we have a cooler which brings another problem to the scene – you can only sit near a plug point. Times like these are when I think about fans being wireless like most of our home appliances and little did I know that it already exists and that too a rattan fan – technology and tropical aesthetic in one!

While it may look like a simple appliance, this appliance has all the features of a modern fan – swing, timer, and speed controls all seamlessly integrated on the back as slightly-dipped buttons so the form remains smooth. It also comes with a matching neutral-tones remote and a charger that goes on the base of the fan. I also love the fact that it has a handle which makes it easy to move around and that actually works in places where wheels aren’t the most efficient (like carpets or tiles that you don’t want to have skid marks on!). The earthy tones make it fit within any space and I am sure no one would complain as long as they have almost-island wind blowing right at them.

This $172,000 sustainable luxury boat is on our summer wish list

I am sure we are all dreaming about summer and places we would rather be at. It would be amazing if we could just get on a boat and go on an ocean adventure around the world, but since we all have to play our part in flattening the curve, the best we can do is stay indoors and look at beautiful boats like the Leisure 28. Digital getaways are fun too, so now let me show you around this sustainable luxury boat!

The luxury boat has been crafted keeping in mind the social interactions during summers and making most of the space without turning into a cruise ship. It has a cabin with a queen-sized bed and an adjustable 12 seater table that turns into a king-size sundeck when lowered. There is an exclusive kitchen & bar space, and when the time is right for us to all be together again that is where we are going to hang out. If you are wondering about a bathroom, yes, there is one and I am also surprised how much Leisure 28 can hold for its size.

Let’s continue dreaming about this minimal, graceful, luxurious boat we all need…and can have for USD 172,000.
