These shelves look like abstract art of faces gazing at you and your collection

There is something both mystifying and unnerving about a beautiful shelf that seems to be staring back at you.

Shelves are often used as a place to display things that are important to us, from our favorite books to photos of loved ones or memorable events. In most cases, the shelves themselves are nondescript or minimal, designed to shine the spotlight on the objects they hold rather than on themselves. Of course, there are also times when shelves are so ornate and magnificent that they almost become the center of attraction. This particular shelf design is somewhat both, holding your mementos and possessions while also standing as an art piece in itself. It could even be an instrument of thought and discussion, provoking some contemplation on what it really means to see things and how our minds can work to fill in the gaps that were never there.

Designer: Freia Achenbach

“Spectator” is a rather apt name for this odd-looking shelf that seems to be made of interlocking jigsaw puzzle pieces. It does, however, raise the question of which one is the spectator and which one is the object of observation. You would think that you or your visitors would be the answer to that, but a closer look at the shelf’s pieces could give you an eerie feeling of being watched instead.

That’s because almost every single piece of this puzzle shelf would look like a distorted human face on closer inspection. In reality, of course, none of them are actual faces, at least none that would resemble reality. And yet, once we initially see those forms in the different pieces, it’s almost impossible to unsee them.

In that sense, the Spectator Series of shelves is as much a psychological art piece as it is a piece of furniture. In its small way, it demonstrates the wonder of our brains that try to fill in the gaps to complete forms and ideas, like how it is able to see faces in shapes that are so far removed from human heads. With so many faces hiding in plain sight, the roles of observer and observed are also reversed, at least in our mind’s eye again.

The shelf still adheres to minimalist design principles despite the odd shapes of its pieces. Each of those pieces is hand-painted with resin, giving it a glossy look that almost reminds one of ivory and bone, which probably helps reinforce that image of faces in the shelves. Just like a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces interlock perfectly in a fixed arrangement, so no other connecting part is needed to keep them together.

1

The Spectator shelves might not be the most practical furniture to hold your things, but it definitely puts them in a different perspective, figuratively and literally. Each negative space isn’t just a place to put your stuff into. It also becomes a metaphor for how these things occupy your mind, just like those comic strips and caricatures that put things inside your head in an almost comical and distorted fashion.

This movable seater can also be your small library on wheels

You probably won’t be taking this small mobile bookshelf outdoors, but you’ll at least be able to enjoy your favorite novel anywhere indoors.

Most of us have our favorite corners at home, our small areas of solitude and calm where we can curl up with a book and maybe even a hot mug of cocoa for comfort. It can be the couch, or it can even be your bed, any place that offers a smidgen of isolation that you could let you enjoy reading or thinking in peace. Not all places have such a nook or cranny, though, especially in more public indoor places like libraries. In those spaces, you might want to escape to a far-off corner of the room with your selected books to read, and this rolling cart for books lets you do exactly that and even offers something to sit on while you get engrossed in that new favorite book of yours.

Designer: Farhan Syahmi

Libraries are designed for reading books, of course, but most of them seem to make that a cold and alien experience that often scares off even bookworms. Long tables force many to uncomfortably share spaces with strangers, while chairs provide little comfort even to your back, let alone your posterior. There are exceptions to these, of course, with reading spaces designed to make reading feel enjoyable and comfortable, but most public spaces, including company libraries, turn the activity into something clinical and mechanical, more for dry studying than getting lost in the pages of a book.

Imagine, then, a library floor plan with more open spaces than unwelcoming rows of long tables, areas where you can pull up your own seat and read in isolation and privacy. You’d have to provide many personal desks and chairs, of course, which will inevitably lead to a lot of distracting pulling and pushing of furniture across the floor. That’s where Gambus comes in, presenting a sort of makeshift movable library within a library, one that you can silently roll around to your chosen spot and let you immediately sit down and read without missing a beat.

The movable library seater takes inspiration from a real gambus or qanbus, a wooden lute-like musical instrument with a large pear-shaped body and a narrow neck. The body of this Gambus seater is likewise made of wood, with a large cavern inside to fit a good number of books. The top surface serves as your seat so that you can sit down and read right where your books are. Alternatively, it can also function as a stepping stool to reach books on high shelves, though the wheels probably make that a bit risky.

The thin neck of the seater curves upward and ends with a tabletop where you can put the book you’re reading or even some of your stuff. You pull or push the Gambus using the tray, and the stem can actually function as a makeshift backrest as well if you’re so inclined. The Gambus is primarily designed so that you can pick a few books from library shelves and the plop down and read where you are (presuming you’re not blocking anyone’s path), but it’s not hard to imagine how the concept could be extended to create more personal reading experiences anywhere that has plenty of books and space to set up your own tiny fortress of solitude, even for just a few hours.

A portable camping stove meets DHL’s design language creating a briefcase sized outdoor must-have!

It’s no secret that camping requires a certain amount of know-how. For instance, knowing how to get fires going, knowing how to pitch a tent and conserve water, how to cook and make your way through a forest unscathed are skills that will help trips to the outdoors feel less stressful and a lot more comfortable. With so many people camping nowadays, designers at PDF Haus have conceptualized a minimal camp grill called Shelf, a portable gas grill with folding shelves and a table.

Developed in the design language of DHL, PDF Haus aimed to give Shelf a simple box silhouette with a freewheeling attitude, taking inspiration from the color scheme, materials and finishes often chosen by DHL for their vehicles and brand aesthetic. The grill even comes with DHL decals and tags that can be adhered to the metallic grill’s front case that turns into its table extension. While most gas stoves come with a separate carrying case, Shelf’s entire grill has been turned into one that can be consolidated and carried away. Shaped and carried like a slim briefcase, two metal clasps open and slide out to reveal the Shelf’s grill and supplementary table space. Just beneath the grill, Shelf includes two retractable shelves that create more space for whoever’s cooking to place their spices, utensils, or tools. Blooming from Shelf’s underside like an awning, the shelves, and the sliding tables nearly double Shelf’s overall area.

Comprising a total thickness of 50mm when laid flat, Shelf’s slim frame allows it to slip easily onto any camp packing list. Reaching 278mm in height and 400mm in width, the compact build of Shelf’s entire grill is only given more weight once propane gas containers are inserted into its underside to activate the grill and get to cooking. Battery operated, Shelf features a battery inlet underneath as well that gives power to the grill’s automatic ignition system.

Designer: Dahae Lee x PDF Haus

Shelf’s simple box frame is reminiscent of DHL’s stripped-down brand aesthetic.

The grill’s shelf awnings remain hidden, folded into Shelf’s underbelly.

Metal clasps unlock to allow Shelf’s table extension to slide and provide further storage options.

A rubber handle allows users to carry Shelf like a slim briefcase.

The grill features an intuitive, recognizable control panel that allows users to adjust temperature and flame settings.

Shelf also comes equipped with space for a detachable drip pan, battery inlet, and a fuel nozzle.

Conceptualized in an array of different colors, Shelf is the perfect camping companion.

Decals and extra tags from DHL can be attached to Shelf’s metallic surface.

The IKEA-worthy multifunctional hourglass lamp is an inspiration for the furniture design industry

One of the greatest perks of my job is researching + understanding the trends that define the Industrial Design world in subtle yet significant ways. If we go by the latest IKEA x SONOS collaboration, the trend in furniture design is to create furniture design that goes beyond being only a piece of furniture, but instead be a well-crafted solution. The difference in both is whether you look at the set of 4 legs and one plank and see it as a table alone or a table that transforms into a chaise lounge when you want to take a nap! This transformative property makes the Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf a worthy winner of the A’ Design Award!

The hourglass shelf takes inspiration from the passage of time, and the functionality of the shelf changes throughout the day. Starting as a coat rack in the early mornings that holds your outdoor wear, the product’s main functionality becomes that of a shelf – to keep your knick-knacks in place. Finally, as the sun goes down, the design works as a detachable lamp, giving light and completing its cycle across the day. “The hourglass is the symbol of time, and the charm of time affects the tide-ups and downs, years change. The change of different roles reminds people to follow the direction of time, perceive the years and harvest exquisite life.” The detachable element of the lamp brings sheer joy to me! As a person surrounded by screens throughout the day, the lamp’s shape and portability make it almost meditative, a chance to literally disconnect and take some time off.

“One plus one is more than two” is the guiding principle behind every thought put into this design. Sure, it provides us with multiple functionalities, but it also creates an emotional connection with the interacting user by sparking joy. With the world leaning towards sustainability, the disposable approach of designing products is now passe. Given the direction mass-manufacturing giants like IKEA are taking (see their latest disassembly guide), the Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf is the perfect furniture design to join the IKEA must-buys. Certainly, given the multitude of usability this shelf provides, it passes the Marie Kondo test of sparking joy, making it a must-have in every home!

The Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf is the winner of the Silver A’ Design Award.

This design solves 3 TV watching issues by combining an OLED screen with modular furniture!

This pandemic saw popular streaming platforms skyrocket even higher as we all spent more time indoors. Research firm The NPD Group reported sales of TVs that were 65 inches were up 53% (in units) over the first half of 2020 and TVs bigger than 65 inches were up 77% in April-June compared to a year ago. Not every space is made to accommodate large TVs but everyone deserves a good Netflix binge session to get through this year and that is why we want to encourage TV designs like the Mondrian – a conceptual OLED screen that works in harmony with a modular furniture setup!

Inspired by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian’s composition of form and color, the Mondrian setup was made to allow a wide range of applications and blend into any interior setting. The aim was to solve three issues we experience with watching TV as we currently do – taking up space, not matching with the aesthetics, and lack of expandability. Urban apartments and single-person households need to maximize their space and should not have to choose between a large appliance and furniture when they can have both. Talking about interior aesthetics, TVs are now increasingly slimmer while furniture remains warm and cozy – this causes a visual mismatch when the two are put together. Mondrian’s design serves both purposes with one seamless structure. TVs are now being used in many ways and need to be able to adapt to the different content it supports, not just static pre-made products.

The contemporary piece of furniture is highly customizable and perfect for a flexible lifestyle. Piet Mondrian himself didn’t just focus on the objects itself, but rather on the relationships formed once you connect two or more together and that is the philosophy followed by Mondrian’s design team who said, “The final form should not exist in nuts and bolts, but somewhere in between.” This is also why it was created with a DIY spirit so you can build your own custom combination using the hardened steel pedestal, bottom-up grid, mounting solutions and the OLED screen. Choose your size,  stack up the rows and columns, screw in the legs and the nodes, add shelfs and lastly add the rotating mount for your screen. It gives you complete freedom of how the modules will come to life in your space.

Electrolux + UID design students create a hallway shelf that sanitizes your phone and hands

Created as a collaborative effort between Electrolux and the students at Umeå Institute of Design to think about post-Covid-19 home solutions, the Muhō is the ultimate hallway sanitization-station, working to disinfect your hands as well as devices. Located at the very entrance of your house, the Muhō allows you to instantly kill any potential germs that may piggy-back into your house by getting on your hands or your devices. The sanitization-station comes with 3 UV-C light-enabled shelves to place items like your keys, phone, wallet, or sunglasses on. A contact-sensor activates the UV-C light mere seconds after you place your object on it, allowing it to kill any bacteria or viruses by breaking down their DNA. The lowest shelf also has a hands-free sanitizer dispenser built in, allowing you to quickly spritz your hands with sanitizer before you enter the house.

The Muhō envisions a new type of furniture for homes that goes above and beyond to keep your life organized, but keep you safe too. The combination of UV light and hand-sanitizer effectively cover most bases, making sure germs don’t thrive on you or items you frequently touch. To add an extra flair of functionality, the Muhō even comes with a smart-mirror that, apart from showing you how dapper you look, gives you timely updates like time temperature and weather updates… so you know whether you need to carry sunscreen or an umbrella on your way out!

This modular shelf is made from more than 4,000 recycled bamboo chopsticks!

The SMĪLE Shelf may officially be an acronym for Sustainable Module for your Inspired Living Environment, but I’d like to believe it’s called SMĪLE because it literally puts smiles on peoples’ faces with its minimalist design and unique back-story. This modular shelf, designed for practically any interior aesthetic, any room, and for any scenario, comes made from recycled bamboo chopsticks. Apparently, 50 billion reusable chopsticks are disposed of in USA and Europe each year, and while they’re mostly biodegradable, they decompose to release nearly 70 million kilograms of CO2 in the atmosphere… so the guys at ChopValue decided to do something about it. The SMĪLE, which is a part of the ChopValue catalog, uses a raw material that there’s an abundance of – used chopsticks. hese chopsticks undergo a heat, steam, and pressure processes to create a new engineered material, thus giving them a new lease of life that’s much longer than what they were originally intended for.

The SMĪLE shelf is a modular system that relies on recycled steel frames that fix to a wall, holding shelves in between. The steel frames can be arranged practically in any orientation and arrangement, giving you the freedom to create your own shelving design that can even be expanded if you want to, in the future! Depending on the size of the shelf you buy, it comes with the recycled steel frames and ChopValue’s signature chopstick shelves. Each shelf uses hundreds of bamboo chopsticks, compressed together to create a unique looking material with its own bespoke grain-pattern. Most disposable chopsticks are manufactured using bamboo (because of how fast it grows), and travel nearly 8,000 – 10,000 kilometers from China to other parts of the world, only to be used for 30 minutes before being thrown into the trash. Instead of letting them enter a landfill, ChopValue harvests them and turns them into this new material that can be used again. To avoid any further process of energy or waste streams, the collected chopsticks undergo non-chemical and water-free cleaning through a shaker table — whatever does not belong in there is removed by hand manually. Then they are pressed into tiles and coated with non-toxic water-based acrylic resin in a unique process that was developed by the founder of ChopValue, Felix Böck. The new material is sturdy and dense enough to be machined, and they’re then cut into shelves, with notches carved into each of them.

Together, a Small, Medium, and Large unit of the SMĪLE contains precisely 4,276 recycled chopsticks, and hold roughly 6.5 kilograms of CO2 in them, which would otherwise be emitted if the chopsticks had been dumped into the trash. With a renewed lease of life, SMĪLE’s shelves are designed to last for decades, and can be easily assembled out of the box. They don’t really come with a user manual, because the idea is to build a shelf that’s uniquely suited to your needs. Shelves can easily be expanded as you go, simply by adding more frames, and dynamically rearranged by lifting the planks off one level and placing them on another. The SMĪLE shelves come in three colors and in three sizes, and an infinite variety of arrangements to help you organize the clutter in your house… and reduce the clutter entering our environment!

SMĪLE: The Modular Shelf Made Entirely Of Chopsticks

The SMĪLE is a sustainable shelving unit made of 4276 recycled chopsticks for individuals who love high-end minimalist and eco-friendly design.

By ensuring sustainable design practices and relying on a circular economy, each SMĪLE shelf is carbon negative — gathering the raw materials and building your shelf stores more CO2 from the environment than it takes to make and deliver it.

Sustainability is an Achievable Goal

There are easy, practical ways in which you can make a difference. In your environment. In your city. In your home. Even with something as small as a chopstick.

By recycling 4,276 chopsticks into the SMĪLE shelf, we are storing around 6.5 kg of CO2 that otherwise would’ve been released into the atmosphere. That’s the equivalent of charging your phone every day for nearly 3 years.

By reutilizing this chopstick waste, we increase the sustainable management of forests and the environment, as we prove that we do not need to cut down trees or use plastics for furniture.

Timeless Design

SMĪLE saves space through the clean minimalist lines of its modular design. No matter the interior, SMĪLE is the right frame to highlight the things you love.

Enjoy the flexibility and freedom to build your own unique SMĪLE shelving system. Add the lightness and the fine blend of its history-infused iconic modern design to your home or office.

Colors – SMĪLE comes in 3 color palettes that highlight their beautiful surface properties. Shelves are coated in a vegetable-based and environmentally-friendly oil to enhance these unique wooden patterns. Mix and match them to create a unique look for your place.

Modular Solution

Each base SMĪLE is made up of 2 components: the recycled steel frames, and the recycled chopstick boards.

Hang anywhere from 1 to 5 shelves on your frames, combine colors and sizes, and mix and match different units to create a timeless design that fits your home or office space. Unlock your creativity and let modularity inspire you.

Made to Last – By heat-pressing thousands of chopsticks together, SMĪLE becomes a high-density and extremely durable shelf that can withstand the weight of books, photos and more. Each SMĪLE can hold a maximum of 22-30 lbs (10-14 kg) depending on shelf size, or 4 times its own weight in chopsticks.

Sizes – SMĪLE comes in 3 sizes to suit any interior. Simply select from the S, M or L sizes and combine them to build the shelf your space deserves.

This modern furniture holds a full-length mirror and hides a storage shelf!

Small space-friendly furniture has become my most pinned-to board on Pinterest. Maybe it is all that time I am spending at home that is making me turn into a furniture enthusiast and I love when a piece is multifunctional while occupying minimal space – that is the peak of furniture design for me. Orte is an addition to that list, it is an open shelf that combined with a full-length mirror in a vibrant pill form.

In urban homes, one often has to compromise on the kind of furniture they would like because there isn’t enough space to have a separate piece for each function – in this case, Orte saves the space you would need for a full shelf and a mirror by blending them into one. Its limestone base supports a rotating wooden frame with the mirror on one side and six hidden shelves on the other. The pop of red brightens up the corner where the furniture will be and stretched oblong shape makes it easy to fit in any corner. It can be used as a dresser, a bookshelf, or the stuff you need to grab quickly without it being on display always.

Orte is designed using high-quality limestone from the Bauxite lake near the bay dell’ Orte in Puglia in Italy and is 180 x 40 x 28 inches in dimensions. Limestone and colored wood complement each other and make it stand out. Having lived in Manhattan, I can confirm that it is rare you get a full-length mirror in your home and you can always get a stand-alone one but it will take up a corner that can obviously be used by something that gives you more storage (another city problem) – so Orte hits two birds with one ‘limestone’.

A modular shelving unit that requires no screws!

Each person’s home is individual to them. So, what they require from the furniture within it is also unique, yet we make-do with generic ‘off-the-shelf’ units and work around their flaws. But what if this was reversed? What if the shelving changed to suit our everchanging needs? Well, that’s exactly what Kurio was designed to do, as it offers a beautifully simple, modular shelving solution!

Targeted for use by individuals in modern and sophisticated dwellings, Kurio is a decorative piece of wall-art that caters to the individual’s needs; the thin aluminum panels interconnect when placed within the vertical and horizontal slots. What makes this so appealing and clean is the absence of screws and fixtures, allowing for the configuration to be adjusted on the fly!

Not only does Kurio carry an element of functionally, but it also acts as a striking piece of wall-art that introduces a pop of color into the room!

The Kurio is a winner of the A’ Design Award for the year 2019.

Designer: Markus Hofko of Von Morgen

“The basic idea is inspired by the Cabinets Of Curiosities (hence the name Kurio) of the late renaissance. These wooden cabinets were shelfing systems with various boxes of different sizes, to hold objects of wonder from all around the world and juxtapose them in intriguing arrangements. These and similar concepts of showcases of the 70s and 80s were fixed in their design. Kurio in comparison is a modular system and can be changed and re-arranged with ease,” said Markus Hofko.

Ditch the power tools. This shelf locks onto the wall with a single push.

Imagine not needing a manual. Not needing hardware. Not needing power tools. Just your bare hands, two seconds, and a simple push. The SHELF was designed around that very idea of autonomy, easy installation, and minimal knowledge of carpentry. Featuring an innovative mechanism (that I’m still trying to figure out) that locks onto drywalls without any machinery, prior drilling, or even leveling.

The SHELF is furniture installation made incredibly easy. With two wooden sleeves that slide against one another, The SHELF can be mounted on any drywall just simply by pushing it in. When you push forward, the outer sleeve slides towards the wall, prompting a mechanism in the inner sleeve to deploy incredibly small but powerful hooks that lock into the wall (I suspect they do this diagonally). When locked, they’re so firm that the shelves can take the weight of two cinder blocks (the largest TheShelf can carry as much as 30 lbs) without breaking a sweat. If you ever want to relocate the shelf, just pulling the outer sleeve with moderate force allows the hooks to disengage, and the shelf to detach from the drywall.

The simplicity, and honestly magical user-experience, lends itself to some pretty great benefits. A. You don’t need any expertise (or hired help) to mount The SHELF. Position it exactly where you want, and it embeds itself into the drywall without any drilling, nailing, or permanent damage. The hooks on The SHELF measure a mere millimeter (1/16th inch) in diameter, resulting in holes that are barely even visible. B. The hooks don’t penetrate through the drywall… they just embed themselves inside it, leaving any wires, conduits, or pipes behind your drywall completely untouched. C. The SHELF even comes with its own outlet for a wire, allowing you to route cables for a smart-speaker or an indoor camera through it without drilling holes into it or in the wall.

The magical, levitating, push-to-fasten shelves come in three sizes, perfect for books, frames, trophies, toys, plants, food, or even home electronics. Their ability to carry weight and pass wires give them every bit of versatility, and with a simple push or pull, the shelves can easily be relocated around the house without busting out any power tools… or damaging your drywall!
