Philips LED Bulb Less Than $5 Each, 2-for-1 for Now

I find it incredibly annoying that the light bulbs I pick up from Walmart seem to last all of a week, especially in my bathroom. Every other time I turn on the light, one of the bulbs needs replaced. I wanted to replace them all with LED bulbs just so I wouldn’t have to climb up and change them out every month.

The problem was that I didn’t want to spend $15 to $20 or more on a single bulb. Philips has fixed that with an inexpensive new LED light bulb that makes it so cheap to go LED it would nearly be a crime not to. The Philips LED A19 line is getting a 60W equivalent bulb that drinks only 8.5w of power and lasts a very long time. While its estimated 10,000 hour life isn’t as good as some LED bulbs, it is still a serious bargain.

The bulb is selling for just $4.97, and get this, for the first 90 days, it will come in a two-for-one pack. That means you will get two of those LED bulbs for just $4.97. Sounds like it’s time to stock up. Here’s a link to the Home Depot product page if you want to order a bunch.

Set the Mood from Your Phone with This Color-Changing, Dimmable Smart Bulb

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your light bulbs with LED bulbs, you might want to think about going with a bulb that can do more than just light up. After all, once you buy an LED bulb, it’s likely to last for many many years. The Revogi light bulb is one such smart bulb.

While it looks like ordinary LED bulbs, the Revogi can change to any of 16 million different colors, all from the convenience of your smartphone. The bulbs work using Bluetooth 4.0 low energy mode, and can be controlled using a companion app on either iOS or Android devices. The app can control up to 10 bulbs, and you can save scene presets and set automatic timers as well.

Best of all, we’ve got the Revogi smart bulb on sale in the Technabob Shop for just $34.99(USD) – that’s $15 off the regular retail price.

Philips Hue Expands Line with Hue Lux, Tap Wireless Switch and 3D-Printed Luminaires

Philips today announced that it is adding yet more products to its popular Hue line of wireless-controlled LED lamps. Three new products were introduced, including a less expensive white-only bulb, a wireless switch, and a line of 3D-printed lighting fixtures.

The Hue Lux works just like other Hue LED bulbs, but it only outputs pure white light. This allows you to add more remote-controlled bulbs to your network in rooms that just don’t need mood lighting. Philips hasn’t mentioned what color temperature the bulb will output, but I’m assuming it will be pleasing to the eye based on Philips’ other LED bulb products.

The Lux bulb is also $20 cheaper than the standard Hue bulb, selling for $39.95(USD). A starter kit will also be available with two Hue Lux bulbs and a Hue Bridge for $99.95. The Hue Lux will ship sometime “after Summer 2014.”

The Hue Tap is perfect for those times that you don’t have your smartphone readily available, or if you want family or guests to be able to control the lights. The small switch can be wall mounted, and lets you turn lights on and off, and can store preset scenes from the Hue app as well.

While you can currently approximate similar functionality by purchasing a LivingColors lamp and reprogramming its remote like I’ve done, it’s nice that Philips is finally addressing this need with a dedicated product. Incredibly, the Tap’s switch requires no batteries, it gets all the power it needs from the kinetic energy captured from your finger taps. Hue Tap will also be available later this year for $59.95.

Perhaps the most interesting addition to the line-up are the new 3D-printed luminaires. These dramatic lighting fixtures were created in collaboration with the design teams of WertelOberfell and Strand+Hvass, and they are in a word – stunning. The lamps offer the full wireless control found in Hue bulbs, casting colorful shadows through their complex geometric structures.

Unfortunately, the 3D-printed luminaires are extremely expensive, with the pendants going for €2,999 (~$4113 USD) and the table lamps going for €2,499 (~$3427 USD). Philips will be taking pre-orders for the lamps starting on March 31.

Must Have or Pass? LG Smart Light Bulb

LG Smart Light Bulb

There seems to be no shortage of “smart” gadgets and accessories, with the latest one being LG’s smart light bulb. Called the Smart Lamp, the 10W-LED bulb gives regular bulbs a run for their money. It connects via Bluetooth and WiFi to both Android and iOS devices so the user can tweak illumination without having to fiddle with the switch. It also comes with a light-based alarm clock and a security mode which lights it up to make it seem like someone’s home.

The Smart Lamp can also be programmed to flash whenever you get a phone call or set to pulse with the beat of the songs you’re listening to, if you’re on Android. The smart bulb is available in Korea 35,000 won ($32). No word yet on its release in the US.

This is not a light bulb.

Don’t be deceived by the name, the Luminous Blulb isn’t a lightbulb at all. From the core to the exterior, it’s composed entirely of silicone mixed with an illuminating pigment. All it needs is a little sun exposure to give off a glow. Best of all, it’s squishy to the touch meaning it won’t shatter if you drop it!

DIY Luminous Bulb: (Glow in the) Dark Bulb

Korean DIY site Hobby:Design has a neat idea for a light bulb that doesn’t need electricity or electronics to work. The not so secret ingredient is of course glow in the dark pigment. Leave it exposed to bright light during the day and you get soft lighting at night. You can’t turn it off though.

Hobby:Design made the luminous bulbs by first making a cast using an actual light bulb. Then they mixed silicone with luminous pigment and poured the resulting mixture into the cast to get a bulb-shaped replica that glows in the dark. To complete the simile and make it easier to hang the bulb, they screwed the replicas into bulb sockets.

If you can use Litrospheres with this project you’ll have a semi-permanent light source. Check out the full how-to on Hobby:Design.
